Abby and Patrick welcome Dan Taberski, creator of the brand-new podcast series Hysterical. They explore the genesis of the series and the challenges and rewards of confronting both the history and the present of “the H-word.” Tracking the trajectories of this famously “elusive neurosis,” Hysterical looks to episodes from colonial America to Belle Epoque Paris to modern-day Iran, and tracks the stories of people from high school students in upstate New York to a prosecutor in Ohio to former CIA agents. How does the documentary balance the different senses of “hysteria” and being “hysterical” as concepts in the history of medicine, as labels used to stigmatize and dismiss suffering, and as a clarifying term for understanding contemporary events? What is ultimately diagnosable as “real” in the brain, in our genes, or according to the DSM – and how do we square those supposed answers with our personal narratives, beliefs, and certainties? In what ways do the individual symptoms of “conversion disorders” reflect underlying social conditions? And how do moral panics and fits of “mass hysteria” reveal hierarchies of gender, race, vulnerability, and power? Taberski tells us about what it was like to interview such a wide range of subjects, and how the show worked to put their stories and personal feelings about “the H-word” into dialogue with interpretations by doctors, sociologists, psychoanalysts, and pundits. Plus: secondary gain, the idea of “evenly hovering attention,” the ethics of leaning into messiness, and the psychoanalytically provocative aspects of podcasting. You can listen to Hysterical anywhere you get your podcasts; more details are here: https://wondery.com/shows/hysterical/A podcast about psychoanalysis, politics, pop culture, and the ways we suffer now. This episode was inspired by the super popular and super awesome video game and HBO adaptation “The Last of Us”. In the series, cordyceps evolve to spawn a zombie pandemic but is this more than science fiction? While nothing of this magnitude is likely to happen, the fungus ergot has been cited as the possible cause of an event in 1951 where many people in a small town had some pretty intense hallucinations after eating bread made from questionable flour. Ergot is also a possible explanation for the 1518 Dancing Plague in Strasbourg where it is said hundreds of people were compelled to dance even though they were exhausted and in pain. Some people even lost their lives. The potential cures for the Dancing Plague were almost as weird as the affliction itself! Warning: some language or themes may not be suitable for all ages. We've been collecting-up plenty of oceanic content and delicious electronic tracks for y'all to take in. And I hope you're ready for what's about to be unleashed. Because this week we're taking stock of things from the white sands and emerald seas of Carmel Beach, interviewing bodysurfers during the first-ever USA Bodysurfing competition at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz and then handing over the keys to DJ Ergot for his second guest mix for the Frequency Horizon. Tune in each week at kpcr.org from 10-midnight pacific time or 92.9FM in the Los Gatos / San Jose area.
Having first captured our attention with Monolithic Nuance (2018) for Longform Editions, Megan Mitchell's Cruel Diagonals has continued to impress with each new work. With Fractured Whole, she set herself the task of producing an album using nothing but her voice as raw material. While she deserves recognition as a gifted vocalist, she deserves at least as much praise for her production work, alchemically transmuting her voice into a wide range of instruments and textures. In this episode, she discusses the production challenges posed by Fractured Whole, her background in musical theatre, her work with the feminist archive Many Many Women, and much more. Michael Simler returns my bicycle, which he'd rented for Burning Man 2023. And despite the hectic, rainy circumstances at this year's event, the bike is somehow in better condition than when he left. He gives us the blow-by-blow of his first every Burn via a longform convo. And DJ Ergot—a Santa Cruz County local I met down at Steamer Lane just hours after last week's episode—delivers a guest mix with plenty of dirty and bouncy basslines. #BurningMan #electronicmusic #storytelling #DJ #synthesizers Cover photo courtesy of Michael Simler Theme music: Butterflywingtip "BBB"

In 857 A.D., in the Rhine Valley, an outbreak of a disease causing hallucinations, gangrene, and death occurred. Because the symptoms included a severe burning sensation, and it was believed to be a punishment from God, it came to be known as Holy Fire. Join April, Harmony and Maggie as they explore two historical witches in North America. The first woman accused of being a witch in Salem, Massachussets in 1692 was Tituba, a slave woman. This launched one of the most famous witch hunts in history where twenty-five people were killed for being a witch. Ergot poisoning is the culprit to some of the visions that may have led to the witch accusations, which has a similar effect to the body as the modern day drug, LSD. Cotton Mather used the Malleus Maleficarum, The Witches Hammer, a book published in 1486 to discover who was a witch. Grace Sherwood, the witch of Pungo lived in the Virginia Beach area in the late 1600's. She was a midwife, cared for animals and had knowledge of herbs. She was accused of being a witch when her neighbor had a miscarriage. Grace was found to have two witch marks and was found guilty in a Colonial trial and sentenced to witch dunking. She wouldn't die after several attempts of dunking. She was kept in prison until 1714 and then was quietly released. Today on Mushroom Hour we are joined by the distinguished and prolific George Poinar, Jr. PhD. George received his Ph.D. in biology from Cornell University and spent most of his career in the Department of Entomology at the University of California at Berkeley before moving to Oregon State University, where he is a professor in the Department of Integrative Biology. His interest in the tropics, along with a passion for paleontology, culminated in the book The Amber Forest, co-authored with his wife, Roberta, and published by Princeton University Press. He is also the author of other books, including Life in Amber. In addition, he is a founder of The Amber Institute. He is a pioneer when it comes to studying associations between invertebrates and other organisms in amber. One of his projects was recently all over the news as he discovered a new genus and species of fungal entomoparasite growing out of a fossilized ant – the older mushroom growing from an ant that has ever been found! A West Central Tribune Minute feature story: The Dassel History Center and Ergot Museum not only tells the interesting story of ergot, but also covers a wide range of the city's past.
It is one of the darkest, yet most alluring parts of early American History, and although it only lasted for one year [1692-1693] the Salem Witch Trials spellbind us to this day. Dawn sits down with guest, Alex Malt, who is eager to get into this bewitching history and go visit his hometown sites with more authority next time. 00:07:42 - After some catching up and chit-chat, Dawn gets into her sources, 2 Books:Death in Salem - Diane E FouldsThe Salem Witch Trials. A Day-by-Day Chronicle of a city under siege - by Marilynne K Roach. But first, just the general stats on The Salem Witch Trials: 200 people were accused30 found guilty20 executed19 hanged1 pressed to death7 died in jail00:13:27 - Dawn lays out her plan for the episode: First to tell the general story of the Salem Witch Trials, the HILFY-est Who's-what's of the story. Then, after the break, we will dive into the WHY and the HOW - which has been the focus of study in the 330-ish years since the Salem Witch Trials took place.00:14:58 - We begin in January, 1692 in the cold, cold house of the cold, cold man, Rev. Samuel Parris. His daughter Betty and his niece Abigail have been trying their hand and fortune telling when all shit breaks loose. 00:22:50 - Fortune Telling? Witch Cakes? THE DEVIL... There is no redder meat for a Puritan Village and the accusations begin to spread like wildfire. 00:31:25 - The executions took place in Salem and they were all, except one, done by hanging. Giles Corey was pressed to death in a method considered archaic even by these animals. 00:36:25 - All of the so-called judges were - to put it bluntly - cunts. But one of them was particularly cunty and his name is John Hawthorne. His descendant, Nathanial Hawthorne, would go on to apologize for his ancestor - and to write the novel The Scarlet Letter. PART 2 00:42:28 - We know that Salem didn't invent the idea of Witch Craft. Dawn goes back to English Witch Trials and how their laws and courts set a precedent for Salem - but it was, of course, horribly flawed and outdated even for the time. Dawn begins to lay out her favorite theories that have developed over the years in an attempt to explain WHY and HOW these horrible events could have happened: 00:48:33 - THEORY #1 - Teenage Girls Just Suck.Which is not entirely untrue, but it ignores the unique circumstances of the specific girls who were first 'afflicted' in Salem. Many of them - at least nine by my count - had witnessed firsthand bloody and murderous violence in the frontier by and against the native Americans. 00:55:22 - THEORY #2 - It was never about witches - all local grievances and petty politics. No doubt, grievances and politics played a huge role in the Salem Witch Trials but - of course - they are at play in every community on earth. They were not so deep or so bloody or so egregious that they explain the murder of 20 people in 12 months. Also, it's not so local as the rifts are reflected as far away as the Mother England. 01:02:30 - THEORY #3 - They were DRUGGED!Ergot is a hallucination-inducing mold that grows on some grains and breads in certain weather scenarios. In 1976, Linnda R. Corpale suggested that this is to blame for the effects in Salem. It's a neat theory. Makes sense and lets us off the hook. It's been pretty roundly dismissed. "01:05:15 - THEORY #4 - It was the Devil. If you are among the faithful who believe in the biblical interpretation of the apocalypse, good and evil - God and the Devil locked in an eternal battle for our souls - then this is NOT a story of psychosis, politics or moldy bread. Yes innocent people were murdered in Salem, but it was still the DEVIL who did that - using people as his pawns. At least that was how they were explaining it in 1697. ---THANK YOU so much for listening.
