S6 E3: Fostering Engagement in Learning w/UDL expert Allison Posey. In a world of checks and boxes, especially in work and learning, our goal is to have listeners think about what is possible to transform their own lives. The way we engage in all we do is often a choice, but the transformation and level of engagement can be increased when we have appropriate access to the possibilities. In this episode, we are thrilled to be joined by friend and colleague, Allison Posey who is an expert in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and author of: “Engage the Brain: How to Design for Learning that Taps into the Power of Emotions” and “Unlearning: Changing Your Beliefs and Your Classroom with UDL”. Our discussion with Allison traverses the possibilities that educators and designers of all environments- which we believe are all learning environments- can proactively plan for to accommodate variability. When we design with flexibility and access in mind, we ultimately create greater equity and facilitate engagement in learning. Be curious. Be Open. Today's episode, titled "Rethinking Weapon Play in Classrooms: Balancing Safety, Learning, and Playful Exploration," takes us on a journey through personal experiences, societal implications, and educational strategies around the often controversial topic of weapon play in early childhood settings. Host Roberto Germán is joined by two distinguished guests: Kisa Marx, an author and anti-racist curriculum developer, and Samuel Broaden, an early education expert and speaker. Together, they bring a wealth of insight from their personal backgrounds and professional experiences. Kisa Marx shares her childhood experiences growing up amid the crack war and gang violence in Chicago, contrasting with her current perspective as a parent and advocate for mindful play. Samuel Broaden reflects on his rural upbringing and evolving views on toy weapons, influenced by his educational journey and personal connections. Their discussion brings to light the complex layers of safety, racial dynamics, and the developmental importance of imaginative play. Through this episode, we uncover how children use weapon play to explore power, consent, and kindness, and why it's essential for educators to approach this subject with empathy and an open mind. We also delve into broader themes of boundaries versus rules in classrooms, the importance of continuous dialogue, and the unique challenges faced by educators today. Stay tuned as we navigate these intricacies, providing practical insights and strategies for creating a balanced and inclusive learning environment. You're listening to Voices of Your Village, and I'm so stoked about this episode. We get to chat about rethinking weapon play. This is a hot topic. It's one with a lot of opinions, and I really wanted to dive into the child development aspect of this. I got to hang out with Kisa Marx and Samuel Broaden to have this conversation. Kisa is an author, a child advocate, and a champion of early educators. With over two decades in the field, she spent 15 years running her self -affirming play in nature focused family home childcare in Oak Park, Illinois. Recently, she switched to a nonprofit model to offer high quality childcare to families who would otherwise be denied access. Kisa's advocacy, pedagogy, and ethos are anchored in three pillars: childhood is sacred, nature is restorative, and play is revolutionary. When she's not in the field with her crew or advocating with fellow childhood champions, Kisa can be found with her partner of 26 years tending to their garden of adult children, pets, and plants. Samuel is an early childhood advocate and author who believes in the power of childhood and showing children the power they have within themselves. He has worked in the early education field for 20 years, from a teacher to administration to quality coach to author and speaker. He believes in the importance of creating safe spaces for all children to discover who they are and be celebrated for that. He's the author of Gender Expression and Inclusivity in Early Childhood, A Teacher's Guide to Queering the Classroom, and their new book, Rethinking Weapon Play in Early Childhood, How to Encourage Imagination, Kindness, and Consent in Your Classroom, is out now from Kisa and Samuel. In our first episode of Season Seven, host Melissa is joined by early childhood experts Samuel Broaden and Kisa Marx as they delve into a deeply relevant topic: weapon play in early childhood education. This engaging discussion goes beyond mere policies and digs into how we, as educators, can approach this play with curiosity rather than fear, ultimately supporting children's emotional development and learning.Key Takeaways:Understanding Weapon Play: Samuel and Kisa illuminate how weapon play can serve as a vehicle for children's emotional expression and social navigation. Listening to the motivations behind this play fosters empathetic dialogue and learning opportunities. Creating Safe Spaces: Reflecting on their experiences, both guests emphasize the importance of creating educational environments where children feel emotionally safe to discuss their fears and experiences, especially when touched by violence.Play-Promoting Policies: The conversation highlights the need for educators to shift away from restrictive policies toward more inclusive practices that honor children's innate impulses to explore complex themes through play.Empowering Educators: Through community and sharing experiences, educators can overcome feelings of isolation and feel empowered to innovate their approaches, fostering a child-led classroom dynamic.Community Connection: Samuel and Kisa stress the importance of building supportive relationships between educators and families, enabling a collaborative effort in nurturing children's emotional well-being.Actionable Steps:1. Engage in Open Dialogue: Create opportunities for children to express their feelings about weapon play and related themes, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for discussing complex emotions.2. Professional Development: Encourage your professional growth by attending workshops focused on inclusive practices in early childhood education to feel equipped to handle sensitive topics.3. Annie Friday is joined this week by Samuel Broaden of Honoring Childhood and Kisa Marx of The Play Lab Foundation to discuss their newly released book titled Rethinking Weapon Play in Early Childhood: How to Encourage Imagination, Kindness, and Consent in Your Classroom. Right away, Kisa and Samuel dive into the reality that many adults feel activated, challenged, or triggered by this type of power play. They offer strategies for reflection and growth for the adults in play spaces while also explaining the benefits of this category of play. In a world filled with violence and a country full gun violence, the fears are valid, and yet as adults it is our moral imperative to face those fears. In that process, we need to decide how we can share our concerns and shift those into boundaries that honor consent and safety. This episode does include references to violence and real life examples of when gun play has turned to tragedy. The Tamir Rice Foundation led by Samaria Rice and Rebuild Foundation led by Theaster Gates are two important organizations preserving the memory of Tamir Rice and uplifting the power and potential of community through ensuring the existence of safe and culturally-rich spaces specifically for Black children and families. Here 4 The Kids is another organization focused on ending gun violence in the US and hosts weekly community chats every Thursday at 12:00 pm ET. Curious how we can hold space for both the fears around violence and the need for kids to engage in power play? Listen in as Kisa and Samuel share how our feelings toward gun violence are tied to and also separate from the benefits of weapon play. Thanks for listening!
