This week on the Nerd we talk to Sal Capaccio: the Beat and Game Day Sideline Reporter at the Buffalo Bills Radio Network and host at WGR 550 Sports Radio, as well as host of the SalSports....and Stuff Podcast.   Our featured charity this week is the American Cancer Society's Real Men Wear Pink campaign. Real Men Wear Pink gives men an opportunity to have a role in the fight against breast cancer. Community leaders around the nation use the power of pink to raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society's breast cancer initiatives, including innovative research, patient services, and education around screenings and risk reduction.   We talk about Sals' involvement with Real Men Wear Pink as well as the American Cancer Society's Coaches vs Cancer initiative. We then go into detail on the recent Buffalo Bills vs Houston Texans match, discuss Jordan Poyer and Jon Feliciano's injuries, and the Daryl Williams - Spencer Brown swap. He gives us his take on the Bill's defense's performance, their chances against the Kansas City Chiefs, and we go into the importance of the Bill's run game. We talk Bills' defense and Tre'Davious White's performance against Brandin Cooks, and Sal gives us his thoughts on how Tre'Davious White will be positioned against Kansas City.   We talk Matt Milano being swapped out for A.J. Klein, the Bill's previous tight end weakness, whether the Bills can stop The Chief's Patrick Mahomes, and our takes on Dawson Knox's and A.J. Epenesa's performance to date. We wrap up with his take on the current state of the AFC - is this the way things will be for the year?   LINKS AND RESOURCES   Featured Charity:   Real Men Wear Pink - American Cancer Society: https://www.cancer.org/involved/fundraise/real-men-wear-pink.html Coaches vs Cancer: https://www.cancer.org/our-partners/coaches-vs-cancer.html   Sal's Fundraiser: https://secure.acsevents.org/site/STR/?fr_id=100921&pg=personal&px=51422146 Venmo: @SalSports Cameo: https://www.cameo.com/salsports   Sal Capaccio Twitter: https://twitter.com/SalSports   WGR 550 Sports Radio: https://www.audacy.com/wgr550#/questions Buffalo Bills Radio Network: https://www.buffalobills.com/audio/radio-network SalSports....and Stuff Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/salsports-and-stuff/id1263713944   The Buffalo Nerd Website: https://www.thebuffalonerd.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thebuffalonerd YouTube: https://youtu.be/qafh6d6vFzA Buffalo Nerd Gives: https://www.thebuffalonerd.com/donations/support/   Use the code “BUFFALONERD” to get a bonus with you sign up with our sponsor BetUS: https://www.betus.com.pa/join/   Support the show: https://www.thebuffalonerd.com/donations/support/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Buffalo Bills kicked off the 2021 preseason with a 16-15 road win over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. There was plenty to like and plenty of areas where the Bills can improve, and on the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D'Amico give you their thoughts on what they liked and what they didn't like after Buffalo's preseason-opening win. Among the players who made a favorable impression on our podcasters: Rookie edge rusher Greg Rousseau, who came up with a first-quarter sack and added three quarterback hurries on 11 pass rush snaps. Linebacker Andre Smith was all over the field, making eight tackles and an acrobatic interception that was negated by a roughing the passer penalty. Running back Devin Singletary, who averaged 5.3 yards per carry in rushing for 42 yards and adding a six-yard touchdown catch. Quarterbacks Davis Webb and Jake Fromm, who combined to complete 19 of 29 passes for 155 yards with one TD and no turnovers. Kicker Tyler Bass, who drilled the game-winning field goal and finished with 10 points (three field goals, one extra point). Safeties Josh Thomas and Damar Hamlin, who are both vying for spots on the 53-man roster behind starters Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. Those whose performances were less than stellar included: Tackle Bobby Hart, who allowed Detroit's pass rushers to constantly get after Webb and Fromm. Cornerbacks Dane Jackson and Siran Neal, who both struggled in pass coverage. Edge rusher Carlos "Boogie" Basham, who was not impactful as a pass rusher and struggled going up against Detroit's second- and third-team offensive linemen. The Buffalo Bills are coming off of their most successful season in 27 years, and they brought back most of their players from last year's squad that went 13-3, won the AFC East and advanced into the AFC Championship for the first time since 1993. Training camp opened Wednesday, and the competition will be intense to make the 53-man roster. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, host John Boccacino discusses which Bills have the most to gain during training camp. Each year, training camp battles afford an opportunity for veterans to claim (or lose) a starting role, and for rookies to lock down a spot on the active roster. Here's five players who Boccacino feels could rise up and take advantage of training camp. His list includes: Cornerback Dane Jackson, who could wrestle away the starting right outside cornerback job from incumbent Levi Wallace. Wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins, a sharp, crisp route runner with great hands who could add another dimension to the aerial attack. Defensive end A.J. Epenesa, who has added back the weight he lost last year and should revert to his quick and effective power rushing days at Iowa.  Guard Ike Boettger, who performed admirably in 2020 and whose consistent and reliable play could push aside Cody Ford at left guard. Safety Jaquan Johnson, whose athleticism, instincts and ball skills could wrap up the primary backup safety role to Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico continue their offseason State of the Bills series of podcasts by breaking down and reviewing the contributions the Bills got from their safeties in 2020. Led by the dynamic duo of Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer, the Bills have one of the best safety tandems in the league. Since they both arrived in Buffalo in 2017, coinciding with Sean McDermott's first year as head coach, Hyde and Poyer have proven to be incredibly trustworthy cogs at the back of the defense, a pair of safeties who excel in Buffalo's zone-heavy scheme and are great at limiting the big passing plays. Hyde and Poyer both also help Leslie Frazier disguise his defense's coverage and both are just as skilled playing up in the box or sitting back and playing centerfield. We assess Hyde and Poyer's strengths and weaknesses: Hyde possesses better coverage ability and thrives as the deep safety in zone coverage while Poyer is the more stout run defender and a terrific tackler. We also explore whether Hyde and Poyer deserve consideration for induction onto Buffalo's Wall of Fame. However, behind Hyde and Poyer, there isn't a lot of proven depth among the safeties and the Bills should/could certainly turn to the draft to replace the departed Dean Marlowe, who was a solid contributor to Buffalo's secondary. We take a look at what Buffalo has in developmental safety prospect Jaquan Johnson, who has primarily served a special teams role so far though he will have a chance to take on the role Marlowe filled during his Buffalo tenure, and Josh Thomas, who will be fighting for a roster spot in training camp. The Buffalo Bills (12-3) close out the regular season hosting the Miami Dolphins (10-5) at Bills Stadium. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico get you ready for Week 17 as the Bills look to wrap up the No. 2 seed for the AFC playoffs. Among the topics covered on the podcast: In a bleak year, the Bills were a rare bright spot that brought fans together to cheer for something good. The Bills have a path to securing the No. 2 seed in the playoffs: by either beating the Dolphins or hoping the Pittsburgh Steelers lose to the Cleveland Browns. After wide receiver Cole Beasley suffered a knee injury in the Week 16 win over the New England Patriots, head coach Sean McDermott faces an interesting decision: does he start key players like Josh Allen, Tre'Davious White, Stefon Diggs, Dion Dawkins, Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Jerry Hughes, Zack Moss, Daryl Williams and others vs. Miami to keep them ready to go for the playoffs, or does he trot out the backups to keep Buffalo's starters healthy? Boccacino and D'Amico size up the AFC playoff field and discuss which teams they want to see come to Western New York on Wild Card weekend, and which team they hope to avoid in the Wild Card round. We then offer up score predictions for the regular season finale as Buffalo looks to match the franchise record for most wins in a season while going for its first 6-0 record in divisional play. For the first time in 25 years, the Buffalo Bills (11-3) are AFC East champions, thanks to a dominant 48-19 victory over the Denver Broncos. On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, hosts John Boccacino and Jamie D’Amico recap the win, Buffalo's seventh in its last eight games, as the Bills secured their third playoff berth in the last four years. Among the topics covered on the podcast: Jamie and John take a stroll down memory lane, sharing where they were when the Bills last were AFC East champions, during the 1995 season. Jamie tests John's knowledge of those 1995 Bills. This was a moment four years in the making, and this victory fulfilled the promise made by general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott when they were hired that they would turn the Bills into perennial Super Bowl contenders, and not just a team thankful to sneak into the playoffs every now and then. This Bills team has legitimate Super Bowl dreams and seems poised to be the main challenger to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC. Recapping the win over the Broncos, quarterback Josh Allen (four total touchdowns, 359 passing yards) continues to make a legitimate case as the league's MVP. Boccacino and D'Amico discuss where Allen falls in the MVP race, and speculate on who has the better offensive weapons around him: Allen or Patrick Mahomes. Wide receiver Stefon Diggs (11 catches for 147 yards) continued his breakout season and is clearly the catalyst behind both Allen's career year and Buffalo's high-powered offense. Linebacker Matt Milano was outstanding and is returning to form as a game-changer for a resurgent Bills defense. Speaking of the defense, this unit is back to playing like a top five unit, and Leslie Frazier now has a plethora of weapons at his disposal along the line, from Jerry Hughes, Ed Oliver and Quinton Jefferson to Vernon Butler, Harrison Phillips and Mario Addison. Kudos to left tackle Dion Dawkins, who shut down Denver's talented edge rusher Bradley Chubb. It was a banner day up and down the offensive line, as Buffalo averaged 7.6 yards per rush while rushing for 182 yards on 24 carries. Speaking of the ground game, rookie Zack Moss (13 carries for 81 yards) has established himself as the bell cow of the backfield. This team's veterans like Hughes, cornerback Tre'Davious White, and safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer have been waiting for this moment since they arrived in Buffalo, but they are not done yet and have their sights set on loftier goals. Among the questions we examine: Can Buffalo contain MVP candidate Russell Wilson and the high-flying Seahawks offense? How will defensive coordinator/assistant head coach Leslie Frazier scheme his defense to deal with Wilson and his quartet of talented pass catchers in DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, Greg Olsen and Will Dissly? Knowing Wilson picks apart zone defenses, and knowing Buffalo predominantly plays zone, how will the Bills adjust their game plan against the dangerous Seahawks offense? What to look for in the anticipated matchup between Metcalf and Buffalo's All Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White. Why safeties Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer will need to step up their coverage game against Lockett and Metcalf. Will Ed Oliver, Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison and the Bills pass rush generate enough pressure to force Wilson into turnovers? The Seahawks are expected to be without their top two running backs (Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde). Can Buffalo, minus Matt Milano, bottle up the ground game? Will Josh Allen and Buffalo’s offense return to the form it showed during a four-game winning streak to start the season? The Seahawks are giving up the most passing yards in the league (nearly 360 per game), which should bode well for Allen and his talented trio of wide receivers in Stefon Diggs, Cole Beasley and John Brown. One week after Devin Singletary and Zack Moss gashed the New England Patriots on the ground, why the Bills shouldn't forget about the ground game, which can serve to keep the potent Seahawks' offense on the sidelines. How worried should Bills fans be about center Mitch Morse, who is out after suffering another concussion? After answering these questions, our podcasters offer up their score predictions for the game.
