The Young Gaffers | An irreverent look at The Beautiful Game
Wherein Our Heroes delve into the mailbag and produce a glorious rant of epic proportions from Brendan. Benito Floro and Canada Soccer decide to consciously uncouple, we wonder if Canadian players are getting their fair shake in the MLS, and London Stadium sees trouble both on and off the pitch (Payet's Rabona notwithstanding). Also, José Mourinho yet again fails to pip Pep. We're technically on holiday, but there's no rest for the wicked when it's a busy week of football for both the Whitecaps and Canada. The 'Caps have won two games in a row on the road, qualified for the knockout stages of the CONCACAF Champions League, and Erik Hurtado's scored in consecutive games. Whatever crazy voodoo has been done, it's working. Next up is a must-win game away to Cascadian rivals Seattle. Defeat is not an option if Vancouver's faint playoff hopes are to stay alive. The 'Caps have stayed on the road, so head coach Carl Robinson held a conference call today to look at Vancouver's recent games, the task ahead against Seattle and to make the playoffs, and he reveals some exciting preseason plans. Turning our attention to the national team, the Canadian Soccer Association have sacked head coach Benito Floro. No real surprise there, but CSA (and CONCACAF!) President Victor Montagliani held a conference call on Wednesday to explain why and the way forward for Canadian soccer. We bring you the whole call (well the English parts!) and there's some interesting discussion topics in there for sure. There's a lot of talk to be had, so have a listen.
Soccer Talk with Tyler Green and Simon Fudge is back for the September 4th edition - presented by Metrotown Orthopedic & Sports Physiotherapy, as they broadcast from the Barber and Co. studios. On this episode, Tyler and Simon look back at Whitecaps FC’s 1-0 home defeat to the New York Red Bulls on Saturday afternoon. Does this latest setback spell the end of Vancouver’s hopes to make the MLS Cup Playoffs this season? With the postseason looking more unlikely as each game goes by, what changes need to be made by the Blue and White - both on and off the pitch - for 2017? All is discussed in this latest edition. Following a costly defeat in Honduras on Friday, Canada’s hopes of reaching the final-round ‘Hexagonal’ stage of 2018 World Cup qualifying in CONCACAF hang by a thread. Needing to score goals against El Salvador at BC Place on Tuesday night and huge help from Mexico, who host the Hondurans at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City that same evening, can Benito Floro’s side pull off a soccer miracle? Tyler and Simon give their thoughts. And what to make of the Hope Solo suspension? Our women's soccer insider, Sandra Prusina from Sportsnet.ca, will give us her thoughts. All that and more on the September 4th version of Soccer Talk! More info about Soccer Talk on Facebook! And visit our friends at Find a Property, Tenth and Proper, and our newest partner - Caffe Mangia - located at 2211, Manitoba Street in Vancouver!
It's a five day feast of football this long weekend, for both club and country. It's also a crucial, must perform one for Vancouver Whitecaps and the Canadian national team. A tough season for the 'Caps still offers some hope of a postseason berth with seven games remaining. It's a tough ask, and after everything that's gone wrong this season, it's a hard one to see coming to fruition. But this is MLS, and nothing is straight forward here. Just what has gone wrong and how can it be rectified? We chat with Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi to ask him just that and a lot more besides, from youth development, to those wanting him and Carl Robinson out, the perceived cheapness, and the future path the club will take. In a special interview heavy episode, we also sit down with new WFC2 player-coach Pa Modou Kah to chat about his transition into coaching, his decision to make that change now, and his clear love for imparting his knowledge with the younger players. And talking of younger players, we speak one of them who has been at the 'Caps for four seasons now, striker Erik Hurtado. It's been a year since he flew out on loan to Norway. What has he learned in that time and did he expect to be back in the first team reckoning when he came back to Vancouver? Turning our attention to the national team, we hear from Canada coach Benito Floro as he gives a conference call ahead of this Friday's massive showdown in Honduras, with a place in the Hex on the line. There's a lot of talk to be had, so have a listen.
If you’ve been following the US national team’s journey to St. Vincent for Friday’s World Cup qualifier, you know the scenery is incredible. You also know it’s hot. Really hot. A sweaty Alejandro Bedoya joins the guys from paradise to preview the match, explain why now was the right time to move to MLS, banter about fantasy football and reinforce his title as one of ETR’s favorite guests. Before you assume we forget about Canada – don’t lie Canucks fans, you were thinking it – ExtraTime Radio’s officially unofficial Canada correspondent Kurt Larson calls in from San Pedro Sula to explain how Benito Floro’s team can manage a result in a stadium that’s basically a house of horrors. Plus, there’s a handful of MLS games on Saturday (MLS LIVE party, anyone?), with the big news coming out of LA, where Nigel de Jong and the Galaxy parted ways after less than a season. In the mailbag, advice on subway etiquette, Alex Muyl for Rookie of the Year and Bradley Wright-Phillips’ legacy with the Red Bulls.
Soccer Talk with Tyler Green and Simon Fudge is back for the March 24th edition - presented by Metrotown Orthopedic & Sports Physiotherapy, as they broadcast from the Barber and Co. studios. We get the thoughts of Fox Sports Mexico's Antonio Valls. Whitecaps FC’s 2-1 win over Seattle had a touch of controversy and Tyler and Simon debate the issues. Finally, with the absences of some key Whitecaps players for the match against Houston, what does Vancouver need to do to get their record back to .500? All that and more on the March 24th version of Soccer Talk! More info about Soccer Talk on Facebook! And visit our friends at Find a Property and at Tenth and Proper.

We chat with newest Canadian recruit Scott Arfield about pledging his international future to #CanadaRed and talk to two veritable old hands now, Toronto FC midfielder Will Johnson and Orlando striker Cyle Larin. There's no Whitecaps players with the senior Canadian team this weekend, but they are losing four starters to international duty and we chat with two of them.Christian Bolaños looks back at Saturday's controversial Cascadian derby in Seattle and looks ahead to Costa Rica's two crunch World Cup qualifiers against Jamaica, while Tim Parker has his eyes firmly set on the qualifying for the Rio Olympics with the US U23 side. Those absences will weaken the Whitecaps considerably for this weekend's MLS match against the Dynamo, and it might mean the first MLS minutes for rookie centre back Cole Seiler. We talk to Cole about that prospect and find out how's he's settling in to Vancouver and what he's been learning about his game. There's a lot of chat to be had, so have a listen! The CANMNT advances past Dominica as the younger players shine and give hope for the future. All eyes would have been on the likes of Cyle Larin and Tesho Akindele, but Samuel Piette, Ashtone Morgan and Jonathan Osorio all had their moments looking good for Canada in their 4-0 win over Dominica. The team advances to the next round of qualifying, but up first is the Gold Cup and what will be a much stiffer test and level of competition as this will be Benito Floro's real test of how far the team has come over the last two years.
