From a young age, Oklahoma native Rachael Gruntmeir was always extremely creative. By the time she was two, she was able to use scissors and cut straight lines, incidentally leading to many an interesting self-inflicted haircut. As that two year-old, one of Rachael's favorite activities was to complete her favorite 100 piece Barbie puzzle. By four she learned how to use a sewing machine. She would sit on her mother's lap because she couldn't reach the pedal. By the time she entered kindergarten, Rachael was cutting and sewing entirely on her own. In college at Oklahoma State University, Rachael realized she still craved a more hands-on, creative field in which to work, so she moved to Oklahoma City and began attending the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). While at UCO she was selected to participate in the elite Charles Evans Studio where she was able to refine her design skills and complete her portfolio. While attending the university, Rachael would take excursions abroad with her mentor, Buffy Hughes, to study design even further in places such as Italy and France. This is where Rachael discovered her true love for other cultures, people and unique ways in which people all over the world design their own spaces. Since college, Rachael has pursued a successful career as a creative and interior designer in Oklahoma working on several residential and commercial jobs. She is also passionate about giving back and contributing to make her community a better place. Rachael serves on the board for Midtown Association (2016 – Current) and is a member of the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce (2016 – Current). Pivot to Homeschooling with Beth Brown and Keri Knutson

Green Gab Podcast – Green Homes, Green Living and Green Companies

Life has changed in so many different ways for everyone as a result of the global pandemic, particularly in the area of schooling, which has become a big issue for most parents. So I invited Beth Brown and Keri Knutson to join me today to talk about some solutions.  Beth and Keri both have children in school, and they have been doing a lot of work to solve the current problems around schooling. They are with me today to share what they are learning and experiencing and to talk about the innovative ideas that they have come up with for educating children in the best way possible under the present circumstances.  About Beth Beth is a creative person, and she has a background in interior design. She is currently involved in social media management, and she works from home as a virtual assistant.  This year, she has decided to home-school one of her children. About Keri Keri is a teacher by trade, and she has been working in different capacities in the field of education for the last seventeen years. For most of that time, she has been teaching children from kindergarten to second grade in public school. She has also taught preschool, and, for the past eight years, she has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO). Keri has three kids at home, and right now, she is taking a break from public school teaching to work on her doctorate. Conversations about schooling Beth and Keri live in the same neighborhood. There have been several neighborhood meetings held there recently, to talk about the changes that are happening in the school district and the different ways that everyone is choosing to deal with the current situation.  Two main options for parents Three months ago, most of the parents in the Deer Creek School District got two main options for schooling. The first is that the children can return to school in August. And if any incidences of COVID occur in the schools, they can return to doing distance learning for as long as necessary. The second option is for parents to keep their children at home, and go ahead with virtual schooling for the whole semester. A third option A third option was offered to the parents of children from the seventh grade upwards. That is for an academy, where children from the seventh to the twelfth grades can do a blended school option. That means that they can do certain things, like band and special science classes, on the school campus, and everything else can get done at home. Things vary in different places around the country Things are different, however, in different districts, and different areas around the country.  A split schedule Schools in Beth and Keri’s area have now decided to opt for a split schedule based on state recommendations, to ensure that proper social distancing can take place if necessary. That means that if they reach an orange level, as determined by the Department of Health, they will create a split schedule so that only half of all the students are present in the school building at any given time.  The underlying issue The underlying issue is that parents are trying to do what is best for their children, while also juggling their work and their lives at home. There is a lot to consider, and even more to be done, and it can all feel very frightening and overwhelming.  Beth’s decision Beth has two children at home. Her daughter is thirteen, and, like most of the other kids of her age, she wants to go back to school full-time, so Beth is allowing her to do that.  Beth has decided, however, to keep her second-grader at home, and go a hundred percent virtual with his schooling. Although she does not relish the idea, she has chosen to embrace her role as a parent, to have a great attitude, and to make the best of a difficult situation. Lots of options There are lots of options, and ultimately it is up to the parents to weigh them all up and make the best decision for their children and themselves. Bear in mind that things always go better with a positive attitude! Leaders at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) have accomplished something rare. They’ve tackled the structural and cultural challenges to developing, scaling, and measuring a co-curricular program -- while ensuring faculty buy-in. UCO President Emeritus Don Betz and UCO’s Student Transformative Learning Record (STLR) Executive Director, Jeff King, reflect on how their curricular and co-curricular approach to the student journey is expanding perspectives, deepening agency, and improving employability for UCO students. It’s a shift from course content mastery to an institution-wide focus on transformative learning, and the result is infectious.

Welcome to episode 460 of Moving at the Speed of Creativity by Wesley Fryer, from March 13, 2018. This podcast features a series of three recent interviews, and opens with a recommendation to try the newly updated Anchor.fm website and Anchor mobile app for podcast creation and publishing. The first interview is with high school senior Sarah Fryer, who shares her experiences and lessons learned taking concurrent classes from the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) and the Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) as a student in Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS). Sarah took two classes from UCO in fall 2017, including one online course and one face-to-face course at the UCO campus in downtown Oklahoma City. This spring Sarah is taking two concurrent classes from OCCC, again one online and another face-to-face. The second interview is with Eric Ebert (@biggestmeow), the high school computer science teacher at Casady School. Eric shares a little about the growth of the computer science program at Casady, and how he has been using GitHub and GitHub classroom to help his students manage their coding projects. Eric also shared how he's used audio podcasts created with Garageband and SoundCloud to encourage student reflection during and at the conclusion of coding projects. The third interview is with Shelly Fryer (@sfryer), a 3rd grade teacher at Casady School who has been integrating coding into her language arts lessons and Maker Studio time using the iPad app PBSkids Scratch Junior. Shelly taught an after-school class for 3rd and 4th graders in fall 2017 on coding with PBSkids Scratch Junior, teaching students how to create animations, tell stories, and create simple games. In spring 2018, Shelly has taught the same after-school class on PBSkids Scratch Junior for first and second graders. She has also co-led an after-school coding class using Scratch software for third and fourth graders. She shares stories and lessons learned from these coding classes, and also highlights her recent experiences at a Code.org workshop in San Antonio as one of three coding Ambassadors from Oklahoma. Please refer to the podcast shownotes for links to referenced resources and student projects from this podcast.
