Budget travel to London can be achieved with careful planning and smart choices. Staying in budget hotels like Easy Hotel can save money on accommodation. Many of London's top museums and attractions are free to visit. Using public transportation like the Tube and buses is cost-effective for getting around London. Eating at fast food chains or local takeaways can help maintain a budget for meals. Look for set menu options at restaurants for affordable dining experiences. Discount tickets for West End shows can be found at the TKTS desk in Leicester Square. Exploring local grocery stores for breakfast and snacks can save money. Independent used bookstores offer affordable options for book lovers in London. Sound Bites "The next goal is 300 members. And if we reach the target of 300 members, we will remove the Google ads from Londontopia.net our sister website dedicated to all things London, which has been around almost as long as Anglotopia has." "You can do so for the cost of two cups of tea. It's six dollars a month and you get billed every month on the first or you can save 10% by subscribing for the year. It's $64 for the year." "$200 a day is a lot and I think that's not that's more of mid-range than budget. So I set out in my mind to to lay out a trip to see if you could do it on $100 a day." "Just because you want to do it on a budget or do it on the cheap doesn't mean you're going to have a bad time. Does it mean that you can't enjoy London, London at its best? London is such a great city that there's so much to see and do that's completely free." "My recommendation is to stay in one of the cheapest possible chain hotels that is on the market. And it's called the Easy Hotel." "You know, even as a 41 year old man who is used to staying in nicer hotels at this age, I'd still consider the easy hotel, especially if I was on a tight budget." "This is actually a really easy way to save money because a lot of London's big museums are actually completely free." "There is plenty to see and do without doing the special exhibitions. There's, you know, at least I want to say I haven't done an exact count recently, but there's at least 100 museums in London that are completely free." "It doesn't cost anything to sit in Trafalgar Square and people watch and watch the fountains and the let the world go by or to stand in Parliament Square and wait for Big Ben to chime, or to walk along the Thames South Bank and watch London go by." "As long as you have an Oyster card or you do contact lists, you're never going to pay more than the max daily tube fare, which is eight pounds 90, which is about ten dollars." "In addition to the tube, a much cheaper option is the London's bus network. That's what people use every day to commute because the max pay as you go fare for the buses is only £1.75, which is about $2." "Since there's no tipping in Britain, the price you pay for the set course dinner is the price you pay for the meal." "My travel hack is to go to the TKTS desk in Leicester Square and that's for same day ticket discounts. Most of the London theaters kind of participate in this." Stepping outside of school hours Hello, lovely listeners. I want to let you know about a bit of a change. This podcast is now the Kate Toon Show. Yes, I've finally embraced having my own name in the title of my podcast. Why? Because I'm a huge, egotistical beast. No, the reality is with so many different brands and books and stories to tell, I needed an overarching name for the show that allowed me to talk about all the various bits and bobs. So what is the Kate Toon Show? Well, I'm here to help you build a successful, profitable, and enjoyable business using smart, creative, simple digital marketing and business tactics. Now, whether that's creating passive income streams, juggling your real life with your business life, being a misfit or passing on smart marketing tips, I'm here to help. In this next series, we'll be talking more about Six Figures While You Sleep, how to create automated digital passive income products, such as courses, memberships, masterminds, and digital downloads. But I also want to be able to talk about all the other things I love. We can talk about whatever we want, but the whole goal of it is to show you different and interesting ways to build a brand that you love, that you're proud of, and that serves the life that you want to live. It may be slightly unconventional compared to other businessey typey, coachy, mentory people, but it's going to be my way and hopefully we'll have a giggle along the way. There'll still be guests, there'll still be tips. The Kate Toon Show is coming. Get your ear holes ready. Experiencing a Broadway show should be on everyone's NYC bucket list. The talent is top-notch, the theaters are phenomenal, and the experience is unparalleled. In this episode, we're gonna break down some NYC Broadway tips that will make your experience both more enjoyable, and cheaper! Best Way to Get Broadway Tickets TKTS Booth If you wanna do the Times Square TKTS booth (Broadway & 47th), you get the fast pass if you have a ticket from the previous day to skip the often 1+ hour long line! There's usually a shorter line at the Lincoln Center booth (Columbus & 62nd), and sometimes different inventory than Times Square. TKTS booth doesn't have every show, so if you're deadset on Wicked, for example, then buy beforehand. You'll pay about the same price as apps or ticket sites the day of, but you'll have much better seats. Often in the orchestra (lower) section. The app shows an inventory of each location, but it's not always exact. Other Ticket Providers TodayTix is great if you plan up to a month ahead. You can also use broadway.com, Viator, or ticket providers like Vivid Seats or Ticketmaster, etc. At the Show You always go through security, so don't bring weapons like pepper spray... If you forget, sometimes they'll hold it for you but don't bank on that. You can usually bring snacks in, just be respectful about it and open them before the show starts. Bring a jacket, the theaters are usually really cold even in the summer. Don't use your phone at all, it ruins shows. Please don't sing along. If you need to use the restroom during intermission, leave as soon as the intermission starts. Lines are long, always! Don't use the pedicabs when you're leaving the show. Just don't don't do it. You'll get price gouged. Above all, enjoy the experience! Subscribe to our newsletter to get all the updates on new episodes, articles, and guides! https://rebrand.ly/newsletter-bth

Victoria Bailey, Executive Director of the Theatre Development Fund (TDF), speaks with Hal about making the arts welcoming for all audiences. She and Hal discuss the beauty of a child’s first visit to Broadway, how producers can support contemporary American playwrights, and the healing power of storytelling. Victoria Bailey has been the executive director of TDF since 2001. The not-for-profit organization is dedicated to bringing the performing arts to everyone. TDF sustains live theatre and dance by engaging and cultivating a broad and diverse audience and eliminating barriers to attendance and envisions a world where the transformative experience of attending live theatre and dance is essential, relevant, accessible, and inspirational. TDF fulfills its mission by expanding access through ticketing, accessibility, and information initiatives; by cultivating communities through school and community engagement programs and by supporting theatre makers through training, professional development programs, and national audience research. Highlights of Ms. Bailey’s tenure included playing a key role in the construction of the award winning new TKTS booth at Duffy Square, expansion of TDF’s award winning education programs, and the introduction of sensory friendly Broadway performances. Ms. Bailey recently completed a national research project in co-partnership with Brad Erickson from Theatre Bay Area titled Triple Play, examining ways to strengthen the relationship between playwrights, theatres, and audiences as a means to increase audience appetite for new and risky work. Previously, she was instrumental in the execution of a comprehensive study of the lives of American playwrights and the production of new American Plays. The study culminated in Outrageous Fortune: The Life and Times of the New American Play. Prior to her appointment at TDF, she had a nearly 20-year association with Manhattan Theatre Club. Ms. Bailey is Theatre Management and Producing Advisor and Adjunct Professor at the School of the Arts at Columbia University, and a member of the board at the Times Square Alliance. She recently completed a three-year term on the Tony Awards Nominating Committee. Ms. Bailey received a B.A. in history from Yale College. TDF is the only not-for profit organization dedicated to serving the entire spectrum of the performing arts with programs that touch the lives of millions of New Yorkers and visitors each year. (Perhaps even some Dora The Explorer footage :)) The show airs July 23rd at 3pm EDT and can be viewed on Christina’s Facebook page or via Youtube (YouTube Link Here ) -- In her own words, if you have the means, Christina would love you to support; 'TDF - my upcoming live stream show will benefit them. This organisation is all to often forgotten about! The Theatre Development Fund is a not-for-profit organisation that has been an essential part of of NYC theatre and dance for over 50 years. Through outreach, various discount ticket programs, organising performances for those with disabilities & so much more, they’ve helped break down the barriers to theatre attendance for nearly 2 million people each year. They also founded and operate the TKTS booths. In short, TDF is one of the main reasons Americans from across the country and tourists from around the world can attend and afford to see live theatre. Without any shows up and running, and without the funds raised from their annual gala which they were forced to cancel (and I was supposed to perform at), this organisation is in dire need of help. And NY theatre will be in dire need of their help when things get back up and running. So we have to support them now in any way we can. New York City — 1977 — “back in the day” — when Studio 54 was all the rage and the new TKTS half-price tickets booth on 47th Street and Broadway was still bright-eyed and bushy tailed. When my rent at the infamous and sometimes dangerous, Hotel Woodward was $55 a week, and I had to figure out a way to pay it. As you'll hear, I was ingenious, and perhaps a little criminal, in the way I did so, but that's what's interesting about time travel, it allows you to look back on your life with perspective… letting you see the innocence and error of youth…. hopefully with a sense of humor. https://erictrules.com/episode38

She left a career in public relations before venturing into the world of travel blogging in 2008 and is often speaking on ways to improve brand and blogger relationships as well as raising awareness for increased diversity in media. Follow Carol on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. TIPS FOR VISITING NYC WITH KIDS Using the subway is a great way to get around the city while saving money. New York City uses a Metro Card system which has a bunch of different packages that you can use. For families it would be a good idea to get a card with 10 rides on it, which you can use for multiple people by swiping the card at the turnstile and passing it back to your next family member! You can also get a subway map for free at one of the main kiosks. They are also starting to add in digital maps in the subway stops, that show the tracks and stops. For first time visitors that want to see the iconic parts of New York, you should visit Midtown Manhattan. You will see Central Park, Hell's kitchen, the Theater District, and more that are all in walking distance. A great way to start your first time in NYC would be to take a walking tour or just any type of tour. You will get a sense of where you are while learning some historic facts about the city. Right next to Penn Station is a new high end food court. This is a great idea if you have a family that like different things, the kids can get a sandwich or burger while you have say Japanese cuisine. If you are flexible with your time and the show you can go to the TKTS booth in Times Square to get discounted Broadway show tickets. BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO There is a park on Riverside Drive on the west side of Manhattan along the Hudson River that is a great spot. The sun sets there and the boat docks are really pretty. Another great spot is Top of the Rock, which offers a great view of the Empire State Building. You can also go online a schedule a time to go and just go right up without waiting. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Carol is very much a Skechers girl. She also loves her Lands End cargo pants. APP(s) OF THE WEEK Best Parking and Icon Parking are both a good way to save on parking. You can check and reserve spots in parking garages. Having a NYC Subway app is really helpful. History Here is an app by the History Channel that uses your location and give you a lot of historic insight into where you are. Eat St. Is an app that helps you find food trucks! Victoria Bailey is executive director of Theatre Development Fund (TDF), the only not-for profit organization dedicated to serving the entire spectrum of the performing arts with programs that touch the lives of millions of New Yorkers and visitors each year. Its TKTS booths and its membership, education, subsidy, access and dance programs all further its core mission. Ms. Bailey was also instrumental in the execution of a comprehensive study of the lives of American playwrights and the production of new American Plays. Listen in as Tory, one of the most powerful people in the biz, thanks to the millions of dollars TDF generates for Broadway and Off Broadway shows, talks about all things TDF and more like: The origins of the TKTS booth and what’s next for “the trailer” (and how did it get that name anyway?). The kind of theater that excites her, and where she thinks shows are headed in the future (and she’s a Tony Nominator, so listen in folks). What happened to Audience Development Directors? Why Commercial Producers like me need non-profit institutions like TDF (and it ain’t about the booth). Where TDF will be in 20 years. Episode 26: Youtube Fireside Chat. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof Craig and Lindsay are off to New York this week! On Stitcher. Episode Transcript Lindsay: Welcome to TFP, The Theatrefolk Podcast. I'm Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello. I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. Today, it's the first YouTube Fireside Chat of 2013, woop, woop! But first, let's do some Theatrefolk news. Okay, so last week in the Theatrefolk news, I talked about going to the Arkansas Thespian Festival, only I didn't call it the Arkansas Thespian Festival. I called it the Ar-kan-sas Thespian Festival, and I'm sure that if you're from Arkansas, hearing something called Ar-kan-sas is unsatisfying. So I just wanted to say that, yes, I do know it's Arkansas, and I just get things flipped and turned around sometimes, and I apologize. So that's news number one. News number two is that we've got new plays, two new plays, so fresh from the printers they've still got new play smell to them. The first is a lovely sendup of Lord of the Flies by playwright Clint Snyder, who is a new-to-Theatrefolk playwright—love that—and it's called Lord of the Pies. When Franny cannot open the door out of the pie shop, anarchy, the apocalypse, Scotch tape, and a talking lemon pie all converge in one great piece of pie, of course. And then we have one of my plays, yay! I'm doing jazz hands for those of you who don't have the visual part of a podcast, [laughs] which is everybody. And this is a new play of mine, it's called Backspace. And in this play, for the characters, to write is to go to war, and ideas resist with every fiber of their being. It's imagistic. It explores personification in a vivid theatrical manner – where else can you bring a typewriter to life? And it's been through a really long journey to get to this point. And I have to say I'm pretty thrilled with its theatricality, and I know and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, it will be an awesome competition piece…of pie? Of course. Lastly, where, oh where can you find this podcast? We post new episodes every Wednesday at Theatrefolk.com and on our Facebook page and on our Twitter page, and you can find us on the Stitcher app, and you can subscribe TFP on iTunes. All you have to do is search on the word “Theatrefolk.” Hello, here we are. It is Craig. Craig, hello. Craig: And Lindsay. Lindsay: And me! And the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is oh so delightful. [Laughs] Craig: For the YouTube Fireside Chat! Lindsay: Woo-hoo! We're cozied up in front of the computer with mugs of hot coco and a thick computer-generated fire. It's the first YouTube Fireside Chat of 2013. This week, actually today, the day that this podcast is going to be posted, where are we going, Craig? Craig: New York. Lindsay: Yay! That's right. So when we go see shows in the Big Apple, Craig, you can verify this, unless we're…it's something dead set on seeing, like Follies, we don't have a plan. We don't buy tickets in advance. We just go to the TKTS booth and see what's playing, and wing it from there, right? Craig: Yeah, that's the fun of it, I think, because there's so much to do and so much going on that it's just fun to go and just pick something on a whim and go. It's very spontaneous. Lindsay: Uh-huh. So for this chat,
Broadway Bullet: Theatre from Broadway, Off-Broadway and beyond.
We get a chance to talk to the touring company of Sweeney Todd. Michael goes On the Scene at TKTS to see what shows are the hot ticket. We also talk with the artistic director and producing director of Coyote Rep about their free, online sound plays.
