To conclude our trilogy of interviews with prominent tech journalists to celebrate the upcoming twentieth anniversary of the DLD Conference, today's interview is with David Kirkpatrick, author of The Facebook Effect and founder of Techonomy Media. In contrast with Steven Levy and John Markoff, whose attitude toward Silicon Valley doesn't seem have dramatically changed, Kirkpatrick's thinking has undergone quite a radical shift over the last twenty years. As he acknowledges, he's been transformed from a Facebook believer into one of its most acute critics. And, in contrast with Levy and Markoff, Kirkpatrick's intellectual attention has also broadened, shifting from the internet to focusing on technological fixes for global warming.David Kirkpatrick is a longtime technology and business journalist, author and media entrepreneur, known for his work connecting technology developments to societal impact and progress. He is an expert on internet companies and social media, and is now focusing especially on climate tech and the climate economy. He is also known for moderating on-stage conversations with tech leaders. Kirkpatrick's bestselling 2010 book, The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company that is Connecting the World, was published in 32 languages, including Catalan and Vietnamese. It was a finalist for the Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year as well as the Gerald Loeb Award. In subsequent years, he has written extensively about the growing societal harms caused by Facebook/Meta and social media broadly. His articles include 2018's Facing Facebook's Failure for Techonomy, and earlier that same year, The Facebook Defect, in Time Magazine. In December 2023 he published Vinod Khosla Can See the Future: It Just Got Hazy for a Minute in The Information. Kirkpatrick founded and for 12 years led Techonomy Media, which hosted conferences on technology, innovation, business, and their connection to social progress. Techonomy's mission was to highlight ways technology could improve society and human lives. Among his numerous onstage interviews there were Mark Zuckerberg, Marc Benioff, John Chambers, Commerce Sec. Penny Pritzker, economist Jeffrey Sachs, Patrick Collison, DARPA Chief Arati Prabhakar, Sen. Cory Booker, Nandan Nilekani, and Sean Parker. He also has served as a moderator at Burda Media's DLD conference for 19 years, interviewing a wide range of leaders including Mark Zuckerberg. Kirkpatrick worked for Time Inc. for 30 years, mostly at Fortune Magazine, where he was for many years senior editor for internet and technology. Many years earlier, while serving as a copy clerk at Life Magazine, he served as unit chairperson of The Newspaper Guild at Time Inc. He founded and hosted Fortune's Brainstorm conference series beginning in 2001 and for six years wrote its Fast Forward column. At Brainstorm he hosted and interviewed Pres. Bill Clinton, Israeli Pres. Shimon Peres, Senator John McCain, and numerous technology and business CEOs. He was a formal participant and moderator at the World Economic Forum in Davos for 21 years, and for 13 years was a member of the Forum's International Media Council, consisting of 100 top global media leaders. He also served for many years as a contributing editor at Bloomberg Television. He is a recipient of the 2012 Silicon Valley Visionary Award, awarded alongside Elon Musk, Jim Breyer, and Sal Khan. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Last month, National Public Radio joined the growing fearmongering and dogpiling aimed at the Alliance Defending Freedom. The Fresh Air interview was hosted by Terry Gross and featured David Kirkpatrick, who authored an extensive expose about the religious freedom group in The New Yorker. The article and the interview painted ADF as being against women's rights and LGBTQ equality, as if there were no progressive push to curb the freedom of speech or to standardize mail-order chemical abortions or to mainstream radical gender ideology for second graders. In the article, Kirkpatrick sounded as alarmist as Terry Gross, implying that somehow ADF is part of the aggressive religious plot to take over America. In the interview, he was calm and thoughtful, reigning in her soft-spoken hysteria. In the end, it's a lesson in just how important our worldviews are. They make all the difference in what we see, what we conclude is wrong with the world, and how the world can be made better.
Steel manufacturing is important, but even more important is the safety of the workers in steel plants. In this episode, we embark on a riveting voyage through the digital age of worker safety in the steel industry…or even, every industry. Steel, joins host David Kirkpatrick to explore the distinctive challenges faced by not just steelworkers, but anyone working in high-risk environments, from extreme temperatures to toxic gases, and the dedicated efforts to ensure their safety.
The Alliance Defending Freedom is a Christian conservative legal group that has won 15 Supreme Court cases, including overturning Roe v. Wade. We talk with David Kirkpatrick, who wrote about the group in a New Yorker article titled "The Next Targets for the Group that Overturned Roe." Those next targets include further restricting or banning the abortion pill mifepristone, and limiting LGBTQ rights. We'll also talk about Kirkpatrick's recent interview with a senior political leader of Hamas.
Earlier this week, The New Yorker published an interview with a senior Hamas political official, Mousa Abu Marzouk, about the group's rationale behind the October 7th massacre in Israel. How did Hamas militants determine that now was the time for violence? And, given that Netanyahu's deadly response was a sure thing, how did they weigh the cost of Palestinian lives? (This podcast episode was recorded on Monday afternoon, and since then civilian deaths in Gaza have continued to rise as Israeli airstrikes bombard the strip.) The New Yorker reporters David Kirkpatrick and Adam Rasgon join Tyler Foggatt to discuss what they learned from speaking with Abu Marzouk, and how this conflict differs from what they have each seen in their many years of reporting on the region. Share your thoughts on The Political Scene.

This week I'm reading an extract from Richard Martini's book 'The Greatest Story Never Told: As Told by Jesus and Those Who Knew Him'.This book is recorded conversations (on film, via skype, zoom) with people who spontaneously claim to be “seeing” “hearing” or otherwise getting information from someone they identify as Jesus. Some claim to have “seen him before” “never seen him before” or “they don't believe in him” but are somehow accessing him. But the consistency of content is what drew me to the reports.I'm a writer/director of theatrical motion pictures. I've written and/or directed eight feature films, including “Limit Up” and “You Can't Hurry Love.” I've written 10 “best-selling books” (kindle in their genre) about the research of what people say under hypnosis about the afterlife, and recently books with the help of a medium talking directly to folks I knew no longer on the planet, (“Backstage Pass to the Flipside” 1, 2 and 3 with Jennifer Shaffer). I've written miniseries for HBO (“The De Medicis” – unproduced) and other film companies. I've written scripts for major film studios (including David Kirkpatrick, our trusty foreword fellow) worked on the feature films of Robert Towne (“Personal Best”) and Phillip Noyce (“Salt.”) It's not like I'm seeking this line of investigation… it literally fell into my lap. While filming people under hypnosis or not under hypnosis, “seeing” or “hearing” from Jesus started to become more frequent in the footage. At first it was disconcerting. People not under hypnosis saying “I'm seeing Jesus. I don't know why I'm seeing him because I don't believe in him!” Eventually I took the leap; “Well, can we ask him a question?”To my chagrin the answers “he gave” weaved a different story of his life. A story that had echoes of “The Life of St. Issa” as well as other tales of his “survival” from the crucifixion. These consistent yet contrary stories challenged my conception of who he was, challenged my ideas of what consciousness might be, and basically challenge my existence in more ways than one. I published a number of those interviews in “Hacking the Afterlife” but recently while writing “Architecture of the Afterlife” I've had more people claim he was “showing up.” And the more he showed up, the more stories he told about his path and journey that mirrored the previous ones. And finally, the author, former studio exec David Kirkpatrick suggested “letting him speak.”Needless to say, there's no way to prove they are his words or it's him speaking. However, what he says is consistent, what he says is contrary to the mythology of him. Allow me to say that again; every time he shows up, he recounts the same contrary story about his life, which is an alternate version of the “Greatest Story Ever Told.” When asked why he was interested in "telling an alternate version of his life" he's reportedly said on more than one occasion: "It's not alternate if it's true." In this book you'll hear a linear story about the alpha and omega as told by him and those who reportedly knew him.I've been reluctant to share this story for years; I offer these pages to help people make a DIRECT connection with him. He's not gone; he's just not here. I encourage everyone to ask him on their own.BioWriter/Director/Author Richard is an award winning filmmaker, who has written and/or directed 9 theatrical features, and a number of documentaries. His first book, "Flipside: A Tourist's Guide on How to Navigate the Afterlife" went to #1 twice at Amazon in all its genres. The book is based on transcripts of a documentary he made which is available at Amazon (Flipside: A Journey Into the Afterlife) and Gaia TV. His books "It's a Wonderful Afterlife" volumes one and two expands the research into the afterlife from Michael Newton's work, to include interviews with a number of scientists in the field of consciousness, including Dr. Bruce Greyson, Dr. Mario Beauregard, and Gary Schwartz Phd. He also examines near death experiences and compares their accounts to similar ones during between life sessions (the technique used by Michael Newton that allows people to access the between lives realm, or LBLs) and other examples (OBEs) where people may have lost their ability to think normally, but are having the same experiences. In "Hacking the Afterlife" he interviews mediums and explores "interviewing people no longer on the planet." As Gary Schwartz put it after reading "Flipside" “Inspiring, well written and entertaining. The kind of book where once you have read it, you will no longer be able to see the world in the same way again.”Amazon link http://rb.gy/gy5d0https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hacking-the-afterlife-podcast/id1505639009https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWhpYMjfbFfC0STNdWw_udwhttps://richmartini.blogspot.com/https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/pastlivespodcast
This week I'm talking to Richard Martini about his book 'The Greatest Story Never Told: As Told by Jesus and Those Who Knew Him'.This book is recorded conversations (on film, via skype, zoom) with people who spontaneously claim to be “seeing” “hearing” or otherwise getting information from someone they identify as Jesus. Some claim to have “seen him before” “never seen him before” or “they don't believe in him” but are somehow accessing him. People who report being disturbed by him “showing up” burst into tears, can't breathe, or in some cases are “dumbstruck” (literally can't speak) by seeing, hearing someone not there - while not under hypnosis or any imaginable consciousness altered reason. But the consistency of content is what drew me to the reports.People who've never considered his story, people who had a firm belief in what they thought was his story - reporting (consistently) an “alternate version of events.” People who “used to believe in religion” but no longer do, people who go to church weekly who claim to be startled at hearing something different than they've been told (“I always felt this to be the case, but I've never heard it before”). His story doesn't change, but the people who tell it do.That's why it's a story that has never been told.I'm a writer/director of theatrical motion pictures.

Another mind bending podcast. First an apology for talking over Jennifer; because I knew I didn't have her for long, I wanted to squeeze in as much information as I could. The first half I interrupt her often, the second half not so much. Yes, I did a Laverne & Shirley, I played "Guide the Pizza Delivery guy" - an idea that Charles Grodin had, that he pitched to Penny. They wrote me in and as noted, they cut me out. It's just fun that I did the show, and that Harry Dean Stanton sang a song (which went over, and is why I was cut out, according to Penny.) I did spend the millennium on a yacht with Bob Shaye, Penny Marshall and others - and I played the piano while Penny sang shows tunes from "Hello Dolly" but with Bob and Ava Shaye's names instead. And for those familiar with our books with transcripts of eight years of meeting weekly - "Backstage Pass to the Flipside 1, 2 and 3" or "Tuning into the Afterlife" - they'll know that Jennifer doesn't recall our conversations unless folks on the flipside remind her. We did interview Gary Marshall when he crossed over, we have interviewed others mentioned in the podcast, Robin Williams, Sally Kellerman... Luana Anders is our moderator on the podcast, she did over 300 TV episodes and films, knew everyone - and those in turn know others. We've had many stop by the podcast - not because they're "celebrities" - there's no hierarchy on the flipside, but because Luana knew them. (Luana reached out from the flipside to get me to do a documentary about this research.) I was at Penny's birthday party when I met Robin Williams. Luana introduced me to Fred Roos, introduced me to Francis Coppola who introduced me to George Lucas (I beat them both playing "Risk"). Rance Howard starred in my film "Limit Up" so I know Ron, as well as his mom. I don't know Bill Hudson, but I do know his ex Goldie. Apologies to her children for dropping their names in this podcast - I try not to offend grieving family members, but sometimes it's healing or helpful to hear or see how easy it is to access our loved ones. We do this podcast for that reason - to demonstrate one doesn't need a medium (it helps) doesn't need a hypnotherapist (it can help) but one can just do a simple meditation (example in DivineCouncils.com or the film HackingTheAfterlifeFilm.com ) to chat with anyone. Or give Jennifer a call. She's really good at what she does. As Harry Dean Stanton told us (transcript is in "Backstage Pass to the Flipside") "tell people to allow for the possibility there is an afterlife so then they won't waste another minute of their life arguing about it like I did." I mention David Kirkpatrick in the podcast, as he wrote a wonderful memory of Cindy on his Facebook page. Some may think I'm directing Jennifer in these questions - but since we've been doing this for eight years, I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone - for me that's a waste of time and energy when she's done that so many times already. Plus she works with law enforcement daily pro bono. I'm not the only one who knows how talented she is (JenniferShaffer.com) I don't know if Ron or George or Fred will ever see this podcast, but they're specifically mentioned in here. Our loved ones are NOT GONE. THEY'RE JUST NOT HERE. The data, research, footage from UVA Medical school DOPS demonstrates consciousness is not confined to the brain. It's not my opinion, theory or belief that people say the same things about the afterlife using hypnotherapy, meditation or in this case mediumship - it's footage. Examples are in flipsidemyfilm.com, "Talking to Bill Paxton" on Gaia, or HackingTheAfterlifeFilm.com . And to Bill Hudson - whom I don't know - Cindy says "you can have it." She says you'll know what that means. We hope so.

Since the 1970s, people have been using digital tech to share information and connect with others. As times changed and more people gained access to computers and the internet, social networking technology changed too. Now, social networking has been replaced with social media and networks with large corporate platforms. Despite the ubiquity of these platforms, some of their earliest employees are creating new decentralized, open-sourced networks in an effort to bring the humanity back to social media. As the big platforms face new challenges, the future of social media is still being written. Featuring Kevin Driscoll, Andrew Weinreich, Evan Henshaw-Plath, David Kirkpatrick and Tristan Harris.

Joining Foreword this week is Dr. David C. Kirkpatrick, Assistant Professor of Religion at James Madison University. David is a historian of religion, politics, and social movements working at the intersection of Latin America and the United States. He completed a PhD. at the University of Edinburgh's prestigious Centre for the Study of World Christianity, but not before passing his way through TEDS, earning an MDiv and MA in Intercultural Studies. Dr. Fellipe do Vale and Dr. Madison Pierce have a lovely conversation about David's work on Latin American Evangelicals and their contributions to understandings of how evangelicalism is defined.David's work focuses on 20th-century figures like René Padilla, Samuel Escobar, and Orlando Costas, evangelical theologians who called for a holistic understanding of the gospel that extended to concern for the poor as a corrective to approaches that neglected such dimensions. They trained alongside and in conversation with familiar figures like John Stott and Carl F.H. Henry, yet often speaking from convictions forged in their own Latin American contexts. There is something noticeably distinct about these figures; while they are recognizably evangelical in their doctrinal commitments, they also differed strongly from their North American conversation partners on social issues, even whether Christians ought to engage them, and David brings out these differences well. This, of course, is a fundamental question about what the gospel is and its relationship to every element of life, and the answer of these evangelicals is illuminating for the contemporary concerns of many Christians. Finally, David shares about his rewarding experiences teaching in a research university as a Christian.Along the way, listeners will discover…What makes the state of Wisconsin so wonderfulWhat Madison was like as a seminary classmateWhich TEDS professors had the biggest impact on David in shaping his studiesTo learn more about Dr. David C. Kirkpatrick, we encourage you to check out his book, and keep an eye out for his two other forthcoming books, Global Visions of Violence: Agency and Persecution in World Christianity and Blood and Borders: Violence and Intolerance at the Intersection of Latin America and the United States.
