Welcome to the latest Midlife Minute. Today, I'm taking a closer look at oral contraceptive use in perimenopause and menopause, exploring how oral contraceptives work, how they suppress or blunt perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, alter hormone signaling and testing, what women may experience when they stop taking them, and why the gut microbiome is an essential part of the conversation. IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: How oral contraceptives suppress certain key signaling hormones, making it difficult to assess women's menopausal status accurately What women may experience when transitioning off oral contraceptives How long-term oral contraceptive use can alter gut microbial function and inflammatory pathways The association between long-term oral contraceptive use and nutrient depletion Why the standard reproductive hormone markers used to assess menopause (especially FSH/LH) are unreliable while on the pill How the microbiome changes that occur as women age may compound the effects of previous oral contraceptive use Helpful dietary, microbiome, and lifestyle strategies to support women navigating the post-pill transition Connect with Cynthia Thurlow Follow on X, Instagram & LinkedIn Check out Cynthia's website. Unprocessed red meat and cancer risk remains one of the most debated topics in nutrition science, partly because the evidence is often presented in overly simplistic terms. The key question is not whether to adopt a vague "balanced" position on red meat, but whether the evidence clearly identifies intake levels at which colorectal cancer risk increases and whether controlled human trials support plausible mechanisms for that risk. A second issue is whether claims that fibre, vegetables, or an otherwise "healthy diet" can neutralise high red meat intake are actually supported by the mechanistic evidence, or whether they overstate what dietary context can plausibly offset. In this episode, Danny and Alan examine the evidence base by moving beyond the usual epidemiology-only debate. They discuss why regional intake patterns and dose thresholds matter, then explore controlled human feeding studies showing how higher red meat intake can increase endogenous N-nitroso compound formation, faecal water genotoxicity, and other mechanistic biomarkers linked to colorectal carcinogenesis. Dr. Michael Weinstein interviews Dr. Donevan Westerveld of Borland Groover in Jacksonville, Florida, about how his practice uses InterStim therapy to care for patients with fecal incontinence, a condition that affects an estimated 18 million Americans. Despite the availability of effective treatments, fecal incontinence is under-diagnosed and under-treated, and roughly two thirds of those affected never discuss it with a physician. InterStim is a small, implanted device developed by Medtronic that helps restore communication between the brain and the nerves that control bowel function. Join Dr. Weinstein and Dr. Westerveld as they discuss why Borland Groover brought InterStim therapy in-house, what it takes to integrate it into a GI practice, and how independent gastroenterologists can position themselves to care for patients who may otherwise go undiagnosed or untreated. Full Show Notes: bengreenfieldlife.com/fmt In this episode, you'll get to uncover one of the most intriguing developments in gut health—fecal microbiota transplants (FMTs). Joining me is Jason Klop, CEO of Novel Biome, who brings cutting-edge insight into how FMT is transforming from an obscure, hospital-based procedure into an accessible, precise, and surprisingly simple tool for optimizing your microbiome at home. We’ll break down how FMT is now being used for everything from irritable bowel issues to food sensitivities, and why the technology has advanced well beyond its origins. You'll also hear about the meticulous screening behind “super donors,” the science of oral FMT capsules, and the real-world results you can expect—including my own personal experience. Whether you’re looking to boost your gut health, support your immune system, or simply curious about the connection between your microbiome and overall vitality, this episode has what you need to stay on the cutting edge of holistic wellness. Jason Klop brings a clinical background in naturopathic medicine to his role as founder and CEO of Novel Biome, Canada's first licensed manufacturer of Fecal Microbiota Transplant (FMT) products. Having personally treated hundreds of patients with FMT in clinical practice, Jason saw a gap in the availability of safe, standardized microbiome restoration therapies and set out to build the infrastructure himself. Today, Novel Biome supplies FMT products to clinics, hospitals, and clinical trials around the world. On this Part 2 episode of the Beyond the Barn podcast, host Katy Starr, Dr. Burt Staniar, Associate Professor of Animal Science at Penn State University, and Dr. Kelly Vineyard continue their discussion about how diet plays a role in free fecal water syndrome, including: Why forage should always be the foundation of your horse's diet How different fiber sources (like beet pulp, alfalfa, and grass hay) impact gut health What “forage quality” really means and how hay maturity can affect digestion Practical feeding strategies to apply when you can't control your horse's hay (e.g. when your horse is at a boarding facility) The truth about supplements (and when they're actually worth it) If your horse struggles with free fecal water syndrome, or even if you'd just like to better understand equine gut health, hindgut function, and forage nutrition as the foundation of your horse's diet, this episode is jam packed with practical, science-backed insights you can start applying to support your horse. If you haven't listened to Part 1 yet, be sure to go back to episode 111 for a deep dive on fiber and digestive health before getting into this episode!
On this Part 1 episode of the Beyond the Barn podcast, host Katy Starr chats with Dr. Burt Staniar, Associate Professor of Animal Science at Penn State University, and Dr. Kelly Vineyard about the science behind free fecal water syndrome, including: Why two diets with the same fiber content can behave very differently in the horse's hindgut What free fecal water syndrome is and how it differs from diarrhea Why some horses might be more susceptible Free fecal water syndrome can be a frustrating and confusing issue for horse owners, with what looks like normal manure, but water leaking separately. This episode sets the stage for Part 2, where we'll dive into practical feeding and management strategies that may help support horses dealing with free fecal water syndrome.
In this episode of The Turd Nerds, the Turds are joined by Dr. Mark Davis, ND and we take a deep dive into the strange but powerful world of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT)—what happens when you transplant an entire microbial ecosystem into the human gut and why it can be so effective for certain diseases. We explore why FMT is nearly curative for C. difficile, how dosing and delivery affect outcomes in ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, and share striking clinical stories of severe inflammatory bowel disease improving after repeated treatments. This conversation explores the complex and deeply human relationship between gut health and mental wellbeing. Srinivas Kamath shares insights from his research into the gut–brain axis, unpacking how hormones, stress, medication and diet intersect at the microbiome level. We discuss the limitations of current mental health treatments, the growing promise of prebiotics, and why personalised medicine may be the future of emotional and cognitive care. The episode also looks ahead to emerging research in longevity, GLP-1 therapies and the role of the gut in neurodegenerative disease, offering a grounded yet hopeful view of where this science is heading. Key Takeaways The gut and brain operate in constant two-way communication, influencing mood, cognition and emotional regulation. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol can compromise the gut lining, contributing to inflammation and so-called leaky gut. Female hormones shape the microbiome across the lifespan, and gut health in turn affects hormonal balance. Understanding an individual’s microbiome opens the door to truly personalised approaches to mental and emotional health. Many psychiatric medications alter the gut microbiome, which may explain common side effects and variable outcomes. Prebiotics play a foundational role in supporting a resilient and diverse microbiome. For most people, prebiotics are more effective and sustainable than probiotic supplementation alone. GLP-1 is central to appetite regulation, gut signalling and broader metabolic and mental health pathways. The vagus nerve acts as a key communication highway between the gut and the brain.Gut microbiome research is rapidly evolving, with more questions than definitive answers at this stage. ✨Hey! This week looks a little different around here — on purpose. Instead of our usual rhythm, I'm airing five episodes in five days. Think of it as a mini-series designed especially for you — curated, fun, and binge-worthy. Fewer cliffhangers, more “ohhh… that makes sense.” Every episode this week features a conversation from a show I've been invited onto as a guest — hosted by smart, generous people you'll genuinely enjoy listening to. Each episode stands on its own. Together, they create momentum. So if you've been listening here and there, this is a great week to lean in. Start wherever you want — or (best option) listen in order and let the through-line reveal itself. Either way, I'd love to hear what you think. Happiest and Healthiest Holidays to you and your loved ones. ✨ Episode Title: Your Gut Is Running the Whole Shebang (Whether You Realize It or Not) Why leaky gut, low stomach acid, and chronic stress quietly shape your energy, mood, and ability to slow aging There's a reason gut health keeps coming back into the conversation - the body has a way of forcing the conversation when it's been ignored long enough. In this episode of Wellness Your Way Podcast, Megan Lyons and I skip the wellness buzzwords and get into the uncomfortable truth: a lot of people aren't “mysteriously” inflamed, exhausted, anxious, or reactive — their gut has been under chronic stress for years, and it's finally showing up in symptoms they can't muscle through anymore. We talk about what leaky gut actually means (and why it's not a fringe diagnosis), how food sensitivities are often created by stress and inflammation, not something you're doomed with forever, and why digestion is one of the first systems to shut down when the body feels under pressure. This isn't a perfect-diet episode. It's a physiology-first conversation about digestion, immunity, hormones, and why the body stops whispering and starts shouting when no one's listening. In This Episode, We Cover: 00:02 – Why the gut is more than digestion (hello serotonin, immunity, and your “second brain”) 06:00 – Leaky gut explained without the fear-mongering (and why most people misunderstand it) 11:00 – Food sensitivities: why everything you love suddenly feels reactive 15:30 – The 3 R's of gut healing: remove, replace, restore 19:45 – Autoimmunity, Hashimoto's, and the gut connection no one warned you about 24:00 – Low stomach acid: when reflux isn't what you think it is 28:30 – Candida, sugar cravings, and the symptoms people never connect to the gut 33:30 – What to add in for a healthier microbiome (without chasing perfection) 36:30 – Fecal transplants, postbiotics, and where gut research is actually headed 39:30 – My real-life self-care routine (the non-glamorous version) The Bigger Takeaway Gut health isn't about obsessing over every bite or eliminating everything you enjoy. It's about creating an internal environment where digestion works, inflammation calms down, and the nervous system isn't constantly bracing for impact. When the gut is compromised, the body doesn't whisper — it compensates… until it can't. This episode is an invitation to stop treating symptoms in isolation and start looking at the system underneath them. Where To Find Me
Fecal incontinence (FI) affects nearly 8% of adults worldwide, yet many people suffer in silence due to embarrassment, confusion, or the belief that nothing can be done. This episode is here to change that. We're joined by Dr. John William Blackett, gastroenterologist and lead author of "Fecal Incontinence in Adults: New Therapies," published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. Dr. Blackett offers a compassionate, patient-centered overview of FI, including common causes, diagnostic testing, and the full range of treatment options available today—highlighting newer and emerging therapies. If you've experienced unexpected leakage, urgency, staining, or difficulty controlling bowel movements—or if you support someone who has—this conversation provides clarity, reassurance, and practical guidance. Effective treatments exist, and help is available. This episode is produced in collaboration with the American College of Gastroenterology Patient Care Committee.

On this episode of Vitality Radio, Jared sits down with Dr. Jason Klop, founder of Novel Biome, to explore one of the most fascinating and misunderstood frontiers in health: fecal microbiota transplant (FMT). Often misnamed “fecal matter transplant,” FMT is a highly purified process that restores microbial diversity in the gut—far beyond what probiotics alone can achieve. Jared and Dr. Klop discuss why FMT is gaining traction in digestive health, neurological conditions, and immune balance, and how it differs from traditional probiotic supplementation. You'll learn about the rigorous donor screening process, oral vs. rectal delivery methods, and why gut microbiome diversity is critical for overall vitality. The potential applications of FMT are broad and promising. This conversation pulls back the curtain on how supporting the gut ecosystem could impact everything from digestion and inflammation to mood and longevity.Additional Information:Novel BiomeNovel Biome - InstagramPodcast – Biome Breakthroughs (Spotify): Listen hereVisit the podcast website here: VitalityRadio.comYou can follow @vitalitynutritionbountiful and @vitalityradio on Instagram, or Vitality Radio and Vitality Nutrition on Facebook. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a therapy that restores balance in the gut by transferring healthy bacteria, helping patients escape the cycle of repeated antibiotic failures and infections A recent clinical trial found that FMT was safe and well tolerated in frail long-term care patients, showing fewer bloodstream infections and less antibiotic use than standard care Even though transplant recipients still carried resistant bacteria, they experienced fewer serious infections, proving that restoring microbiome diversity strengthens the body's defenses against harmful microbes A national registry of 259 patients showed 90% were cured of recurrent Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection after just one FMT treatment, with results lasting beyond six months FDA-approved products like Vowst and Rebyota now make FMT accessible in oral capsule and rectal forms, offering new hope for those facing stubborn gut infections
