It feels like it's been a long time, even though it's only been a week away from each other. After only a reasonable amount of goofs, we get right down to the brassiest of tacks. We start overviewing around 4 minutes in.  At the 40 minute mark, we get to your questions! Unsurprisingly, writing a 70s comic about a black hero based on blaxploitation tropes would have been weighty in the 70s, and it's definitely still a rousing topic today. We want to make one thing clear here: black lives matter. If you feel like "all lives matter" is a fair statement, it's important to note that only when black lives matter will all lives matter. Nothing we say in this strange, performance art podcast where we tell real stories about fake comics should take anything away from that truth. We trust our listenership to understand that. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman spoke with former boxer, kickboxer, and MMA fighter, and current trainer, nutritionist, and activist, Omowale Adewale. We spoke with him by phone Tuesday. The December 14 episode of late-night hit TV show "The Rundown with Robin Thede", shown on BET in the U.S., had a feature on a Russian troll operation known as "Black Fist". We discussed this with Omowale, how they tricked him into being associated with it (and how I was tricked into covering "Black Fist"), how all he did was conduct self-defense and martial arts training he was already doing and still does, how Black people were being used as a "pawn" in it, and the political implications of this scam. We also discussed the treatment of this scam by the media, and how shows by Black women such as Robin Thede and Karen Hunter provided the best coverage. Now that he is retired as a fighter, he has had more time to devote to training people, both adults and youth, in fitness, combat sports, and self-defense. "In terms of fitness, I'm training people mornings and evenings, which started in November. This is a few months after I stopped fighting. I just started training people more often," he said. "Now I'm doing a Brooklyn Boxing Boot Camp." This is all part of a greater effort he has been involved with for many years. "My organization, which has been around for 16 years, we're a small group of folks, Grassroots Artists MovEment, G.A.ME Inc., we have a space in Bed-Stuy, and what we do is focus on addressing the socio-economic conditions of Black and people of color in our community, particularly poor working class." He also has initiated a vitally important project called "Black Men Dismantle Patriarchy and Misogynoir", where Black men meet to discuss how to fight misogynoir (which is misogyny directed towards Black women), and to support and protect Black women and girls. We discussed how all this is part of the struggle against white supremacy, how his work helps the community get various resources and nutrition information, the need to fight "toxic masculinity", why people need to get organized and get skilled and get fit, and much more. Time to talk about H.R. "Slim" Walker! Show Notes: Run time: 83:28 We're doing things slightly differently today: instead of moving through the character's life chronologically, we go in order of what stuff appeared in the pages of Sentinel Comics. We start by talking about the character Black Fist! This art is the only depiction of Black Fist in the Sentinels of the Multiverse card game: (Hint: In this art, Black Fist is neither Legacy nor the giant green space alien person. He's the other person. The one next to Legacy.) Twelveish minutes into the episode, we move forward to talking about "Slim" - who then becomes Mister Fixer - he looks like the first image posted above. Just a guy who works in an auto shop. Around the 18 minute mark, we rewind to actually go into Harry Robert Walker's complete backstory, starting from his youth. At 19:20, we talk about terrible cities. Adam mentions Baghdad. Turns out, the city with the highest murder rate in the world is Caracas, Venezuela. Which is where Christopher grew up. So, that's cool? No worries, though - we live in St. Louis now. Which is #15 on this list. OH GEEZE. Around 33:30, the Dark Watch story comes up. We don't look at the art - just talk about it from memory. Christopher thinks that Legacy's boots do a "flop-over thing". They do not. Adam thinks Legacy is wearing his underwear on the outside.
