When most kids were mowing lawns or babysitting for some extra cash, Deborah Cox was doing session work and getting paid to sing at only 12 years old. The fact that she is who she is today — a platinum-record-selling artist and actor — is no surprise. But what might come as a surprise to some people is that Cox had a tough time getting her career off the ground at home in Canada. Even though her talent was so clear, she was rejected by almost every major label in the country. It wasn't until she moved to the U.S. that her career really took off and she became a legendary artist in R&B and beyond. Now, she's being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. She told Tom Power her story, about being honoured by Canada and how you hold the present with the past.

In a career spanning nearly 50 years, Canadian record producer Bob Ezrin has been just as close to the heartbeat of the music as the musicians themselves. He's produced huge albums, like Pink Floyd's The Wall, wrangled some of the most colourful and challenging personalities in classic rock, travelled all over the continent and earned a spot in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In that time, he's worked on major records with Lou Reed, U2, Kiss, Nine Inch Nails, Peter Gabriel, Alice Cooper and many more. Ezrin joined host Tom Power in the q studio to take us through the highlights of his unbelievable career, including one of the most notoriously troubled recording sessions ever with Pink Floyd, why his first gig as a producer for Alice Cooper "was like stepping into a Hieronymus Bosch painting," and why he once duct taped Peter Gabriel to a pillar.

This week on Mulligan Stew, Terry hosts a feature conversation with Steven Page, recorded live at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre. This past week, Barenaked Ladies celebrated their induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the NMC. As part of the festivities, Terry hosted a Q&A with Steven Page that explored highlights of his BNL career, his solo work, and his collaborations with Steven Duffy, Craig Northey and more. Unforgettable stories about his encounters with Brian Wilson, Billy Bragg, and Steven’s last minute prep for his JUNO reunion with BNL.
Tyler Stewart, drummer of the Barenaked Ladies, joined the show to talk about the band's Junos reunion and their induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. He then chimed in for our daily Trending Topix and weighted in on news that the Toronto Blue Jays are getting a cut from online scalpers.
To celebrate their impending reunion, in honour of their induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, we thought it would be beneficial to examine the long, strange and supremely goofy career and legacy of Canada's favourite band of joke-rockers, The Barenaked Ladies. We count down what we believe to be their 10 most enduring songs and ask important questions about the band's status as Canadian Music Hall of Famers. Questions asked, but barely answered include: Do the Barenaked Ladies have any good songs? What was up with Jim Creeggan’s tam? Is Ed Robertson one of Canada's best known rappers? Why did we do this to ourselves? And more.
This week's show is all about The 2018 JUNO Awards. JUNOs/CARAS CEO Allan Reid joins us to talk about the first year of their partnership with the CBC, how they decide which artists will perform during the televised awards show, injecting diversity into JUNOs programming and the CARAS board, and of course, the Barenaked Ladies reunion for their induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Plus, Andrew and Mike share some thoughts and predictions on some of the key categories, including Single, Album, Artist, and Group of the year.
My guest this week is the legendary rockabilly singer and bandleader, Ronnie Hawkins. I grew up knowing of Ronnie through his electrifying appearance in The Band's "The Last Waltz" movie, but as I learned more about the history, came to realize his importance as an artist in his own right, but also his abilities as a bandleader and talent scout. Like John Mayall did in the British blues scene, Ronnie could find the best players hidden away in remote corners, nurture them and bring them together like he did for one of the greatest bands ever, The Band (known originally as The Hawks)! In 1958 Ronnie released his first hit “Hey, Bo Diddley”. This was followed by "Marylou", which turned Hawkins into a teenage idol. Hawkins, an Arkansas native, started touring in Canada, and with an exploding rockabilly and Rock & Roll scene in Toronto and around more rural Ontario, Ronnie decided to stay. In 1959, Morris Levy signed him to Roulette Records for five years and tried to lure him back to the United States but Hawkins had fallen in love with Canada and didn't want to leave his new home. The membership of his band, The Hawks, kept changing as the talent flowed in and out, but the name stayed the same. Aside from The Band, there was another incarnation that became Janis Joplin's Full Tilt Boogie Band, and another Robbie Lane and the Disciples. Other famous Hawk alumni include David Clayton Thomas of Blood Sweat and Tears, actor Beverly D'Angelo, musician Lawrence Gowan, and fellow Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees Burton Cummings and David Foster. It was great to have a chance to hear these stories first-hand, have lots of laughs, and learn new things about a key piece of Rock and Roll history. Enjoy my conversation with Ronnie Hawkins, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!
In the few short years they have been together, The Washboard Union have defied classification and have become one of the most exciting and talked about new bands on the Canadian Country music scene. They’ve being nominated for Roots Artists of the Year by the British Columbia Country Music Association, have signed on with the country music power house management team at Sakamoto Entertainment and inked a recording deal Warner Music Canada/Slaight Music. The Washboard Union is made up of 6 members based out of Vancouver, British Columbia that are led by principles Aaron Grain, Chris Duncombe and David Roberts. The three share a very similar unconscious soundtrack and unbridled love for the art of songwriting and storytelling. The Washboard Union is an authentic blend of where country and bluegrass have come and where they are headed next. It is for that reason that the band has earned so many fans along the way. Serving notice that they are not about to conform to convention, the band’s independently released self-titled debut album was produced by noted rock producers Garth "GGGarth" Richardson (Nickelback, Hedley) and Canadian Music Hall of Famer Bob Ezrin (Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd). That record led to the band’s BC Country Music Association nomination. In January 2015, The Washboard Union returned to Nashville to record their latest EP In My Bones in the legendary RCA Studio A. The album was produced by Trey Bruce (Faith Hill, Randy Travis, Diamond Rio). The band met Trey after having written the song “Someday” together earlier in 2014. Trey called the band immediately after that first session and demanded he take the producer helm for the band's next record.
