¡Estoy harto de los eléctricos! Y me apetecía hacer un vídeo divertido, probablemente muy “petrolhead”… bueno, sí, ¿y qué? Y es que el Turbo, para muchos, entre ellos para mí, sigue teniendo magia… Y ya os lo adelanto: Este vídeo va a ser muy polémico, ¿el motivo? Pues que 10, son pocos… y he huido de los más conocidos. En este vídeo vamos a huir de los “caminos trillados”, de lo obvio, y vamos a tratar de sorprenderos… al menos lo vamos a intentar. Por eso no aparecen coches que, viendo el titular, sería lógico esperar que estuviesen aquí. Me refiero a modelo como el Audi Quattro, el BMW 2002, el actual BMW M2 Competition que me gustó mucho cuando lo probé, el Fiat Uno Turbo, los Ford Fiesta o Escort Turbo, los Lancia Delta Integrale o S4, ningún Porche Turbo, ni siquiera un 911, ni los Renault 5 Turbo y Supercinco GT Turbo, entre otros. He elegido modelos quizás no tan conocidos, pero coches que se convirtieron en iconos o verdaderas referencias gracias al turbo. Hemos elegido coches que van entre los años 1962 y 2019, aunque abundan los coches “ochenteros” … De cada coche os voy a contar más o menos tres cosas: Primero, de sus credenciales, o sea, datos técnicos destacables. Segundo, de los argumentos por los que he incluido cada coche en esta lista. Y tercero, de cómo iba el coche, mi experiencia con ellos y alguna anécdota. Vamos con la lista. 1. Audi 200 Turbo 5T (1979) Sus credenciales, un motor de 2.144 cm3, cinco cilindros, con turbocompresor KKK, y 182 CV. En su momento la tracción delantera más potente del mercado, con una aceleración de 0 a 100 km/h en 8,1 segundos y una velocidad máxima de 230 km/h. 2. BMW Turbo (1972) Impresionante diseño de Paul Bracq, motor 2 litros de 280 CV, una punta de 280 km/h y una aceleración de 0 a 100 km/h en 6,6 segundos. Siempre que se habla de BMW y turbo se habla del 2002… pero hoy no, porque este prototipo, presentado con motivo de los Juegos Olímpicos de 1972 en Múnich, me parece un espectáculo hoy día… imaginad en 1972. Fue el precursor del famoso BMW M1. 3. Citroën CX 25 GTi Turbo 2 (1984) Sus credenciales: Todo en CX con 2,5 litros, turbocompresor Garrett T3, 168 CV y más de 210 km/h de velocidad máxima. La combinación del Turbo y la suspensión hidroneumática obró maravillas y este coche, en su momento, era una verdadera pasada… en mi opinión no había nada igual para viajar rápido, cómodo y seguro. 4. Ford Capri Turbo (1981) En Ford se conformaron con poco, pues el motor V6 2.8 atmosférico daba unos 160 CV y el turbo 188 CV… pero las prestaciones eran notables: 220 km/h de velocidad máxima y 8,0 segundos de 0 a 100 km/h. 5. Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 (1987) Algunos pensaréis, “no ibas a huir de lo evidente”. Sí. por eso no he elegido el Ford Sierra RS Cosworth sino la versión especial utilizada para homologar las mejoras para el coche de rallyes y para las carreras en circuito de Grupo A, el RS500. 6. Nissan GT-R Nismo (2019) Unas credenciales impresionantes: Motor 3.8 V6 biturbo de 600 CV en esta versión NISMO, 315 Km/h de punta y un 0 a 100 km/h en 2.8 segundos… Lo más curioso, su transmisión con motor delantero unido por un eje longitudinal al cambio posterior, del que parten los semiejes para la propulsión trasera y otro árbol de transmisión hacia delante para la tracción delantera, pues es 4x4… el único modelo de producción con dos árboles de transmisión uno de ellos de fibra de carbono. 7. Nissan Micra K10 March Super Turbo (1988) Una rareza. Pero este Nissan con un motor de solo 930 cm3, lo mismo que un modesto Seat 127, ofrecía 110 CV. Para Nissan era una forma de demostrar que, gracias al turbo, un modelo modesto podía ser deportivo… y lo cierto es que el March causó furor en Japón. 8. Oldsmobile Jetfire Rocket (1962) Este “Cohete” de Oldsmobile fue el primer coche que montó un turbo de la Historia. El motor V8 de 3,5 litros gracias al turbo entregaba 215 CV a solo 4.600 rpm, superaba los 200 km/h y hacia el 0 a 100 km/h en poco más de 9 segundos. Sólo se fabricaron 9.000 y el coche dio muchos problemas… tanto que muchos usuarios directamente quitaron el turbo. Se calcula que hoy día apenas sobrevive en 100 unidades con el motor original. 9. Saab 900 Turbo (1978) En este caso, las credenciales no son datos técnicos, sino el hecho de que muchos se olvidan del papel que jugó Saab en los comienzos y en la popularización del turbo. Saab se convirtió en una auténtica especialista en materia de turboalimentación. El Saab 900 Turbo contaba con un motor turboalimentado de 2.0 litros y 145 CV que la prensa especializada calificó como una obra de arte. Tenía prestaciones superiores a las de sus competidores y una respuesta al acelerador sin apenas retraso. 10. Volvo 480 Turbo (1988) Sus credenciales pueden parecer modestas: Motor de 1,7 litros, 120 CV aceleración de 0 a 100 km/h en 9,0 segundos y más 200 km/h de velocidad máxima. Pero es que este modelo aparecido en el Salón de Ginebra de 1986 supuso una revolución para la marca. Dos años después se presentaba el Turbo. El 480 ES no solo era coupé y luego turbo, lo primero inusual, lo segundo más todavía, sino que se convirtió en el primer vehículo de tracción delantera de Volvo y contaba con un diseño verdaderamente audaz. Conclusión. Hoy día hay muchos coches que llevan turbo, aunque lo ocultan o al menos, no lo publicitan. Porque la huella de los años 80 y 90 hace que la palabra turbo se asocie a deportividad y prestaciones… valores que cotizan a la baja. La excepción es Porsche, que sigue presumiendo en sus modelos más prestacionales con este apellido… incluso los eléctricos como el Taycan tiene su versión “Turbo”. Pero el turbo permitió que muchos coches que merecían más motor y más caballos accedieran a ello de forma sencilla y barata… Podíamos acabar este vídeo con un alegato o un grito de “guerra” del tipo “¡Larga vida al Turbo!” … pero con la que está cayendo, no me atrevo. Coche del día. En esta lista no ha aparecido, pero ahora sí: El coche del día es el Renault 5 Copa Turbo, ¡no confundir con el GT Turbo! Fue el primero coche turbo que recuerdo que lleve y me pareció que el titular “Soplo mágico” le encajaba a la perfección.
