MDJ Script/ Top Stories for June 20th Publish Date: June 20th Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, June 20th and Happy 81st Birthday to Beach Boys member Brian Wilson. ***06.20.24 – BIRTHDAY – BRIAN WILSON*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Will Richardson's Votes Hold if Cobb's Commission Map is Overturned? Marietta School Board Passes Budget with Teacher Raises 'Wild Wild West in Color' Celebrates Juneteenth with Rodeo Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss brown eggs. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: If Cobb's Commission Map is Thrown Out, Do Richardson's Votes Stand? Jerica Richardson's pivotal votes on Cobb County's Board of Commissioners have been contentious due to questions surrounding her eligibility. Richardson's district was redrawn by the Democratic majority using Georgia's home rule powers, a move challenged as unconstitutional by Republicans. This legal uncertainty casts doubt on the validity of her votes and decisions, including approving a transit tax referendum and a housing development. While some legal experts suggest her actions might be protected under the de facto doctrine, which upholds acts performed by officials later found to be improperly elected, the issue remains unresolved. Future court decisions could impact the legality of past votes, potentially leading to significant repercussions for Cobb County's governance. STORY 2: Marietta School Board Passes Budget with Teacher Raises The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a $159 million budget for the 2024-25 school year, featuring significant teacher raises while maintaining a flat millage rate of 17.97. The budget allocates $9 million towards salary increases and benefits for staff, reflecting an average 5.3% raise for all teaching personnel. Additional funding includes $150,000 for Science of Reading learning programs, $722,000 for academic support staff, and $225,000 for insurance, maintenance, and transportation expenses. Board members expressed satisfaction with prioritizing employee compensation amidst rising living costs, emphasizing their commitment to supporting staff and maintaining fiscal responsibility. STORY 3: ‘Wild Wild West in Color' Celebrates Juneteenth with Rodeo In Marietta, Juneteenth celebrations highlighted both the historical emancipation of African-American slaves and the resilience of Black culture. At Jim Miller Park, the Wild Wild West in Color Rodeo and Agriculture Expo drew thousands, featuring Black cowboys, ranchers, and farmers. Attendees enjoyed Western attire, festive food, and locally grown produce while engaging with vendors and learning about modern farming technologies. The event showcased a rodeo with line dancing, horse riding, and reenactments of famous Black cowboys like Nat Love and Stage Coach Mary, emphasizing their contributions despite historical challenges. Organizers aimed to educate attendees, particularly youth, about agriculture and Black history, ensuring Juneteenth's legacy endures through cultural celebration and education. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Smyrna Kroger Celebrates $1 Million Facelift In Smyrna, the Kroger store on South Cobb Drive celebrated a $1 million renovation aimed at enhancing customer experience. The upgrades included new sections like the Kitchen Place kitchenware department and improvements to the bakery, seafood, meat departments, and Murray's Cheese Shop. The store also expanded its Starbucks area to accommodate more customers efficiently. Store leader Kexian Jones noted a significant increase in customer traffic and positive feedback since the renovations began last August. Local residents, like Akshay Mohan and Angia Chen, praised the updated store for its improved selection and amenities. Smyrna Councilwoman Susan Wilkinson highlighted Kroger's investment in the community, emphasizing the store's role as a meeting place and its partnerships with local schools. The event featured speeches, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and opportunities for attendees to explore the renovated store and enjoy free samples from various brands. STORY 5: Marietta School Board Curbs Students' Cell phone Use The Marietta Board of Education unanimously approved a new policy to restrict cellphone, smartwatch, and social media use among middle-grade students at Marietta Sixth Grade Academy and Marietta Middle School. Starting this fall, students will use special pouches to store their devices throughout the school day, with only staff having access to unlock them. The $100,000 initiative aims to enhance focus and reduce distractions, supported by research partnerships to evaluate its effectiveness. Concerns over implementation logistics were addressed, with assurances that disciplinary responsibilities would not burden teachers. The policy garnered broad support from community leaders and parents, emphasizing its potential to improve student concentration and overall well-being. We'll be back in a moment Break: INGLES 6 And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss brown eggs. ***LEAH INTERVIEW*** We'll have closing comments after this. Welcome to episode 54! We have two stories celebrating Black history for the month of February! First off, we have the rough and gruff, gun-toting, cigar smoking, take no shit Mary Fields, often known to history as "Stagecoach Mary!" She was the United States' first Black woman (and 2nd woman) to run a star route for the postal system. A star route mail carrier used a stagecoach on treacherous and rocky rural roads out west and had to defend against wild animals and bandits all the while. Next, KT takes us back 3 more centuries to feudal Japan to learn about Yasuke, the African man who arrived in Japan with a Jesuit missionary and became the close confidant of Oda Nobunaga, the "Great Unifier" of Japan as well as the first non-Asian samurai! *~*~*~*~ Mentioned in the Stories: Stagecoach Mary's Gravesite Statue of Yasuke Map of Feudal Japan *~*~*~*~ The Socials! It's so hard to say goodbye... it's the very last episode of Minority Korner. Nnekay is back to help James close it out, and they both just took a DNA test and it turns out they're 100%: a bunch of things! Nnekay and James reminisce about episodes past and wonder back to yesteryear. Hear about how it all began. Remember our taglines? Our theme song? How much has changed, what's still the same? Hear about what was going on in their lives at different stages and moments. We go through the highlights, the memories, the laughter, the tears of past episodes that made Minority Korner what it is today. Its been quite a Journey from the gay Warriors of Thieves, LGBTQIA+ Homless youth, Why Your Camera is Racist, Texas Rangers, Stagecoach Mary, The Black women mortality rate, Tulsa Okalahoma, speaking Hidden Figures into existence and much more. It's time for the final episode of Minority Korner. Guest Co-Host: Nnekay FitzClarke (she/her) The MK OG, Nnekay Ayana FitzClarke, Esq. In this week's episode, Sandra talks about haunted house stories found on the popular website Reddit. Inspired by two listener stories, these stories range from weird noises to knocking to even a supposed haunted painting. Later, Danielles discusses Mary Fields, also known as Stagecoach Mary and Black Mary. She was the first African-American female star-route mail carrier in the United States. She protected the mail from potential thieves and even scared off a pack of wolves. Known for her proclivity for hard liquor and gunfights, she was a woman ahead of her time. The formerly enslaved Mary Fields (aka "Stagecoach Mary") worked as the groundskeeper at a convent in the Old West before receiving a donated stagecoach. With it, Fields secured a postal service contract to deliver the U.S. mail, unfailingly protecting her route from wildlife and bandits and becoming beloved by locals in Cascade, Montana. There are many legendary figures who emerged from the American Wild West. In this all new episode we explore the life of the lesser known, though no less incredible, Mary Fields, who has come to be known as Stagecoach Mary. Born enslaved, Mary was emancipated around the age of 33 after the American Civil War. Eventually she moved west to the Montana Territory. There she worked alongside the Ursuline nuns and Jesuits at St. Peter's mission until she was dismissed for an incident involving drawn firearms. Mary was a mold breaker and was unafraid to push against the expectations of others. She drank, smoke cigars, carried firearms, and sometimes wore men's clothing. She was also someone of great generosity and won the admiration of many people in Cascade, Montana. She was an unstoppable force, and at the age of 63, became history's first African American Star Route Carrier for the US Postal Service. This was a dangerous job, but despite the threat of predators, bandits, rugged terrain, and harsh winters, Mary and her mule Moses never missed a day in her eight year tenure as a Star Route Carrier. If the whether became impassable for her stagecoach, Mary would deliver the mail by snowshoe, carrying the sacks over her shoulders. Mary became a legend in her own time as stories of this gun carrying, cigar smoking, hard liquor drinking woman who seemed to break down every barrier thrown her way, earned Mary her place in history. Come hear how the life of Mary Fields become the legend of Stagecoach Mary.

Boley Was The Black Town That Couldn't Be Robbed, by Betty DeRamus ON NOVEMBER 23, 1932, three members of “Pretty Boy” Floyd's Depression-era gang made the worst mistake of their lives. They tried to rob the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Boley, Oklahoma, an all-black town of proud-walking pioneers. UP TO that point, the Floyd gang had been robbing an average of a bank a week, usually without any resistance. But Boley's bank was the state's first nationally chartered black-owned bank, and residents had vowed it would never be robbed. As the gang would soon discover, folks in Boley meant what they said.

This week on #StayWoke we discuss a mother who lost all five of her children in a house fire that is now being charged with 5 felony counts of child endangerment. Should this mother be held responsible for the death of her children's or does the state of Illinois have too much dip on their chip? Next we get into the @netflix original film #TheHarderTheyFall. This movie features an all star black cast however the character Stagecoach Mary played by #ZazieBeetz is a darker skin plus sized woman and Zazie is petite and light skin. Of course this leads to the dark skin light skin debate. Let us know in the comments if you feel like Stagecoach Mary should have been played by someone else, if so who? Not sure how but but we end up discussing how our dream man would look lol we called this the Build-A-Nigga segment. On this week's episode of Kickin & Streamin Podcast, Graham & Jocelyn are joined by Geaux Dee & Smash of the Talka Brothas Podcast to review the much anticipated 'The Harder They Fall.' A film by Jeymes Samuel, British writer, director, singer-songwriter, and music produce. The Harder They Fall became one of the most anticipated and talked about upcoming films in 2021 because it would be a Western film featuring all black cast; which included Regina King, Idris Elba, Zazie Beetz, Jonathan Majors, Lakeith Stanfield, among others. The film, although a fictional story, portrayed real-life historical Black Americans who existed in the old American West. Graham, Jocelyn, Geaux Dee, and Smash review the film's overall production from the story arcs, the portrayals, the score, and its visual components as a whole. They also ponder whether The Harder The Fall is a great Western film by itself, or it was perhaps aided by the constellation of stars who appeared in it. The crew also addressed the accusations of colorism levied at the director and the producers of the movie for casting German-American actress Zazie Beetz as the very well known African-American female icon 'Stagecoach Mary.' This week on The Thickening, Danni and Toni discuss The Savage X Fenty Vol 3. Fashion Show, Yung Baby Tate, & Netflix's casting of Mary Fields, better known as Stagecoach Mary, in their upcoming film “The Harder They Fall.” Being “size inclusive” in fashion, body shaming of black female celebrities and public figures, colorism in television and movies, and the overall exclusion of actual plus size bodies in the entertainment world are topics that trigger lots of emotion. In the ever changing landscape of pop culture, plus size bodies are still very underrepresented. While the emergence of performers such as lizzo and actresses such as Wunmi Mosaku are awesome, there is still a lack of true and authentic representation when it comes to mainstream entertainment. It seems as though the powers that be would rather have a smaller actress don a fat suit to play a plus size person, rather than cast an actual plus size person for the role. (I.E. Sarah Paulson portrays Linda Tripp in the FX series "Impeachment: American Crime Story.") What is the reasoning behind this? Do producers and creators believe that casting actual plus size people in roles written for us, would be a form of rewarding “bad behavior?” The “bad behavior” being, existing while fat of course. Stagecoach Mary was a woman on her own in the world, who did most of her hard living after the age of 40. She lived with nuns in the daytime, drank whiskey with men in saloons at night. She was the first black woman to drive a wagon for the US postal service. Tough as she was, she was also known for the verdant lushness of her well-tended gardens. Mary was a woman of dualities, and yet, also limitless complexities. Over time, her legend has outshined the facts of her life. This is the life and legend of Mary Fields, the toughest woman to ever call the west her home. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

The legendary first black female star route mail carrier.
If John Henry has a folk song this woman needs one too! Introducing Stagecoach Mary a.k.a. Mary Fields a.k.a. Black Mary.At 60-years old she was the fastest person - man or woman - in the state of Montana to hitch a team of six horses to a coach. She was the first Black woman to earn a US Postal Service contract. She drove that team of horses for eight years, through rough and wild territories of the West. In the winter, the snow was so deep that she’d leave the horses behind and carry-on with the mail on her back. She never missed a day. Not a single day. She carried a shotgun to demand respect. She once got kicked out of a Catholic convent for using it. When the law banned women from drinking in saloons, she got an exception from the mayor. “I fight through rainstorms...snowstorms ...risk hurricanes and tornadoes. I like to be rough. I like to be rowdy. I also like to be loving ...caring." We are the daughters of hard and soft. ...that edge hitting a soft breeze. We are electric. The storm of posibility. Like the clap of Juneteenth in the middle of global meltdown. Like the swirl and swagger of Mary Fields. "I do bold and exciting things." she confessed. Cheers foremother. Cheers!(She needs her own folk song.)Join the 21 Day Black History Bootcamp at https://bit.ly/blackhistorybootcamp to receive specially curated emails with inspiring words, survival tips, speeches + dedicated songs to listen to for each featured legendary Black woman.Disclaimer: We do not own the rights to the music or speech excerpt played during this broadcast. This one requires a strong language warning but I'm sure Mary Fields would be proud of the foul language. Have a listen to learn about this awesome woman who was the first African American woman to be granted a Star Carrier contract. Plus, we say motherf****r a whole bunch!
I'm gonna tip our hand here a little bit and let you know upfront, this episode doesn't have a twist or another shoe dropping. It's just good old fun all the way through. Stagecoach Mary lived a really dope life on the frontier as basically an anomaly of the old west. She was pretty damn awesome, and with the exception of one douchebag bishop who never even met her, I couldn't find anybody that actively disliked her. Even people she punched in the face loved her.

This week, Sara brings us the story of Stagecoach Mary! Born Mary Fields (and a slave), Mary made a name for herself first by working her way up the Mississippi until she worked for 15 years at a convent. After drawing her gun on a janitor who slapped her across the face, she was fired and made her way west to accept a job as a "Star Carrier" for the USPS. There, she was known to drink heavily, fight off wolves, defeat bandits, & was absolutely beloved by everyone in her town. Short, bite sized and fun, like any good snack its best when shared with friends, so tell your friends about it. Today's Black history Blitz is about the hard-drinking, shotgun carrying wild west legend known as Stagecoach Mary. The first African American Woman to Join the US mail. Mary Fields, later to be known as Stage Coach Mary was born in Hickman County Tennessee at around 1832 Liberated from enslavement at the end of the American Civil war, Fields headed North working on Riverboats till she eventually found permanent work in an Ohio convent. Her gruff style and constant cursing raised eyebrows in the quiet convent, and though she faithfully served the nuns, news of her habitual drinking, smoking, shooting guns and wearing men’s clothing. Caused upheaval. Things came to a head when Fields and the convent’s male janitor drew guns on each other during a heated argument, it was the final straw and she was fired. Fields love of hard drinking and gunfights eventually paid off when in 1895 she won a contract from the postal service to become a Star route carrier making her the first African American woman to do so Cathy Williams, we salute you! This week on Minority Korner, for our first guest cohost filling in for our neighborhood librarian as she’s on maternity leave, we have the very hilarious New York based comedian Glory Mora and we have so much to talk about we dive into Cancel Culture, the right way to apologize for some past social media shit one shouldn’t have said, Glory catches me up on the drama on the Braxton family values, and why do we watch rich people fucking up their lives on TV? I watched Netflix’s Siempre Bruja which should be a win dealing with a witch in colonial slave time Columbia, but it is a misstep, and Glory is right at home as we go into tangent city. In the main events I am giving you the low down on 2 Black folks you probably haven’t heard about and that should become movies asap! One was a bad ass stagecoach driver, and the other an escaped pirate slave- and Glory will finish out the episode giving you the insight about the divine 9- the Black Fraternity and Sorority’s and some prominent members that hail from her very own sorority Zeta Phi Beta- and along the way Glory will be fact checking and letting us know everyone’s star sign! Also I give Glory some advice: don't ever let Baby Face manage your music career.
