Meet Becky Fawcett, the fierce founder of HelpUsAdopt.org and a decades long friend!
We are just switching our name from Safe Home Podcast to Unraveling Adoption, and this is the first full episode under our new name. In this week's episode, Beth Syverson chats with Leslie Pate Mackinnon, a licensed clinical social worker and an adoption activist for the past 30 years. Leslie is a seasoned and well-respected therapist in the adoption community. She is a nationally known trainer who travels across the country training therapists, agencies and child welfare workers about the psychological issues inherent in adoption and third-party reproduction. Following four decades of successful practice in Atlanta, Leslie and her husband relocated to Asheville, NC. Leslie comes to this work by way of being a birthmother in the 1960s, the Baby Scoop Era. She understands adoption trauma deeply, both as a lived experience and as a therapist for all members in the adoption constellation - adoptees, birthparents, and adoptive parents. On Safe Home Podcast, we've had 8 episodes so far with adoptees, and 1 episode with another adoptive parent, but this is our first episode from the birth mom's perspective, which is a super-critical piece of this puzzle. ===============
In this very special episode, Beth Syverson, host of Safe Home Podcast, explains her pivot to Unraveling Adoption. This is the last episode of Safe Home, and the first episode of Unraveling Adoption. She explains what the new title means, what the future plans are, and she provides ways for everyone to help get the new podcast launched. ===============
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Abby Hasberry, Ph.D. to The Honestly Adoption Podcast. She is an Executive Educational Leadership Coach & Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist Associate. In addition, she is also an adult adoptee and birth parent. A Little More About Abby (in her own words)... "If I had only three words to summarize my life's focus, they would be: leadership, service, and education. I'm a passionate executive coach who is also an experienced school administrator, educator, researcher, and college instructor with expertise in school start-ups, diversity and equity, racial identity development, transracial adoption, and leadership development. In addition, I am a marriage and family therapist. My primary therapy specialties are adoption with focus on transracial adoptees, adolescents and young adults, racial identity development and racial trauma, and relationships. As a trained teacher, I approach each client and their family system through a developmental lens. I consider not only your lived experiences, but also the developmental stage at which you experienced them and how the combination of the two may have affected you. I have been trained in Brainspotting and narrative therapy and believe that the client is the expert in his/her own life. I consider myself diversity focused, trauma-aware, and internal family systems (IFS) informed. I am also experienced in education management, P-16 education (including professional development and instructional leadership), team building and individual career development, online education, African American studies, curriculum development and implementation, and early childhood education. My deepest satisfaction has come from developing people. My two ultimate dream jobs would be one in which I am working to reform education while developing talent hands-on, and one in which I am supporting transracial adoptive families." “No one does an adoption because their life is easy.” We rarely have the opportunity to learn about adoption from the perspective of a birth mother. This is why it is an honor to have my friend, Anna Jane, bringing her truth and shining her light in this episode (TW). Anna shares it all. How she came to make her choice, the aftermath, and what life is like for her now. With those moments, come all of the feelings including the intensity of grief that continues to resurface at unexpected times. No matter how much support is available, riding these emotional waves as a birth mother is something to be experienced, not necessarily prepared for. Though every situation is unique, Anna hopes that her vulnerability in speaking up can serve to support others in times of challenge. Adoption is a choice for a lifetime, it takes tremendous strength, and it is also wonderful and beautiful. Most of all, it is our hope that every birth mother understands, “you are not alone.” If you'd like to connect with this beautiful soul, start with me!
