Guitarist and Songwriter Mike Baggetta came across Mike Watt's 1997 punk rock opera 'Contemplating The Engine Room' at just the right time for him. Watt's expansive and highly personal song cycle that uses navy life as an extended metaphor for both his family history and his band, the Minutemen - created with guitarist Nels Cline and drummer Stephen Hodges - became a touchstone of sorts for Baggetta, opening his mind to the possibility of making highly original, authentic music independent of genre. Songs featured in this episode: Pedro Bound! - Mike Watt (Live at Jillian's, Long Beach CA Feb 1998); Everywhen We Go - Mike Baggetta / Jim Keltner / Mike Watt; Boilin' Blazes - Mike Watt; Brave Captain - fIREHOSE; June 16th - Minutemen; Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - Jeff Beck; What's So Funny 'Bout Social Justice - mssv; In The Engine Room, Red Bluff - Mike Watt; Prove It - Television; The Bluejacket's Manual, Pedro Bound!, The Boilerman, Black Gang Coffee, The Boilerman (Live at Jillian's, Long Beach CA), Topsiders - Mike Watt; Reoccurring Dreams - Husker Du; Lake Of Fire - Nirvana (Meat Puppets cover, MTV Unplugged); Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth - Minutemen; Scentless Apprentice - Nirvana; John Coltrane - Ogunde (Live); No One Says Old Man (To The Old Man) - Mike Watt; No One Says Old Man (To The Old Man) - mssv (Live); Fireman Hurley, Liberty Calls! - Mike Watt; What Means Solid Traveller - David Torn; In The Bunk Room/Navy Wife, Crossing The Equator, Breaking The Choke Hold, Wrapped Around The Screw, Shore Duty - Mike Watt; Hallucinating Reality - Dumbass Youth
When John Cahill graduated from high school, college was not an option for him. He knew that meant he would soon be drafted. So he decided to enlist, and his U.S. Army veteran father convinced him to join the Navy. Cahill was soon disappointed that all of his preferred assignments were rejected. He would be working as a bolilerman aboard the destroyer USS Buck.In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Cahill offers an unvarnished and entertaining look at his time aboard the Buck, from the painful initiation rituals to the duties of the boilermen. He also tells what it was like when the big guns were blazing off his own ship and nearby battleshipa dn the larger mission the Buck had in the waters off Vietnam.

Ace bassist Mike started with punk legends MINUTEMEN in the early '80s, broke into the majors with fireHOSE going into the '90s, and was so beloved by the alternative music scene that his first solo album in '94 was star-studded, with Eddie Vedder and Dave Grohl in the supporting tour. Mike has released three concept albums over the years and has collaborated on dozes of projects as well as backing Iggy Pop in the reformed Stooges. We discuss "Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs" by Minutemen from What Makes a Man Start Fires (1983), "The Boilerman" from Contemplating the Engine Room (1997), the first, second, and last sections from Hyphenated-Man (2011), and "I Got Marty Feldman Eyes" from the Big Walnuts Yonder self-titled album (2017). We conclude by listening to "Yeah, We’re Gonna Learn to Fall" by Jumpstarted Plowhards from Round One (2019) featuring Todd Congelliere. The new Premier League season is almost here, and new seasons have kicked off all over the place. The pie-eaters of Wigan have a new mascot, but could Crusty be the one to take on the mighty Boilerman? And could this mean there will be new mascots at Spurs, Chelsea and Man City? There are lots of new rules but is it also time to ditch the referees' whistle? Plus has Pep Guardiola found a way to get even more points out of his treble champions? On The Left Side is written by Ant McGinley and Jim Salveson, and this episode was produced by them in London and Manchester. Thanks to Damien St John for lending his voice and new signings Gareth John and Danny Tennyson provide the Harmonica bits. The theme music is written and performed by Katalina Kicks and appears with their kind permission. Follow us on twitter @ontheleftside and instagram @ontheleftsidepod
