Inclusion has been top of the agenda this week in sport. Rainbow armbands and rainbow jackets have caused a stir after some Premier League players refused to wear them for religious reasons or added their own religious messages on. Rather than get bogged down in the detail about armbands we ask the bigger question - how do you make space for everyone in sports? Jess Fishlock, the two-time Champions League winner who has an MBE for services to football and the LGBTQ+ community, joins us to talk about rainbow armbands and making history with Wales. As Wales most capped player and top goalscorer this week she led the team to qualify for their first ever major tournament. Richard Whitehead, two-time 200m Paralympic champion, then joins in to discuss how to make sport more inclusive for disabled people. His new documentary, Dare to Defy, with Adele Roberts, is out on Amazon Prime now. Plus, what was on Gabby and Mark's Spotify Wrapped? Richard Whitehead is a Paralympic Champion, IPC World Champion and IPC European Champion and has run countless races across the globe. This week he chats to Jenni about his experience on Hunted with fellow member of the RunPod Run Club Iwan Thomas, how smiling when running can change your outlook, how he found running as a double amputee, the first day he wore prosthetics and ran 10 miles and his own run. Richard Whitehead is competing in the T61 200m at the Paralympics in Tokyo. Richard won gold in London in 2012 and Rio 2016 but a hat-trick is going to be a challenge at the age of 45. Richard talks to me from Japan and tells me about the atmosphere and conditions in the training camp. Things have changed as Richard's been reclassified from T42 to T61 ,which is for double leg amputees. Richard feels this is to the detriment of para-athletics. It also means he can't now compete in a 100m as that event, which he won silver in rio, has been removed. Richard has started a foundation to coincide with the Paralympics to help others with disabilities. He also has his own podcast with Team GB footballer Ellen White called Track and Ball with a stellar guest list. Check it out! https://www.trackandball.co.uk/ Support this podcast

What a brilliant guest Ronnie is! Relaxed and honest, the six-times world snooker champion speaks from the heart. His dad was his rock until he was jailed for murder when Ronnie was a teenager and his mum was sent to prison a few years later. Ronnie admits that he lost the plot and went off the tracks. He loved sport growing up - tennis, cricket, football...but it was snooker that grabbed him when his dad bought a table. But these days he doesn't have a practice table at home to stop him being obsessed. There's a fascinating discussion about the mental side of the sport and Ronnie talks about his work with Dr Steve Peters, the sports psychologist and what goes through his mind with every shot. He's become much more relentless and more of a winner because of the time he's invested in the mental side of the game. He's concerned about the future of the snooker with a lack of young people coming through and talks about why he thinks this is and what could be done to change it and spice it up! Ronnie says every sport need characters. And snooker has lost this. Ellen White is an England footballer. Richard Whitehead is a Paralympic gold medal winner. Follow us on @trackandballpod
Her 17 Paralympic medals tell only a small part of the story of Tatyana McFadden. Not many athletes have had such a profound affect on daily life. In America, she's changed the law. Tatyana was born in the Soviet Union with spina bifida and talks about her early life in an orphanage and the hardships she had to live through. She talks about being adopted and building a new life with her parents in the United States. She developed a love of sport and at just 14 she was determined to make the US Paralympic team. It was a whirlwind year and on her first overseas trip she won a bronze medal in Athens in 2004. But the experience was ultimately disappointing. The stadium in Athens was empty and there was little celebration or coverage of Paralympic athletes back home in the USA. So she decided to try to change that! In this podcast series we're hoping to give you a greater insight into performance sport. We're finding there's always a lot to learn. So who are we? Ellen White is an England footballer who has been to 3 World Cups. Richard Whitehead is a Paralympic sprinter who won gold in London and Rio. @trackandballpod

And also the importance of choosing the right people to be around you - in Greg's case, his coach. Andrea Macdonald, founder ideaXme Ltd. interviews Richard Whitehead, MBE, world record breaker and multi gold medallist in the T42 100m and 200m. A multi discipline athlete, Richard is also a world record breaker in the half and full marathon within the category for athletes with a double amputation (marathon record was beaten by Marko Cheseto at the 2019 Boston Marathon). Moreover, recently he is gold and silver medallist in T61 200m events. Please find the full transcript with photo's and links to this interview here shortly https://radioideaxme.com/interviews/ Here, Richard talks of his life growing up with a disability, career as a world class athlete who runs with Össur prosthetic legs and broader objectives to inspire people with his story and promote diversity and equality across society. He also talks of his official removal from the T42 100m event in 2017 after the last Paralympics which took place in Rio, effectively removing his chances of winning another medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Richard Whitehead’s early aspirations: “I was shy and very quiet as a child. All my grandmother wanted for me was that I learn to drive and get a girlfriend” Richard Whitehead, MBE, the “Usain Bolt of the Paralympics”. Richard Whitehead commenting on his success: “They always list the materialistic honours. Whether that’s gold medals at the Paralympics at London 2012 or Rio, world titles or the MBE that I received from Prince Charles in 2012. I think that those things are very nice and a lot of them are great for the family but for me, I’d say I’m not governed by that success. Yes, it gives me a great platform to open up conversations, but I’m successful because I’ve worked hard, been dedicated and disciplined. I’ve had people around me that have given me the guidance and the opportunity to be the best that I ever could be”. Commenting on his change of classification from T42 to T61: “So, it can be quite frustrating as an athlete having to change. I started as a marathon runner and then had to change to 200 meters because I didn’t have a long-distance event. To run in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and get the gold in the 200 meters and the silver in the 100 meters and then to have the event cut is obviously quite frustrating. Not just for myself, but also for the legacy that you leave for other athletes. It’s really important that when you’re competing that you’re not just competing for yourself but for the sustained impact that your event has on the next generation of athletes”. Growing up with a disability: Richard grew up in Nottingham, UK, overcoming challenges of a double through the knee congenital amputation to reach the top of his sport worldwide. Since childhood, Richard has taken part in a broad range of sports. He was a swimming teacher before competing for Team GB as an ice sledge hockey player at the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Turin and then transitioned into running but even then, he did not stick to one event! Amongst Richard's many achievements: He broke the world record at the 2010 Chicago Marathon, completing his run in two hours and 42 seconds. He has completed 40 marathons in 40 days. He won the gold medal in the 200m at the London 2012 Paralympics, defended his title in the 200 T42 and won gold at the Rio Paralympics 2016. Furthermore, he claimed gold at the 2017 IPC World Championships and Silver at the World Para Championships 2019 in Dubai, relinquishing his Gold medal to Ntando Mahlangu, 17-year-old South African who claimed gold. Richard's broader purpose: Richard would like to be known for more than his achievements as an elite athlete. He is very active on the keynote speech circuit inspiring people with his “human story”, is an outspoken “athlete’s voice” who promotes, diversity and equality and works with many charities both as a fund raiser and ambassador. In memory of his friend Simon Mellows and inspired by amputee Terry Fox, Richard ran 40 marathons in 40 days, from completing over 900 miles to raise money for Sarcoma UK and Scope charities. Richard has worked with charities Meningitis Trust and Autism Awareness as well as helping amputees injured as a result of the Syrian Civil War in Jordan with humanitarian group Médecins Sans Frontier (MSF). Richard Whitehead, MBE, is the double Paralympic champion, winning gold in the 200m at both London 2012 and Rio 2016. He also brought home a 100m silver from Rio. He also set the world record in a half marathon and full marathon. Richard is the captain of the British para athletics team and has just won silver at the world champs in Dubai. He's doing amazing things to boost all para sports for the generation after him and is one of the most inspiring individuals I've spoken with. Enjoy listening to the master of mindset himself, Richard Whitehead.
The World Para Athletics Championship has ended in Dubai, We hear from Head Coach Paula Dunn on the success of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team. Athletes from these shores finished third on the medal table with the likes of Hannah Cockroft and Sophie Hahn again on top of the world. There were familar names like Richard Whitehead winning medals along with a new generation of stars getting ready for Tokyo 2020. We discuss the sucess of the para team and how maybe it's time to get beyond the narrative of using words like 'inspirational' and 'super-human' and how we should just be accepting of their incredible athletic endeavours. On track to Tokyo, the British Olympic Association has been threatened by legal action from some of it's own athletes. Big names like Mo Farah, Adam Gemilli, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Laura Muir want more rights around how they can work with personal sponsors. We look at both sides of the debate and highlight how Team GB is not a publicly finded entity, but continues to send teams that are prepared better than anyone to successive editions of the Olympic Games. In other news, we talk about Any Murray and the Davis Cup. We also have news of British medals in para fencing and para badminton as well as more success for table tennis player Liam Pitchford. We look back on the career of British double Olympic gold medal winning cyclist Steven Burke, who announced his retirement this week, and look ahead to the International Swimming League landing in London.Plus, Munich will host the next edition of The European Championships in 2022.It's all on Anything but Footy - your Olympic and Paralympic sport podcast. As economic hardships continue to carve their mark deeper into the lives of Americans, university enrollment is declining. Richard Whitehead discusses the benefits that education has for the rising generation of youth and how Southern Virginia University has been able to battle economic hardships by providing scholarships to 90% of their students. Most universities pack students into classrooms to reduce education costs, however Southern Virginia University is taking a different approach referred to as "the genius of small." The average class size is fifteen students and each professor knows his or her students. When a class member stops attending class they are noticed and others reach out to them. Not only is the quality of education superior in comparison to other universities, but acceptance into postgraduate school is 80%. About the Guest: Richard Whitehead is the acting president & vice president of institutional advancement at Southern Virginia University. Dr. Whitehead joined the Southern Virginia staff in Aug. 2003. A strong believer in education, Dr. Whitehead spent much of his time from 1971 to 2000 associated with Dixie State College where he was co-founder and member of the National Advisory Council, president of the Alumni Association, member of the board of trustees and president of the Foundation. In 1997, he was named the executive director of institutional advancement at Dixie State College. On May 5, 2000, at the college's commencement exercises the Utah State Board of Regents awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree. He served as president of the England Bristol and England Birmingham Missions from July 2000 to July 2003.
