What a privilege to talk with rock royalty like Ian Gillan. Deep Purple's 24th studio album drops on July 3rd, called Splat! Ian and I talk about his love for making new music, working with legendary producer Bob Ezrin, and a newfound energy in the band. That energy? Guitarist Simon McBride. Ian reaped praise on Simon for bringing a new spirit to the fold. Besides talking about the new "heavier" album, I had to relay a story to Ian about the time brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul told me about the first song they ever played together: Smoke On The Water. They told me that it was a six-minute song, that they stretched out to about six hours!Up next is Buffalo, New York musician, Ryan Perdz. Ryan is dropping a new record this August and is here to tell me about it. Where did he get his musical influences? Where did he play around Buffalo? How did grunge affect him? He's got a real Chris Cornell sound to his vocals. He's playing a show at the El Club in Detroit on June 14th. Enjoy!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week, we bow down and raise up the almighty guitar heroes! The foundation of Rock n' Punk n' Metal is the guitar and the amazing sounds that those who wield them can make. How do they make such wonderful noise with metal wires on a piece of wood? There's some kinda voodoo in their hands, and we set off on a journey to raise some of the 70s shredders that you may have forgotten! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old 70's Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! Songs this week include: Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush – “Electric Reflections Of War / The World Anthem / The Answer” from Live (1978) Rory Gallagher – “Shadow Play” from Photo-Finish (1978) Tommy Bolin – “Teaser” from Teaser (1975) Robert Fripp – “Disengage II” from Exposure (1979) Wild Horses – “The Rapist” from Wild Horses (1980) Dixie Dregs – “Punk Sandwich” from Night Of The Living Dregs (1979) Alice Cooper – “Devil's Food / The Black Widow” from The Alice Cooper Show (1977) Al Di Meola – “Race With Devil On Spanish Highway” from Elegant Gypsy (1977) Check us out on the Boneless Podcasting Network: https://bonelesspodcasting.com/ Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/ https://www.facebook.com/InObscuria https://twitter.com/inobscuria https://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/ Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria Store Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/ If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/ If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Morning crap pop pickers, it's another look at some of the worlds worst music, as we give you another episode of Trve. Crvp. Pop!On this week's show, sadly, Sam has been struck down by a malevolent being... or he's just feeling a bit poorly, and he can't be here. Luckily, what knight from yonder should cross our paths? Why it's Paul Waller of the excellent A Year in Horror podcast. He's here as we discuss Kiss' Music from "The Elder" the 9th studio album from the hard rock legends, released on the 10th of November 1981.We later 70's going into the 80's was a squiffy ol time for Kiss. They had embraced disco, gone pop, seen ticket and album sales take a nose dive and even their plans for a Kiss themed amusement park (which I'm sure you'll agree, we'd all love to have seen) were shelved. When original drummer Peter "The Cat" Criss exited the band, to be replaced by Eric Carr and his, not as good, Fox make up, Kiss knew they had to stop the slump. And what better way to do that than to write a concept album based on a short story by bassist Gene Simmons about... well... a boy...? And he... he's got to train to save...? Look, we're not really sure. But producer Bob Ezrin, fresh off the success of Pink Floyd's The Wall, was brought in to make it all hang together. In reality, all he did was get other people in to play over the members of Kiss' tracks and bump a shit load of cocaine. Guitarist Ace Frehley hated it, the rest of the band were immediately embarrassed by it, it went down in infamy as one of the worst albums in rock history. But, how bad is it really? We'll let you know.
Producer Bob Ezrin didn't just record KISS — he reshaped them. With orchestration, choirs, sound effects, and strict studio discipline, Destroyer became the album that pushed the band beyond their live reputation and into true superstardom. In this audio highlight, author Martin Popoff explains how Ezrin's production approach elevated the band's songwriting, performances, and overall ambition — creating one of the most important albums of the 1970s.Listen to Episode 360 - 1976: The Year KISS Took Over the World
Regarding… Music From The Elder kicks off Season Five of the Regarding… series with a deep dive into KISS's most infamous left turn: The Elder, the soundtrack to a movie that never existed—until now.Co-Hosts Greg “Wolfie” Wolf, Scott D. Monroe, Chaz Charles, and Corey Morissette enter the album track by track with eyes wide open, asking not whether it's good or bad, but what actually happens when a band builds an entire fantasy world and forgets how to live inside it. This season isn't about rehabilitating The Elder, and it's not about burying it either. It's about documenting it honestly. Oaky...honestly, they didn't need to ask if it was bad...but that is entirely besides the point. There are those who would disagree. The episode opens by framing the record's troubled history—Bob Ezrin, post-Wall ambition, band dysfunction, label interference, and the infamous resequencing that altered the original narrative. The hosts debate original vs. remastered track order before settling on the band's restored vision: “Fanfare” into “Just a Boy.”From there, the discussion digs into why the album alienated fans, how its medieval fantasy tropes collide with KISS's identity, and why certain ideas almost work when stripped of the band's branding. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons quotes add historical context, while sharp commentary compares The Elder to Tommy, 2112, Lord of the Rings, and even unintentional self-parody.The episode's major twist: the launch of an original, serialized movie script written by Scott D. Monroe. Each week, new pages will be released, expanding the story the album only hinted at—and sometimes actively avoided. This first episode features a full table read of the prologue, introducing Morpheus, the Elders, Mr. Blackwell, and the Boy, finally giving the album the narrative structure it never quite earned.Along the way, the hosts cover Ace Frehley's limited contributions, Bob Kulick's uncredited guitar work, the album's critical reputation, and why The Elder may be one of rock's most fascinating failures.Season Five begins exactly where Regarding… belongs: at the intersection of ambition, miscalculation, and just enough belief to make the whole thing worth examining. We listen so you don't have to.The ShowThree guys who are various stages of Def Leppard fans, and a guy who's just heard the hits (maybe...some of them.) Join the guys over a plate of Buffalo Chicken Wings as they give Def Leppard's 1996 album Slang an honest listen and try to figure out just what the hell "Slang" means anyways. We at The Wolf are excited to present our 250th episode of UAWIL and want to take a moment to thank all our loyal listeners & social media followers. Building this show and the community of fellow rock fans has been such a fun and sometimes magical adventure around the world these past 5 years. We want to express our sincere thanks for coming on the journey with us. Also, we like to do big guests on our 50th shows - Ryan Condal EP of House of the Dragon Ep 50, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets live (after welcoming Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt on earlier to promote the show) Ep 100, Steve Kilbey of The Church Ep 150 and Steve Howe of Yes Ep 200. And we are proud to welcome one of rock music's most celebrated and contracted cover artists, Hugh Syme. Hugh is best known for his work with Rush over 50 years as their first collaboration, Caress of Steel, is 50 this year. We learned from Hugh first hand how his original piece of art was given the sepia tone at print which we all know and the songs which inspired the front and back covers. We hear about working with Neil Peart, Bob Ezrin, David Coverdale, Jimmy Page and the many models he immortalized with iconic album covers. Hugh is also an accomplished musician in his own right and talks about recording with Rush, working with former guest of UAWIL Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds and jamming with Aerosmith. We found Hugh to be soft spoken yet wryly funny as he related tales of living in London as a teenager, working as a musician in Toronto, and the 80s and 90s living in LA when it was the heart of the music business. And for you Rush fans, listen until the end as he announces he just submitted his artwork for an upcoming Rush anniversary reissue of one of our favorite 1980's Rush records. We had a delightful conversation with Hugh and we hope you enjoy it. Thanks again for all the support these 250 episodes - it means the world to us. Can we make it to 1,000??? Time will tell but if you keep listening and telling us what you want to hear about, we'll keep making them. Thank you all!! Send us a textCrispian Mills was born into a family of actors, film producers and directors. He was exposed to a wide variety of music, but when he heard “You Really Got Me“ by The Kinks, it was an epiphany – he knew he wanted to play guitar. Through determination and practice, he became a great guitarist. He loved Deep Purple. He loved The Ramones. He played in bands including X-Ray Spex before forming Kula Shaker in 1996. Their debut album K was the fastest-selling debut since the self-titled first record by Elastica. Noel Gallagher, a fan of the band, invited them to open for Oasis at Knebworth. Their album, Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts, was recorded at David Gilmour's Astoria houseboat studio in London with production help from Bob Ezrin, Rick Rubin and George Drakoulias. Kula Shaker have continued to produce great psychedelic Brit-pop over the last couple decades. They released Natural Magick in 2024 as well as two recent singles, “Charge of the Light Brigade” and “Broke as Folk”. A tour with The Dandy Warhols kicks off this fall. He's a talented, spiritual, dynamic singer songwriter with a great guitar sound. It was fascinating to talk with Kula Shaker frontman… Crispian Mills.Photo by Alice Teeple. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! Is a double album a record label cash grab, or a way to deliver great music that can't be contained within the usual confines of a single LP? The double album has been both. This episode, we look at how the double album came to be, and some of the greatest double albums from the 70's. Most of these albums show career-best work from legendary artists such as The Beatles, The Clash, Bob Dylan, Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Genesis, Elton John, The Who (twice!) - and more! And soon, we'll do an episode on the Greatest Double Albums of the 80's - and there's a stack of those, too!!Our “Album you must hear Before You Die” is the 1973 live album “It's too Late to Stop Now” by Van Morrison. Neither of us is much of a Morrison fan, despite his passionate, improvisational vocals. Regarded as an energetic, spontaneous live experience, Morrison's vocal mannerisms illustrate why we don't think much of it. We also found a great documentary on-line called “Keep me in your Heart” about – surprise! - Warren Zevon. It captured Zevon in the last days before his death & showed why his fans loved him. We think you'll really love this episode! ALICE COOPER, the Godfather of Shock Rock returns! In this riff-soaked episode, Team Derringer welcomes lifelong Alice Cooper fangirl Kathy Derringer to trace the Godfather of Shock Rock from his Phoenix-area origins through his chart-smashing heyday. IN THIS EPISODE The Band's Wild Origin Story: From Phoenix high school act to the Earwigs, then Spiders, Nazz, and finally Alice Cooper. As we know, nu-metal is not exactly a genre filled with smart guys. But as far as dumb guys in the scene go, Jared Leto might take the cake. A man who sure has a lot of ideas about space, life, and the human struggle, this debut album has potentially the most insane lyrics we've ever heard and the interviews back up all the insanity. We aren't sure if Jared Leto has ever had a cohesive thought in his life, but he sure believes he has, and ultimately, that's what counts. The music surprises us by being not that terrible, but that was probably inevitable given it was produced by Bob Ezrin and given a ton of major label backing. But don't worry, the guys in the band actually started this whole thing with slow and steady growth, and it's the only reason they got popular. Their movie star lead singer had no impact on their first tour being in arenas. Nope, not at all. It's an album tailor-made for the show. We cover a lot of other albums tailor-made for the show too over on our Patreon at patreon.com/thepodkast, where $4/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last month, we had our friend Riviera from the Nu-Metal Agenda on to discuss 12 Stones' debut album "12 Stones", which is a Christian Rock album that absolutely sounds like a Christian Rock album. Bassist Dennis Dunaway was—and is—one of the key figures in the 1970s rock band, Alice Cooper. That's right, the band Alice Cooper, which recorded seven albums between 1969 and 1973 (and had such hits as "I'm Eighteen" and "School's Out") before the singer Alice Cooper (nee Vince Furnier) went on to a successful solo career. Now the surviving members of the Alice Cooper band, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, have reunited to record their first album in 52 years, The Revenge of Alice Cooper. Dunaway, described by the singer as “one of the few true surrealists that I've ever met,” reflects on what it was like finally to write and record again as a group, with producer Bob Ezrin also back. Did old tensions resurface? What's the deal with the band touring—or not touring—to support this album? (Photo by Jenny Risher.)

In this face-painted, fire-breathing episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we drop the needle on KISS’s explosive 1976 album Destroyer—an album that marked a major leap forward in both sound and spectacle for the band that made rock ‘n’ roll larger than life. Following the success of Alive!, KISS took things to a new level with Destroyer, blending their signature hard rock swagger with polished production, orchestration, and unexpected emotional depth. Produced by Bob Ezrin (of Alice Cooper fame), Destroyer features timeless tracks like "Detroit Rock City," "Shout It Out Loud," "God of Thunder," and the band’s biggest hit, "Beth"—a piano-driven ballad that showed a softer side of the band and took them to the top of the charts. This was KISS at their most ambitious, theatrical, and sonically daring. In this episode, we explore the making of Destroyer, its critical and commercial impact, and how it cemented KISS as rock icons with a flair for spectacle and hooks. From pyrotechnics to power chords, this album helped define arena rock and inspired generations of fans to throw up the horns and shout it out loud. Join Dem Vinyl Boyz as we salute the painted legends of KISS and their genre-defining masterpiece, Destroyer—a record that doesn’t just rock... it detonates.

The legendary music producer Bob Ezrin has renounced his U.S. citizenship and moved home to Canada, saying he doesn't recognize America anymore. Matt Galloway talks to Ezrin about his decision; and to Peter Wall, who is organizing an “Elbows Up, Canada” rally to bring Canadians together in the face of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war and threats of annexation.
In this episode, Diamond and Mr. Zero from the legendary band The Kings return to discuss the bands legacy, their latest album and their new single, A Rose For Your Stone.
This week, a real cross section of artists, which speaks to the depth and diversity of our interview archive. First up is Pink Floyd. We have a short but interesting chat with David Gilmour from 1984 and he promotes his solo work, but also wrestles with the past and future of Pink Floyd. Then we have an awesome 1979 chat with legendary Canadian producer Bob Ezrin as he talks about Pink Floyd’s The Wall – and as many fans know, Bob was instrumental in the creation of that album – and he has lots to say about it – from the development of the theme, to Roger Waters’ LACK of musical imagination (at least at the outset) to the planning of the ambitious tour that was to follow. Fascinating stuff from a guy who’s NOT afraid to share his opinions. Then we have a chat with Chad Kroeger and the guys from Nickelback from 2014. This was around the time that the whole backlash against them was just starting to heat up. They address it head on – and do a very good job too! Then we travel back to 2004 with Gwen Stefani, upon the release of her first solo album. Gwen is a bundle of energy who cannot be contained – and you can hear the passion, emotion and even insecurity that drives her. We also have a short but fun segment with the Black Eyed Peas from 2005 – a boy did THEY ever own the charts in that decade. We also remember the classic ‘60s Girl Groups, with cool facts from the amazing book “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” Our favourite story is about the vocal group that you’ve likely heard thousands of times over the years, but never knew by name. Famous Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.
The Kings are a legendary Canadian rock band best known for their infectious blend of power pop and new wave sounds that dominated the airwaves in the early 1980s. Formed in the late 1970s, The Kings consist of lead vocalist and bassist Dave Diamond and guitarist and songwriter Mr. Zero. Their debut album, The Kings Are Here, was produced by renowned producer Bob Ezrin (known for his work with Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, and Kiss), and its success cemented their place in rock history. Over the years, The Kings have continued to perform and release music, thrilling audiences with their dynamic stage presence and timeless anthems. Join Dave Diamond and Mr. Zero on Dystopia Tonight for a dive into the stories behind the music, their journey through decades of rock and roll, and what keeps The Kings going strong after all these years!

After Welcome to My Nightmare, and especially a hit single with "Only Women Bleed", Alice Cooper as a solo artist was continuing the same success as he had with the band called Alice Cooper. The problem was that success was catching up with him in the form of alcoholism, sapping both his health and his creativity. Still, guitarist Dick Wagner and producer and keyboard player Bob Ezrin managed to keep Alice going through the end of the '70s. A second ballad, "I Never Cry", kept him on the charts, even if his second solo album was a warning of things to come.
Imagine you're sitting across from the greatest record producer of your age. A man who's made Alice Cooper a star, a man who turned your dinky record to a worldwide hit, and not just that... But this is Bob Ezrin, the man who helmed the creation of the greatest record of all time, The Wall. He's looking you in the eye and telling you it's time to reinvent yourselves with a concept record. Strap in for Kiss's most amazing mistake. Thanks!!!!!!

We also discuss: his collection of over 650 vintage guitars; his use of volume swells in his music (for example his solo in the title track to “Blues Deluxe,” the song that introduced me to his music); his approach to cover-songs such as “Sloe Gin” (originally written by Bob Ezrin & recorded by actor & singer Tim Curry) and “Prisoner” (originally recorded by Barbara Stresiand); his approach to unique live albums, including his latest release "Live At The Hollywood Bowl w/ Orchestra;” his release of "Better The Devil You Know" (a song he co-wrote with Journey's Jonathan Cain) to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of his “Different Shades Of Blue” album; his musical / career expiration date; his Journeyman LLC venture, which is currently focused on Joanne Shaw Taylor & Robert Jon & The Wreck, and more! This week Tom & Zeus celebrate their 300th episode with their review of the 1976 legendary album from KISS, "Destroyer!" This was KISS' 4th studio album and the 24th and LAST KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. KISS was riding high after their live album "Alive" broke through and went gold. The power and energy of a live KISS show was the missing ingredient to get KISS their big break. Not wanting to rest on their recent success, the band brought producer Bob Ezrin from Alice Cooper fame in to help them "get to the next level." Ezrin was like no producer KISS ever had before or since. Bringing the best out of the members and co-writing 7 of the 9 tracks, Ezrin's fingerprints were all over Destroyer. Destroyer was very different then the previous raw three albums. This album had choirs, ghost players, a ballad, orchestras and even a calliope. The final result was KISS most commercial, critically acclaimed and perhaps polarizing album. The album features some of KISS most legendary songs, including, Detroit Rock City, God Of Thunder, Shout It Out Loud, Beth and more. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. There is no better way to celebrate Shout It Out Loudcast's 300th episode than with an album review of perhaps KISS' best album. Oh and don't miss the cameo congratulations from the band members (cough) on SIOL's 300th Episode! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Lions In The Street will be releasing a new album, Moving Along, on November 8, 2024. We sat down with lead vocalist Chris Kinnon to talk about the new album and the long road that got Lions In The Street to this point. They have quite an interesting back story. From hanging out with people like Todd Rundgren and Bob Ezrin, being signed to a couple of record labels but then having things fall apart, then being blacklisted in the music industry, and a lot of other mishaps, the band persevered and now have a new album for us all to enjoy. Their story inspires us all to keep going no matter how hard the road. Chris shares the whole story during our conversation and we play two songs from the upcoming album! Rock and Roll music (and conversation) that DESERVES to be heard!

The BlahBum Bunch has been called to order to debate the merits of the most critically-panned album of KISS' career, “The Music Of The Elder.” BlahBum members Corey Taylor of CMFT, Slipknot & Stone Sour fame, guitarist Zach Throne, and Chris Jericho question the album sequencing, and scratch their heads over songwriting, production, players, and even the cover art. They talk about Ace Frehley's minimal contribution and imminent departure, the arrival of Eric Carr on drums, and the return of Bob Ezrin to the producer seat. They've got some fantastic trivia about The Elder movie that never happened, the music videos that never released, and Paul Stanley's text response when asked about “Music from The Elder.” And like almost every other member of the KISSArmy, they have plenty of theories and thoughts about the impact this particular album had on the direction of KISS' career and future at the time.
