Welcome back to another episode of OneNation, our Canadian soccer podcast show hosted by Andi Petrillo and Jordan Wilson, where this week, we recap Canadian club performances as the 2023 Major League Soccer season kicks off over the weekend. The big headline for Toronto FC? On first glance, maybe it'd be giving up a late (late!) goal to lose 3-2 to D.C. United... but the bigger concern is the status of Lorenzo Insigne, who looked distressed as he exited the match with an apparent injury at the half-hour mark. Will he be okay? This team needs him... Meanwhile, the Vancouver Whitecaps struck first against Real Salt Lake as Vanni Sartini's side enjoyed a strong first half... only to capitulate in the second and concede twice en route to a 2-1 loss. But Vancouver fans will leave this match feeling good about the team's overall look, with fitness and consistency sure to come as the season blooms. Finally, CF Montreal kicked off their 2023 season with a 2-0 loss to Inter Miami, as new head coach Hernan Losada returned to MLS action - and he wasn't the only new face at the club making his debut, as former CPL star Sean Rea got his first few minutes in Montreal bleu. This episode of OneNation was filmed ahead of a major news announcement by Canada Soccer. Check back on Feb. 28 for our reaction to Dr. Nick Bontis' resignation as president of the CSA on OneSoccer Today (7PM ET / 4PM PT). 0:00 - How to scrap in soccer 2:53 - MLS is BACK! 3:55 - Toronto FC reaction 12:59 - Whitecaps FC reaction 21:29 - CF Montreal reaction 28:55 - MLS on AppleTV+

He also explains why Alphonso Davies took the kick, not striker Jonathan David.Darren Dreger takes us through the Canucks' coaching conundrum. We're back with another packed episode of the AFTN Soccer Show for your listening pleasure, with lots of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, MLS Next Pro, Canadian Premier League, and Canadian national team chat, after a very busy couple of days of football across the country. We kick off by talking Whitecaps and delve into their first home loss of the MLS season in a 3-2 defeat by Portland Timbers. Poor defending and the inability to convert their numerous chances cost them dear, but what positives can they take away from the match heading into a tough three games on the road and should they look at new tactics, new players, or both? Turning our attention to MLS Next Pro, we look at how Whitecaps FC 2's home opener went against the Timbers, get some postgame thoughts from head coach Nick Dasovic, and sit down for a chat with attacking midfielder Jay Herdman about signing his first pro deal, his step up from the academy, his first call up into the Canadian U20 set up, and an eventful time for the Herdman household. Keeping it international, we look at the Canadian women's match against Nigeria at BC Place on Friday, chat with Christine Sinclair about her post playing plans and what the launch of League1BC means to women's soccer in the province, and newly minted Hall of Famers Rhian Wilkinson and Martina Franko talk about the urgent need to get women's club teams and leagues in Canada. All of this, plus we round up the opening week's action in the Canadian Premier League and look at how the weekend's action went in the MLS West. Ch.1: The New Reality is exploring the importance of thoughtful and accurate education about and with Indigenous peoples, and the role it plays in change. It's not just about the classroom but all the work that goes into developing education programming. We introduce you to those fighting to make change and take you inside classrooms where change is happening. Guest: Kamyar Razaviv, The New Reality Ch.2: There has long been a notion that when it comes to low income parents the only way to provide assistance was in the form of goods or heavily guarded funds. That if you were to give them money with no strings attached they would just waste it on unimportant things. New research has shown that those parents are actually more likely to spend it on their kids. Guest: Mari Amorim, Department of Sociology at Washington State University Ch.3: In fewer than five years the province of British Columbia will end direct funding for children with autism, electing instead to move to a hub model for services. Guest: Kaye Banez, President of the Board of Directors for AutismBC Ch.4: Fifth place Whitecaps FC are set to visit ninth place Los Angeles FC at the Banc of California on Tuesday, Nov. 2 in their penultimate game of the 2021 MLS regular season. A 'Caps victory on Tuesday would see the club clinch a spot in Audi MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017. Over their last 11 road games, the 'Caps have proven to be one of the most difficult teams to beat away from home, picking up points in 10 of those matches. Guest: Vanni Sartini, Acting head coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps Ch.5: If you have a pet you probably think of them as family and they think of you the same way. We know how anxious pets can be when we leave them but it turns out people can feel the same levels of anxiety when away from their furry friends. A researcher has found just how anxious students get when separated from their pets. She talks about her findings. Guest: Alexa Carr, Researcher in Human Development at Washington State University Ch.6: We've all heard the stories. Poisoned candy, razor blades inside a chocolate bar etc. But how often, if ever does this happen? With Halloween in just a few days we wanted to find out. A professor shed some light on just how much checking is really needed for your kids candy. Guest: Joel Best, Leading authority on poisoned candy and Sociology and Criminal Justice Professor at Delaware University Ch.7: With multiple kittens stolen from their farm over the last couple weeks, Aldor Acres has had to make the difficult decision to stop letting people around the animals unsupervised. Back for another great week of shows after an eventful weekend. The Welcome Matt focuses on the tragic stories of the passing of three Delta Hockey Academy players who died in a car accident, and of former NHL player Jimmy Hayes who was found dead in his home on Monday. Richard Zussman from Global tells us what the restrictions are for those that are unvaccinated in British Columbia going to sports events and playing in recreational sports. NHL insider John Shannon follows Hashtags - the best and worst of Twitter, and tells us if he’s heard anything new on the Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes contract front, why he thinks that the Jack Eichel trade situation will continue on, and why he thinks that Kirill Kaprizov is bluffing that he’ll play in the KHL if he can’t get a deal done with the Wild. Price is Right looks at the lack of superstars the Vancouver Whitecaps have had over the years, and how Ryan Gauld has the ability to be a star that supporters can latch on too. Whitecaps FC radio colour analyst Colin Miller and tells us how the ‘Caps have been able to turn things down, how Ryan Gauld has brought a new excitement to ‘Caps fans, and the importance of winning in front of your home crowd. That was the sound at B.C. Place last April, during a walkout by members of a Vancouver Whitecaps supporter group. They did that to protest the club's response to abuse allegations against a former women's soccer coach. In May, the Whitecaps commissioned an independent review of the allegations, and the Whitecaps' respectful workplace policies and procedures. Today, that report has been published. It found the soccer club did not attempt to “cover up” allegations of harassment by a former coach in the women's program - but said it had failed in its communication with players about the incident. The report was commissioned following explosive allegations that dated back to 2008, which were published on a blog in February by Ciara McCormack, a former Whitecaps women's team and Canada women's under-20 (U20) national team player. It spoke with more than 350 people, and has produced 34 recommendations. Guest: Ciara McCormack Former Whitecaps player whose blog post alleged abuse
