The root issue is not willpower. It's hormones and inflammation. A 2019 NIH study by Kevin Hall had participants eating ultra-processed vs. whole foods at matched calories. On the ultra-processed diet, they ate 500 extra calories per day without realizing it. The food was driving the overconsumption, not a lack of discipline. The five foods to remove: Liquid sugar. Sodas, juices, sports drinks, and flavored coffee drinks don't register as fullness. The Harvard Nurses' Health Study found adding one sugary drink per day led to 358 extra calories consumed daily. Swap for black coffee, plain tea, or sparkling water. Ultra-processed breads and tortillas. Stripped of nutrition and engineered for shelf life, modern bread spikes blood sugar as much as a Snickers bar according to Dr. William Davis. Opt for fermented sourdough or sprouted grain, or remove bread entirely for 30 days. Boxed pastas and processed comfort foods. Hyper-palatable combinations of salt, sugar, fat, and starch that overstimulate the brain's reward centers while leaving the body nutritionally depleted. A follow-up to Hall's study found people eating these foods consumed up to 1,000 extra calories per day. Seed oil-laden dressings, sauces, and condiments. Soybean, canola, corn, sunflower, and related oils produce carcinogenic aldehydes during processing and are in roughly 80% of the food supply. Replace with avocado oil, extra virgin olive oil, grass-fed butter, ghee, coconut oil, beef tallow, or duck fat. Look for seed oil-free brands like Primal Kitchen and Chosen Foods. Alcohol. A 1992 New England Journal of Medicine study found moderate alcohol consumption drops fat oxidation by 70% for hours. Le lien entre travail de nuit et cancer du sein est aujourd'hui sérieusement étudié… mais il reste complexe, nuancé, et parfois contre-intuitif.Tout part d'un constat biologique simple : notre corps fonctionne selon une horloge interne, appelée rythme circadien. Or, travailler la nuit perturbe profondément ce rythme. En particulier, l'exposition à la lumière nocturne diminue la production de mélatonine, une hormone du sommeil qui joue aussi un rôle protecteur contre certains cancers. C'est dans ce contexte qu'intervient la célèbre “Nurses' Health Study”, l'une des plus grandes études épidémiologiques jamais menées. Elle a suivi des dizaines de milliers d'infirmières pendant plusieurs décennies. Les résultats sont nuancés. Dans la première cohorte, les femmes ayant travaillé de nuit pendant plus de 30 ans ne présentaient pas d'augmentation significative du risque de cancer du sein. Mais dans une cohorte plus récente, appelée Nurses' Health Study II, une autre réalité apparaît : les femmes ayant travaillé de nuit pendant plus de 20 ans — surtout lorsqu'elles avaient commencé jeunes — présentaient un risque accru, parfois multiplié par deux. Comment expliquer cette différence ? Probablement par l'âge d'exposition. Le travail de nuit semble plus délétère lorsqu'il intervient tôt dans la vie, à un moment où les tissus mammaires sont plus sensibles aux perturbations hormonales.Au-delà de cette étude, l'ensemble des données scientifiques reste contrasté. Certaines recherches montrent une augmentation du risque, notamment chez les femmes ayant travaillé de nuit pendant de longues périodes ou à forte intensité. D'autres, au contraire, ne trouvent pas d'association claire. En résumé, le lien existe probablement… mais il est modéré, et dépend de nombreux facteurs : durée, fréquence, âge, hygiène de vie.Face à ces incertitudes, les autorités sanitaires ont pris une position prudente mais importante. En 2007, le Centre international de recherche sur le cancer (CIRC), dépendant de l'OMS, a classé le travail de nuit perturbant les rythmes biologiques comme « probablement cancérogène pour l'homme » (groupe 2A). Ce classement signifie qu'il existe des indices sérieux, sans preuve définitive.Alors, faut-il s'inquiéter ? Pas nécessairement. Le risque, s'il existe, reste relativement faible à l'échelle individuelle. Mais il devient significatif à l'échelle de populations entières, notamment chez les professions très exposées comme les infirmières.En conclusion, le travail de nuit n'est pas anodin. The Cancer in Iowa Report published annually by the Iowa Cancer Registry gives an overview of the current burden of cancer in the state. This year's report features findings from the Agricultural Health Study, one of the world's largest and longest-running active studies of agricultural exposures and health. We talk with Iowa Cancer Registry Director Mary Charlton about this year's report which estimates this year that 21,700 Iowans will be diagnosed with cancer and 6,400 Iowans will die of cancer. We'll also talk with principal investigator of the Agricultural Health Study Laura Beane Freeman about the findings from their study that began in the mid-1990s with participants from Iowa and North Carolina. David Cwiertny of the University of Iowa's Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination also joins to discuss various environmental factors in the state that may be contributing to cancer diagnoses.

She held different national professional position in curriculum development and National Chief Examiner for several years. She acted Deputy Head for a couple years at Masiyephambili College. She is now Head of that School. Dr. Phuti also discusses her adaptability… the importance of education and financial independence for women and girls, and her commitment to advancing their rights… owning and running a farm… praise for her liberal husband, a university professor… and her closing words of encouragement—“Let's be open-minded. Dr Jean Côté is a Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen's University, Canada. His research interests include children in sport, coaching, youth development, and sport expertise. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology (SCAPPS) and the International Society of Sport Psychology (ISSP), and has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and 70 book chapters. At age 60, Erica Rand decided to take up pairs figure skating. As two white queer adult skaters, Rand and her partner have come into direct contact with the interconnected binarisms that shape athletic participation, from oversimplified distinctions between cis and trans to the artificial division between athletic and artistic. Rand's book Skating Away from the Binary is a call to transform gender norms in sport. Here, Rand is joined in conversation with Travers and Mary Louis Adams. Learn how mildly elevated prolactin can suppress ovulation, lower progesterone, and impact fertility—even when labs appear normal. We also discuss common causes, symptoms, the role of stress and medications, and why diet (including gluten sensitivity) may matter. This episode focuses on precision medicine, not fear—helping you understand what standard reference ranges often miss. Citations: Research — Prolactin and Breast Cancer Risk Below are key epidemiologic and review papers that inform the discussion in this episode regarding prolactin and breast biology. These studies look at associations, not simple cause-and-effect relationships, and help explain why prolactin shows up in breast health conversations. Meta-analysis: circulating prolactin and breast cancer risk Wang M, et al. (2016). Plasma prolactin and breast cancer risk: a meta-analysis. Cancer Causes & Control. This meta-analysis pooled data from multiple observational studies comparing women with higher versus lower circulating prolactin levels. Across studies, higher prolactin levels were associated with a modest but statistically significant increase in breast cancer risk. The association was most evident in postmenopausal women and in hormone-receptor–positive tumors. This helps explain why prolactin is considered a relevant growth signal in breast tissue rather than just a “lactation hormone.” Systematic review and meta-analysis: prolactin levels across breast cancer cohorts Aranha AF, et al. (2022). Impact of prolactin levels in breast cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Endocrine-Related Cancer. This more recent systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated circulating prolactin levels across breast cancer populations and control groups. Elevated prolactin levels were associated with higher breast cancer occurrence, with stronger associations seen in invasive cancers and hormone-receptor–positive disease. This paper adds weight to the idea that prolactin participates in breast biology in ways that matter clinically, even outside of pregnancy and breastfeeding. Prospective cohort studies: prolactin measured before diagnosis Tworoger SS, et al. (2004; 2006). Prospective analyses from large cohorts including the Nurses' Health Study. In these studies, prolactin was measured years before any breast cancer diagnosis. Women with higher prolactin levels had a higher likelihood of developing breast cancer later, particularly estrogen-receptor–positive tumors in postmenopausal women. Because prolactin was measured before cancer developed, these studies help clarify timing and reduce the concern that elevated prolactin is simply a consequence of disease. Mechanistic context (supportive background) Experimental and translational studies show that prolactin receptor signaling influences mammary epithelial cell growth, differentiation, and interaction with estrogen signaling pathways. This provides a biologic backdrop for why epidemiologic associations between prolactin and breast cancer risk keep appearing across different study designs. How to read this as a clinician or patient These data do not mean prolactin “causes” breast cancer in a simple or deterministic way. What they do show is that prolactin is an active hormone in breast tissue, and chronically higher levels are consistently associated with changes in breast risk profiles across large populations. That's why prolactin deserves attention in conversations about fertility, breast symptoms, and long-term hormonal signaling—not fear, and not dismissal. Sara Howard, Ph.D., is an epidemiologist in the Health Studies group at ORAU who earned her doctoral degree in 2025. For part of her dissertation, she used machine learning techniques to analyze data from the National Supplemental Screening Program, which ORAU manages with several partners for the U.S. Department of Energy, to examine the link between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and occupational exposures. While we often think of COPD in the context of smoking, Howard wanted to look at the potential to be exposed to something other than smoking. Her dissertation, An Epidemiologic Study of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the United States, was published by the University of Tennessee in 2025. Marni Jacobs, Ph.D., M.P.H., presents the MOM Health Study, part of the NIH's Multi-Omics for Health and Disease (MOHD) Consortium, which investigates hypertensive disorders of pregnancy—such as preeclampsia—and their impact on postpartum health. In recent years “Zone 2 training” has gained immense popularity in fitness and health circles, often being proclaimed the “best” cardiovascular training for metabolic health. She continues her studies enrolled in the Master of Education Psychology program at the University of Regina; with this advanced education, it is her vision to provide alternative mental health therapy to indigenous youth. Her educational accomplishments have allowed her to be a part of the development of health programs that encompass Holistic, and Indigenous Ways of Knowing as part of healing and also promoting actionable movements of Truth & Reconciliation in the City of Regina. Between parenting, studies, and work she has volunteered for many community groups in Regina.
