Jason then moves on to selections from John Williams' 2000 score THE PATRIOT, which Intrada Records recently released to commemorate its 25th anniversary, Trevor Jones' score for the 1982 Jim Henson-directed dark fantasy THE DARK CRYSTAL (La La Land Records), and, as a tribute to the late John Morgan, music from the 1982 sci-fi horror THE AFTERMATH (Dragon Domain Records). The show continues with a 2024 re-recording of Dimitri Tiomkin's score for the 1958 adventure drama THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA (Intrada Records), followed by music from the 1972 science fiction horror film HORROR EXPRESS by John Cavacas (Quartet Records/Citadel Records), and selections from Nile Rodgers' score for the 1994 comedy sequel BEVERLEY HILLS COP III (La La Land Records). Thank goodness I have a wonderful community of patrons over there, they understand and waited patiently for the show to be done.  Fast forward almost 365 days, and here we are; everything has been re-recorded, re-edited, and... The Grudge is a 2004 American supernatural horror film directed by Takashi Shimizu, written by Stephen Susco. A remake of Shimizu's 2002 Japanese horror film Ju-On: The Grudge, it is the first installment in The Grudge film series. It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jason Behr, KaDee Strickland, Clea DuVall, and Bill Pullman. Takako Fuji, Yuya Ozeki, and Takashi Matsuyama portray the main family characters from the original films. The film was produced by Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, and Takashige Ichise, who brought Shimizu, director of the original Japanese films, to the US for this remake. The music for the film was composed by horror score aficionado Christopher Young. It's been a while since true crime writer Ellison Oswalt had a bestseller, and the strain is starting to show on Ellison, his wife Tracy, and their kids Trevor and Ashley.  Local law enforcement isn't keen on him, either, as his last few books didn't cast them in too fond a light. So Ellison and his family take up residence in a modest Pennsylvania ranch house with something of a history – something we learn when we watch as a family is lynched in the house's back yard.  Unfortunately, this may be his last chance at the big time, so Ellison neglects to inform Tracy of this, and when things start going bump in the night, and the home movies left behind reveal ominous clues about a killer's identity, Ellison finds himself turning from the hunter to the hunted.  A helpful deputy steps in to assist, as well as a professor of the occult, but by the time they reveal their own information, the situation has devolved from strange… to sinister. Colin Aguiar is an award-winning Indian-Candian composer based in Los Angeles who specializes in film scoring. When Christine Brown, a young bank loan officer, must decide whether to grant a third extension on the loan of one Sylvia Ganush, who's already defaulted on two – she's in a real quandary. Imagine a world where pain and pleasure are one and the same, where hellish delights await those who crave the extremities of sensation. That's the philosophical underpinning behind Clive Barker's Hellraiser series, one of horror's most long-running and iconic franchises, centering around the poor unfortunate souls who come across the Lamarchand Box, a mysterious puzzle box which -- when opened -- unleashes the Cenobites, a cabal of deformed hedonists riding the razor's edge of sadomasochistic experience.   It's a series that's run across eleven films over thirty-plus years, the latest being a radical reimagining courtesy of The Night House and Relative director David Bruckner. This time, series icon Pinhead is reimagined as a "dark priest" played by Sense8's Jamie Clayton, who soon haunts a recovering addict named Riley (Odessa A'zion), who crosses paths with the Lamarchand Box after her brother goes missing. It's a film filled with grim delights and no small amount of squicky body horror, as our characters learn firsthand what happens when otherworldly forces conspire to tear your soul apart.   Just as the Cenobites explore the curious intersections between blood and beauty, so does Bruckner's regular composer, Ben Lovett, experiment with different configurations of his musical puzzle box. In addition to his distinctive use of electronic elements and discordant, warped instrumentation, he finds ways to weave in Christopher Young's classic theme from the 1991 original, tying it to Hellraisers of the past while cementing Bruckner's version as its own unique beast.   Now, Ben and I talk about his score to Hellraiser, his collaboration with David Bruckner, and much more (alongside commentary tracks from the score).   You can find Ben Lovett at his official website here.   Hellraiser is currently streaming on Hulu. Christopher Young had a long and distinguished career in horror before he came to the 2012 film Sinister, but this time around, he tried out something different. Rather than go with his typical orchestral sound, he instead created a score out of audio sampling and sound effects. For Raul Vega (Rose Drive), the effect was immensely disturbing and thrilling. Composer Aldo Shllaku sits down for a great conversation about his score to the star-studded comedy The Comeback Trail! We discuss his childhood, his family having to escape communism, planting roots in a new country, finding his passion for music, and how he decided to go into composition.
