We are celebrating National Athletic Training Month and we have two VERY special guests with us today. Our friends, and Athletic Trainers, Micki Collins and Ryan Green. Micki Collins serves as LSU's Director of Sports Medicine. As LSU's Associate Athletic Director/Director of Sports Medicine, Collins oversees healthcare for LSU's 450 student-athletes as well as managing the athletic department's sports medicine team, which includes 25 athletic trainers, more than 10 physicians, massage therapists, chiropractors, and physical therapists. Ryan Green serves as an Associate Professor and Athletic Training Program Director at Southeastern Louisiana. He has been a certified athletic trainer since 1997. Ryan and Micki discuss the important role that athletic trainers play in the sports world. Tune in!

Today's episode features Dr. Mary Ellen Pethel. Dr. Pethel is an author, historian, archivist, and digital humanist. She is an Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and Global Education at Belmont University. Mary Ellen was a five-sport high school athlete at Rome High School in Rome, GA and played basketball at Berry College. In 1996, she transferred to the University of Tennessee and joined the history honors program where her senior thesis (on women's sports from 1897 to 1917) won best thesis award. While teaching and coaching tennis, softball, and basketball) at the high school level, Mary Ellen earned her Master's degree in Education from Berry College in 2001 and began the PhD program at GA State University, graduating in 2009. Mary Ellen completed a Post-grad certificate in Digital Humanities from George Mason University. Prior to her appointment at Belmont, Dr. Pethel taught in the Social Science Department at Harpeth Hall School in Nashville. Mary Ellen has written five books: Athens of the New South; A Heartfelt Mission; All-Girls Education from Ward Seminary to Harpeth Hall; and her latest book which we will be discussing today: Title IX, Pat Sumitt, and Tennessee's Trailblazers: 50 Years, 50 Stories. Meet Carol Persson!! Carol grew up in New Jersey, lived in Massachusetts for 29 years, retired to North Carolina for 8 years and moved to Florida this past June 2022. Carol attended Slippery Rock University where she received a BS in Physical Education; then earned her Master's at Montclair State University in New Jersey, then her doctorate in Physical Education from Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. Carol spent 26 years at Westfield State University serving as Vice President of Enrollment Management; Department Chair of Movement Science, Sport & Leisure Studies; Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and Professor of Movement Science. Carol was President of AAHPERD in 1994-1995 and served on what appears to be every committee AAHPERD had! Carol served Eastern District as President in 1989-1990 and, again, served in what had to be every possible Board and Committee position in the Eastern District! She also served at the state level in Massachusetts AHPERD and New Jersey AHPERD. We consider Carol a TRUE LEGEND!!!
Meet Ben Kern. Ben received his Doctor of Philosophy in 2017 from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His Principal Licensure was completed in 2002 and his BA in 1999 in Kinesiology K-12 Physical Education. Currently, Ben is the Program Coordinator of the Physical Education Teacher Education in the Division of Kinesiology & Health at the University of Wyoming. Ben is a Board member for Wyoming Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (WAHPERD) and previously served on the Board of Directors for Louisiana AHPERD. Ben spoke to us regarding the US Physical Education and Physical Activity Policy Project-- a project that is important for all those involved in physical education and physical activity. Tecca Kilmer and Kim Gerlich are middle school physical education teachers at Turkey Creek Middle School in Plant City, Florida. Tecca has served Southern District on the Leadership council, the Southern District Advocacy Committee, and the Southern District LMAS state coordinator chair. She is also a Past-President of SHAPE Florida. She represented SHAPE America as one of the TOY's that was invited to work with NASA to develop Train Like an Astronaut curriculum/materials. Kim has served on numerous committees for SHAPE Florida and Southern District. Coach D-D Breaux retired in 2020 after 43 years as head coach of the LSU Gymnastics team. An excellent athlete in her own right, Breaux was a nationally-ranked gymnast by both the A.A.U. and the U.S.G.F. and she was also a Junior Olympic National Champion. A native of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, Breaux attended Southeastern Louisiana University where she competed for the Lady Lions gymnastics team for two seasons and helped SLU to a second-place finish at the 1972 AIAW Championships. She has been named the SEC Coach of the Year on nine occasions, NCAA Central Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and in the summer of 2009, Breaux received one of the highest honors as she was voted into the USA Gymnastics Region 8 Hall of Fame. D-D was recognized as the National Gymnastics Coach of the Year in 2014 and again in 2017. Coach Breaux chats with us about leadership, coaching, Title IX, mental health, and fishing!!! Tune in!!

Served as president for: International Council for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport, and Dance (ICHPER-SD) American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). Served as vice president for the United States Collegiate Sports Council COACHING: Coached women's gymnastics at Springfield College where her teams were undefeated in dual meet competition and won three Division I national championships. Coached the USA Gymnastics Team for the World University Games Served as a sport psychology consultant to the USA Olympic Field Hockey Team, the USA Olympic Equestrian Team, and numerous professional, collegiate, and high school athletes and coaches. A few of her many honors inclue: Ethics Fellow of the International Institute for the Study of Sport Luther Halsey Gulick Award from AAHPERD R. Tait McKenzie Award Honor Awards from AAHPERD, ICHPER-SD, and NAGWS. Degrees from University of Florida and University of Maryland Professor Emeritus, Jacksonville State University, 2011-current President of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (now SHAPE America) Vice-President of the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA) Chair of the Board of Easter Seals Alabama's Special Camp for Children and Adults (Camp ASCCA) Chair of the China Research Center on Sports for Persons with Disabilities International Advisory Council. Served on the board of directors for the National Easter Seal Society, National Consortium for Physical Education and Recreation for Handicapped, Special Olympics Alabama, and the Easter Seal Society of Alabama. Fellow of the SHAPE America Research Consortium, International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity, and the North American Society of HPERD Professionals. COACHING: Competed at the collegiate level in tennis, held officials and head referee certification from the USTA, and was previously a tennis teaching professional. Jacksonville State University men's tennis team to top 20 national rankings, earning Gulf South Conference coach of the year honors in 1980. Forged partnerships between the PTR, USTA, and Special Olympics, including recognition of the PTR as the Official Tennis Training Partner of Special Olympics. Glenn has authored over 100 publications and spoken at more than 250 conferences, workshops and seminars in 30 countries. He has led a number of projects in eastern Europe and China and was twice selected as a European Union Erasmus Mundus Scholar, which involved guest teaching positions at Palacky University in Czech Republic and Limerick University in Ireland.

Fely Curva is currently serving as the National Academy of Health and Physical Literacy Advocacy Committee co-chair. Fely has much experience lobbying, specifically working with SHAPE Florida. Michelle Grenier is the current President of the National Consortium for Physical Education for Individuals with Disabilties (NCPEID). She is an expert in the field of adapted physical education. Michelle received her Bachelor's degree in Physical Education from the University of Massachusetts, her MS in Special Physical Education from the University of New Hampshire, and her PhD in Physical Education and Disability from the University of New Hampshire. She is Professor Emeritus for the University of New Hampshire where she has been in the Department of Kinesiology since 2000. Michelle is well known for her numerous publications and presentations. Michelle's teaching career spans more than 30 years. She is the recipient of many awards and honors, such as: 2021 SHAPE America- Julian U. Stein Lifetime Achievement Award 2020 NHAHPERD Meritorious Achievement Award. 2019 Outstanding Program Award. SHAPE America. Larry Judge currently serves as Associate Chair and Professor of Kinesiology at Ball State University [at Ball State since 2006]. He has BA in Political Science, MPA Public Administration, MS Physical Education (Exercise Science/Sport Management), and PhD Education Administration (Higher Education Admin/Exercise Science). Larry holds many professional certifications: National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Personal Trainer. USA Weightlifting Advanced Sport Performance Coach. USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Coach United States Track and Field, Level 3 Coach American College of Sports Medicine, Health Fitness Instructor American Council on Exercise, Certified Personal Trainer, National Strength and Conditioning Association, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist Larry is one of the preeminent throw coaches in the country. Hagan Landry, one of Larry's athletes, won the silver medal in the men's shot put (F41) in the Paralympics this Summer.
Susan Jackson received her Bachelor's and Ed.S. degrees in Physical Education from University of Montevallo and her Master's degree in Physical Education from UAB. She has retired with 30+ years as an Elementary Physical Education teacher in two different schools. She has worked as an adjunct instructor for two universities. Currently, Susan is an archery instructor for Hoover Parks and Recreation. She serves as a representative for HEAL United. She works with Alabama Conference of Educators. Susan has served and continues to serve in numerous positions at the state, regional and national level. Susan has received numerous awards and honors, such as: Alumnus of the Year for UM and UAB Elementary Teacher of the Year for ASAHPERD and Southern District TOY for both schools she taught (Childersburg Elem & Valley Elem) Teacher Hall of Fame at Childersburg Elementary Jump Rope for Heart Awards at the state, regional and national level Susan was a cooperating teacher for many student interns and definitely has made her mark within the profession. Linda received her Bachelor's Science Degree in Health and Physical Education from Lock Haven University. She taught Health and Physical Education for 10 years and coached field hockey, basketball and gymnastics. Linda's experience also includes managing a racquet club for 5 years. Linda received her Masters Degree in Management from Penn State University. Linda served as the Executive Director of PSAHPERD for 37 years and is now retired. She has been a PSAHPERD member for 45+ years and has served on many Eastern District Association Councils and Committees, including Eastern District President, Eastern District Parliamentarian, and Society of Association management (SAM). Currently, Linda is the Parliamentarian for The National Academy of Health and Physical Literacy.
Brent has a distinguished career in Health Education/Health Literacy and serves the profession in a number of leadership roles. Brent's background includes receiving his Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science from Samford University and his PhD in Health Education and Health Promotion from UAB. Currently, Brent is a Professor at California State University, Stanislaus and is the President of Western District SHAPE America. Toni Leo has had a storied career in physical education and coaching. She received her Bachelor's degree in Physical and Health Education from University of Montevallo and her Master's degree in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. She served for 29 years as MS/HS Physical Educator, Health Educator, Dance Educator and Coach at 8 schools where she coached volleyball, basketball, tennis and archery AND was the choreographer of 5 musicals and show choir. Toni also worked with the Alabama State Department of Education as the Health and Physical Education Specialist and retired from public education in 2013. In her "retired" life, Toni has worked and/or volunteered for the Alabama Sports Foundation, the American Red Cross, the Alabama Sports Festival Foundation, HEAL United, and the Hoover archery range. Additionally, she is an adjunct instructor for the University of Alabama - Birmingham (UAB).
