Jesus reveals himself in the community of worship through the preaching of his word and the sacrament of Holy Communion.
In this episode, we take a deep dive into the evolution of food television, from the early days of simple, instructional shows to today's diverse and dynamic culinary landscape. We'll explore how icons like Betty Crocker shaped early cooking programs, empowering women in the kitchen, and how trailblazers like Julia Child, Emeril Lagasse, and Guy Fieri pushed boundaries—changing not just how we cook, but how we see race and gender in food media. We'll also journey into the origins of Iron Chef, its impact on Asian identity, and how it became a global cultural phenomenon. Plus, we'll reflect on the genre's transition to streaming, where shows like Chef's Table have brought a more artistic, inclusive approach to the culinary world. And as food competition shows shift from cutthroat to kind, what does the future hold for food media? Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Books by Tasha Oren: Food TV ; Global Asian American Popular CulturesJoyce ChenEddie WangDavid Chang The Evolution of Television FormatsMasterChef Junior: Watch on HuluProject Runway: Watch on Netflix, IMDbSurvivor: Watch on CBSJulia ChildJulia Child's The French Chef by Dana PolanThe French Chef with Julia ChildSmithsonian Air and Space Museum ; Julia Child clipEmeril Lagasse ; Emeril Live clipIron Chef ; Netflix TrailerWall Street (1987 film)Hillary Clinton and the Return of the (Unbaked) Cookies - New York TimesHillary Clinton explains "Bake cookies" remark April 1992 - DailymotionBetty Crocker - history; Betty Crocker on the radioGuy Fieri Food Network Curtis Aiken Mind of a Chef: Watch on Youtube, IMDbChef's Table trailer; Watch on Netflix, IMDbJeff Yang's new book, The Golden ScreenWilliam Shatner Hell's Kitchen: Watch on FOX, IMDbGordon Ramsay on Hot OnesBaking Impossible trailerThe Great British Bake OffBong Appetit: Trailer; Watch on Youtube, IDMbVanessa Lavorato & Miguel Trinidad (Bong Appetit) - The SmokeboxCooking with CannabisBake Squad trailerThe Bear trailer: Watch on Hulu, IMDbSimply Sara (YouTube)Check out our previous Episode 61: Broken Bread with Chef Roy Choi and KCET's Juan Devis ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Share your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! Rev. Jon Storck continues our Easter series "New Life: Post-Resurrection Conversations with Jesus", preaching from Luke 24:13-35
Jordan Davis | 04.16.23
We've all heard the Easter story. We know about the last supper, Jesus's trial, and crucifixion. We know that He was in the grave for 3 days before He rose again. But do you know what Jesus did once He was alive again? Who did he talk to? Where did he go on that first Resurrection Sunday? On Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, Pastor Chad Gilligan gives us a different kind of Easter story, the kind less likely told.
In this episode, we visit the Chinese American Museum, Los Angeles, with Dr. Gay Yuen, the museum's Board Chair. A lifelong educator, Dr. Yuen shares how her early days as a non-English speaking student in Los Angeles, influenced her to become a trailblazer in multi-lingual learning in southern California, and the real difference between language learner and language immersion programs. Dr. Yuen offers her unique perspective on gentrification in Chinatown, her appearance on an episode of Broken Bread with Roy Choi, and how she navigates the tensions between development and preserving her community's identity. Finally, we learn more about the history of LA's Chinatown and the Chinese Massacre of 1871, one of the worst and least-known atrocities in Los Angeles' history, and the role she'd like the Museum to play in sharing its story.
When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. . . . — Luke 24:30-31 This story in Luke 24 is mysterious. During the previous week, Jesus had eaten his final Passover meal with his disciples and had washed their feet. Then he had been arrested and crucified. But on Sunday morning some women who had gone to visit his tomb had said they had seen Jesus, alive! Now two of Jesus' followers were walking along the road to another town, and a stranger joined them. They told him of the tragic events of the previous week. The man then shocked them by teaching from the Scriptures that all these things had to happen to the Messiah, the Savior of God's people. When they reached the town, the two invited the man to stay with them. As they began to eat together, the man “took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.” Then “their eyes were opened and they recognized him”— their Lord Jesus was alive! And then he disappeared. The two said later that their hearts were “burning within” them as Jesus walked with them and taught them from the Scriptures. But it was not until he broke the bread that he became known to them. Similarly, our hearts can burn within us as we learn the Scriptures, and we can walk with Jesus in the power of his Spirit. But at the Lord's Supper we can encounter the Lord in a profound, unique way. Lord Jesus, thank you for revealing yourself in the breaking of bread. Fill us with your life to live for you. In your name, Amen.

As we engage the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead in Luke 24, allow yourself to be drawn deeper into the story using your imagination. You probably know the story well. You can probably recall many of the recorded details and events of the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. But this isn't just a story to recall, it's a story meant to be embodied and lived. Let the wonder and majesty of these events come alive in a new way today as you step into the story and put yourself in the shoes of Mary, or of Peter, or of Cleopas. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

We all know Peter Jackson as the man behind LORD OF THE RINGS (yaaaay!), THE HOBBIT (not so yay!), and a variety of goopy classics like MEET THE FEEBLES (yay!), DEAD ALIVE (yay!), and BADF TASTE (yay!), but were you aware that in 1995 he teamed up with Costa Botes to direct a faux-film history documentary? Well he did. It's called FORGOTTEN SILVER, and it's an influence on our guest, filmmaker Woody Fentress. Woody is the founder of the production companies Family Portrait Friend Pictures and Broken Bread. One time we went to see a Star War and he brought action figures. It was impressive.
