On New Year's Day in New Orleans, a man drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people, killing 14 and leaving many others injured. In the aftermath law enforcement found an Islamic State flag in the truck, and evidence that shows the man was inspired by the extremist group. This wasn't the only Islamic State-inspired incident in recent months.Today on “Post Reports,” guest host Rachel Siegel speaks with national security reporter Joby Warrick about how people become radicalized by the Islamic State and what the New Orleans attack and the canceled Taylor Swift concerts in Austria tell us about the power of extremist propaganda. Warrick's book “Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS” was awarded a 2016 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction. Today's show was produced by Elana Gordon, with help from Ariel Plotnick and Rennie Svirnovskiy. It was edited by Monica Campbell, with help from Reena Flores, and mixed by Sam Bair.Subscribe to The Washington Post here.

Historically, when the proper dominoes are arranged and then fall in the correct order, amazing and positive things can happen, unfortunately, however, that same reality exists for evil and darkness as well. This is the story of ISIS, a very real form of indescribable evil that still exists and even thrives in parts of the world today. On today's episode I welcome 2-time Pulitzer Prize winning author and Washington Post correspondent, Mr. Joby Warrick, to discuss his 2016 Pulitzer Prize winning book, Black Flags, the rise of ISIS. We discuss his background as a journalist, his road to developing a passion and interest in Middle East politics and events, and how the dominoes of history laid a framework for one of the darkest and most evil ideologies to ever exist, and allowed it to germinate and spread throughout much of the middle east. This is part 1 of our 4 part series. Enjoy!

Global I.Q. with Jim Falk

When Syrian president Bashar al-Assad deployed chemical weapons against his own people in 2012, he crossed the “red line” drawn by President Obama. To avoid committing to another never-ending war, the U.S. president accepted Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer to facilitate the removal of Assad’s chemical weapons. But it soon became clear that Russia’s end goal was to preserve Assad’s rule, leaving the U.S. with dwindling influence over the outcome of the civil war in Syria – all the while ISIS gained more territory as the group took advantage of the gaping power vacuum created by the region’s instability. In Red Line, Joby Warrick draws on his original reporting to tell “a character-driven narrative” about how avoiding one catastrophe can unintentionally lead to another. Joby Warrick is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and national security reporter for the Washington Post. In addition to Red Line, Warrick has authored two books – “Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS” and “The Triple Agent”, which recounts the 2009 suicide attack by an al-Qaeda informant that killed seven U.S. intelligence operatives. Warrick holds a BA in journalism from Temple University. Moderated by Jim Falk, who served as president and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth for twenty years and is co-host of “The McCuistion Program,” public television’s long-running weekly discussion forum syndicated by the Foundation for Responsible Television. . . [6:10] Who is Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, really? [9:25] Warrick discusses Zarqawi and his relationship with his mother. [13:45] How did prison make Zarqawi more radical? [16:10] Prison helped form a brotherhood, a university, for a lot of these men. [21:25] Zarqawi and his associates were disowned by Al-Qaeda because they were almost too brutal. [22:20] ISIS and Al-Qaeda do not like each other. Al-Qaeda views them as ‘crazy heretics.’ [27:55] How was Zarqawi connected to Saddam's regime? [32:30] The U.S. decided to wait until after after the Iraq invasion to go after Zarqawi. [40:05] Zarqawi created a new and more brutal form of terrorism. [47:55] Zarqawi died by the hands of American soldiers. We finally got him! [48:20] The third part of Warrick’s book focuses on ISIS. [48:45] If Zarqawi was neutralized, how did ISIS rise up in Syria? [56:35] Who is Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and what was his role in all of this? [1:01:10] When ISIS takes credit for terrorist attacks/acts of violence, is it really them or are they just capitalizing on an opportunity? [1:02:50] What is happening in Iraq right now? [1:09:25] Warrick revisits the Sykes-Picot Agreement, and how it still applies today. [1:12:50] Where does Jordan stand in all of this?   Mentioned in This Episode: Joby Warrick Joby Warrick on Wikipedia Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS, by Jody Warrick

ISIS surged to international prominence following its audacious prison camp raids in 2013 in Iraq, freeing more than 500 Iraqi insurgents. ISIS has since carried out increasingly bold attacks in Syria and beyond, cementing its reputation as a group more violent and ruthless than any that came before it. No longer an insurgency, ISIS’ focus is to establish its own rule on conquered territory, and declare a worldwide caliphate. Of course the roots of ISIS trace deeper, and are much more intertwined with the interventions of the West than they first appear. Today’s ISIS jihadists are the "children of Zarqawi," General Michael Flynn would later warn Congress, referring to Abu Musab Zarqawi, the once-obscure jihadist who led Al Qaeda in Iraq and laid ISIS’ philosophical foundations. How did Abu Musab Zarqawi, a “small-time thug,” rise to such world-changing prominence? How did ISIS emerge so forcefully from the chaos, and power struggles, of competing jihadist groups? Did the efforts of the West to crack down on Al Qaeda, inadvertently fuel the growth of ISIS ten years later? Pulitzer Prize winner Joby Warrick, a reporter with The Washington Post since 1996, will address these issues in a conversation at World Affairs about the birth of ISIS. His latest book, “Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS,” pursues a thoughtful reflection on the origins the most notorious terror group in the world today. As part of our "Engage" series, this event features a post-discussion Q&A, when you will have the chance to participate directly with the speaker and gain incredible insights that you won't get anywhere else.
