A Martian lands on Earth, heads to the nearest university's History Department, and asks the question, “What is Asia?” What kind of response would they get? We explore this question with historian Nile Green, who outlines a forum titled “Big Asia: Rethinking a Region” that appears in the June 2025 issue of the AHR.
I have been amused that 200-mile races have become a thing, and some now even call 100-milers a “speed event.” But now Destination Races, which hosts a series of 200-mile races has created the Arizona Monster 300 with a cutoff of 170 hours, or just more than 7 days. Good friend of the WASP Kelly Thrush ran its inaugural edition a few weeks ago. You might remember Kelly from WASP episodes #231 and 232 in November, 2022 after he completed 85 miles at the AHR following receiving a liver transplant. That two-part episode is definitely worth a re-listen as he described years of alcohol abuse that led to not only the deterioration of his liver, but alienating most of his family and friends, and put him on the doorstep of death. He awoke from surgery feeling immense gratitude, which has driven his life since then, including the founding of the Gratitude and Grace Foundation, which helps other transplant candidates and recipients navigate the financial hurdles they face. Kelly has created events to support this important mission, including an event that involves climbing laps up and down Mount Tumamoc in Tucson. In this fascinating chat, Kelly describes all aspects of taking on the enormous challenge of the Arizona Monster 300 and what it's like to be out there on the trail day and night for 7 days, how his wife and crew contributed to his finish, his fueling, sleeping, mental approach, hallucinating, and what it did to his feet. Fifty years after the fall of Saigon in April 1975, we investigate the challenges and opportunities of teaching the Vietnam War and the ways that understanding the war has changed. We speak with four contributors to an AHR forum entitled “The Vietnam War Fifty Years On,” published in the March 2025 issue—Thy Phu, David Biggs, Wen-Qing Ngoei, and Jana Lipman. And we pay a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
In this episode of Derms and Conditions, Dr James Q. Del Rosso welcomes back his longtime friend and pediatric dermatology expert, Dr Lisa Swanson. Together, they explore the rapidly evolving treatment landscape for pediatric atopic dermatitis, with a focus on newly approved non-steroidal topical therapies. Dr Swanson shares her insights on tapinarof 1% cream, now FDA-approved for patients as young as two years old, and topical roflumilast 0.15% cream, approved down to age six. The duo discusses how aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) agonism makes tapinarof effective in both atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, likening its action to a “SNOO” that adjusts to soothe inflammation. They also dive into data from the ADORING 1 and ADORING 2 phase 3 trials, highlighting tapinarof's rapid reduction in itch and its positive impact on sleep—critical outcomes for both children and their parents. Dr Swanson offers real-world anecdotes about the sleep-depriving toll of pediatric eczema and how effective therapies can restore rest for the entire family. The conversation touches on skin of color considerations, including how atopic dermatitis may present differently and why diverse representation in clinical trials is essential. Dr Swanson underscores the importance of tactile assessments and shares practical pearls for evaluating eczema severity across skin types. Finally, they explore safety and tolerability, emphasizing tapinarof's low risk of systemic absorption, even in young children prone to thumb-sucking or hand-to-mouth behavior. Tune in for clinical pearls, new treatment insights, and a few laughs between two dermatology BFFs.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 27, 2025 is: archetype AHR-kih-type noun Archetype refers to someone or something that is seen to be a perfect example. It is also a word for the original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies. // The college's most popular philosophy professor is the archetype of the preoccupied academic, complete with the messy desk, disheveled hair, and brilliant theories. // The film is considered a sci-fi archetype for its pioneering use of special effects and prosthetics to depict an alien world. See the entry > Examples: “One of the most notable features of folktales, fairy tales, myths, and legends are their simplicity. These stories, many of them passed down to us across generations, are compelling because of the recognizable archetypes they incorporate (the evil stepmother, the dutiful daughter, the greedy king, etc.), their straightforward moral arcs, and their use of magic and transformation as catalysts for the plot.” — Gina Chung, LitHub.com, 13 Mar. 2024 Did you know? In her 2024 book Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World, author Naomi Klein writes that “the doppelganger archetype has appeared across time to explore issues of life and death, the body versus the soul, the ego versus the id …” Klein doesn't mean that the same double, evil twin, or changeling keeps popping up throughout history, of course, but that the original concept of a doppelganger has served as a pattern, model, or template for writers to use in different ways, each supplying it with their own imagined details. Archetype's origins are in two Greek words: the verb archein, meaning “to begin,” and the noun typos, meaning “type.” Since its debut in English in the mid-1500s, archetype has taken on uses specific to the ideas of Plato, John Locke, and Carl Jung, but in everyday prose, archetype is most commonly used to mean “a perfect example,” as in “Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is considered an archetype of doppelganger fiction.”

In this insightful discussion at AHR 2025 in Orlando, Bryan connects with Nikki Krueger from Santa Fe dehumidifiers, exploring the evolution and importance of whole-house dehumidification in modern HVAC systems. Nikki, who has spent 20 years in the indoor air quality industry, shares her journey from a public relations background to becoming deeply involved in the technical and engineering aspects of dehumidification technology. She highlights the groundbreaking work of Ken Gehring, who invented whole-house ventilating dehumidifiers in the mid-1990s and continues to be actively involved in the industry at 84 years old. The conversation delves into the changing landscape of home construction and its impact on dehumidification needs. As houses become tighter due to building codes and energy efficiency requirements, the relationship between air conditioning and dehumidification has become more complex. They discuss how modern, high-efficiency AC systems often struggle with effective dehumidification due to their focus on temperature control and energy efficiency. This challenge is particularly evident in cases where AC units have higher sensible heat ratios, meaning they're better at changing temperature than removing moisture. A significant portion of the discussion focuses on the technical aspects of sizing and installing dehumidifiers correctly. Nikki emphasizes the importance of understanding true dehumidifier capacity under different conditions, noting that a unit's performance varies significantly based on temperature and humidity levels. The conversation also covers the evolution of ventilation requirements in modern homes and Santa Fe's response with new products featuring larger fans and eight-inch ventilation ducts to better match dehumidification capacity with ventilation needs. Key Topics Covered: The history and evolution of whole-house dehumidification The relationship between modern AC systems and dehumidification challenges The importance of proper sizing and installation of dehumidifiers How building codes and tighter construction affect moisture control needs The role of ventilation in modern dehumidification systems The impact of temperature on dehumidifier performance ratings Common installation mistakes and best practices The significance of dew point versus relative humidity The challenges of maintaining specific relative humidity levels in homes New developments in dehumidifier technology, including larger ventilation ducts The importance of proper data and performance metrics in system design Resources for contractors and technicians learning about dehumidification Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? In this short episode of the HVAC School podcast, Bryan and Tom Lorenz from Copeland talk about the new Sensi equipment interface. This product has been in field trials for months and will be launching in February. It will also be featured at the 2025 AHR Expo in Orlando. You can learn more about when and where the product launch will be at AHR at https://ahr25.mapyourshow.com/8_0/sessions/session-details.cfm?scheduleid=197. Sensi is launching the new Sensi equipment interface module (indoor and outdoor), which eliminates the need to pull additional thermostat wire, and it's great for upgrades from A/C units to heat pumps or single-stage or multi-stage units. These have a strong wireless connection that can be picked up approximately 100 feet through walls. The ideal indoor application will be whenever you have single-stage to multi-stage upgrades and can't pull more wires. Outdoor applications are best for A/C-to-heat pump conversions and upgrades from single-stage to multi-stage. This module also contains outdoor sensors and can work with accessories like dehumidifiers. The Sensi equipment interface module has been tested in extreme weather conditions and has proven its durability. These will be launched as part of a kit with indoor and outdoor modules and a Sensi Touch 2 smart thermostat. The Sensi Touch 2 will also receive an upgrade to make it compatible with the new Sensi equipment interface module. The Sensi equipment interface module will also come with contractor branding capabilities, which is an option for Sensi smart thermostats and traditional White-Rodgers thermostats. I have one more great guest with an awesome story who ran the American Heroes Run this year. James Gaa completed 36 laps, or about 37 miles, of the 9 hour and 11 minute run. Pretty darn good for a guy who only began running a little more than a year prior. James had been primarily spending his time in the weight room before deciding to start to run in 2023, and has done so every day since. It's launched him on a journey to help him overcome the traumas of an abusive childhood and the drug-related death of his mother. His first goal was to run a marathon. Check. Then an ultramarathon. Check. Both of which almost didn't happen after a heavy table base fell on his head in a warehouse at his job. James has a very well-developed perspective on how all of these events have shaped his life as well as on his journey to discover how far he can test himself, so I think you'll gain a lot listening to this chat. I really enjoyed learning a bit about his story at the AHR, and a lot of it more here. I'm excited to see how far James will venture on this personal adventure.James Gaa@jamesgaaMapMyRun James GaaBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 11, 2024 is: armistice AHR-muh-stus noun An armistice is an agreement to stop fighting a war, or in other words, a truce. // Both sides in the conflict agreed to an armistice. See the entry > Examples: "The year is 1918, and the armistice is just around the corner, but no one on the front line can possibly know that yet." — Damon Wise, Deadline, 31 Aug. 2024 Did you know? Armistice comes from the New Latin word armistitium, which in turn combines a stem of the Latin verb sistere, meaning "to make stand, halt, bring to a standstill," with arma, meaning "implements of war, weapons." An armistice, therefore, is literally a cessation of arms. Armistice Day is the name that was given to the holiday celebrated in the United States on November 11 before it was renamed Veterans Day by Congress in 1954. The original name refers to the agreement between the Allied Powers and Germany to end the hostilities that constituted the First World War—an agreement designated to take effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

I'm Stacey Simms and every other Friday I bring you a short episode with the top diabetes stories and headlines happening now. XX The U.S. Federal Trade Commission sued the country's three largest pharmacy benefit managers on Friday, accusing them of steering diabetes patients towards higher priced insulin in order to reap millions of dollars in rebates from pharmaceutical companies. The case accuses UnitedHealth Group Inc's (UNH.N), opens new tab Optum unit, CVS Health Corp's (CVS.N), opens new tab CVS Caremark and Cigna Corp's (CI.N), opens new tab Express Scripts of unfairly excluding lower cost insulin products from lists of drugs covered by insurers. The three companies said in statements that the suit was baseless and defended their business practices, saying that they had lowered insulin prices for businesses, unions and patients. https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/us-ftc-sues-drug-gatekeepers-over-high-insulin-prices-2024-09-20/ XX A new study finds metformin, may slow aging. Previous studies on "lower order" species have found that it can delay the onset of age-related diseases. Gotta say, this is only in animal studies right now, not people, human trials are next. https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/diabetes-drug-metformin-aging/ XX New research from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine identifies a potential new approach to address the opioid overdose epidemic—which has devastated families and communities nationally. The study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, suggests semaglutide is linked to lower opioid overdoses in people with opioid-use disorder (OUD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide receptor (GLP-1R) molecule that decreases hunger and helps regulate blood sugar in T2D, is also the active component in the diabetes and weight-loss drugs Wegovy and Ozempic. The research team—led by biomedical informatics professor Rong Xu—analyzed six years of electronic records of nearly 33,000 patients with OUD who also had T2D. The researchers used a statistical approach that mimics a randomized clinical trial. They found patients prescribed semaglutide had a significantly lower risk for opioid overdose, compared to those who had taken any of eight other anti-diabetic medications, including other types of GLP-1R-targeting medications. About 107,500 people died from drug overdoses nationally in 2023, mostly from opioids, according to the CDC. Despite effective medications to prevent overdoses from OUD, the CDC estimates only a quarter of those with OUD receive them and about half discontinue treatment within six months. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2024-09-popular-diabetes-weight-loss-drug.html XX New research analyzing the effects of two drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes indicates a consistent lack of cardiovascular and renal benefits in Black populations. The drugs, called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2-Is) and glucogen-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs), are some of the newer treatments prescribed to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. The research findings, published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, show that for White and Asian populations, SGLT2-Is and GLP1-RAs have beneficial effects on blood pressure, weight control and renal function, and significantly reduce the risk of severe heart problems and kidney disease. However, the research shows no evidence of these beneficial effects in Black populations. ""Whether the differences are due to issues with under-representation of Black populations and low statistical power, or to racial/ethnic variations in the way the body and these drugs interact with each other needs further investigation," said Professor Seidu. "It is therefore important that prescribers don't hasten to deny these newer treatments to Black populations on the back of this research." https://www.news-medical.net/news/20240923/Research-reveals-disparities-in-diabetes-drug-efficacy-for-Black-populations.aspx XX If a woman is already in a "prediabetic" state in her teen or college years, her odds for a serious complication of pregnancy later in life rises, new research shows. Ignoring prediabetes in teenagers "may represent a missed opportunity to avert pregnancy-related complications" later, said study lead author Katharine McCarthy. She's an assistant professor of population health science and policy, and obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Her team published its findings Sept. 24 in the journal JAMA Network Open. Prior research has found that rates of prediabetes have tripled among Americans ages 12 to 19 over the past decade. In the new study, the Mount Sinai team tracked rates of prediabetes (using blood sugar tests) among a group of 14,000 New York City residents ages 10 to 24. None of these individuals had full-blown diabetes at the time they were tested. Having prediabetes in youth was linked to a doubling of risk of gestational diabetes -- new-onset diabetes while pregnant. Tracking blood levels of hemoglobin A1c, a measure of a person's average blood sugar level over the prior three months, was very predictive of whether or a not a woman would get gestational diabetes, the team found. Prediabetes in youth was also linked to an 18% rise in the risk for hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, or preterm delivery. Measuring a teen girl's blood for signs of prediabetes might help protect her against trouble in a later pregnancy, McCarthy's group said. https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2024-09-24/prediabetes-in-teens-could-raise-odds-for-complicated-pregnancies-later XX Is there a link between IBD and type 1? In a recent and very large study, researchers looked at more than 630-thousdan people and found that irritable bowel disease seemed to significantly increase the risk of type 1 diabetes and vice versa. Interestingly, patients with IBD were found to have a significantly higher probability of formerly having contracted T1D, validating the bidirectional associations between these comorbidities. The highest risk was observed in patients with ulcerative colitis (aHR = 2.02), highlighting a stronger association with this IBD subtype. Additionally, over 70% of the study cohort was followed for more than ten years, reinforcing the robustness of these findings. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20240919/IBD-increases-type-1-diabetes-risk-revealing-a-bidirectional-link-between-the-two-conditions.aspx XX Roche plans to launch its first continuous glucose monitor (CGM) in Europe “in the coming weeks,” The Accu-Chek Smartguide has European approval for adults with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Roche will roll out the CGM in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Accu-Chek Smartguide can be worn for 14 days, and features predictive algorithms that Roche hopes will differentiate it from competitors Abbott and Dexcom. However, it also must be calibrated at first using a finger stick, which the other brands don't require. Roche developed the CGM with three different prediction tools: A feature to predict the risk of low blood glucose within 30 minutes, a feature to forecast glucose levels over the next two hours, and a feature to predict hypoglycemia risk at night. Pau Herrero, an algorithm and decision support tech lead at Roche, said the device provides a different picture than the trend arrows other CGMs use, which typically forecast glucose levels over the next 20 minutes. The predictions are based on multiple days of patient data using machine learning models. The company is in “active discussions” with the Food and Drug Administration on bringing Accu-Chek Smartguide to the U.S., Moreiras said, adding that he “cannot commit to any timelines.” https://www.medtechdive.com/news/roche-cgm-launch-europe/726863/ XX Exciting news! iLet users can now invite friends and family to join their Bionic Circle to see their diabetes data and receive alerts. The survey shows that diabetes can not only negatively impact a person's physical health but can also negatively affect their personal relationships, work or studies, leisure activities, financial situation, and emotional well-being. In fact, nearly 90% of people living with type 1 diabetes and 70% of people living with type 2 diabetes experience shame and blame for having diabetes. “As someone who lives with type 2 diabetes, I know first-hand how stigma can negatively impact the quality of life for people living with this condition in Canada,” says Laura Syron, President & CEO of Diabetes Canada. “We need to change the conversation around diabetes—the values, beliefs and language—so that people living with this condition can feel more accepted and understood. These feelings can dramatically improve the likelihood that people living with diabetes can receive the support and care they need to better their health outcomes and their quality of life.” In the survey, key findings show how people living with diabetes must deal with unfair assumptions about what they can and cannot do, judgements if they consume specific foods, and being blamed for having diabetes. 40% of people with T1D never or rarely ask for support to help manage their diabetes when they need it. 56% of people with T2D never or rarely ask for support to help manage their diabetes when they need it. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/diabetes-canada-releases-first-kind-101300695.html?guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJIrWwjdye-ehrLNDt-LIGb5qTXaKDTIa8NWwiT7fKwFFgjDMN2nnINis6YfFePWP2ZA2DVYWXEIZQqRlQ4aKLFrYWgvw1jdI-t1n9kO6NIzdBCMXQNNCVl_S-75lDNip2SysHDJQmyqSc4wLjfDya3v9wwTWU-KgE_OqrPCTnlu XX Edgepark commercial XX This is National Glucose Awareness Week. How does a passion for biophilic design, which stems from a desire to improve an architect and designer's own health, lead to the design of a major new healthcare building? For Steven Edge, founder of Salvage Sustainable Design, his personal interest in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) expanded into advocacy of Biophilic Design in buildings. We catch up with and discuss his recent project, commissioned by Manchester based architects AHR in 2017, where he acted as biophilic design consultant for their client the Royal College of Physicians' new £35, million HQ in Liverpool. The Spine opened in the Spring of 2021 and with 109 out of a possible 110 WELL Credits, the highest of any (over 26,000) WELL certified buildings in the world, its set to become one of the healthiest buildings in the world.Stephen is a biophilic design consultant, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, with over 40 years' experience in academia and the design and construction industry. He shares his background, starting with work in architecture and interior design, and his growing interest in sustainability and healthy materials.Talking about biophilic design principles used in The Spine, Steve describes how The Royal College of Physicians wanted to create a building that would make people feel healthier when they left it than when they entered; a brief that was fully met. Because it's a college as well as Office Spaces, they have young surgeons who would also be diagnosing real patients' problems in this new building. The design, led by architect Rob Hopkins, drew inspiration from the human body, with elements like the "skin" of the building and the "spine" staircase.Steven describes how the team incorporated biophilic design principles to support health and wellbeing. This included maximizing natural daylight, providing views of nature, and incorporating lush indoor planting that was dubbed the "lungs" of the building. One of the things he mentions, is that trees give out a hormone that stimulates the vagus nerve in our brains. It calms us down, and so we are not only breathing that in but are also visually affected by the fact that we're in nature and walking under a tree canopy. The design also features sensors to allow occupants to control their immediate environment and temperature. Taking an holistic approach it uses innovative materials such as a clay plaster that absorbs toxins from the air.The team also looked at principles of biomimicry, taking cues from natural structures like bone to inform the building's columns. Interactive elements, like kinetic sculptures, were planned to encourage movement and play. Steven explains how lighting was a key consideration, with the team aiming to support circadian rhythms through strategic use of natural and artificial light. They consulted research on how lighting can impact productivity and mood throughout the day.Beyond the immediate health benefits, Edge discusses the links between biophilic design and sustainability. The team explored circular economy principles, looking at designing for disassembly and the potential to lease lighting systems rather than own them outright. They also drew on NASA research to select plant species known for their air purifying properties. The Spine is an amazing and inspirational project for any designer and architect. It demonstrates an holistic approach to biophilic design, integrating elements that support human health, wellbeing, and environmental sustainability.Edge's passion for this approach shines through, as he envisions a future with more playful, interactive biophilic design elements woven into our cities and buildings. For more information on Steve's work visit: www.salvedge.co.ukThese are a couple of the extra references mentioned in the podcast:https://www.squintopera.com/projects/floodedlondon/ https://www.studioroosegaarde.net/project/wind-3-0 and https://www.studioroosegaarde.net/project/flow Also Dr Vanessa Champion, will also be presenting at the Healthy Cities by Design Conference at The Spine on 15 and 16 October 2024 https://www.healthycitydesign.global And Steve Edge will be presenting at the Biophilic Design Conference 12 November 2024 at the Barbican London (another Biophilic Space, we will also be in the Conservatory, the second largest after Kew Gardens). www.biophilicdesignconference.com
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 18, 2024 is: artifice AHR-tuh-fus noun Artifice refers to dishonest or insincere behavior or speech that is meant to deceive someone. It can also be used to mean "clever or artful skill." // We found ourselves tremendously moved by his apology, which he made without artifice or pretense. See the entry > Examples: "At the time, almost every comedy on air was filmed live in front of a studio audience—or at least pretended to be. Pretty much all of the biggest shows used a laugh track—The Andy Griffith Show, The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres. Savvy viewers might have figured out that not all of the giggles and guffaws were real, but few people outside the industry understood the extent of the artifice." — Jacob Stern, The Atlantic, 15 Apr. 2024 Did you know? Do great actors display artifice or art? Sometimes a bit of both. Artifice stresses creative skill or intelligence, but it also implies a sense of falseness and trickery. Art generally rises above such falseness, suggesting instead an unanalyzable creative force. Actors may rely on some of each, but the personae they display in their roles are usually artificial creations. Therein lies a lexical connection between art and artifice. Artifice comes from artificium, Latin for "artistry, craftmanship, craft, craftiness, and cunning." (That root also gave us the English word artificial.) Artificium, in turn, developed from ars, the Latin root underlying the word art (and related terms such as artist and artisan).

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 30, 2023 is: arduous AHR-juh-wus adjective Arduous is an adjective used to describe something that is very difficult or strenuous. // The gorgeous waterfall at the top of the mountain was worth the arduous hike. See the entry > Examples: “And with [hockey player, Patrice] Bergeron now enjoying the retired life after 19 seasons spent with the Bruins, the six-time Selke Trophy winner acknowledged that [Zdeno] Chara has already tried to recruit him for some arduous training.” — Conor Ryan, Boston.com, 21 Nov. 2023 Did you know? Arduous isn't the type of word one expects to hear in a folk song—it's a bit too formal—but strenuous work and difficult journeys are the stuff of many a classic tune. Take “The Wayfaring Stranger,” for an example, a somber song about life's travails performed by everyone from singer and activist Paul Robeson to country star Emmylou Harris: “I know dark clouds will gather o'er me / I know my pathway's rough and steep.” Such a lyric gets at the dual literal/figurative nature of arduous, which comes from the Latin adjective arduus, meaning “high,” “steep,” or “difficult.” For quite a while after appearing in English in the mid-1500s, arduous hewed closely to the figurative “strenuous” or “difficult” sense until poet Alexander Pope invoked steepness when he wrote of “those arduous paths they trod” in his 1711 work “An Essay on Criticism.” To pen such a work at the age of 23, and in heroic couplets no less, must have been an arduous challenge indeed, but like the wayfaring stranger seeking a brighter land, Pope had his eyes on the prize.
