In this powerful conversation, host Eldra Jackson III sits down with Ian Manuel—activist, poet, and author—whose life was irrevocably changed after being sentenced to life in prison at age 13. Ian shares his remarkable journey from solitary confinement to the national stage, where his poetry and voice are transforming narratives about justice and healing. With raw vulnerability and grace, Ian recounts his friendship with the woman he harmed, the struggle to rebuild life after release, and how art helped him survive two decades in isolation. A moving exploration of restorative justice, resilience, and redemption. To learn more about Ian Manuel, you can follow him on Instagram at @ianmanuelofficial and on Twitter at @ianmanofficial. This is an absolute joy of a gig from John Paul Jones, who appeared at the Big Ears Music Festival in Knoxville, TN on March 22, 2024. He played all three days of the event. One night with Sons of Chipotle, one night solo (which is what I'm playing), and one night with Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth. Our boy gets around. I play a few tracks from his solo set, an isolated bass rendition of Ramble On (just a couple of minutes long), Since I've Been Loving You on the grand piano, an already legendary performance of Your Time is Gonna Come on a 1928 Wurlitzer organ, and a haunting, elegiac Down to the River to Pray, off of his solo album Zooma. This is a master class in virtuosity and humility. He's a genius and a very lovely man, who completely holds the torch for Led Zeppelin magick in this moment. Enjoy.

Back to Steve Rosen: In Part 1, Steve and I talked about the genesis of his friendship with Eddie Van Halen, Eddie's background as a kid immigrating from the Netherlands to America and his devotion to and respect for his father and brother, the idolatry Eddie's fans feel for him, and the seeds that eventually sprouted into Steve's book ‘Tonechaser'. In Part 2, get ready to learn more about Steve's complicated relationship with Eddie, including the dark turn it took in the early 2000s and how Eddie's 2020 death still haunts Steve. You'll also hear about Eddie's marriage to Valerie Bertinelli and his love for their son, Wolfgang. Finally, Steve shares juicy stories about his journalistic career beyond his work with Van Halen, such as his tumultuous experience interviewing John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin in 1977. Welcome back to another episode of Rock is Lit, the podcast where we dive into the powerful intersection of rock music, literature, and pop culture. Today, we're stepping outside the realm of fiction as we embark on a fascinating journey into the 1960s with acclaimed author Frye Gaillard and his nonfiction book ‘A Hard Rain: America in the 1960s', which captures the heartbeat of an era, an era that has inspired so many of the rock novels featured on the podcast. In Frye's extraordinary book he not only delves into the tragic and hopeful narratives of civil rights, black power, women's liberation, and the Vietnam War but also unveils the cultural manifestations of change. From the Brothers Kennedy to Janis Joplin, Johnny Cash to Bob Dylan, and everything in between, ‘A Hard Rain' introduces us to the influential figures who shaped this iconic American decade.
