In the spring of 1977, the Rolling Stones put on two surprise club shows in Toronto. But meanwhile, RCMP officers broke into Keith Richards' hotel room, and discovered heroin. The ensuing criminal trial led to a very unusual verdict: the band had to put on a charity concert for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Why for them? Largely due to the testimony of a Quebec Stones fan. Randy Renaud has the whole tale on this week's edition of the Chronicles of Rock.
This week, Steve picked two sets of songs about years. In this show you will hear songs from the artists: Howard Jones, Nushu, Cults, New Order, Joey Ramone, Phoenix, April Wine, The Krispies, Inhaler, David Bowie, Arctic Monkeys, Imperial Drag, Caesars, Cast, The Black Keys, The Primitives. This week, part three of our celebration of ‘70s rock! Our previous two episodes consisted of interviews that, for the most part, had not been heard on our show before. But we realized that there were also a number of artists that people were asking about… like Aerosmith, Heart, April Wine… and to the chagrin of Christopher and the joy of Tom… KISS!What we’re going to do is take highlights from those previous episodes and play the best parts. And we’ll tell you where you can find the original interviews. It’s a continuation of the ‘70s rock series but almost like a greatest hits package.Included in this episode is the brutal rivalry between Aersomith and KISS, which at times got pretty ugly. Plus we have Steve Miller from his heyday and Tom Petty from around the time of his breakout album, Damn The Torpedoes. Lost Words, hosted by Christopher Ward and Tom Jokic, is heard in more than 100 countries worldwide and on radio stations across Canada, including Newstalk 1010 Toronto, CJAD 800 Montreal, 580 CFRA Ottawa, AM 800 CKLW Windsor, 610 CKTB St Catharines, CFAX Victoria, AM1150 Kelowna and 91x in Belleville. It is in the Top 20% of worldwide podcasts based on the number of listeners in the first week.

Myles takes us through the creation of "Tonight Is A Wonderful Time," revealing the key instrument that gives the song its unique sound.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

CHUM-FM producer, Famous Lost Words podcast host and friend of the show Tom Jokic makes his return to NSTS this week with a brand new angle. Tom does a segment on his podcast called "When Rock Stars Attack", a hilarious take on snippy-ish musician interviews found in the CHUM-FM and MuchMusic archives. Today he graciously shares some of these clips with us, featuring Simple Minds singer Jim Kerr, Jann Arden, April Wine's Myles Goodwyn, and a Beatles skirmish involving George Harrison and Paul McCartney. Lots of laughs and great conversation.

If you're looking for great Heartland Rock, a great choice would be the album Against the Wind. Depending on how you count it, it could be considered Bob Seger's eleventh studio album, but it is the third album of the iteration known as Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band. Seger is joined by Drew Abbott on guitar, Chris Campbell on bass, and David Teegarden on drums. The band became the Silver Bullet Band a bit by accident. They were arguing about what to call themselves, and the manager got tired of it. When they got paid the manager wrote the name "Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band" on the paycheck and the name stuck. Against the Wind was an immediate success. It went to number 2 on the Billboard 200 charts in its third week, and it sat there for 5 weeks, kepts out of the top slot by Pink Floyd's monster hit album, "The Wall." Finally, it topped "The Wall" to take the number 1 slot and remained there for six weeks, making it Bob Seger's most successful album in his career. There are a number of well known hits on this album, and an excellent collection of musicians as well. In addition to the Silver Bullet Band, Seger makes use of session musicians out of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, and is joined by backing vocals from members of the Eagles as well.Seger retired at the end of 2019, but he performed in 2023 at Patty Loveless's induction in to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, so we hold out hope that there will be some occasional performances still to come.Bruce presents this folksy heartland singer songwriter for this week's podcast.. Her StrutWhile not released as a single, this song received some airplau as the B-side to "The Horizontal Bop." Seger has been criticized for his adolescent humor in this song, but he claims that the inspiration for it was feminist activist Jane Fonda and her appearance before the Campaign for Economic Democracies.Against the WindBob Seger has written a number of songs about looking back on life, and the title track is an example of this. Seger was a cross country runner in high school, and he uses running as a metaphor for growing old. This song went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and he is joined by his friend and Eagles alumnus Glenn Frey for backing vocals.Fire LakeThis track is about taking risks, risking love, and just heading off with a bunch of wild people. Seger recorded this one at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. If the backing vocals sounds a lot like the Eagles, there is a reason for it - those backing vocalists are Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit. You'll Accomp'ny MeThis ballad is a little more country, with lyrics that basically say, "look, you may be playing the field now, but we both know in the end we'll be together." Little Feat co-founder Bill Payne joins Seger on this track to provide organ, synth, and piano parts. It hit number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sleepless Nights by Gram Parsons (from the motion picture "Cruising")Al Pacino starred in this crime thriller about a serial killer targeting gay men. STAFF PICKS:I Like to Rock by April WineWayne rocks out to start the staff picks with this Canadian band. April Wine formed in 1969, and have released over 20 albums. This song may be time stamped in the early 80's but it rocks out, and you can't beat lyrics like, "journey to the stars, Rock N Roll guitars!" Take the Long Way Home by SupertrampRob brings us one of the hits off Supertramp's multi-platinum album, "Breakfast in America." The lyrics to this one depict a couple growing apart as the husband starts staying away from home due to feeling like he's being ignored. It can also be a reflection of missed opportunities to live in alignment with your heart, and not being at peace with yourself.Rock With You by Michael JacksonLynch features a hit from MJ's disco album, "Off the Wall." Original lyrics were a bit more suggestive, but these were toned down to fit Jackson's wholesome image at the time. Rod Temperton wrote "Rock with You" as his first song for Jackson, setting the stage for more collaborations, including the iconic "Thriller." I Wanna Be Your Lover by PrinceBruce's staff pick is the lead single from Prince's self-titled second album, and his first major hit, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1980. Prince performs lead and backing vocals, and plays all instruments on this hit. The end of the track includes an extended instrumental jam which is edited out for the single. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Give It All You Got by Chuck Mangioni Flugelhorn player Mangioni wrote this song for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. This week heed the call of the sumo wrestling, battle-axe-wielding, baby seal-faced man! All hail Johnny the Mighty Tior!!! Yep, it's another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We're talking about a seminal New Wave Of “Not So” British Heavy band turned Power Metal trendsetters: RIOT! Infamous as much for horrible album cover visuals and weird heavy metal mascot, Riot is a true heavy metal tour de force that is still kicking ass in 2024. We focus our listening on the first half of their career from their start in 1977 until their transition to pure power metal in 1990. They were always slightly ahead of the curve and trends, but never achieved the success of many of their peers or bands they influenced. We think RIOT shoulda been huge!!!What is it that we do here at InObscuria? Well, we exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This episode covers a band clearly in the Lost category for most and forgotten for others. As always, we hope that we turn you on to something new. You can check out the documentary we referenced several times during the show here: three-part documentary: Riot – Fight or Fall, available here on Youtube Songs this week include:Riot – “Warrior” from Rock City (1977)Riot – “Road Racin'” from Narita (1979)Riot – “Don't Hold Back” from Fire Down Under (1981)Riot – “Loanshark” from Restless Breed (1982)Riot - “Born In America” from Born In America (1983)Riot – “Thundersteel” from Thundersteel (1988)Riot – “Little Miss Death” from The Privilege Of Power (1990)Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

RIP APRIL WINE's MYLES GOODWYN, THEN WE CHAT ABOUT RIDING IN SILENCE.
In this special episode, we pay tribute to the late Myles Goodwyn, the lead singer and songwriter of April Wine. Myles was seemingly in good health and spirits in late September as he and April Wine were inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame. Goodwyn was also inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall Of Fame. We feature two segments from the Famous Lost Words archives. First up is Tom's 2021 interview with Myles who told wonderful stories about the history of April Wine and their early struggles, first brush with fame, their feud with a famous rock critic, their gig with The Rolling Stones at the El Mocambo in Toronto - and their crossover success in the early '80s. He also talked about his latest music - and in particular one song that addresses the residential school crisis. We also feature a phone chat with Myles circa 1977 in which he talks about Canada's star system. Both segments capture Goodwyn's personality and deep love of music. Myles Goodwyn passed away on December 3, 2023 at the age of 75 in Halifax Nova Scotia.
Mainstreet looks back at the best of Myles Goodwyn and the amazing music he made with April Wine. Goodwyn, who lived in Halifax, died on Sunday.
In this 1381st episode of Toronto Mike'd, Mike remembers Myles Goodwyn who has passed away at the age of 75. You'll hear all about April Wine, how the Junos would snub them, and his recent solo work. It's like having The Beatles on Saturday's Mulligan Stew. But you can only have two. Do you want Ringo and Paul or George and John? Saturday our guests are Steven Page (BNL & Steven Page Trio) and Chris Murphy (Sloan). The other members of TCH are Moe Berg (Pursuit of Happiness) and Craig Northey (odds and SP Trio) Each leads his own group but they got together to sing covers of each other's music. Then the K-Tel idea came along. For younger music fans – K-Tel albums were Canadian hits crammed into 8 tracks, cassettes and albums. With garish labels that you couldn't miss in your local store or gasoline station. Great hits – horrid packaging. Which is why the guys covered the best hits and copied the artwork. Steven makes the point that they loved these hits because they were Canadian. They were ours. Our American friends had never heard these songs but to us they were Northern memories. They each take turns singing the lead vocal and back each other up. Covering hits by The Guess Who, Joni Mitchell, Paul Anka, April Wine, Bim (Roy Forbes), Lighthouse, Poppy Family etc. Complete interview on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and the video version on the TerryDavidMulligan YouTube Channel

Being in a band is hard...keeping a band together is harder still...and if a band can keep it together for more longer than a decade, they should get some kind of medal... Let's give props to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, still going since their establishment in 1983...Metallica has been with us since 1981...both new order and Depeche Mode go back to 1980... The current lineup of U2 has been the same since that day in March 1978 when they changed their name from “The Hype”...as they were doing their thing in Dublin, the cure was coming together in England... Pretty good...here are a few more longevity champions...Blondie, formed in 1974...Kiss, 1973...The Eagles, 1971...The Who, 1964...The Rolling Stones, 1962...The Beach Boys, 1961... Now let's look at just Canada...Sloan has been with us since 1991...The Tragically Hip, 1985...Loverboy, 1979...April Wine, 1969...Rush lasted a full 50 years before they broke up...they were formed in 1968...and we there's still a version of The Guess Who out there, maintaining a streak that started in 1965... I should also point out that the Nanaimo Concert Band has been a going concert since 1873—not with the original members, of course...there have been some lineup changes... Another name that needs to be added to this list is 54-40...they were established in 1980 and are still going...there have been some changes in personnel, but the core of the band is still intact, still touring, still recording, still on the radio.. They outlasted the original wave of punk, new wave, 80s hair metal, grunge, the resurrection of indie rock in the 2000s, the rise of the internet, the demise of music video channels, and—well, you get the idea... So this is as good a time as any to sit down with the band to let them talk about their decades in the Canadian music business...this is “54-40, in their own words, part 1” Learn more about your ad choices.
