Our guest on this episode took the consumer electronics brand, Belkin, from $400 million to one billion dollars in annual revenue in only four years. As the president of Kenmore Craftsman Diehard for Sears Holding he transformed these iconic American brands by launching Kenmore and Diehard exclusively on Amazon with Kenmore becoming the first major appliance to be sold on Amazon. He is the former president of the Disney Stores Worldwide…and so much more! As someone who has seen just a few economic cycles while running major brands, I could not think of a better guide for us all than my friend, Tom Park, who offers specific and sage advice, especially for middle and lower middle market companies, as we continue to move towards increasingly uncertain times.  We also talk about consumer product trends, managing expenses, focusing on the customer experience, building infrastructure to get ahead of the curve, employee retention, creating a culture of accountability to achieve budget, the importance of market share analysis, leading well and so much more. He also currently serves on the Board of Directors for Howard's, a large independent appliance and consumer electronics retailer Prior to joining Portage Point, Tom was CEO of Incipio, a consumer products company, until he left in 2019. Tom served as President of the Kenmore Craftsman Diehard for Sears Holdings. Tom was hired in 2015 to transform these iconic American brands to maximize their value by externalizing the brands after nearly 100 years of being exclusively sold at Sears. Under Tom's leadership, the Kenmore and Diehard brands were launched exclusively on Amazon. Kenmore is the first major appliance brand to be sold on Amazon and included delivery and installation services performed by Sears. Tom was instrumental in negotiating the sale of The Craftsman Brand in 2017 to Stanley Black & Decker for $900m Prior to joining Sears, Tom held several executive positions at Belkin International, a global leader in mobile accessories, wireless networking products and IOT smart products. Positions within Belkin included President Linksys Networking Division, President of the Americas, Chief Operating Officer and CFO. During his tenure of a dozen years, Belkin saw significant growth, more than doubling the business to $1B. Prior to Belkin, Tom spent a decade with the Walt Disney Company where he was President of the Disney Stores Worldwide. In addition, he held executive positions with Disney Consumer Products. Tom was Controller for the $3B consumer products business and Controller for Walt Disney Imagineering, the design and development group for Disney theme parks Tom graduated from Villanova University with a BS in Accounting in 1979 and began his career with Unisys holding several positions in finance and accounting for over 12 years. Tom serves on several advisory boards, including the Villanova School of Business. Alan Sparks is a senior executive with Harris Technology, a publicly listed company on the Australian Securities Exchange and is an online retailer of technology products and solutions aimed specifically at SMEs. He has also worked with tech companies like Cybernetic Generator & Behavior Corp., Renewable Power Australia Ltd., BlueAnt Wireless Pty Ltd., Buddy Technologies Limited, Cellnet Group Limited, Belkin International, Philips, etc. He was part of the key management team that led Philips Mobile Phone to profitability within nine months after they posted losses of $2 billion. He has built an extensive portfolio of Chair, Board Member, and advisory positions for various ASX-listed and private companies. In this episode, Alan talks to us about his journey from Johannesburg to Australia, the different roles he played in various companies, and the business culture in different countries. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Harris Technology is growing at the rate of 200% per annum. Harris Technology has its e-commerce site, which is about 20% of its sales, but the rest of it all comes through websites like Amazon, eBay, etc. Alan has also been a board member of a company called Renewable Power Australia Ltd. It is a power plant generating electricity off the back of a sugar mill in Coomera. He represents a group of investors in Singapore for a company called Gazelle Capital. Allan is also a board member of Pacificomm Group Ltd. It is a trans-Tasman tech distributor operating its biggest businesses in New Zealand and Pacific Islands, dealing with the retailers such as Harvey Norman, Noel Leeming, etc. He also runs his own online company selling products such as a garage door opener connected to your mobile, where you can see or control your garage door from anywhere in the world. He has been running the business for five years. He was born in Johannesburg and grew up there. He graduated in accounting and is a qualified chartered accountant. After graduation, he worked for some time in the finance industry and then picked the computer industry. He left South Africa in 1999 and has worked in countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Australia. Alan says you earn the right to live in Hong Kong. The business language is pretty universal, but it's the nuances that count. And the nuances in China are much more pronounced than they are in the UK and USA. Chinese don't necessarily rely on the contract per se. They rely much more importantly on the relationship. Americans are all about driving the business deal and less about the relationship, whereas the Chinese are much more about the relationship and whether they can trust you or not. The artificial intelligence arena will burgeon in the next couple of years and start to show some real benefit to a greater variety of businesses. Today’s guest, Shwetak Patel describes a collection of research projects that leverage mobile phone technology in new ways to enable the screening, self-management and studying of diseases. By using mobile phones as healthcare devices, we can enable access and scale, helping advance health and clinical science through the convergence of sensing, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. Today’s episode was originally recorded at AI For Good, an annual global summit hosted by ITU and XPRIZE, and while some elements of the conversation are more timely to COVID’s spread in July 2020 at the time of recording, all of the technology is still relevant today. Shwetak Naran Patel is an American computer scientist and entrepreneur best known for his work on developing novel sensing solutions and ubiquitous computing. He is the Washington Research Foundation Entrepreneurship Endowed Professor at the University of Washington in Computer Science & Engineering and Electrical Engineering, where he joined in 2008. His technology start-up company on energy sensing, Zensi, was acquired by Belkin International, Inc. in 2010. He was named a 2011 MacArthur Fellow. He was named the recipient of the 2018 ACM Prize in Computing for contributions to creative and practical sensing systems for sustainability and health. Chet Pipkin was the kind of kid who loved to take things apart and put them back together. As a young man in the early 1980s, he started hanging out in mom-and-pop computer shops, where he realized he could meet a growing need by selling the cables that connect computers to printers. That simple idea became the main ingredient in Chet's secret sauce: instead of making his own computers, he would make the accessories needed to make them work. Belkin International eventually grew into a massive manufacturer of electronic goods — last year, it sold to a subsidiary of Foxconn for more than $800 million. PLUS in our postscript "How You Built That," how Clay McCabe decided to rebrand his dad's zipper repair business into Zipper Rescue, a repair kit that helps people fix their broken zippers at home.

“The job of a designer is to be a psychologist…” Industrial design is something that a lot of manufacturers used to outsource. Companies would design a product and then contract with a firm of outside design consultants to slap a good-looking skin on it, and hope for the best. But in the last decade or so, lots of companies have gotten design religion. Design has been brought in-house, where it can shape products from the very get-go. There’s an obvious source for this idea — Apple. This week we talk to Oliver Seil, the Senior Design Director of Belkin International’s Innovation Design Group. Belkin is an accessory company based in Los Angeles that has grown into one of the biggest suppliers of mobile accessories. It’s has a big portfolio of products, from iPhone and iPad cases to battery packs, surge protectors, networking gear and its line of WeMo home automation products. We talk to Seil about Belkin’s products and design process; the surprising complexity of USB cables - and why they cost so much; and of course, why Apple has had such an enormous influence on design and manufacturing.
