Black cowboys have been a major part of Black global history and yet have been sidelined in history. Recently, there has been a resurgence and realisiation that African-Americans were some of the first, highly skilled, trailblazing, and most famous cowboys who were and are instrumental in developing cowboy culture in the United States. Even more, Black cowboys are not historical relics of the past and still are a major part of contemporary African-American communities who continue to redefine and innovate cowboy culture. In this episode we discuss the five most notable Black cowboys and cowgirls in history. These individuals were Nat Love, Bill Pickett, Bose Ikard, Bass Reeves, and Johanna July. This week we are joined by star of stage and Edi Gathegi who you may recognize from films such as X-Men: First Class, the Twilight saga and NBC's The Blacklist and spin-off The Blacklist: Redemption. He most recently starred alongside an A-list ensemble in Netflix's action-packed western The Harder They Fall, opposite Jonathan Majors, Regina King and Idris Elba, as real-life outlaw Bill Pickett. Edi shares that while the film is certainly entertaining, it's also educating and bringing to light the amount of Black erasure in westerns since the Golden Age of Hollywood, and how actors like Don Cheadle films like Boyz n The Hood made him feel represented and seen while growing up. The Harder They Fall is available to stream on Netflix.
Jacque and Joy Ann chop it up with actor Edi Gathegi who plays the legendary rodeo cowboy Bill Pickett in The Harder They Fall. Pull up on your favorite play cousins for another great conversation.

He invented the technique of bulldogging a steer by biting it's lip. He got the idea by watching bulldogs bite the lips of steers. He traveled the world with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show and amazed thousands. Will Rogers said, "Bill Pickett never had an enemy, even the steers wouldn’t hurt old Bill." DAN ARDEN is a veteran non-fiction television producer with a reputation of being a very nice guy to work for – some say too nice. But for Dan, creating a positive and enriching experience for his production team is equally rewarding, sometimes even more so, than producing the show itself. (43:37) EPISODE NOTES: I’ve known and worked with a lot of nice and conscientious TV producers over the years, but DAN ARDEN is hands down the nicest and most conscientious. It’s just who Dan is, and reflective of the way he leads his life. For nearly 40 years, Dan has belonged to Soka Gakkai International-USA, a Buddhist peace organization whose members are guided by the core principles of respecting the dignity of human life and the interconnect-edness of self and the environment. And whether he’s producing a series or special for Discovery, Animal Planet, Nat Geo, HBO, NBC, AMC, Showtime, Fox or PBS, Dan strives to create a positive and enriching experience for the people on his production team: “There’s the material, and the stories, and the outcome of the show you’re working on, and that’s really important. But equally, whether it’s for six months, one season or if you’re lucky enough to work on a show for years, it’s almost like having this other family. And I think when you’re producing, you’re able to create that environment where friends are working together and where you learn from each other. That becomes equally rewarding, and sometimes even more so when you look back on a project, than the show itself.” Many thanks to the composers of the music featured in this episode royalty free through Creative Commons licensing: 1. I was inspired to start this show after losing my mom in August 2016. My mom lived in her home in San Diego until she was 80. It made me worry at times because she didn’t have any family there and I was a 90-minute flight or 8-hour drive away in San Francisco. A big reason she was able to stay in her home so long was because she had a network of friends and neighbors who would help her out. Today you’ll hear my conversation with two of those neighbors, who lived across the street from my mom for nearly 40 years and were part of her support structure. Bill and Nancy Pickett are in their 80s and going strong. Bill is a semi-retired engineer who still works 3 days a week. Nancy recently oversaw a kitchen remodel and celebrated her 80th birthday at a San Diego brewery.

Horizon Line is hosted by Ella Morton and Dylan Thuras and produced by Grant Irving. Music by Nolan Schneider.
