Norris Howard is back from vacation and we just into talking about local stories around town. 01:39 - There's talk of moving the Detroit Auto Show again, back to the winter months as recent years haven't had the luster of before the pandemic. Norris makes the argument it's not about when, it's the lack of wow content, futurism and pizazz and that's what organizers should focus on as the real issue is CES in Las Vegas is about tech and cars are more about tech now.  Whether you agree or not, here's the whole piece by Carol Cain in the Freep to read all her other points, too: "4 questions key to Detroit keeping its Motor City nickname in 2024" - https://www.freep.com/story/money/business/columnists/carol-cain/2023/12/30/detroit-motor-city-nickname-auto-show-train-station-population-evs/72040007007/ 14:35 - We ran a poll in our newsletter asking if more people need to move to Michigan, and nearly 70% of you said yes. Norris argues that the efforts should be focused on adding to places like Detroit, and not so much communities that are resistant to building new buildings.  21:03 - Norris gets in on the predictions game, including that he thinks we're going to see the city of Detroit's first woman, black mayor. Choosing Your Battles Wisely with Carol Cain

“I would not go back and second guess the choices that I made back then, or now.” Carol Cain  Denise talks to Carol Cain, journalist, broadcaster, and Emmy award-winning producer, who earned her stripes in the business without the benefit of a news department at CBS. Since her third-grade teacher tasked her with being editor of the school paper, her course was set, and she's loved both the print and television sides of her professional career. She's been a reporter, columnist, editor, and host, on just about every major network there is. And she says none of it would have been possible without the loving support of her family and life partner Jim Stapleton.  Cain learned a valuable lesson early in her career when she turned down an opportunity because she didn't want to work with someone who had a wanton reputation. Rather than be labeled as a “troublemaker” had she tried to do something about it, she took a pass. “Sometimes you just have to say no.”  One right decision led to another as her career moved from journalist to broadcaster organically. Cain admits she was naïve in thinking that she'd be rewarded simply because she worked hard. Now she knows, and advises, the importance of networking and finding good mentors. Sometimes knowing the right person leads to opening doors you never thought of walking through.  Like Denise, Cain is one of seven children. Although unlike Denise, she is the youngest of her siblings and therefore, “listened a lot!” Cain says she's naturally inquisitive but has honed her interviewer skills over many years, putting herself into her audience's shoes—asking what she believes they most want to know.  Not surprisingly having worked in news media for so long, Cain's favorite Detroit moment weaves together the 1967 Detroit Riots and Detroit Tiger Willie Horton's courage and kindness.  Stay tuned to hear the one question Carol, ever the investigator, can't keep herself from asking Denise!  ***  Carol Cain, 13-time Emmy award-winning senior producer, is the host of "Michigan Matters," Detroit's highly-rated weekly public affairs show on CBS. She also hosts and produces CBS Detroit's "Eye on The Future" TV specials and has been nominated for a Peabody Award. Cain began her career at United Press International, the Toledo Blade and was a nationally syndicated columnist at The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press, where she continues to write a Sunday column. Cain has received numerous awards for her work and steadfast focus on diversity. A native Detroiter, Cain attended city public schools and earned a BA from Michigan State University and an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.  Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years.  As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world.  Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents, and a law degree from the University of Detroit Law School.  FOLLOW DENISE @thedeniseilitchshow  TO LEARN MORE about all our inspiring podcasts visit https://www.lifestough.com/.

292 | People of Persuasion: Travel influencers grow in sophistication and significance in COVID-19 age

For many hotel owners and operators, the term “influencer marketing” conjures up an image of a selfie-obsessed millennial who wants free room nights in exchange for some positive social media posts about her stay experience. Hoteliers often felt the so-called influencer took advantage of their hospitality and provided little return on the hotel's in-kind investment. In the COVID-19 age, those days are over. To be sure, influencers are not going away. In fact, their numbers and significance are growing as influencers become mainstream in the marketing world. Digitally savvy brand ambassadors can now be an important part of a hotel's strategic marketing campaign that seeks new ways to spread the message that the hotel is open, safe and ready to serve. In this episode, Lodging Leaders podcast peeks into the world of travel influencers and how they generate online content that promotes people, places and things to audiences traditional marketing might never reach. We feature Netanya Trimboli, founder and CEO of Travel Influencer Expert; Carol Cain, founder and CEO of Brave World Media, a branding agency, and founder of Girl Gone Travel, a travel influencer blog. And we speak to Brian King, global officer at Marriott International who is co-chairing a domestic travel campaign by the U.S. Travel Association called Let's Go There.

Carol Cain is a full-time travel blogger, but lives in New York City. She travels the world solo and writes about her adventures; often times they’ve been sponsored by companies. Oh, and by the way, she also has kids and a husband. Carol is proof you can get out there and travel, by yourself, even when you have a busy family to take care of. When Carol first traveled solo, at the young age of 17, she felt empowered. Carol has a serious travel bug, and doesn’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.   Key Takeaways: *When was Carol’s very first solo journey? *Carol travelled to Italy at the age of 17, and it was very empowering to be on her own and make mistakes. *Growing up in a very strict Latino household, Carol was always afraid she wasn’t living up to the expectations of others. *Carol also had to overcome a cultural barrier. Latinas don’t typically travel solo. *Carol has a husband and kids, and still travels solo. So many times strangers were worried about who was taking care of her kids while she was in a foreign country. *What does Carol do for work? *How does someone become a travel blogger? *Does Carol travel in groups when she goes on a sponsored trip? *Carol fell in love with Ireland and Scotland, and she’s going to be bringing her family this fall to see these countries! *What tips does Carol have for those who want to become a travel blogger? *Tell the truth, always. It can be easy to get sucked in and give an ungenuine review.   Mentioned in This Episode: Transformviatravel.com Transform via Travel on Facebook @GoSoloLive on Twitter Email: Jennifer@TransformviaTravel.com   Connect with Carol: Website   Leave a Review: Did you like this episode? She left a career in public relations before venturing into the world of travel blogging in 2008 and is often speaking on ways to improve brand and blogger relationships as well as raising awareness for increased diversity in media. Follow Carol on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. TIPS FOR VISITING NYC WITH KIDS Using the subway is a great way to get around the city while saving money. New York City uses a Metro Card system which has a bunch of different packages that you can use. For families it would be a good idea to get a card with 10 rides on it, which you can use for multiple people by swiping the card at the turnstile and passing it back to your next family member! You can also get a subway map for free at one of the main kiosks. They are also starting to add in digital maps in the subway stops, that show the tracks and stops. For first time visitors that want to see the iconic parts of New York, you should visit Midtown Manhattan. You will see Central Park, Hell's kitchen, the Theater District, and more that are all in walking distance. A great way to start your first time in NYC would be to take a walking tour or just any type of tour. You will get a sense of where you are while learning some historic facts about the city. Right next to Penn Station is a new high end food court. This is a great idea if you have a family that like different things, the kids can get a sandwich or burger while you have say Japanese cuisine. If you are flexible with your time and the show  you can go to the TKTS booth in Times Square to get discounted Broadway show tickets. BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO There is a park on Riverside Drive on the west side of Manhattan along the Hudson River that is a great spot. The sun sets there and the boat docks are really pretty. Another great spot is Top of the Rock, which offers a great view of the Empire State Building. You can also go online a schedule a time to go and just go right up without waiting. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Carol is very much a Skechers girl. She also loves her Lands End cargo pants. APP(s) OF THE WEEK Best Parking and Icon Parking are both a good way to save on parking. You can check and reserve spots in parking garages. Having a NYC Subway app is really helpful. History Here is an app by the History Channel that uses your location and give you a lot of historic insight into where you are. Eat St. Is an app that helps you find food trucks! But what about the personalities that ran those organizations, their policies and automotive journalism itself? To ponder these questions Autoline's host John McElroy takes a different seat on this week's panel as he turns the show over to WWJ62-Detroit host Carol Cain and joins veteran automotive journalists Edward Lapham from Automotive News (40 years in the business) and Tony Swan from Car and Driver/Kelly Blue Book (35 years) to discuss the changes they have seen over their years covering the auto industry.

MythologyThe Greek culture has given the world significant contributions in several areas. One of the more interesting is the bizarre mixture of heroes, villains, mortals and gods constructed, most experts say, to explain the mysteries of life. How ironic that so much of what we know as 'Greek Mythology' was centered around the ancient city of Delphi. Ironic because the Delphi we're familiar with today had its own mythology; a Tier One supplier born from General Motors in the '90s with a similar lineup of enigmatic characters who mysteriously turned a thriving company into a bankrupt one.For the last five years the corporation has struggled until it emerged from bankruptcy late last year. Led out by Rodney O'Neal, its current CEO and President who has been around the company since its GM years, Delphi today is much leaner and much less dependent on its former #1 customer. So equipped with a variety of new clients as well as fresh innovative electronic products, Mr. O'Neal believes that Delphi is ready to reclaim what it lost over these last few years, namely sales and market share. This week on Autoline Detroit John McElroy welcomes Rodney O'Neal of Delphi Automotive. Joining John on his panel are Tom Murphy from WardsAuto.com and Carol Cain of CBS Television Detroit.
