Episode Topic: Pioneering the Shakespeare in Prisons MovementListen in to a conversation between prison theatre practitioner and activist Jean Trounstine and Mary Irene Ryan Family Executive Artistic Director of Shakespeare at Notre Dame Scott Jackson. Jean's work at the MCI Framingham Prison for Women in Massachusetts during the 1980's and 90's represents perhaps the very first productions of Shakespeare staged by incarcerated women in the modern era. Her program became the focus of her first book, Shakespeare Behind Bars, an in-depth journey into both her experience as facilitator/director of the program and that of the core ensemble of women who explored the works of Shakespeare in the most nontraditional of environments. Jean's work was to become the early inspiration for the larger Shakespeare in Prisons movement, a global cohort of practitioners that today encompasses programs in more than 30 U.S. states and 17 nations.Shakespeare at Notre Dame, the founding organization of the Shakespeare in Prisons Network, is proud to feature the work of this inspirational visionary and, further, to serve as the permanent home of her legacy archive. Our partnership will ensure that her seminal work is accessible to future generations of scholars, researchers, and practitioners in perpetuity. Episode Topic: The Church's Vision for WomenThirty years ago, in both Evangelium Vitae and his Letter to Women, Pope John Paul II issued a clear call for the genius of women to be “more fully expressed in the life of society as a whole, as well as in the life of the Church” (Letter to Women 10). Throughout his papacy, in fact, he emphasized women's “prophetic character,” calling on them to be “witnesses” and “sentinels” — guardians of the sacred gift of life and the order of love (Mulieris Dignitatem 29; Homily at Lourdes 2004). “The Church's Vision for Women,” presented by Angela Franks, took place at the McGrath Institute for Church Life conference True Genius: The Mission of Women in Church and Culture at the University of Notre Dame in March 2025, developed by Abigail Favale, Ph.D., Professor of the Practice, Theology & Literature, at the McGrath Institute for Church Life.Featured Speakers:Abigail Favale, professor, University of Notre DameAngela Franks, St. John's Seminary, BostonRead this episode's recap over on the University of Notre Dame's open online learning community platform, ThinkND: https://go.nd.edu/f9588d.This podcast is a part of the ThinkND Series titled True Genius: The Mission of Women in Church and Culture. The Magnificat Choir proclaims the glory of God through prayerful song and strives to draw people closer to Christ with its ministry. The choir celebrates and builds upon the rich musical traditions of the Church, uplifts women's voices, and serves the community as the hands and feet of Christ. As a diverse group of singers, the ensemble reflects the Notre Dame family by fostering a spirit of community that creates lifelong friendships. As Christmas is celebrated the world over, Notre Dame's Magnificat Choir humbly offers you the gift of voices lifted high in praise from their newest album released in November 2024 entitled Magnificat (Signum Records). Listen in to these special hymns highlighting the prayers, words, and music of women, as well as composers from the University of Notre Dame. With this album, we seek to magnify the light of Christ through prayer, meditation, and song. As Mary's “yes” brought light into the world, we pray she may serve as our example. The album begins with Kartika Putri's simple yet apt “Chorister's Prayer,” which the choir prays to begin every rehearsal as we strive to make real the words that we sing. Next is a Bernadette Farrel's, “O God, You Search Me,” reminding us that before we even speak our prayers, God knows our thoughts and discerns our purpose. In Kola Owolabi's “Prayer of St. Francis,” we once again pray to put our beliefs into action, and to make God's light visible in the world. Thanks for listening!
