"I want to write something new," American author F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in a letter to his editor, "something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." Months later, he presented the results: the novel that would eventually be titled The Great Gatsby. Published in 1925 to middling success, the book has since become a candidate for the Great American Novel, selling more than copies in a month than the book sold during Fitzgerald's entire lifetime. In this episode, Jacke talks to Fitzgerald scholar James West about his work editing the Cambridge Centennial Edition of The Great Gatsby, which celebrates 100 years of this enduring tale of illicit desire, grand illusions, and lost dreams, delivered in lyric prose by an author writing at the peak of his powers. In his new book Ten Days in Harlem: Fidel Castro and the Making of the 1960s (Faber, 2020), Simon Hall, a Professor of Modern History at the University of Leeds, colorfully details an extraordinary visit by Fidel Castro to New York in the Autumn of 1960 for the opening of the UN General Assembly. Holding court from the iconic Hotel Theresa in Harlem, Castro's riotous stay in New York saw him connect with leaders from within the local African American community, as well as political and cultural luminaries such as Gamal Abdel Nasser, Nikita Khrushchev, Kwame Nkrumah and Allen Ginsberg. Through exploring the local and global impact of these ten days, Hall recovers Castro's visit as a critical turning point in the trajectory of the Cold War and the development of the 'The Sixties.' Mark Mahaney is senior managing director and head of Internet research at Evercore ISI. His colleague James West is senior managing director and partner, and a specialist on the energy sector. In this double-length MoneyShow MoneyMasters Podcast segment, these industry titans weigh in on the state of Big Tech, Big Oil, the energy transition, the key forces driving tech stocks in 2024, and much more. Mark kicks things off by laying out his case for being “Compound Constructive” in the tech sector, even as he says we likely won't see the kind of “once in a decade opportunity” we had there in 2023. He goes on to share his bullish theses on advertising spending, digital advertising effectiveness, cloud computing, and subscription entertainment pricing. He then shares his four top tech sector picks. James takes his turn at the microphone next to discuss trends in the traditional oil and gas industries as well as the clean energy arena. He covers the concepts of “energy poverty” and “energy abundance,” the growing demand for electricity driven in part by tech-linked consumption, and the difference between an energy “revolution” and an energy “evolution” – as well as what impacts those will have on sector companies and investors over the next few years. He then lays out a bullish case for a handful of oil services firms active in the international markets, as well as a trio of software, integrator, and rooftop solar plays in clean energy. Plus, James discusses important topics on the energy transition front, from carbon capture and storage to battery/energy storage to hydrogen and its potential applications in things like steel and cement manufacturing. And he recaps the geopolitical and political forces that could impact energy supply and pricing. Finally, Mark and James provide a preview of what they plan to discuss at the MoneyShow/TradersEXPO Las Vegas, set for Feb. 21-23 at the Paris Las Vegas resort. In this lively and far-reaching text, Nick Witham (University College London) tells the stories of five postwar historians who changed the way ordinary Americans thought about their nation's history. For decades, critics of the discipline have argued that the historical profession is dominated by scholars unable, or perhaps even unwilling, to write for the public. In Popularizing the Past: Historians, Publishers, and Readers in Postwar America (University of Chicago Press, 2023), Witham challenges this interpretation by telling the stories of Richard Hofstadter, Daniel Boorstin, John Hope Franklin, Howard Zinn, and Gerda Lerner - writers who, in the decades after World War II, published widely read books of national history. Witham compellingly argues that we should understand historians' efforts to engage with the reading public as a vital part of their postwar identity and mission. Not just a matter of writing style, popular accessibility was also a product of an author's frame of mind, the editor's skill, and the publisher's marketing acumen, among other factors. Rooted in extensive archival work, Popularizing the Past persuasively demonstrates the cross-influences of popular history writing and American popular culture. James West is a historian of race, media and business in the modern United States and Black diaspora. Author of "Ebony Magazine and Lerone Bennett Jr.: Popular Black History in Postwar America" (Illinois, 2020), "A House for the Struggle: The Black Press and the Built Environment in Chicago" (Illinois, 2022), "Our Kind of Historian: The Work and Activism of Lerone Bennett Jr. (Massachusetts, 2022). Welcome to February 11th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate amazing inventors and snappy patties. James West was born in 1931 in Prince Edward County, Virginia. As a boy, he loved taking things apart and after an accident involving a radio, he discovered a curiosity for electricity. This led West to obtaining a degree in physics and a position with Bell Laboratories as an inventor. By 1968 his inexpensive, highly sensitive compact microphone was in mass production and the technology is still used in 90 percent of today's microphones as well as telephones and tape recorders. James West was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame in 1999 and today holds over 250 patents for his inventions. He is 91 years old and is currently a professor at Johns Hopkins University. On National Inventors' Day we celebrate the men and women who continue to inspire us with their amazing achievements.  The flavor combination of chocolate and mint has been around awhile. As early as 1840, the Quiggins brothers created a soft mint cake dipped in chocolate. And while the UK based Kendal Mint Cake Company still produces them today, the peppermint patties we love to celebrate got their start in America in 1940. At the York Cone factory inventor Henry Kessler had only one rule; the candy had to pass the snap test. If it didn't snap in two the patties were out! It's estimated that over 1.5 billion are produced each year, proving that this candy is still a fan favorite! On National Peppermint Patty Day celebrate the candy that kids still find cool.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day!
