Alex Green lost football, then he almost lost his life. The former NFL running back shares his chilling story with Go Long on our latest Happy Hour session. This may be our most compelling yet with Green, the ex-Packer, detailing his descent into a gripping addiction to alcohol, weed and cocaine. In harrowing detail, he relives the night he nearly overdosed.Thank you to those who joined the Zoom call and brough such excellent questions. As a reminder, these are always open to our paid subscribers. Is there a former player you'd like to hang out with? Let me know at golongtd@gmail.com.Green was exceptionally transparent, expanding on everything he initially revealed in January 2022. Audio and video is above, and available everywhere you access podcasts, including Apple, Spotify and YouTube. * Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley gunning for his torn ACL in those Packers/Lions games. (Who would've thunk it?!)* After tearing up defenses at Hawaii, Green was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the third round. He was surprised himself. Football stories are shared sporadically, including the (now hilarious) night Green and DuJuan Harris watched their employer draft Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin. They knew they were toast right then. * Jets Football wasn't real NFL football. * His fall. Once Green finished with the NFL and CFL, he slipped into a cycle of “depression, anxiety, a lot of fear.” He became somebody else, coping with the anguish by filling his body with drugs. He cut people out of his life. He became a total recluse heading down a very dark path. In his mind, drugs became a “best friend.” Specifically, cocaine. * Hopelessness eventually set in. Staring at a mountain of cocaine, one night, Green was prepared to overdose and end his life. (“It's right there. You're that close.”) With one message — I need help — one conversation saved his life, then changed his life. The fact that this text message reached the right person is a miracle itself. He explains. * Transforming his life was not possible overnight. Eliminating suicidal “ideations” and discovering meaning in his life has been gradual. He's still working at it. But Green wants to help everyone he possibly can. * We take the conversation big picture. Green knows many former players deal with the same emotions. The pain can be both physical and mental when the cheering stops. Caleb Williams is coming to town and hopefully he won't have a hard time passing Erik Kramer's 3,838 passing yards in a season. And maybe, just maybe, DJ Moore can pass Johnny Morris' franchise record of 5,059 career receiving yards. Both of those records should be relatively easy, but what Chicago marks will stand forever? Walter Payton's 16,276 yards? Michael Jordan's 29,277 points? Something else? Kevin Kaduk, Mark Carman and Lawrence Benedetto discuss on the latest edition of THE Chicago Sports Podcast! Erik Kramer built an NFL career on precision, timing, and accuracy, but it was his greatest miss that led to him building a complete life. Since surviving a 2015 suicide attempt, the former quarterback is making his ultimate comeback day after day, living with renewed sense of purpose. Athletically, Kramer climbed up from the "bottom of the barrel," in his words. Getting a chance to make a first impression was tough enough for a football player who was unrecruited out of high school and was undrafted by the NFL out of college. Now he is using his second chance at life to share his story with the world to help save the lives of others.

Erik Kramer, “The Ultimate Comeback: Surviving a Suicide Attempt, Conquering Depression, and Living with a Purpose, What put him in a place to go through what he’s been through and then inspire him to write this book? How would Erik have approached things differently, looking back at his experiences? What might be the differences and similarities for people who are athletes and non-athletes, but may be having the same feelings? How long had Erik been dealing with depression? What pushed him to almost making an irrevocable decision?
This life story is almost too outrageous to believe. I first connected with Erik Kramer ahead of our launch of Go Long in 2020. He was eager to share everything that's happened in his life since football. It's unfathomable. He lost his son to a heroin overdose. He lost both of his parents. He attempted to take his own life, even pulling the trigger inside of a hotel room. Miraculously, Kramer survived. Major surgery was a success, but it took Kramer's brain a full five years to wake up. While it was impossible for outsiders to tell, he had the mental capacity of a 6-year-old. And that's when he nearly lost himself again. Kramer was coerced into a sham marriage and says he lost about $700,000.The former NFL quarterback detailed it all in our three-part series, The Fight For Erik Kramer's Life. (Then again on a Happy Hour with subscribers.)Now, you can learn about Kramer's entire life from Kramer himself. His autobiography — “The Ultimate Comeback” — has officially hit the shelves. You can purchase a copy on Amazon and everywhere books are sold. It's fantastic. It's the definition of a page-turner in this genre. So, for our next 1-on-1 podcast here at Go Long, we welcome back Kramer. His rise as a quarterback in this sport is wild itself. Kramer didn't even start in high school… was a backup in need of an epiphany at the JUCO level… shined at N.C. State… got his shot as a “scab” during the NFL strike… bartended with a side of football in the CFL… and finally got his shot with the Detroit Lions after calling every team's main-line phone number in a media guide. Here's the audio and video of conversation on the podcast. I'll post the text later today.Go Long is your home for longform journalism in pro football. Thank you for joining our community.
