The discography of Schoolly D is one of the most diverse and lengthy that we've ever covered on DITD. Where he begins providing the seeds of what eventually becomes known as "Gangsta Rap", he then goes through a more pro-Black phase in the 90s and nowadays operates as a relative experimentalist for somebody whose debut came out in 1985.TIMESTAMPS:Weekly Music Roundup - (1:15)Ben:Benny the Butcher - ExcelsiorYung Lean - JonatanJPEGMAFIA x Flume - We Live in a SocietyCharlie:Jericho Jackson - I Am HimAntsLive - Carpe Diem1999 WRITE THE FUTURE & The Pharcyde - TimelessRyder - RYDERHOODAlex Isley - WHENKatalyst - SpeakeasyVinocio - TostadosNejma Nefertiti - Jayne Wayne The JuggernautMychelle - Good DayWretch 32 - HOME?Topic Intro/Ben's Research House - (14:40)Schoolly D - (23:50)Saturday Night! – The Album - (30:37)Smoke Some Kill - (33:20)Am I Black Enough for You? - (35:41)How a Black Man Feels - (40:39)Welcome to America - (44:45)Reservoir Dog - (50:22)International Supersport - (53:41)Cause Schoolly D Is Crazy - (57:27) Lighter Note - (1:04:22) Thanks for listening. Hip-hop or hip hop is a genre of popular music that emerged in the early 1970s in New York City. The genre is characterized by stylized rhythmic sounds—often built around disco grooves, electronic drum beats, and rapping, a percussive vocal delivery of rhymed poetic speech as consciousness-raising expression. The music developed as part of the broader hip-hop culture; while often used to refer solely to rapping and rap music, "hip-hop" more properly denotes the entire subculture. In modern times, there has been a push to give credit to the Central Intelligence Agency as being the sole catalyst in the creation of the hip-hop movement. Join MC Joel on a trek through the true origins of hip-hop including where the words came from and the first rap song. He takes a closer look at the beginnings of Gangsta Rap which has since become a staple of the hip-hop industry to the point some people believe that is what is actually hip-hop. Finally, Joel looks at the mysterious email sent by an anonymous label executive from the early 90s claiming the industry was told to push Gangsta Rap to help fill privatized prisons. 一般被认为早期的 Jazz Rap 歌曲是 “Talkin' All That Jazz” , 发行于 1988 年,来自纽约的 Stetsasonic 组合为了回击 James Mutume (Funk 乐队 Mutume 主创)对 Hip-Hop 音乐形式的的批评,旋律采样了 Lonnie Liston Smith “Expansions”;纽约组合 Gang Starr 1989 年首作 "No More Mr.Nice Guy” 中就有几首采样爵士乐的歌曲,这促使了导演 Spike Lee 邀请 DJ Premier 为他 1990 年的电影 “Mo Better Blues” 制作了电影歌曲“Jazz Thing”,这首歌对爵士大家们的致敬使它成为了 Jazz Rap 的经典代表;Gang Starr 的前三张可以被认为是 Jazz Rap,从 1994 的 “Hard to Earn”开始更加硬核;Gang Starr 成员之一 Guru 的 Jazzmatazz 系列,其中发表于 1993 年的 Vol.1 中不仅有当时拥抱融合爵士乐的前辈,也有同辈的跨界爵士乐手和 rapper;纽约集体 Native Tongue 在采样手法上跳出了以往 James Brown 的范围,重要组合 A Tribe Called Quest 从 1990 年发表首张专辑开始就成了 Jazz Rap 高水准的代表,1991 年的 “Low End Theory” 奠定了 90s 东岸说唱的美学,1993 年的 “Midnight Marauders” 更是在制作层面达到新的高度;推荐纪录片 “Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travel of A Tribe Called Quest” (2011)1992 年 Pete Rock 和 C.L. Smooth 的 “Mecca and the Soul Brothers” 是超越时代的制作水平,Pete Rock 制作风格的独特性;以局外人姿态进入 Jazz Rap 场景的组合 Digable Planets 两张专辑都是我们的爱,1993 年的 “Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space” 明显体现出 Butterfly 特立独行的抽象哲思和采样上的想法,1994 年的 “Blowout Comb” 主题更多围绕黑人民族主义主张;来自费城乐队形式的 The Roots 的 “Organix”(1993)和 “Do You Want More?!!!??! Dream Warriors “And Now the Legacy Begins” (1991) , Brand New Heavies “Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol.1” (1992) , 英国 Us3,法国 MC Soolar, Soon E MC,制作人 Jimmy Jay;02. Episode Playlist:A Tribe Called Quest - “Scenario”Stetsasonic - “Talkin' All That Jazz”Gang Starr - “Jazz Thing”Gang Starr - “The Place We Dwell”Guru - “Loungin'" ft. We were listening to some Kenny Rogers records with our buddy Adam Carrolla when Adam revealed the true story behind the music. It seems Kenny had a bit of a morbid streak on some of his hits, like "Ruby" and "Coward Of The County" which tell dark tales that we have a good laugh at! John's even got a theory that Kenny Rogers was influential in the beginnings of Gangsta Rap, which Adam, being the expert on all things gangsta, can confirm. I've been quoting this movie for a long time, or rather singing one of the songs from this movie for a long time. I had never actually watched the movie though.. That changes today. On this episode I revisit the infamous "1994 Crime Bill" that Joe Biden was the architect of. Many of us black folks who were against crime within our communities were PRO FOR THIS BILL. Jason Whitlock knows a thing or two about beef. His ongoing feud with ESPN's leading man Stephen A. Smith continues to rage on, even after SAS vows never to address Whitlock again — again. Shannon Sharpe's latest beef with comedian Mike Epps took a much more serious tone and escalated quickly when Epps made a not-so-subtle threat and challenged Shay Shay to hit him up at the NBA All-Star weekend in Indianapolis. Whitlock says it's the product of ESPN and sports media embracing the “gangsta rap” lifestyle. Media members like Sharpe, Stephen A., Richard Sherman, and Matt Barnes, devoid of any upstanding character traits, resort to playing the role written for them by executives like ESPN's Bob Iger. Iger takes his cues from Death Row Records' Suge Knight and carefully crafts the images of his black media stars to reflect the devolution of hip-hop in hopes of cashing in on rap's omnipresence in American pop culture. Steve Kim joins “Fearless” to discuss sports media going gangsta and add his thoughts to the continued controversy over the “black national anthem.” We want to hear from the Fearless Army!! On this episode, Dr. Lee Pierce (she/they)--Asst. Prof. of Communication at SUNY Geneseo--interviews Bryan McCann (he/his)--Associate Professor of Communication at Louisiana State University--on a dope new work of cultural criticism The Mark of Criminality: Rhetoric, Race, and Gangsta Rap in the War-on-Crime Era (University of Alabama Press, 2017). The Mark of Criminality positions the work of key gangsta rap artists--Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Tupac Shakur--as well as the controversies their work produced, squarely within the law-and-order politics and popular culture of the 1980s and 1990s to reveal a profoundly complex period in American history when the meanings of crime and criminality were incredibly unstable. McCann argues that, among other well-circulated meanings, the mark of criminality was a source of power, credibility, and revenue. By understanding gangsta rap as a potent, if deeply imperfect, enactment of the mark of criminality, we can better understand how crime is always a site of struggle over meaning. James Harris a.k.a. Dewey Da Don is an entrepreneur and multi-dimensional hip hop artist with a unique sound and style. Dewey's music is street and raw with catchy hooks and metaphors that incorporate west coast production with a mid-west flow. Today we cover the formation of the infamous Bloods and Crips gang rivalry. How did it get started? Why did it begin in South Central Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early 1970s? The Crips were founded by two high schoolers named Raymond Washington and Stanley “Tookie” Williams, who formed an alliance to protect their neighborhoods from other young people who were harassing them. And then very quickly, gang violence escalated far beyond beating up other kids with your fists to drive-by shootings, over 15,000 murders, and controlling much of the nation's drug trade. Hope you find all this info as interesting as I did.
