From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, July 5th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Great Locomotive Chase Soldiers Receive Posthumous Medals of Honor In 1863, the first U.S. Army Medals of Honor were awarded to soldiers from the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War. On Wednesday, the final two raiders, Privates George D. Wilson and Philip G. Shadrach, received their posthumous medals in a White House ceremony led by President Joe Biden. ***JOE BIDEN*** These Union volunteers seized a Confederate train near Big Shanty, Georgia, aiming to destroy rail lines and hinder Confederate supply routes. Disguised as civilians, they embarked on a daring 90-mile mission, only to be caught and later executed. Their bravery was long overlooked, but Civil War historian Brad Quinlin fought for over a decade to secure this honor. Here are family members of Privates Shadrach and Wilson on what the awards mean to their family: ***FAMILY MEMBERS*** Today, The General locomotive rests at the Southern Museum in Kennesaw, while The Texas is housed at the Atlanta History Center. Visitors can also explore a replica of the raiders' planning room at the Marietta History Center. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. On this episode of the Hospitality Leaders podcast, I'm joined by Sheffield Hale, President and CEO of the Atlanta History Center. In recent years it seems that public discourse has become more uncivil, especially after two very stressful years of a pandemic. Sheffield often has an uncomfortably close look at this incivility, as Atlanta itself is a city rich in complex and often divisive history. Placing that sensitive subject matter into a hospitality setting, where difficult guests can be routine, would seem to be a recipe for disaster. Sheffield, however, uses his position to create the opportunity to return to a more civil culture. With strict rules for his guests about how to engage the staff and each other, buy-in from his team, and a robust support system for employees who are put in difficult situations, the Atlanta History Center is a place where the best parts of education and hospitality are allowed to shine. Sheffield makes himself available for constant feedback from his frontline workers, and has a zero-tolerance policy for guests who break the agreed-upon “Rules of Civility.” With such a well-constructed framework for dealing with difficult situations, Sheffield and his team are often able to stop incivility before it begins. Here, members participate in preserving Boone's story, promoting the history of his era, and sharing both his legacy and heritage. Mary's passion for the outdoors goes all the way back to her adventures as a child, many of which involved cooking whatever nature offered that evening by the campfire. “Cooking on the fireplace,” Mary contends, “is a common denominator for drawing people.” She first entered the world of interpretive cooking in the mid-1980s when she enrolled in a day-long class at what was then called the Atlanta Historical Society (today known as the Atlanta History Center.) Mary often cooks at the Replica Daniel Boone Cabin at Whippoorwill Academy & Village, channeling Daniel's wife Rebecca whenever she does so. She says that putting herself in Mary's shoes, so to speak, brings the entire historical experience in that cabin to life like nothing else. Says Mary: “You can read about something in a book or look at pictures. But when you actually put your hands on it and go through the motions, there's a connection.” To her, it's a connection with a way of living that no longer exists, one which brings it back to the present and infuses meaning into the work in much the same way as those in the past found it meaningful.
