In this episode, Anthony speaks to Tom Bosworth, MBE, race walker and Olympian, who shares his inspiring journey of overcoming setbacks and adversity in his athletic career. Tom opens up about his struggles, including a heartbreaking disqualification at the World Championships in London 2017, where he felt he let down his family, friends, and fans. In today's episode, Tom delves into the mental challenges faced by athletes, the pressure of competition, and the impact of setbacks on personal relationships. Despite the tough times, Tom's resilience shines through as he reflects on his achievements, including breaking world records and winning medals. KEY TAKEAWAYS Tom Bosworth, a race walker, experienced a significant setback at the 2017 World Championships in London when he was disqualified while leading the race due to technical faults in his walking technique. The pressure and expectations from fans, media, and himself led to a mental struggle for Tom, causing him to doubt his abilities and feel like he had let down many people. Following the disappointment, Tom struggled with motivation and turned to partying, feeling like he wasn't good enough and questioning his commitment to the sport. The support and understanding from his partner, Harry, helped Tom refocus and regain his determination, leading to a successful performance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games where he set a British record. Tom's journey highlights the importance of mental resilience, self-belief, and the impact of setbacks on an athlete's mindset and performance. BEST MOMENTS "I was in pretty good shape. But after Rio, I realized I want to go and become world champion, or at least get on the podium, and these sorts of things over the next few years." "I felt like I had to be in first. I had to not let any of these people down. And then, so in race walking, there's obviously the two rules to make sure that you are walking, not running." "I got three red cards, which means you get disqualified. So I'd clear loss of contact with the ground because I was doing these stupid spurring faster than slower, faster than slower." "It was probably one of the few times that I've been recognized outside the sport after that was, 'oh, you got disqualified on the Mall in London.' I was like, yes, thanks very much." HOST BIO Olympic medal-winning boxer, Anthony Ogogo, teetered on the brink of a world title before a career-ending eye injury left him mostly blind in one eye. Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review View/Download Trial Documents Case Details: Attorney Tom Bosworth achieved a historic milestone by becoming the youngest lawyer in Pennsylvania to secure an eight-figure jury verdict as the lead counsel in a medical malpractice case for a living client. The case involved a medical malpractice victim who was awarded a $19.7 million verdict by a Philadelphia jury, due to a failure to diagnose. After years of seeing the same primary care physician, a woman's complaints about back pain and other symptoms were repeatedly dismissed. She sought the help of a neurologist, who discovered a mass on her spine. Unfortunately, the mass had already caused several complications, including incontinence, pain, and difficulty walking. As a result, she was left partially paralyzed and unable to continue working. Guest Bio: Thomas Bosworth At age 33, Tom Bosworth became the youngest lawyer in the history of Pennsylvania to obtain a jury verdict in excess of $10 million for a living client as lead counsel (the total verdict being over $19 million). Three months prior to that, after two weeks as lead counsel at trial, Bosworth secured a $7 million settlement on behalf of a mother whose mentally disabled adult son wrongfully died in a group home. Bosworth also obtained multiple non-monetary terms in this settlement that were only agreed to by the defendant after two weeks of trial. In the past 5 years, Bosworth has been counsel on various additional jury trials and settlements totaling over $80 million. These cases included ones for medical malpractice, product liability, and wrongful death. Recently, Bosworth was designated by the independent attorney group Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in Pennsylvania, a designation reserved for the top 2.5 percent of attorneys in the state who are 40 or younger or practicing 10 years or less. Bosworth attended Temple University Beasley School of Law from where he graduated in 2016 with magna cum laude and Order of the Coif distinction. During law school, Bosworth participated as a member of Temple's nationally ranked Trial Team and as a Research Editor of the Temple Law Review. Following law school, Bosworth was a law clerk to the Honorable Lawrence Stengel in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Acceptance, humility, compassion and an unbreakable resistance all make Tom Bosworth a pretty incredible human and athlete but what this conversation shows is Tom's real true strength, the ability to be vulnerable. The courage he has to be authentically himself on and one off the race course is what sets him apart. This has made him such a key speaker and role model for the LGBTQ community and for people of all ages interested in participating in sport at any level. He proves the stereotype of being ‘soft' or not being capable of being an elite athlete whilst being gay or whilst being an open and sensitive human being does not, and I repeat, does not, make him any less of a formidable and incredibly mentally strong competitor, its his strength. His authenticity to be himself provides his own fuel away from the comparison of masks and ego's. Thank you Tom for inspiring me and all the human or athlete listeners.

From starting off at his local athletics club to becoming an Olympic athlete, Tom Bosworth joins us on the Wellness that Works podcast to talk us through his incredible journey on how he became a race walker. Using it as a form of escapism, Tom’s enjoyment for race walking demonstrates you don’t always have to be good at something when you start out. Through his perseverance, he’s gone on to smash records that changed the trajectory of his life.
Welcome to the second episode of Racing through Life. This is a podcast hosted by OpenRace co-founders Matthew Cianci & Christian Camarata. OpenRace is a real-time virtual running app striving to connect and motivate runners, as well as help event organizers increase revenue, reach a larger audience and provide a more interactive virtual race. We found that not many people are showcasing this great and very connected running community, so OpenRace wants to amplify that exposure and show the lives of different runners and people within the running community both on and off the track. Tom Bosworth was an amazing guest. He holds the world record for the 1 mile race walk and is currently ranked #1 in the UK for the 20km. He's also the first out gay British track and field athlete who placed 6th in the Rio Olympics and can walk faster than the average person runs. We touched on topics ranging from his initial introduction to race walking all the way to the party life inside the Athlete Village at the Olympics in Rio.
This series is all about how sport makes us feel so let's talk to an Olympian and current member of Team GB to assess the impact of Tokyo 2020 uncertainty. Olympic race walker Tom Bosworth goes deep into how the precariousness of the situation is affecting him and his future career. Tom, the Commonwealth Silver Medallist, should be at his peak and challenging for medals in Tokyo. Instead, with brutal honesty, he admits his career is left hanging in the balance. Anne-Marie Batson is alongside host Jonathan Overend for Episode Four, in association with Aldi UK, official supermarket partner of Team GB. They chat about sibling rivalry, psychology of failure and Tom's unofficial role as an ambassador for LGBT athletes, not just in track and field but across all sport. Plus, would Jonathan/RUNNING stay ahead of Tom/WALKING?!
As an athlete in an Olympic year, Tom Bosworth couldn't have hoped for a better start to 2020. The race-walker broke his own British record in the 5-thousand metres at the end of February, and then did the same in the 10-thousand metres at the start of March. It was the perfect preparation for this summer's Games in Tokyo, until coronavirus put plans for that on hold - and threw everything else up in the air. So what's it like to be an Olympian with no Olympics to prepare for? Tom's been talking to us about that; about what he's been doing during lockdown; about where things stand in terms of LGBTQ+ visibility in sport and whether things have changed since he came out; and about his wedding plans as well. We're really grateful to Tom, who was one of the first people to talk to us when we were just finding our feet - and we think you'll like him as much as we do.
