We get the behind the scenes story on how the first season was funded by KevOnStage and his wife Melissa, leading to them handling everything from wardrobe to continuity. For the second season, they got a full production budget and crew, allowing them to expand the show's scope and make it funnier and more authentic, with new storylines for every character. Kev and Mark highlight how the show is a workplace comedy for all audiences, even non-churchgoers, with humor that's universally relatable while still containing inside jokes for "church kids" like themselves. This episode is definitely loaded with many crazy stories and also industry insights. Mark JP Hood recalls his first time fully activating his talents when he tap-danced to Kirk Franklin in his church on a dry-erase board. KevOnStage shares the show's humble beginnings on the KevOnStage Studios app (Shout out to the GOAT), and how a mutual friend led to a bidding war for the series, with BET having the winning offer. They explain that the fame and attention can be jarring, but his slow, organic rise helped him adapt. Kev also talks about his intentionality in hiring Black women, a lesson he learned from a pivotal job interview early in his career. Lastly, listen and watch to find out who Kev and Mark's dream cameos would be for the next season of Churcy. This is truly an episode that you don't want to miss. Featured : MIMI ZIEMAN, Tap Dancing on EverestWe humans are a risky bunch. It seems part of our make-up, or at least the make up of one small expedition of four climbers. Their mission: attempt a new route on the East Face of Mt. Everest, considered the most remote and dangerous side of the mountain, summitted only once before. That's not all, though. They would climb without using supplemental oxygen, porter support, or chance for rescue. And going with them: Mimi Zieman, a woman still in her third year of medical school, as team doctor. And we have to ask… why? According to Zieman, she felt called—something she couldn't resist drawing her on. In ways not so dissimilar to WHALE FALL by last year's guest Daniel Kraus, Tap Dancing on Everest offers up a coming of age story about finding your own authentic self. As Zieman goes solo hiking through Nepal, she weaves her childhood as the daughter of Jewish immigrants raised in 1970's New York City, with adventure, medicine, and empowerment. Join us for a chance to ask Zieman about the how and the why, about what drives a person to extremes and what we can make out of such experiences.Episode was recorded live May 22, 2025.Email: peculiar@bschillace.comWebsite: https://brandyschillace.com/peculiar/Newsletter: http://eepurl.com/ixJJ2YPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/PeculiarBookClub/membershipYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@PeculiarBookClub/streamsBluesky: @peculiarbookclub.bsky.socialFacebook: facebook.com/groups/peculiarbooksclubInstagram: @thepeculiarbook

When grief left them speechless, award-winning authors Julia Park Tracey and Christine Walker turned to fiction—not just to cope, but to give their sons a voice that would live on forever. In today's episode, I'm joined by Julia Park Tracey and Christine Walker—two accomplished creatives who have transformed personal grief into meaningful art. Julia is an award-winning author, journalist, and publisher at Sibylline Press. Her historical novels The Bereaved and Silence are inspired by ancestral stories and deeply shaped by the loss of her stepson. Christine is a visual artist, designer, and writer whose novel Tap Dancing at the Bluebird, drawn from her grandmother's Depression-era diaries, was reimagined through the lens of losing her son, Quinn. Both women use their work to explore themes of loss, healing, and transformation.Throughout this episode, Julia and Christine share how their sons' deaths profoundly influenced their creative processes. Julia describes how grief deepened the emotional truth of her characters and led her to speak openly about loss, both in life and on the page. Christine talks about infusing her novel's character with Quinn's essence—his “quinescence”—to give him a lasting literary presence, and how painting helped her process pain when words failed. Together, they reflect on the healing power of storytelling and the ways creativity can offer connection, comfort, and a sense of continuity through grief.Tune in to episode 328 as Julia Park Tracey and Christine Walker share how channeling their grief into writing and art helped them honor their sons, process profound loss, and discover a lasting sense of connection, creativity, and healing. In This Episode, You Will Learn:Julia's story: Writing through historical grief and personal loss (1:14)Christine's journey: From garden journals to literary healing (6:12)Giving their sons a literary afterlife (9:40)How grief alters language and social norms (14:17)To tell or not to tell: Sharing a child's death publicly (17:24)Redefining happiness: Can we ever feel joy again? Taking risk as a path to grow is exactly what Dr. Mimi Zieman believes and did. In her memoir Tap Dancing on Everest: A Young Doctor's Unlikely Adventure, Mimi takes us through her journey. As a 3rd year medical student Mimi joined an expedition attempting a new route on the East Face of Mt. Everest as the doctor. Mimi would be the only woman. A conversation about a coming of age story and the risks we take to become our truest selves. A child of immigrants, her father a Holocaust survivor, Mimi delves into the struggles she faced as a young woman. She is candid about her eating disorder, feeling small and how tap dancing helped her find her voice.
Welcome back to another episode of The Video Store Podcast, where we dive into some classic films you might want to add to your watchlist. This week, I am focusing on two sports, one dance and a coming-of-age story with a side of sports from the late '70s and '80s. I've picked out four films that capture the character with determination, who try to succeed despite the against them.Breaking Away (1979)This charming film follows a group of friends in Bloomington, Indiana, who are trying to find their place in the world after high school. The story centers around Dave, a young man obsessed with Italian cycling. What makes "Breaking Away" stand out is its authentic portrayal of friendship and the tension between townies and college kids. It artfully crafted, and the film won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.Vision Quest (1985)"Vision Quest" is a story about a high school wrestler named Louden Swain, who is determined to drop two weight classes to take on the best wrestler in the state. This film is a great blend of sports action and personal growth. Look out for a young Madonna performing "Crazy for You" in one of her early film appearances. It's a testament to the lengths one will go to achieve their goals.Lucas (1986)This heartwarming film tells the story of Lucas, a small, nerdy kid with a big heart, navigating the complexities of high school life. Corey Haim delivers a memorable performance (my favorite of his), and the film features early roles for Winona Ryder and Charlie Sheen. "Lucas" tackles themes of acceptance, friendship, and the pain of unrequited love. It's a near-genuine portrayal of the highs and lows of adolescence. Listen to the commercial I play in the show, it's very misleading.Tap (1989)"Tap" showcases the incredible talent of Gregory Hines as Max, a former tap dancer turned burglar trying to reclaim his passion for dance. The film beautifully blends the art of tap dancing with a compelling storyline about redemption and the pursuit of one's true calling. The dance scenes are a highlight, featuring legendary tap dancers like Sammy Davis Jr. It's a must-watch for fans of dance. These four films offer a mix of people on different paths, but each one provides a unique perspective on the struggles and triumphs of determined people. I hope you enjoy these recommendations and find some new favorites to revisit. Today's Friday episode opens, as is customary, with Tara Bull's Top 10 News Items the Legacy/mainstream media likely didn't tell you about this week. It's always great to go through those in rapid-fire style before diving into the news stack. Nothing says celebrating Independence Day like illegal migrants on the streets of Philadelphia lighting American flags on fire, while waving those of Palestine and Hamas. And, since I'm discussing pro-Hamas, pro-terrorist, anti-Semite, anti-Constitutional, anti-America people, let's check out four members of the Squad. It seems Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) all chose not to wish their constituents a Happy 4th of July. Today's jobs report is not nearly as good as the Left wants you to believe. Plus, they quietly revised the past two months numbers down over 111,000 jobs. We also saw unemployment go up to 4.1%. And, 74% of the jobs were in the public sector or healthcare. Next, we spend time going through more tap-dancing from the Leftist media outlets and their proxies. Joe Biden told Democrat Governors that he needs to get more sleep and not work so hard. The AP said Biden is “sharp and focused, but sometimes confused and forgetful.” That ought to help. Joe Scarborough has found a 3rd position to take on Biden's debate performance. Peter Baker, Chief White House correspondent for the NYTimes put out a tweet where it is so hard to decide which side he favors as a “journalist.” Olivia Nuzzi with New York Magazine wants us to know she first heard about the disturbed interactions people were having with Joe Biden starting in January, but it took her seven months to finally write her story. She must really suck at what she does. Little Brian Stelter was back on his on CNN and wants us to believe Democrats are must more pious and sanctified because they are at least having the conversation over replacing Joe Biden. Those waskily wepublicans are sticking with a “convicted felon.” VP Kamala Harris is on the damage control bandwagon. She is selling the tale that Joe is just as sharp and as on the ball as ever. He just had a bad night, but we need to give him some time to show the world he's totally fine. Similarly, the self-appointed consiglere of the Biden Crime Family Syndicate is out pushing the same narrative. Axios, however, may have revealed the most concerning item to today. It seems three of Jill Biden's closest advisers and confidants are the ones surrounding Joe Biden, where he's lost all independence. I don't remember voting for Annie, Ashley and Anthony, the triple A's, to call the shots. We start to wind down with the State Supreme Court in Wisconsin shooting down the law preventing ballot drop boxes. Seems they are pretty focused on being able to use them for cheating once again. We remind you of Kamala's soft bigotry of low-expectation stance regarding voter ID laws. And, we remind you that the VP is a very low-IQ person, even when she tries so hard to sound smart.
