Season 2, Episode 31, Release Date: 5-15-2024 Anti-Racist Psychotherapy with David Archer   Today I had the pleasure of having a compassionate conversation with David Archer, an Anti-racist clinical Social Worker. He is a couples and family therapist, and an advocate for racially oppressed and LGBTQ+ community.   David has written many books, including his newest book, "Transforming Complex Trauma: Reflections on Anti-Racist Psychotherapy."    David has a revolutionary vision, which transforms society in a very positive and healing way. As we heal ourselves, we simultaneous increase the compassion that we are able to give to others, according to David.   David shared how we can view time as circular and malleable. We journey with clients, and help shed light on the past, and work to understand what they would like to manifest for their future.   EMDR is bringing back indigenous knowledge of a mind-body-spirit connection. Also, interconnectedness is a natural way that humans have lived for most of our existence.    We spoke about how capitalism is an inherently insecure system, as it rests of the idea that there is never enough. It is one of the three evils according to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The other two are racism and extreme militarism. When we are committing acts of violance, there is a level of dissociation that is taking place. There are elements within society that encourgae us to shut down and not pay attention. When we start paying attention, compassion grows.   Being alive, and breathing is an expression of love!   Whenever we create an exile, there is some form of dissociation taking place. We are cut off from some of our feelings. When we feel safe, we can tap into the infinite creativity within ourselves. Mental health is helping people have options for who they choose to be.   For David, we need to resist thinking in binaries. He shared how we have to break the ideas of labels, such as mental health. Instead, we can understand how mental health is a fluctuation of states.   I questioned how David stays so positive, and he said, "I am never alone. I always have my ancestors with me."   Experiences can always be pathways to connect to divinity, even difficult experiences. As trauma therapists, we go on this journey with clients, to help them dive into the abyss of trauma.   David shared, "I bring in music, rhythm, religion, because I want to create a therapy that does not look or feel like therapy." Instead of there being a hierarchy of the therapist over the client, the client chooses the method of healing. With this power, the client has a new experience of having choice, and a juxtaposition is created.   We spoke about RAP-- Rhythm and Processing. This a beautiful process that David has written about in his new book, "Tranforming Complex Trauma."

When we reach the point of the season where we refer to weeks by names and not numbers, that's when things are getting good. And with that, it's Wivalwy Week. Carla and Crappy both got to watch a ton of feetball last weekend; Carla was impressed with Washington holding off a late charge by Oregon State in a heavy rainstorm, and Crappy was happy that Luke Fickell won the Wisconsin-Nebraska eligibowl (thank you, Sickos Committee). Cornell had a rough outing in the Empire State Bowl, the Big Red Bears' annual rivalry game against Cornell, losing 29-14 (UPDATE: The school fired 11-year head coach David Archer the day after the loss). Drew Powell, Cornell's starting running back and Crappy's nephew, didn't have a great day on the ground, but racked up a whole bunch yards in the air to wind up his college career. After AJ delivers his G5AD manifesto, Carla and Crappy turn their attention to a mess of rivalry games, some of which you should definitely watch, and some of which — the Iron Bowl, the Egg Bowl, the Heroes Trophy game and the Land Grant Trophy game — you should also definitely watch because things get weird when you're playing for ugly trophies. And then, the games:  No. 11 Oregon State at No. 6 Oregon (8:30 ET Friday, FOX) Oregon State almost managed to beat Washington at home last week, but the Civil War seems like an even heavier lift for the Beavers. And take note, Oregons: Do what Washington State and Washington did this week and extend your rivalry past the demise of the Pac-12. It's the right thing to do. Washington State at No. 5 Washington (4 ET, FOX) Wazzu was legitimately dangerous at the outset of the season, but since then, it's the Huskies that have been playing like they're the team on a mission. And this week, the mission is winning the Apple Cup. No. 4 Florida State at Florida (7 ET, ESPN) This is suddenly is a very different Florida State team without Jordan Travis. Tate Rodemaker is the Noles' new starter, and he's been the backup for the past four seasons. Florida, likewise, will likely start its backup QB after Graham Mertz suffered a collarbone injury. That backup is redshirt freshman Max Brown. And yes, we have no idea. No. 2 Ohio State at No. 3 Michigan (The Biggest Nude, FOX) Crappy's referring to this as the Karma Bowl — and it's coming for you, Jim Harbaugh — but we all know that this year's version of the The Game will be the toughest, and most intense, in years. Carla wishes our Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders a successful completion to their season, and you already know what Crappy's only possible final thought is. Carolyn Fay Booth Archer, 90, of Henrico and formerly Kill Devil Hills, passed away on April 28, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, David Archer; daughter, Denise Beck; parents, Louise and Reese Booth; brothers, Garland and Dennis Booth. She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Jessee (Mike Quinn); Granddaughters, Carrie Beck and Jennie Whitaker (Clay); great grandsons, Christian Beck, Gabriel Beck, and Rylan Whitaker; great-great grandson, River Beck. David Archer, MSW, MFT, is an anti-racist psychotherapist from Montreal, Canada (Tiohtià:ke). He is an Approved EMDR consultant, works full time in private practice, and provides consulting services for organizations and other therapists. In addition to being trained as a clinical social worker, he is also a registered couple and family therapist.His philosophies are informed by mindfulness, intersectional feminism, and critical race theory. He provides mental health services practice using EMDR, Brainspotting, EFT, and other mind-body strategies which utilize memory re-consolidation and working memory taxation methods. Areas of interest relate to working with individuals who have suffered from PTSD, racial trauma, minority stress, addictions, relational conflict, and eating disorders.
