¿Qué tienen en común una carretilla elevadora, una Harley-Davidson, la cabina de un Airbus, un SEAT Ibiza y el metro de París? La respuesta, por increíble que parezca, es Porsche. Todos conocemos a la marca de Stuttgart por sus icónicos deportivos, su inconfundible sonido y su dominio en Le Mans. Pero esa es solo la mitad de la historia. Hoy desvelamos el universo secreto de Porsche Engineering, la faceta de "mercenarios de la tecnología" que ha resuelto problemas para clientes de todo el mundo, a menudo en la sombra y sin llevarse el crédito público. Para entender esta historia, hay que viajar a los orígenes. Antes de que existiera el primer coche con su apellido, Ferdinand Porsche fundó en 1931 una oficina de diseño e ingeniería. La implicación fue tan profunda que se estima que el 20% de sus piezas eran del catálogo de Porsche. No era un Audi modificado; era un Porsche con la insignia de los cuatro aros que creó de la nada el segmento de los "super-familiares". El resultado fue el motor "Revolution" de la V-Rod, un V-Twin que subía de vueltas como ninguna otra Harley lo había hecho jamás. -La Salvación de SEAT: Tras su ruptura con FIAT, la supervivencia de SEAT dependía del Ibiza. Porsche fue contratada para rediseñar su motor. El acuerdo para lucir la inscripción "System Porsche" en la culata fue una jugada maestra de marketing que salvó a la marca española y supuso un ingreso vital para la alemana. -Del Nürburgring a Corea: Para que la primera generación del Hyundai Coupé tuviera un comportamiento dinámico a la altura de los deportivos europeos, la marca coreana contrató en secreto a Porsche para la puesta a punto completa de su chasis y suspensiones. -De los Circuitos a los Almacenes: Desde hace más de 40 años, Porsche diseña las carretillas elevadoras de Linde. Aplicando la ergonomía de un 911 a la cabina del operario, han revolucionado el sector, demostrando que el buen diseño mejora la productividad y la rentabilidad. -Del Asfalto al Aire y al Subsuelo: La experiencia de Porsche en el diseño de puestos de conducción fue clave para que Airbus les contratara para optimizar la ergonomía de la cabina digital del avión A310. Y si alguna vez viajas en la línea 14 del metro de París, debes saber que el diseño exterior e interior de esos trenes (modelo MP14) fue encargado por Alstom al Porsche Design Studio. Como hemos visto, la excelencia de Porsche va mucho más allá de sus coches. Es la historia de un estudio de ingeniería universal, cuya necesidad de sobrevivir se convirtió en su mayor escuela. La conclusión es que esta “rama” de negocio de Porsche, tan poco conocida, ha sido y es de una importancia vital.

Pero… ¿y si os dijera que esta "traición" no es la primera vez que la hace Mercedes? ¿Y si os dijera que es una de las prácticas más antiguas en el mundo del motor? Como de costumbre, mi objetivo es sorprenderos. Hoy en Garaje Hermético vamos a descubrir alianzas impensables y coches legendarios o casi cuyo “corazón” es prestado… La noticia ha corrido como la pólvora: Mercedes-Benz podría empezar a usar motores de cuatro cilindros de BMW a partir de 2027. Antes de que los más puristas os se vayáis a las puertas de Stuttgart a manifestaros, ,hay que entender el por qué. Desarrollar un motor desde cero es una de las inversiones más costosas a las que se enfrenta un fabricante. Hablamos de cientos, a veces miles de millones de euros en investigación, desarrollo, pruebas, utillaje para las fábricas y, sobre todo, en superar las cada vez más estrictas normativas anticontaminación. En un mundo que supuestamente va hacia lo eléctrico, invertir una fortuna en un nuevo motor de combustión que tiene fecha de caducidad es una apuesta muy arriesgada. Por eso, las sinergias, las colaboraciones y las alianzas estratégicas están a la orden del día. A veces es por pura supervivencia, otras por acceder a una tecnología que no se posee, y en ocasiones, simplemente, porque otra marca ya ha fabricado el motor perfecto que necesitas. Mercedes-BMW (2027). El rumor que ha desatado este guion apunta a un futuro muy cercano. A partir de 2027, se espera que Mercedes utilice motores de cuatro cilindros de origen BMW. Mercedes-Renault (2012). Esta colaboración es el ejemplo perfecto de la estrategia moderna. Con la llegada de la tercera generación del Clase A (W176), Mercedes necesitaba un motor diésel pequeño y muy eficiente. Mitsubishi Lancer TDi (2007). Si te hablo de Lancer enseguida tu mente se va a los Rallyes… pero Mitsubishi necesitaba un motor diésel de 2 litros para ser competitiva en Europa con su nueva generación del Lancer. Y en lugar de desarrollar uno propio, recurrió al proveedor por excelencia de la época: Volkswagen. Chrysler Sebring-VW (2007). A mediados de los 2000, el mercado europeo demandaba berlinas diésel. Chrysler, que por entonces formaba parte de DaimlerChrysler, no tenía un motor de gasóleo competitivo de 2 litros. La solución fue fácil y directa: comprarle a Volkswagen su archiconocido motor 2.0 TDi de 140 CV. Lotus-Toyota (2004). Lotus es la quintaesencia del chasis perfecto y la ligereza, pero la fiabilidad no siempre fue su fuerte y nunca fabricó motores. Con la llegada del Elise 111R, la marca británica tomó una de sus mejores decisiones: usar el motor 2ZZ-GE de Toyota. Lamborghini Gallardo-Audi (2003). Un Audi R8 vestido de gala. Aquí entramos en sinergias de grupo, pero no deja de ser chocante para los más puristas. Koenigsegg CC8S-Ford (2002). La exclusiva marca sueca recurrió a un V8 muy "plebeyo" de Ford. Mercedes Vito VR6 (1996). Esta es una de esas colaboraciones que rompen todos los esquemas. A mediados de los 90, Mercedes necesitaba un motor de gasolina potente y refinado para el tope de gama de su nueva furgoneta, la Vito 280 de la serie W638. Aston Martin DB7 “by Jaguar” (1994). El Aston Martin DB7 salvó a la marca de la quiebra en los 90. Era precioso, elegante... y un puzle de piezas de otras marcas. Su plataforma derivaba del Jaguar XJS y su motor de seis cilindros en línea era una evolución de un bloque de Jaguar, convenientemente sobrealimentado por un compresor. McLaren-BMW F1 (1992). Para muchos, el mejor superdeportivo de todos los tiempos. Pero Gordon Murray no tenía motor. Llamó a la puerta de Honda y no le “abrieron”. ¿La solución? Talking BMW today, the best-selling German luxury brand after displacing Mercedes-Benz as the top luxury import last year. BMW has had a good degree of success with its EV range, and I recently drove the iX3 M-Sport SUV, the electric version of its best-selling mid-size X3 SUV, introduced earlier this year at $89,100, joining the more expensive iX3 M-Sport Pro. The iX3 M-Sport not as well equipped as its Pro stablemate but on first impression nicely packaged retaining the same powertrain – utilising an 80kWh battery to power a 210kW/400Nm electric motor driving the rear wheels only through a single speed transmission – offering a driving range of up to 460kms. The iX3 M-Sport features some nice M- Sport touches like high-gloss roof rails, M leather steering wheel and illuminated door finishes with BMW M inscription, leather trim and a panoramic glass sunroof. Only real give-away to the dearer Pro model is smaller 19-inch alloy wheels and the lack of a head up instrument display. The interior packaging first class, great seats, plus a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and same size infotainment screen, the latter very intuitive. But, just a space saver spare wheel. Un coche 100x100 eléctrico y con 650 CV… ¿es una estupidez? Para mí, sí. Rotundamente, sí. Vi una publicidad del Hyundai Ioniq 5N y rápidamente pensé en que tenía que hacer este podcast. Pero sigo con las aclaraciones: Lo primero de todo es que creo que no soy sospechoso de ser un “radical” anti coches eléctricos ni de tener nada en contra de la marca Hyundai. Siempre lo he dicho: Estoy convencido de que los eléctricos son una parte importante de “la solución”, pero no la única solución. Los eléctricos pequeños de rango medio son ideales para las personas que viven en la ciudad y alrededores. En cuanto a Hyundai es una marca a la que he estado muy unido, que me ha acompañado y ayudado en gran parte de mi trayectoria deportiva y que hace buenos coches y de calidad… Eso sí, ni una cosa ni la otra va a impedir que, como periodista, de mi opinión. Por cierto, me han decepcionado mucho los comentarios que han suscitado este coche entre la prensa del motor… Olvídate si es eléctrico, atómico, de gasolina o Diesel. La pregunta que hay que hacerse, para ponernos en contexto, es ¿para qué sirve un coche con 650 CV? Hemos elegido este Ioniq 5N, como representante de los eléctricos “musculosos” porque en su publicidad presume de su potencia. Veremos como cumple en cada apartado. Y le otorgaremos una nota de 0 a 10. Primero: Para presumir y “tirarte el rollo” con los amigos, los compañeros de trabajo o con el “cuñao” de turno.... La conversación podría ser, más o menos, esta: “Hola cuñao, que me han dicho que te has comprado un BMW M de 350 CV… ¿solo? Mi coche tiene 650 CV… y es que, mira cuñao, por debajo de 500 CV no hay vida… ¡a ver si compras un coche decente!”. Salvo que el cuñao o los compañeros o los amigos hayan visto este video, esto el Ioniq lo hace muy bien. Así que de nota le ponemos un… ¡8! Segundo: Para viajar muy deprisa. Aquí tenemos tres problemas, uno grave, uno muy grave y otro gravísimo. Por orden: Si vas muy rápido… no llegas, pues la autonomía cae en picado y a 180 km/h no haces ni 200 km ni seguramente 150… si llevas calefacción o aire. Este es el grave. El muy grave… ¡es ilegal! En España y en casi todos los países civilizados. Y el gravísimo, es peligroso. O sea, que en este caso la nota es, sencillamente, de… ¡0!… ni se puede ni se debe viajar rápido con este coche. Ni con ninguno. Tercero: Para disfrutar en las carreteras con curvas. Según la marca este coche pesa 2,3 toneladas… ¿un coche de ese peso es divertido en carreteras de curvas? La mayor parte de las furgonetas de reparto son más agiles. Pero bueno, al menos entre curva y curva, podemos acelerar como bestias… Eso sí, no plantees recorridos muy largos… ¡que no llegas! Así que es este caso la nota es de… ¡3!... me siento generoso. Cuarto: Para acelerar como un poseso, pues anuncia una aceleración de 0 a 100 en 3,4 segundos. Pues sí, si ya los coches eléctricos aceleran de maravilla, con esta potencia te convertirás en el rey de las aceleraciones… y de las frenadas cuando llegues al siguiente semáforo al coche de delante… ¿Hacen falta 650 CV para moverse con agilidad en tráfico urbano? No. Así que le vamos a poner de nota… aprobado “pelón” … un ¡5! Para derrapar: Pues si quieres un coche para derrapar, no te compres éste, porque hay opciones más baratas, más ligeras y más deportivas. Además, ¡ojo! este coche es tracción total. Y no tienes 650 CV. Para empezar, los 650 CV completos los rinde durante solo 10 segundos. Para continuar, si quieres derrapar tendrías que ver la forma de desconectar la tracción delantera. Y te quedarías con solo 412 CV… los del motor trasero. Porque este coche es tracción total, pero con un motor por eje. Así que de nuevo seré generoso, un… ¡4! Para rodar en circuito: ¿Un coche con centro de gravedad alto y de casi 2,5 toneladas para rodar en circuito? Creedme, no es buena idea. Alguno me dirá que, pese a ser un SUV, como las baterías van abajo, el centro de gravedad no es tan alto. Pues no, porque el piso del coche ya va bastante alto comparado a una berlina o coupé. Con este coche en circuito machacarás los frenos, por aceleración y peso, y destruirás los neumáticos en pocas vueltas, por lo mismo. Y si consigues dar unas cuantas vueltas… lo mismo tienes que volver a casa en grúa, porque en este medio la autonomía cae en picado… Me siento generoso y, por la aceleración que podemos disfrutar en la recta, le voy a dar un… ¡2!... porque en el resto del circuito, naufraga. Llegamos al final del examen y la nota media es de… chan, chan, chan… 3,7 sobre 10. Honestamente, pensé que iba a ser peor. Pero si en la ecuación añades el precio que de tarifa es de 78.000 €… pues no sé qué decirte.

Der kroatische Designer, der in Frankfurt geboren wurde, kann auf eine neunjährige Karriere als leitender Designer innerhalb der BMW Group zurückblicken, wobei er zuletzt die Entwicklungen von BMW i und BMW M maßgeblich vorangetrieben hat.Dukecs Hauptaufgabe besteht darin, die Harmonie zwischen diesen drei Bereichen herzustellen und ein starkes Gesamtbild zu schaffen. Mit langjähriger Erfahrung in internationalen Designstudios trägt er diese Verantwortung bei BMW, wo er ein Team von über 100 Designern leitet. Stefano Mesa won his first MotoAmerica Supersport race of the year in race one at Pittsburgh International Race Complex a few weeks ago. The next day he followed up his victory with another podium finish - his sixth of the year - to end the weekend third in the championship and only 13 points out of second. This week the news broke that Mesa was foregoing the Supersport class after getting a once-in-a-lifetime chance to race a full-blown, race-winning BMW M 1000 R Superbike vacated by the injured Cameron Beaubier for the Tytlers Cycle Racing team. Mesa jumped at the chance and will race the BMW at next weekend's eighth round at Circuit of The Americas and a few weeks later in the season finale at New Jersey Motorsports Park. First, we discuss how Florida's Governor DeSantis has signed a bill blocking direct-to-consumer car sales. The bill, written by lobbyists for the Florida Automobile Dealers Association, restricts automakers' control over dealer inventory and prices. However, exceptions were negotiated for Tesla and other electric startups. Dealers argue that they play a crucial role in providing customer service and warranty work. Next, we shift our focus to Oregon, where the state has passed a bill allowing Oregonians to pump their own gas. While full-service fueling won't be eliminated, gas stations can designate up to half of their pumps as self-serve. Populous counties will still require at least one attendant, and gas prices will be the same for self-serve and full-service pumps. Moving on, we share an amusing story about Porsche CEO Oliver Blume camping in a rooftop tent on a 911 Turbo S during the Le Mans race. The tent, designed for various Porsche models, comes with comfortable amenities and bears the iconic Porsche branding. In another segment, we discuss the sighting of a road version of the Ford Mustang GT3, featuring a wide body and center-exit exhaust. Spy shots reveal design cues and tire sidewalls resembling Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 R tires. The car's front-end remains heavily camouflaged, hinting at aggressive aerodynamics. Lastly, we touch upon BMW M's transition away from manual and twin-clutch gearboxes. The twin-clutch gearbox won't make a comeback, and the recently launched M2 is expected to be the last manual M car. BMW M is favoring automatic transmissions for factors such as cost and comfort. We conclude with a look at Circuit Safaris, an exciting fan experience in Japan's World Endurance Championship and Atlanta Motorsports Park. Fans can enter a lottery for a chance to buy tickets and witness race cars up close. While the event presents risks, it has been deemed a success by the WEC and FIA.
