Merry Christmas to all of you! Thank you so much for making it possible for me to do this for the past three years (already)! Welcome back to the lockdown with Decomposed Radio! For show 078 we're again solidifying that link between the UK climbing scene and quality techno, which I'm sure we all need plenty of at the moment during these wild times! Featuring this time round is top British climber Jim Pope, who as well as being at the top of his game out on rock also has a hefty talent for selecting and mixing techno. He's put together a stand out blend of superb and really interesting cuts, with a couple of inspired additions that the hardcore grit trad climbing enthusiasts among you should definitely recognise! Whilst we're on that subject, if that's your bag then you should definitely check out Jim's new film "Big Balls and Highballs" which is a mega throwback to the all killer, no filler grit flicks of old, which basically translates as a load of westies getting fully amongst it on some spicy gritstone chop routes! All set to a waddage deep techno soundtrack! So go and give this legend of a young man a follow on social media, and lock yourselves down for 45 minutes of dreamy techno from Jim Pope, in the mix for Decomposed Radio show #088.........Get some!!
The Climbing Magazine staff discuss the first ascent of Too Tall to Fall (V10) on the 55-foot-tall Grandma Peabody Boulder in Bishop's Buttermilks. The problem, which was done by Canadian Miles Adamson, is the first line that's been bouldered on the bloc's slab face. The Climbing staff talk about the safety tactics employed by climbers like Adamson on such huge problems, and try to find the line that separates high balls from free solos. Also, another game of Guess That Gram.
In June of 2019, Dan & Lisa met in Japan after being apart for about 10 months. Lisa had taken the opportunity to work as a teacher in China after her shelf began to break in order to contemplate the act of removing herself from the church. Before she came back, she wanted to spend time with the only person she knew who truly understood the struggle and they arranged to spend time in Japan before she returned home. They recap their experience in Tokyo, Kyoto & Fukuoka; and express their love for the culture, food, temples, vending machines, metro system, musical toilets, Highballs, and the unusual quiet. Also, they walked their asses off. Following that, they present a candid conversation recorded on the last night in Japan, just after deciding to produce this podcast. They discuss eternal progression, testimonies, faith before reason, seer stones (magic rocks), and burning garments (Mormon underwear). --- Website: siblingsinzion.com Facebook: facebook.com/siblingsinzion Instagram: instagram.com/siblingsinzion Twitter: twitter.com/siblingsinzion YouTube: tiny.cc/sizyoutube
Hayman’s Gin are launching an innovative new expression called Small Gin. A full strength gin with stronger botanical flavours, Small Gin has been designed to reduce the amount of spirit required to make a Gin & Tonic. The expression is said to be so rich in botanical character that only 5mls is need to create a perfectly balenced G&T, which in theory reduces alcohol consumption by 80%.With many consumers actively looking to reduce their alcohol consumption but keen to still enjoy the classic gin flavour, Hayman's have sought to create a new catagory within the thriving Gin market. With it's release scheduled for early August,we talk to James Hayman from Hayman's Gin about how Small Gin was created, how it tastes and, of course, how this new style of Gin should be used in Highballs and other Gin cocktails.

Sipsmith Gin master distiller Jared Brown joins me in this Season Two finale episode. But we're not talking about Sipsmith this time (see S1E2 for that!) , because Jared has another, far more interesting title, that of cocktail historian. With his wife Anistatia Miller, Jared has written more than 30 books on drinks, bars and cocktails. He's an absolute encyclopaedia on these topics and a fascinating fellow to chat to, so settle in for a great interview. As mentioned, this is the last episode of season two. One of the most popular drinks in craft cocktail bars at the moment is the simplest: the Highball. Generally, it’s a refreshing mix of whiskey and club soda, which is delicious on a hot afternoon. While many bartenders and drinkers discovered their love of the bubbly concoction in Tokyo bars where Highballs are a downright sensation, their history is much longer and they can actually be made from a variety of ingredients. On this episode of the award-winning podcast Life Behind Bars, co-hosts David Wondrich and Noah Rothbaum discuss the roots of the Highball and try to figure out which drinks can be included in the category. (Is a Rum & Coke a Highball? How about a Paloma or a Jack & Coke?) So fix yourself a highball and listen to this episode of Life Behind Bars. Cheers! Life Behind Bars features Half Full’s editor Noah Rothbaumand its Senior Drinks Columnist David Wondrichas they discuss the greatest bartenders and greatest cocktails of all time. It won the 2018 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Award for the world’s best drinks podcast. Edited by Alex Skjong See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

How does an Oscar-winning, major sports network look at content creation and battle changing consumer priorities? Adam Neuhaus, Director of Development for ESPN Films and Original Content, discusses going from pitching ideas to hearing pitches, the nature of content through the lens of filmmakers, why ESPN took a revolutionary strategy and won, why story is first and sport is second, the need to take risks, and great ideas always win over whatever format in which they are presented. He joins hosts Natasha Cholerton Brown (COO of Clippn), Ritesh Gupta (Head of Content for Vayner Productions), and Michael Villasenor (Executive Creative Director of Product Design Experience for Hearst). Why the demand for quality storytelling has led to a rise in true crime and multi-part documentaries The explosion of content in recent years, and how that is likely to continue with Disney and Apple entering the video streaming service marketplace The role of gatekeepers of media, and the importance of curation and honing a brand The importance of the directorial “POV” voice in media, and how that directorial focus has been utilized by ESPN with 30 For 30 to let filmmakers tell the stories they want to tell How that unique and unpredictable element drives engagement from viewers and builds a following The importance of relationships in how Adam and ESPN Films’ approach to working with directors and documentary projects How ESPN Films initiates projects, from pitches being sent in to Adam and his team looking for people who have stories they want to tell Some of Adam’s favorite projects he’s worked on What Adam is doing to widen the aperture of ESPN Films’ scope to encompass athleticism, adventure, and competition in general, and not limited to strictly “sports” The “target goal” for ESPN Films, and how programming like 30 For 30 has broken beyond content made only for sports fans Adam brings in some nondairy allergen-friendly ice cream Adam’s career trajectory, from working at small production companies, to working at IFP, to the William Morris Agency (now WME), and Paradigm as he shifted gears from working with agencies towards working as a creative Why film is so important to Adam Adam’s path towards being a media developer, from being an assistant to a producer The importance of doing what it is you want to do, even if it’s starting on a small scale, as you play the long game towards the position you want Headsets and Highballs, the networking group Adam started back when he was working as an assistant, and how it has grown over the years Cord cutting, and how ESPN has reacted to this by embracing streaming and taking part in other network bundles, along with forward-thinking business ventures The new opportunities that streaming platforms provide to ESPN that would be impossible on a broadcast schedule Adam’s work at Radical Media and Original Media, working on indie films, branded content, YouTube channels, and reality TV, which prepared him to work at ESPN Films How Adam’s work in various areas of media has shaped the enthusiastic, honest, and respectful approach he brings to his job now Adam breaks down what makes (or breaks) a successful pitch that lands on his desk Plus, we get to know a little more about Adam, his career goals, his love for basketball, and how according to his 3rd grade report card, he hasn’t changed all that much!
Drinking is such a big part of Japanese life. People drink to build relationships with colleagues and business clients, and of course to relieve stress or relax. Many people, especially businessmen, take full advantage of these drinking opportunities often ending the evening with a pavement pizza, and passing out on the streets. We see it all the time!Conversation highlights:What our podcasters like to drink during a night out on the town.the growing popularity of craft beer in Japan.Do people drink Sake/nihonshuu at the beginning of a night out?Work parties in Japan being a big part of business culture. “nomunication” - drink and communicate. What are some unique customs when drinking with colleagues and friends? Why drinking with co-workers and clients is important in Japan. The infamous Nomihodai (All-you-can-drink) plans and why they work in Japan. Are Japanese people strong drinkers?Drunken businessmen getting wasted and passing out on the streets and subways.Comparing alcohol related violences between Japan, the US and the UK. Alcohol making Japanese people more friendly and open. The best time of the year for our podcasters - The Sapporo Beer Garden in the summer.Jingiskan - A very popular dish of barbecued lamb originating from Hokkaido.Types of Shochu, which is a strong potato based spirit.Cocktails unique to Japan and the growing popularity of Highballs.Japan is so safe that businessmen feel comfortable passing out in the streets, and women walk alone through parks. The most unique drinking custom is the Nomihodai (all-you-can-drink plan), which sounds pretty crazy and would never work in countries such as the UK and the US, but the Japanese don’t take advantage of this. When our podcasters first arrived in Japan, hearing about this drinking plan brought shock and excitement, resulting in many an early night of debauchery and blackouts. Throughout the years, the Nomihodai is still a firm favourite on nights out, but the drink-as-much-as-you-can mentality has slowly worn off. Nowadays, as the guys have aged, so have their drinking habits, having a preference for sipping good quality Sake or a couple of glasses of tasty craft beer over dribbling into empty shot glasses in the dingy nightclubs of Sapporo at 4am. Date: July 9th, 2015 About Kevin Jorgeson After the Dawn Wall, Kevin Jorgeson needs no introduction really. Even my grandmother knows his name (and I'm not joking about that). Before the Dawn Wall, I knew Kevin for his highball bouldering; I knew him as a bold, strong-headed climber. After his send of Ambrosia (55-ft V11 in Bishop), he wanted something different to challenge him, so he called up Tommy Caldwell and asked him if he needed a partner for the Dawn Wall. What We Talked About In this conversation, Kevin tells me his own Dawn Wall story, how he fought through the challenges and ultimately succeeded, how he trained for it, and what's next. Which key pieces fell into place to let him send the Dawn Wall The media blow-up about the Dawn Wall How he skipped 14b & c and jumped to sending 14d Why pitch 15 was so hard for him How he dealt with the immense pressure up there Specific training he did for the Dawn Wall Why he switched from highballing to bigwalling Related Links Kevin Jorgeson's website: KevinJorgeson.com Kevin climbing Ambrosia Kevin climbing pitch 15 Training Programs for You Check out the new Route Climbing Training Program for route climbers of all abilities. Unquestionably the most fun we've had with a podcast thus far. Perhaps not coincidentally, it's also the drunkest Greg has been. Unfortunately, both the fun and Greg's boisterous inebriation highlight the fact that we need to purchase decent microphones and processing/editing software. 2015 is just around the corner and with it the prospects of a few spare shekels and a couple of sexy mics!* (*Update: We're super close on the sexy mic front. Also thinking about a sound board and other goodies. Very, very close.) The highballs (...our version for this podcast included: 1 part Gentleman Jack Tennessee Whiskey, 2 parts Fever Tree ginger beer, fresh-squeezed lemon, liberal ice...) were flowing perpetually, like the coffee flowed the morning after, and Greg's laugh traveled the entire spectrum from giggle through guffaw and eventually hyperventilating cackles. (Again, we apologize for the audio...particularly Greg and his maniacal laughter. Jen has it down pat.) On this episode of the d2d podcast, we discuss a story from the News of the Weird titled, "Dying to Get a Date," which prompted Greg to scan the internet further and find, "20 Ridiculously Specific Dating Sites that Actually Exist." From clowns to mullet enthusiasts, adult baby fetishists to the Amish...there is no reason why anyone can't find someone to love. We present to you, "Highballs and the Low-lights of Internet Dating."
