In "Babylon's Cross-Hairs", Host Henry K takes a close look the history of reggae music and its intertwined relationship with Jamaica's sociopolitical landscape, focusing on the iconic One Love Peace Concert. Henry K recounts his experiences at Tuff Gong Records, where the essence of reggae was not merely a genre but a movement that encapsulated the struggles and aspirations of a nation. This episode takes a look at historical significance of the One Love Peace Concert held in April 1978, a pivotal moment that exemplified the unification of a fractured Jamaica during a time of political turmoil. We explore the contrasting artistic and ideological expressions of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, two luminaries of reggae music, whose relationship was marked by both collaboration and rivalry. The concert not only showcased Marley's vision of unity but also highlighted Tosh's unyielding commitment to speaking truth to power, as evidenced by his pointed criticisms of the political establishment during the performance...A show that would have severe repercussions for Tosh. Elliott Gould returns to SNL for the 4th time to handle the hosting duties for S4's Christmas episode. He brings with him Peter Tosh as musical guest (who, in turn, brings along a very famous friend) as well as comedy legends Bob and Ray as special guests showing everyone just how it is done.Gould keeps the show's good vibe going heading into the holiday season hiatus. It is a solid outing as we are treated to some great Christmas themed sketches (including an excellent St. Mickey's Knights of Columbus), the introduction of some new recurring characters, and of course…a song and dance number for his monologue (this time w/ Garrett). ---------------------------------Subscribe today!Follow us on social media: X (Twitter): NR4PTProjectBluesky: nr4ptproject.bsky.socialInstagram: nr4ptprojectFacebook: The Not Ready for Prime Time ProjectContact Us: Website: https://www.nr4project.comEmail: nr4ptproject@gmail.com

On Episode 4 "Good Cop, Bad Cop" Host Henry K takes a close look at the harrowing events surrounding the assassination of Ludlow Campbell, a key witness against corrupt police officers in Jamaica. The episode reveals the chilling connections between Campbell's murder and the earlier assassination of reggae icon Peter Tosh, suggesting a systemic pattern of violence perpetrated by those sworn to protect the public. Through firsthand accounts and meticulous investigation, the narrative uncovers the involvement of police officers in orchestrating these heinous acts, thereby highlighting the pervasive corruption within the Jamaican law enforcement system. As the story unfolds, we are compelled to confront the unsettling implications of a justice system that allows such brutality to flourish unchecked and the Uphill Battle faced by the "Good Cops" fighting wars on two fronts. On "The Getaway Driver" Host Henry K updates the narrative surrounding the individual known as Dennis Lobban, infamously referred to as Leppo, as he explores the hauntingly intricate web of conflicting stories that have emerged since his purported death in 2018. Within the broader context of Jamaica's tumultuous history, Henry K then focuses on the legacy of the late Sybil Hibbert, a pioneering journalist who chronicled the country's underworld with a deftness that transcended mere reporting. Her work not only captured the pulse of Jamaica during its formative years but also intertwined personal narratives with larger societal issues, thereby enriching the discourse surrounding crime and justice. Henry K reflects on how Hibbert's unique perspective as both a journalist and the spouse of Isadore Dick Hibbert, the lead investigator in the notorious murder of Peter Tosh, imbued her reporting with an unparalleled depth. Finally, examination of Steve Russell, the alleged getaway driver, adds another layer of complexity to the investigation, as Henry K argues that the true story behind Tosh's murder has been obscured by a labyrinth of deceit, misinformation, and sensationalism, leaving a legacy fraught with questions that remain unanswered. In yet another request from our listeners for topics you wanted to hear, for Episode 88, you can include me as someone whose been interested in hearing an episode about the Kodak Retina and other German Kodaks. For many years, whenever I needed to write something about the Retina, the person I always reached out to was Dr. David Jentz. David is not only the founder of the Historical Society for Retina Cameras, but also has published multiple written works about the Retina and its history. In addition to his knowledge about the Retina, David frequently collaborates with historian Klaus Schicht who has studied the man who created the Retina, Dr. August Nagel. Although Klaus does not appear on the show, David was able to quote some information regarding topics we discussed on this show. If one Kodak historian was not enough, we also invited Todd Gustavson from the George Eastman Museum to be on the show to fill in the blanks for any other Kodak related questions which came up. This was a closed episode, so we did not have any callers, and both Paul and Theo weren't able to make it, but what we lacked in callers, we more than made up for in fascinating Kodak, Nagel, and Retina history. Listen to Episode 87 to get a background on who Dr. August Nagel was, how he became a doctor, brief histories of his time working for Contessa Nettel, Zeiss-Ikon, and Nagel Kamerwerke prior to joining Kodak. Did you know that before Kodak AG made cameras, they made film in Germany? We discuss other German Kodaks such as the Recomar, Pupille, Kodak Duo Six-20, and the mysterious Kodak Regent. We get into the differences between the use of "Nr." and "Type" when referring to prewar and postwar cameras, and finally solve the mystery of Paul's Retinette Angenieux lens. In addition to camera history, we also take a deep dive into Kodak's introduction to making 35mm film. While Kodak's type 135 daylight loading cassette was their most notable contribution to 35mm film in the 1930s, did you know they made 35mm film for the Leica and Contax before that? David shares with us information about Kodaks original 35mm film, along with some detailed patent information about the Retina, and much more! As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. For our next episode, we are getting on a boat and heading on a "Three Hour Tour" for our second Desert Island episode. If you were stranded on a desert island with only three cameras, which three would they be? Will a high spec but fragile electronic camera make the cut, or will people choose less technically impressive models built to withstand a lot more abuse? Let us know what you'd choose! On Episode 2 of "Wanted: Dread or Alive" The narrative surrounding the murder of reggae icon Peter Tosh is revealed, focusing on the Supreme Court's ruling regarding the appeal of Dennis "Leppo" Lobban, the only individual convicted in this notorious crime. This case is emblematic of the broader societal issues in Jamaica, where power dynamics intertwine with music, politics, and street justice, revealing a landscape where the official accounts often mask deeper truths. Host Henry K highlights Lobban's perplexing defense during his trial, which raised questions about his motives and mental state, suggesting a deliberate misdirection rather than a genuine attempt to establish innocence. Further, the episode probes into the eerie circumstances of the night Tosh was killed, drawing attention to the inconsistencies in witness testimonies and the chilling implications of a robbery that may have been a façade for a targeted assassination. Steve ‘Duck' McLane was one of the original members and composers of The Blue Riddim Band. His early exposure to reggae music led him to frequent visits to Jamaica during the 1970s where he built relationships with local band Soul Syndicate. Later on they were the opening act for the likes of Dennis Brown, Big Youth, Burning Spear, Peter Tosh and Bob Marley when they toured the United States. They went to Jamaica in 1981 where they recorded for the legendary King Jammys. In 1982 they became the first reggae band from the United States to play the now defunct annual Sunsplash music festival. They played again at the same festival the following year.

So you'd like to know if any of the Wailers played with Bob Marley? What happened to the Wailers after Bob's death? How many songs did the group have? And what was Bob Marley's biggest hit? We answer all of these questions and more in this episode. Bob Marley was born in 1945, in Saint Ann, Jamaica. His father was a Jamaican of English descent. His mother was a black teenager. Bob started his career with the Wailers, a group he formed with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston in 1963. Marley married Rita Marley in 1966, and it was she who introduced him to Rastafarianism. By '69 Bob, Tosh and Livingston had fully embraced Rastafarianism, which greatly influenced not only Marley's music but reggae music in general. It didn't take long for Bob Marley's music to come to the attention of Chris Blackwell, the owner of Island Records. Chris immediately signed the Wailers and produced their first album, "Catch a Fire". This was followed by "Burnin'", featuring tracks as "Get Up Stand Up" and "I Shot the Sheriff." Eric Clapton's cover of that song reached #1 in the US. In 1974 Tosh and Livingston left the Wailers to start solo careers. Marley later formed the band "Bob Marley and the Wailers", with his wife Rita as one of three backup singers called the I-Trees. This period saw the release of some groundbreaking albums, such as "Natty Dread" and "Rastaman Vibration".In 1976, during a period of spiraling political violence in Jamaica, an attempt was made on Marley's life. Marley left for England, where he lived in self-exile for two years. In England "Exodus" was produced, and it remained on the British charts for 56 straight weeks. This was followed by another successful album, "Kaya." These successes introduced reggae music to the western world for the first time, and established the beginning of Marley's international status. In 1977 Marley consulted with a doctor when a wound in his big toe would not heal. More tests revealed malignant melanoma. He refused to have his toe amputated as his doctors recommended, claiming it contradicted his Rastafarian beliefs. Others, however, claim that the main reason behind his refusal was the possible negative impact on his dancing skills. The cancer was kept secret from the general public while Bob continued working.Returning to Jamaica in 78, he continued work and released "Survival" in 1979 which was followed by a successful European tour. In 1980 he was the only foreign artist to participated in the independence ceremony of Zimbabwe. It was a time of great success for Marley, and he started an American tour to reach blacks in the US. He played two shows at Madison Square Garden, but collapsed while jogging in NYC's Central Park in 1980. The cancer diagnosed earlier had spread to his brain, lungs and stomach. Bob Marley died in a Miami hospital on May 11, 1981. He was 36 years old. This week we are joined by one of the original Wailers, Al Anderson - an American guitarist who became Bob's closest and most trusted friend. Bob had asked Al to make sure that his beloved music transcended his death and Al has obliged him all these years. Today, Al Anderson leads the group called The Original Wailers and their constant touring ensures that audiences everywhere still know and enjoy the incredible music of Bob Marley. For more information about Bob and the Wailers head to the website https://www.bobmarley.com/ I really hope you enjoy the story of Reggae's founder - Bob Marley. If there's someone you'd like to hear interviewed, please send me a message through my website
Day 4 of Black History Bootcamp: Ratchet or Respectable? Today, we dive into the powerful, unapologetic legacies of Harry Belafonte & Peter Tosh. These icons challenged norms and demanded respect, embodying both resistance and resilience. Belafonte used his art and voice as a force for civil rights, while Tosh's raw, fearless reggae was a call to justice and liberation. Are we bound by what's ‘respectable'—or can we embrace all parts of ourselves, even the ones that disrupt? Tap into today's episode and decide: Which side of the line speaks to you today—ratchet or respectable?

We are so stoked this week to have Mark Karan, a living legend, on No Simple Road this week! Mark Karan is best known for performing with the extended Grateful Dead family. He has anchored the lead guitar slot in Bob Weir & RatDog, playing hundreds of shows to thousands of fans year-round. Before crossing over into the land of the Dead, Mark worked his guitar and vocal voodoo for the likes of Dave Mason, Delaney Bramlett, the Rembrandts, Paul Carrack, Huey Lewis, Jesse Colin Young and Sophie B. Hawkins. Mark also tours with an array of amazing musicians in his own “Mark Karan's Buds”, where his soulful blues-based vocal stylings and inspired guitar work meld with the remarkably creative and responsive playing of his friends in a passionate delivery of the psychedelicized sounds of Americana. This is where rock meets R&B and country and mixes with the soul of New Orleans… with healthy portions of reggae, folk, funk and whatever else the muse might bring. In addition to his originals, as well as those of songwriter friends, Mark covers a range of eclectic songs from Johnny “Guitar” Watson's “You Can Stay (But the Noize Must Go)” and Peter Tosh's “Don't Look Back”, to the Kinks' “Lazin' on a Sunny Afternoon” or Joe Jackson's “Fools in Love” — his unique musical taste and song choices are the hallmark of these shows, and always crowd pleasers for his nationwide, loyal fanbase. As a reggae revolutionary who rejected peace in the name of truth and justice, and an outspoken critic of the Jamaican government, Peter Tosh's refusal to compromise nearly cost him his life many times over. He tried to amplify his message by purchasing Jamaica's Radio One. He tried to protect himself by way of African bush doctors and medicine men. He spent years knowing there was a bullet out there with his name on it. And in 1987, when Peter Tosh was 42, that bullet found him. Murdered in his own home by someone he knew. But why? Revenge? Wounded pride? Or was it murder for hire? Who really silenced the great Peter Tosh? To see the full list of contributors, see the show notes at www.disgracelandpod.com. This week in the After Party, Jake talks this week's DISGRACELAND episode on Peter Tosh, the history of DISGRACELAND two-parters, and pulls back the curtain to discuss the research and sources that go into bringing these stories to life. Peter Tosh was a reggae subversive who used his music as a means to fight corruption, oppression, and hypocrisy. Unlike his one-time bandmate Bob Marley, Tosh didn't fight for peace. He fought for truth–and justice. He did this with a guitar shaped like an M-16 automatic rifle. He lobbied for the legalization of marijuana, using the profits of the drug trade to get his message onto the most iconic album of his career. All of this put Peter Tosh in the crosshairs of authority, the government, and those who wished to silence him – some who even wanted to see him dead.
