Seit 40 Jahren setzen sich die Mainzer Soroptimistinnen für die Rechte von Frauen und Mädchen ein. World Day for International Justice is also known as Day of International Criminal Justice or International Justice. This is a day marked around the world on 17 July as a way to recognise the system of international criminal justice.  In our podcast to mark this day we are looking at a specific aspect of criminal and social justice, the trafficking women and girls. Our guest is Linda Witong, Soroptimist International Advocacy Advisor 2024-2025. Linda has served as the President of the Soroptimists of Marin County and Novato and has been a Soroptimist delegate to the UN Commission on the Status of Women from 2013-2024. Linda is now retired but she was Deputy District Attorney in the Marin County District Attorney's Office for over 32 years. She is currently a member of the Marin County Human Trafficking Coalition and is receiving training in homicide investigation, human trafficking, child abduction and elder abuse. 

An Ennis Soroptimist is seeking supports from the government for people who have experienced domestic violence. Clare County Council has announced that they will be joining with Ennis & District Soroptimists to highlight a United Nations campaign to end violence against women and girls. The most recent Aontu report shows that Gardaí in Clare received over 800 reports of domestic violence in the space of a year. With the annual campaign launching tomorrow, Fianna Fail Councillor Clare Colleran Molloy urging women that find themselves in this situation to speak out.

Maar ik ben eigenlijk geboren in Amerika. Mijn vader is daar ook geboren en daar noemen we dus “Kodi”. Wat heb jij graag dat ik zeg? [Koote is goed] Maar ik ga je gewoon bij uw voornaam aanspreken. Voilà, Eline Cote is het meestal hier in België. Dus jij bent Amerikaanse? Ja ik heb eigenlijk de dubbele nationaliteit. Ik ben daar ook niet zo lang geweest, maar een paar maanden eigenlijk. Maar we gaan elk jaar terug want de helft van onze familie zit daar en de helft van de familie zit hier want onze mama is wel van België. En ik ben altijd tweetalig opgevoed, dus dat was voor mij een grote voorsprong op anderen. Dat was wel handig. Waar in Amerika ben je geboren? In Chicago. Ja, dat is toch wel een tweede thuis daar als ik daar aankom. Ah, echt waar? Ja, als ik daar aankom voel me helemaal ontstresst ja. Dat komt ook misschien omdat ik naar daar ga als vakantie is. Maar ja het is een heel leuke stad. Vertel eens even: wie is Eline? Ik ben een muzikant eerst en vooral. Ik speel contrabas. Ik ben zeer klein: ik ben maar een meter vijftig. Maar toch heb ik voor het allergrootste instrument gekozen. Da's gewoon supercool als je acht jaar bent en je ziet zo'n gigantisch ding dan denk je: yeah, dat kan ik wel spelen! En ja, tot zo ver is het gelukt. Dus jij bent professioneel muzikant. Ik ben professioneel muzikant. Ja, ik heb mijn master behaald aan het conservatorium van Antwerpen drie jaar geleden. En samen met een master in lesgeven voor muziek en een master in creatief project waarvoor ik hier ben uitgenodigd om over te praten. Want mijn creatief project was mijn vrouwenorkest zodat ik heb opgericht. Ik zeg altijd het is een beetje een ludiek begin geweest. Ik ben naar de kunsthumaniora gegaan vanaf het derde middelbaar. Ik zat voordien in een richting met vijf uur Latijn in een katholieke middelbare school en ik dacht van ‘ja, het lukt wel maar het is niet zo mijn ding'. [De rechterkant van je brein had stimulans nodig?] Ja, en ik was toen al toch wel even met muziek bezig en ik dacht ja, ik wil gewoon muzikant zijn. Waar ken ik dat doen? En ik ontdekt: er bestaat zoiets als een kunst humaniora waar ge zowel een ASO opleiding kunt hebben en daarbovenop krijg je dan nog eens 13 uur muziek. Dat leek me wel interessant! En in het vijfde middelbaar kregen wij daar tijdens onze les Engels – een les waarin ik natuurlijk beter was dan de andere leerlingen omdat ik Amerikaanse was - kregen wij de opdracht om een liefdadigheidsorganisatie naar keuze te bespreken. Maar ik was altijd speciaal en ik moest van mezelf iets kiezen waar niemand nog niet van gehoord had. Dus ik was maar aan het zoeken, aan het zoeken en zoeken en ik kwam ineens op een speech van Emma Watson, de actrice. En die gaf een speech voor de organisatie He For She. He For She is een organisatie die ervoor probeert te zorgen dat mannen mee in het gesprek komen van gendergelijkheid. Dat is dat is wat die willen doen. Maar zij gaf een speech over gender equality -  en ik was direct.. ik zat meteen op m'n paard.. Ik hield een spreekbeurt van een half uur lang  waarin ik echt super bevlogen bezig was van ‘zie, dit is het probleem en we moeten hier iets aan doen..!' En ja, typisch de mensen in mijn klas waren dan met andere dingen bezig. Maar ik was héél enthousiast en ik vroeg me af ‘hoe kan ik als zeventienjarige hier iets aandoen?' Dus ik dacht: ‘misschien moet ik beginnen met kijken waar ik in wil werken, in mijn vak.' En dat is de klassieke muziek. Dus ik ben naar concerten gaan kijken, zoals ik altijd deed.. En ik lette op: zie ik veel vrouwen in het orkest? Er waren vrouwen, maar waar waren er geen vrouwen? Vaak niet bij mijn instrument: de contrabas, vaak niet bij de koperblazers of slagwerk. En ik hou altijd mijn programmaboekjes bij. En ik ben dan in al mijn programmaboekjes beginnen bladeren en dan zag ik eigenlijk hetzelfde voorkomen. Maar ik zag ook nérgens geen vrouwelijke componisten. [Ah ja, ok, langs de andere kant van het spectrum] Ja. En ik dacht van ‘bestaan die dan niet?' – Kan hè, weet ik veel.. Hetzelfde met vrouwelijke dirigenten: daar had ik nog nooit van gezien of van gehoord. Dus ik ben dan echt beginnen opzoeken. En het blijkt dus dat er keivéél vrouwen de componisten zijn. Er zijn heel wat vrouwelijke dirigenten, maar dat die dus eigenlijk niet de kansen krijgen van hun mannelijke counterparts. In de geschiedenis en de dag van vandaag ook niet - laten we daar heel eerlijk in zijn. Het is wel veel verbeterd en het gaat de goede richting uit, maar het gaat heel moeizaam. Heb het gevoel dat dat vandaag de dag nog zo is? Dat vrouwelijke componisten bijvoorbeeld minder kansen krijgen? Ja. Ik heb mijn masterthesis geschreven rond seksisme binnen de klassieke muziek -  natuurlijk in de Westerse wereld, omdat ik daar ook in zit in dat wereldje. En dan ben ik op een website terechtgekomen – en ik heb de dame in kwestie een maand geleden via zoom ontmoet, ik was helemaal vereerd.. en de website is donne-uk.  En zij doet al jaren een studie waarbij ze naar de top-orkesten ter wereld gaat kijken en kijkt naar hun programma. En ze ziet hoeveel stukken in hun programma zij met mannelijke componisten, vrouwelijke componisten,  van mensen met een andere huidskleur, van mensen die een andere seksualiteit hebben, alles d'r op en eraan, ze monitort al die dingen. Natuurlijk, ik focuste mij vooral op het verschil tussen mannen en vrouwen. En ik zal zeggen: uit de de studie van vorig seizoen voor België bleek dat 1,9% van de werken die gespeeld werden door de zes orkesten hier, de professionele orkesten, van vrouwen waren. 1,9%. Maar heeft dat dan ook niet te maken met feit dat die vooral oude muziek spelen en dat er dus in ‘t verleden een groot probleem was? Maar ik vraag mij af als je nu hedendaagse componisten zou bekijken, heb je dan t gevoel of enige evidence dat vrouwelijke componisten vandaag den dag minder kansen krijgen dan hun mannelijke counterparts? Dat is een heel interessante vraag. Het gaat de goede richting uit. Wat je wel nu krijgt: veel is – wat ik hoor van de vrouwelijke componisten die rond mij zitten -  is dat er heel veel wedstrijden nu komen die specifiek gericht zijn naar enkel vrouwelijke componisten. Maar wat ik dan ook hoor is ‘ja ik vind dat eigenlijk niet zo fair'. Ik wil gewoon dat er een wedstrijd is voor componisten. Punt. Want het feit dat ik een vrouw ben zou me eigenlijk niet moeten uitmaken. En dat is eigenlijk waar dat ik hoop ook op een dag te komen.. Maar heel de discussie over quota is natuurlijk zelfde net. Ja inderdaad. Misschien is er wel even een inhaalbeweging nodig. Om te komen tot een gebalanceerd.. Inderdaad. En daarom mijn vrouwenorkest dat ik heb opgericht. Om inderdaad die awareness te creëren. Vandaag de dag, wat ik wel zie is: als ze daar een werk wordt gespeeld van een vrouw.. Vaak is dat dan van een van de meer populaire vrouwelijke componisten van de geschiedenis of van een hedendaagse vrouwelijke componiste. Maar er is zo geen middenpad. En eigenlijk zeg je: als je daar naar op zoek gaat, dan is er nog een hele verzameling van interessante werken van vrouwelijke componisten die eigenlijk nog ontgonnen moet worden bijna. Of die nog ontdekt moet worden? Ja, ik heb een heel interessante conversatie gehad met een mannelijke contrabassist. Die ik heb geïnterviewd voor mijn plaat die ik heb opgenomen - ik heb een soloplaat opgenomen voor mij en mijn contrabas, waarop ik werken speel van alleen maar vrouwelijke componisten. En ik wilde ook graag het verhaal horen rond waarom hebben ze dat geschreven en over wat gaat het stuk. En die specifieke componiste heb ik niet kunnen bereiken. Maar ik heb wel de contrabassist kunnen bereiken waarvoor ze het stuk geschreven heeft. En hij had het ook over: een heel groot probleem met de vrouwelijke componisten is - heel veel partituren liggen klaar, maar het is zo duur om daar partijen van te maken dat veel orkesten zeggen van ja laat het maar. Je hebt altijd een score: daar staat gewoon alles op, dat is wat de dirigente ziet. Maar natuurlijk als instrumentist ga je niet spelen van een partij waar dat er twintig andere instrumenten op staan.. En puur voor het printwerk en om iemand dat werk te laten doen van er partijen van te maken, vinden ze het te duur omdat er niet genoeg mensen die muziek spelen van die vrouwelijke componisten. Dus ze willen hun tijd daar niet aan besteden. Dat is de kip en het ei.. Voilà. En zo blijft dat repertoire daar maar liggen. Is dat iets waar je zelf iets mee aan het doen bent? Want ik stel mij voor dat je dan zelf ook vooral muziek van vrouwelijke componisten wil spelen? Ja inderdaad. Dus wij spelen enkele werken van vrouwelijke componisten en ik ga altijd op zoek naar een componiste waar ik zelf nog nooit van heb gehoord. En dan bekijk ik dat: ofwel is er zo een heel veel vage opname van even lang geleden of is er zo een kleine snippet ergens of zelfs soms is er niets te vinden. En dan bekijk ik dat met onze dirigente Pascale Van Os. Zij kan ook heel goed piano en dan speelt zij zo een beetje een reductie en dan kunnen wij dat een beetje interpreteren: is dit een stuk dat past binnen het repertoire dat we voor dit project willen spelen? En dat is heel leuk omdat dat echt een ontdekkingsreis is terug in de geschiedenis. En je vindt dan echt zo veel pareltjes! Maar wat er dan bij komt kijken is een hele dure kost voor ons om die muziek te spelen. Want als je die muziek wilt uitvoeren hangt daar een stevig prijskaartje aan om dat te huren. Dat is duur omwille van de reden die je net gezegd hebt, dus dat er dus iemand daar inspanningen heeft voor  moeten maken om al die partijen uit elkaar te trekken. En dat is ook niet het werk wat jullie zelf nu op eigen houtje gaan doen of zien zitten of daar mensen voor in het orkest hebben die dat die dat kunnen of willen doen? Ja het probleem is: dat is in realiteit gewoon heel veel werk. Daar zou je iemand echt voor moeten vergoeden. Ja dan blijft het duur. Maar het dat is iets dat mij al heel lang interesseert. Maar je zou er misschien geld mee kunnen verdienen? Want eens je dat gedaan hebt, kan je het  natuurlijk ook aanbieden aan anderen. Ja, dat is waar. Na die conversatie ben ik daar echt over beginnen nadenken: hoe kunnen we ervoor zorgen dat die werken niet in de vergeetput blijven liggen? Hoe kunnen we het volgende pareltje, de volgende Beethoven V bij wijze van spreken - die ligt daar misschien wel tussen.. Maar als niemand het een kans geeft.. Wat ik soms ook wel eens hoor of meen gehoord te hebben, is dat wellicht in de geschiedenis heel wat vrouwelijke componisten hun werken op de markt gebracht hebben onder de naam van een mannelijke componist. Klara Schubert is dan een voorbeeld dat wel eens genoemd wordt – hoewel dat die dan in eigen naam ook wel dingen heeft uitgebracht..   Ja, dat is zo. Een ander groot voorbeeld is Fanny Mendelssohn. Je hebt haar broer Felix Mendelssohn die heel bekend is. Een heel aantal van Felix zijn werken waren eigenlijk van Fanny. En er is ook een vrouw: Augusta Holmès die de naam Herman, Zolta of Herman Zenta had gekozen als naam om haar werken te kunnen publiceren. En achteraf natuurlijk moet er maar ene zijn in de buurt die dat weet, die dat ergens heeft opgeschreven dat die pseudoniem toebehoort aan Augusta.. Wij hebben al twee van haar werken gespeeld. Prachtig. Prachtige overdreven melancholische, romantische werken waar je van in katzwijm valt. Dat was echt haar stijl. De geschiedenis is altijd hard geweest voor vrouwen, voor hun plek, en in de muziekgeschiedenis is dat niet anders. Vrouwen mochten vroeger alleen maar in hun huiskamer muziek spelen en dan heb ik het over de barok periode en daarna zelfs nog. En dan mochten ze ook alleen maar instrumenten spelen die een vrouwelijk waren. Dus de klavecimbel of de harp of de luit. Sommigen mochten zelfs misschien viool spelen. Maar ik heb ergens gelezen in.. – een heel goed boek om te lezen over vrouwelijke componisten: Het Tweede Thema - daar staat een geschiedenis in van heel veel vrouwelijke componisten door de eeuwen heen. En een stukje  dat ze hebben teruggevonden was van een recensent -  en ik weet niet meer van welk werk het was, ik denk zelfs niet dat het van een vrouwelijke componist was, maar die was aan het  razen en aan ‘t ratelen, want hij zei ‘hoe hallucinant is het om een vrouw aan een cello te zien met haar benen wijd gespreid - afschuwelijk.' Dus ja dat mocht niet. En een blaasinstrument.. Dat is militair, dat is luid.. Vandaag wordt soms nog gezegd door mensen van een iets oudere stempel: ‘ze hebben de longcapaciteit niet, ze hebben de strength niet om daar geluid uit te krijgen.'  Wat natuurlijk onzin is. Ik wil even met jou de vergelijking maken: de rest van de arbeidsmarkt - waar wij voortdurend mee bezig zijn en waar dat we dus voortdurend ook zien dat vrouwen, en wij zijn dan wat meer gaan focussen op vrouwen met migratieroots (maar je zou het kunnen opentrekken naar vrouwen in het algemeen) - dat die op een aantal plekken minder kansen krijgen. Heb je daar vandaag ook bewijs voor? Merk je dat ook in de muziekwereld? Dat vrouwen tout court vandaag de dag ook minder kansen krijgen in orkesten bijvoorbeeld? Ja. In het algemeen wel. Er is wel echt een groot verschil als je het vergelijkt met 50 jaar geleden. Want vrouwen in een orkest is pas een ding sinds na de tweede wereldoorlog. Dat is eigenlijk nog niet zo lang. Nee, vrouwelijke stemrecht in België ook.. Nee voilà.  Het is dan pas dat ze effectief in de orkesten mochten beginnen. Kijk nu bijvoorbeeld de Berliner Symphoniker: ik denk dat dat nog maar een paar jaar geleden is wanneer de allereerste vrouw is toegelaten in dat orkest. Nu zitten daar een stuk of vijf vrouwen denk ik. Dus dat begint te komen. Maar er zijn andere orkesten.. Per land is het ook anders. Je hebt landen die wat progressiever zijn dan andere waar dat dat bij wijze van spreken bijna nooit echt een probleem was (na de tweede wereldoorlog hè). Hoe is dat bij ons? In Vlaanderen en België? Als ik naar de situatie kijk zoals ze vandaag bij ons is moet ik zeggen dat ik toch aangenaam verrast ben. Dus hier is het is het echt bijna fifty-fifty. Want ik hoorde je dat zeggen.. Ik ben zelf nogal een muziekliefhebber en de keren dat wij eens naar een concert gaan is mij dat eigenlijk nog nooit opgevallen en vind ik dat altijd heel vanzelfsprekend dat dat een bonte mengeling is van mannen en vrouwen. Ja, en dat is kei goed, dat is een kei goede instelling die je er hebt. Maar dat is jammer genoeg niet in alle landen zo. In Europa zelfs. Nee, maar jij hebt nu echt wel bewust gezegd ik ga hier in Vlaanderen in Antwerpen een vrouwenorkest samenstellen om aan te tonen dat het wel nog een issue is? Ja. En dus wil eens even peilen van is dat issue er hier daadwerkelijk? Of hebben jullie met het orkest ook echt de ambitie om naar het buitenland te gaan en daar awareness mee te creëren? Dat is uiteraard onze grote ambitie: om dat open te trekken naar het buitenland. We willen heel graag die boodschap verspreiden. We hebben bijvoorbeeld vorig jaar een concert gedaan in samenwerking met de International Alliance for Women in Music (IIAWM), ik ben daar sinds 3 jaar ook board member van. Dat is een wereldwijde organisatie waar je je lid van kan maken. Zij organiseren conferences, concerten,.. Ik ben nu de concert chair voor dit jaar en volgend jaar en het jaar daarop. Waarop we binnen drie jaar hopelijk een heel groot project willen doen in Londen. Het is een beetje ambitieus. Dat is onze passie. Wij hebben op die voorbije conference gespeeld, we hebben ons concert gedaan in de Amuz en dat is dan wereldwijd uitgezonden. En dan hebben wij een zoom panel gedaan vanuit Antwerpen en we hebben super veel reacties gekregen van ‘ik was helemaal ontroerd', ‘dat heeft echt iets in mij aangewakkerd om nog meer te willen doen dan dat ik nu bezig ben',.. Dus dat was voor ons overweldigend. En hoe groot zijn jullie als orkest? Dat hangt van project tot project af. Met ons allereerste project waren we met 140 in de Elisabethzaal. Dat is een volledig symfonisch orkest. Ja. Ik kan me voorstellen dat mannen ook wel graag eens willen aansluiten omdat het over unieke werken gaat ook die je speelt? Dat is zo. Ons grote project dat we gaan doen in Londen (hopelijk), gaat een beetje een mix zijn van drie verschillende orkesten waardoor we een soort van fiftyfifty gelijke verdeling willen. Mijn boodschap is altijd geweest: zolang dat we niet zien dat er – en dan heb ik het niet enkel over België maar in Europa - dat het echt goed is op vlak van gendergelijkheid, gaan we onze opzet niet veranderen. Onze boodschap blijft hetzelfde en het is vooral ook als rolmodellen. En dat is een heel groot ding. Ik heb heel veel vrouwen geïnterviewd voor mijn thesis. Ik heb een enquête gemaakt waar er meer dan 500 mensen hebben op hebben gereageerd en daarin hoorde ik van elke vrouw ‘ik heb nooit een rolmodel gehad om naar op te kijken'. En ik heb zoiets van: bij ons in het orkest zie je bij elk instrument een vrouw. Dat doen we voor elk klein meiske dat komt kijken: dat zij zichzelf op het podium ziet. Ik vind dat heel belangrijk, want ik had dat zelf ook niet. Ik heb pas op mijn dertien jaar een vrouw aan de contrabas gezien en dat was voor mij het leukste ding op de wereld op dat moment. Hetzelfde fenomeen - en ik denk dat je een heel belangrijk punt aanhaalt – hetzelfde fenomeen doet zich op grote schaal voor bij heel veel mensen die vandaag kansen missen. En als we even naar het thema kansarmoede bijvoorbeeld zouden kijken: jongeren die opgroeien in een omgeving van kansarmoede die hebben zelfs bij hun studiekeuze worden ze onbewust daardoor beïnvloed: dat ze denken en ervan overtuigd zijn dat een aantal beroepen voor hen gewoon niet haalbaar zijn. Dat ze dat niet kunnen. Omdat die gewoon die rolmodellen in hun omgeving nergens hebben. En zij zien wel allerlei mensen dat doen, maar ze gaan ervan uit dat die allemaal beschikken over weet ik veel gaven en achtergronden waar zij nooit bij terecht kunnen. Dus ik vraag mij dan tegelijkertijd af: jullie focussen nu terecht op vrouwen in het orkest, maar dat is nog altijd een hele brede waaier. Om dat even te challengen: zijn het allemaal witte vrouwen waar je mee werkt? Hoe kan je ook binnen dat gegeven toch nog uw rol van rolmodellen zo breed mogelijk invullen? Zo divers mogelijk en ook zo inclusief mogelijk. Los van het feit dat mannen er dan niet bij mogen. Dat is iets waar ik al heel veel over heb nagedacht. Eén van de projecten die wij heel graag willen verwezenlijken – waarvoor ik nog altijd op zoek ben naar bepaalde organisaties – is om te werken met ons orkest om vrouwelijke componisten te engageren om stukken te schrijven voor bepaalde instrumententypes die niet van de westerse wereld zijn. Om te kijken naar: zijn er vrouwen in vluchtelingenkampen bijvoorbeeld of in kansarmoede die een ontzettende  gave hebben ondanks dat die misschien nooit niet naar een muziekschool zijn geweest, om die ofwel mee te betrekken als een soort van coaching workshop mee in het orkest tussen de andere muzikanten te zitten, of zelfs zodanig dat er een concerto wordt geschreven waar dat zij de solist mogen zijn. Waar zij hun instrument, dat wij niet kennen, dan niet in het symfonisch repertoire zit, om daarin samen te werken met een componiste.  Dat is een project dat wij op poten willen zetten. Maar heel moeilijk voor ons is om die vrouwen te vinden. Ja, maar dan leg je de lat ineens al hoog. Dan moet het al gaan over instrumenten die heel uniek zijn. Als je nu kijkt naar de instrumenten waar je vandaag in het orkest mee speelt: je doet dat in Antwerpen, er is daar een grote diversiteit aan inwoners, bereik je die ook? Mik je daarop? Ja, buiten die mannen willen wij niemand.. Vrouwen van alle leeftijden, alle culturen, alle seksuele voorkeur, alles, iedereen is welkom. En dat zeg ik altijd. Want is het enige dat wij vragen is dat ze een korte opname sturen of dat ze eens langskomen – dat kan ook als je geen opnameapparatuur hebt. Of je kan zelfs even met je gsm iets opnemen.. Ik wil gerust eens langskomen om te luisteren naar hoe je speelt. Ik sta voor alles open. Ik krijg ook heel regelmatig in mijn inbox ‘ik heb jullie orkest ontdekt, mag ik eens meespelen?' En dan komt die persoon op mijn lange lijst. En elk project sturen wij eerst naar onze vaste kern en als ik dan zie dat het niet gevuld geraakt of wanneer we een groot project hebben, dan moeten wij buiten onze vaste kern kijken. En ik heb een lijst van ondertussen 150 vrouwen, en ik stuur die mail naar al die vrouwen: iedereen die kan, iedereen die wil, kom join. Laten we hier iets mooi van maken. De cultuur binnen ons orkest is voornamelijk wit, dat is helemaal correct. Maar wat ook is.. Je hebt de kansentarieven: dat heb je niet voor alles. Vorig jaar hebben wij samengewerkt met een Blinken loket, die zitten overal in Antwerpen en dat zijn mensen in kansarmoede of die het wat minder hebben die dan naar dat loket komen en dan wordt er reclame gemaakt voor bijvoorbeeld  sportactiviteiten of concerten of comedy shows of workshops. Waar zij dan gratis of aan een heel laag tarief aan kunnen deelnemen. We hebben voor ons concert toen samengewerkt – dat was een concert in Schouwburg Noord in Merksem - met het Blinken loket in Merksem en dan konden ze voor  € 3,5 komen kijken naar ons concert terwijl dat daar normaal tickets waren aan € 17. Dat vond ik een hele belangrijke. Iedereen moet welkom zijn in klassieke muziek, want dat is iets heel elitair. Ik ben naar de opera geweest vorige week. Het goedkope ticket daar was € 30 om op een plaats te zitten waar je alleen maar kan luisteren en niks kan zien. En dan dacht ik van hier is toch wel iets verkeerd. Vroeger in de geschiedenis was de parterre waar het plebs zat, de luidruchtige mensen.. die gooiden de tomaten op het podium.. en de elite die zat dan helemaal vanboven omdat die dan konden neerkijken op het gewone volk. Terwijl nu is het helemaal omgekeerd, dan betaal je bijna € 200 om in die parterre en je betaalt € 30 om niets te zien.. Waar is het mis gegaan? Voor mij is muziek zoiets universeel. Iedereen heeft een band met muziek. Iedereen. Elke persoon op de planeet heeft een band met muziek. Ik heb wel nog een vraag.  Want de genderrollen in onze samenleving zijn ook nog altijd een beetje klassiek: van vrouwen wordt altijd meer verwacht in de zin van op de kinderen letten, meer deeltijdse arbeid. Jullie orkest is dat op vrijwillige basis of betalend? Het allereerste concert dat wij hadden in Elisabethzaal dan was ik student dus ik had geen geld en ik moest een Elisabethzaal betalen dus ik heb toen een crowdfunding gelanceerd die we hebben binnengehaald. Maar iedereen, zelfs de professionele muzikanten hebben toen op vrijwillige basis meegedaan. En dat waren tien repetities! Die waren er allemaal altijd en dat gaf voor mij ook zo'n gevoel van ‘ja ok, dit is nodig en dit is echt iets dat mensen willen' ook qua muzikanten. Daarna is het altijd mijn bedoeling geweest en heb ik ook altijd mijn muzikanten betaald. Altijd een soort van minimum. Ik probeer hen altijd meer te betalen. Funding is heel moeilijk in cultuur, we weten het allemaal: subsidies en dergelijke - vooral in Antwerpen niet zo fantastisch. Dat is voor ons een heel groot probleem. Maar zelfs al hebben we geen geld, proberen we toch geld te vinden want we betalen altijd onze muzikanten. En passen jullie je repetitieregime aan? Zodanig dat er mogelijkheden zijn voor vrouwen om zoveel mogelijk wel te participeren – al schipperend met al hun andere rollen? Ja inderdaad dat doen wij. Ik geef zelf ook les in de academie. Wanneer is dat? Altijd 's avonds – late namiddag of 's avonds. Dus wanneer doen wij meestal onze repetities? In de ochtend in de week. Want dan zijn de kinderen meestal afgezet op school en moet er niet lesgegeven worden of niets. De meeste muzikanten zijn vrij op bijvoorbeeld maandagochtend. Dat was voor ons een groot experiment. We hebben samen met de dirigente beslist in de vorige drie projecten om altijd in de ochtend te repeteren zo van 9 tot 1.  En dat was altijd een hele mooie moment, dan konden altijd de meeste mensen komen. In ons orkest hebben we een leeftijdsverschil van 18 tot 72. Dus het zijn niet alleen maar jonge mensen. Er zit een veel jonge mensen in natuurlijk, maar het is echt van all walks of life. En dat vind ik heel tof. Want als je dan een wat oudere dame hebt die dan naast iemand jong zit: die leren van zoveel van elkaar. Van de oudere generatie leer je heel veel, maar zij leren ook veel van die nieuwe generatie en dat is zo'n een leerrijke omgeving. En Pascale Van Os, onze dirigente, die doet dat zo goed. Die zorgt echt voor een sfeer binnen dat orkest waar dat je echt zo het gevoel hebt van ik ben thuis: ik ben volledig mezelf. Wel fijn, dat je even verwijst naar het feit dat zij zoveel van elkaar leren dan, die verschillende generaties. Dat sluit mooi aan bij een project dat we zelf aan het doen zijn om in organisaties inderdaad ook buddy paren te vormen van oudere werknemers waar vaak zo'n beetje de vraag is van  hoe zorg je ervoor dat mensen zo lang mogelijk mee aan de slag kunnen blijven. Om hen in buddy paren te laten samen lopen met jongere werknemers en hetzelfde te bewerkstelligen, wat jij nu net zegt. Eline, wat is t volgende project? Wanneer kunnen we eens komen luisteren? Ik ben bezig met iets helemaal anders dan wat we ooit al gedaan hebben. Het zal doorgaan op verschillende data, de data zijn nog to be determined, dat zal ergens november – december zijn. Het is een project genaamd ‘La Vie d'une Femme'  en wij werken samen met een folk zangeres Aurelie Dorzee,  ze is haar muziek aan het bewerken voor strijkers om haar folkmuziek om te zetten in iets meer symfonisch en een verhaal te vertellen over de verschillende fases in een vrouw haar leven -  van geboorte tot sterfte en alles in between. Allemaal verschillende vrouwen in walks of live die super vrolijk zijn, voor wie het niet mee zit, alles erop en eraan en ertussen. Dat is ons eerstvolgende project. Dus dat is heel spannend. En volgend jaar, 24 februari in de blauwe zaal van de Singel komt a Night at The Opera, waarvoor we samenwerken met de Soroptimist organisatie. Het gaat een beetje een benefietconcert zijn en zij doen altijd een benefiet voor een organisatie die vrouwen en kinderen steunt. Zij hebben ons uitgenodigd om het concert te verzorgen. En het wordt een Night at the Opera waar we een draai geven aan het concert waar iedereen heel graag naartoe gaat, met die bekende aria's. Maar wij gaan natuurlijk allemaal aria's en duetten brengen van vrouwelijke componisten en hun opera's. En we gaan een wedstrijd doen voor jonge vrouwelijke zangeressen en mannelijke zangers om te komen zingen op het podium met deze werken. Als een kans om echt eens  een ander repertoire te kunnen zingen met een symfonisch orkest in de blauwe Zaal wat een prachtige zaal is om het te doen. Artemis, wat is jouw afsluitende vraag? Daarjuist Eline vertelde jij mij iets over dat er wedstrijden zijn voor assistent dirigenten bijvoorbeeld? En dan heb je die betrekking voor een jaar. Dus het arbeidsregime in de muziekwereld.. ik zou bijna willen zeggen dat iedereen die met muziek professioneel bezig is, is eigenlijk een soort van ondernemer, heeft een soort van portfolio aan jobs. Je bent nooit alleen maar muzikant in een orkest. Je doet altijd ook nog iets in een ensemble, je geeft les.. Is dat zo? Ja, enorm. Ik ken heel weinig mensen die enkel maar een ding doen als muzikant. Dat geldt zelfs mensen die echt heel populair zijn. Je hebt natuurlijk een Yo Yo Ma die is altijd een solist maar de meeste – ik zou zeggen 95% van de muzikanten – hebben bijvoorbeeld hun eigen strijkkwartet en die zijn kei goed bezig, maar die gaan ook nog bij de eerste violen of tweede violen zitten dat orkest. En die gaan dan misschien nog viool lesgeven daar of aan een conservatorium of in een academie of zo. Bijvoorbeeld ik geef les notenleer en contrabas en dan ben ik bezig met mijn eigen orkest. Ik heb ook nog een ander ensemble waar dat ik mee bezig ben en ik speel dan ook nog als freelancer. Als ze iemand zoeken en ze vragen mij en ik ben beschikbaar, dan ga ik daar mee meespelen. Dus je doet heel veel. Dus als ge zo een CV ziet van een muzikant tegenover die van iemand anders dan heeft die altijd heel veel pagina's aan masterclasses en concerten. Ja, je bent heel projectmatig aan het werk heel de tijd. Ja. En dus inderdaad, dat zijn allemaal creatieve ondernemers. En in jouw lessen notenleer en contrabas, zijn er daar veel meisjes? Ja, eigenlijk wel. In mijn notenleer lessen denk ik dat we zelfs met meer meisjes zitten dan jongens op deze moment. En in de contrabas les? Ik heb 4 leerlingen contrabas – ik heb de contrabas les opgestart in die academie want dat was er nog niet – en ik heb dus 4 leerlingen, wat veel is voor een instrument dat niet piano is of gitaar. En mijn leerlingen zijn vier meisjes / dames. Ja wow. De jongens mochten niet meedoen van u? Jawel jawel. Het is heel absurd. Voor mijn leerkracht vroeger - dat was een hele grote man – heb ik eens zijn instrumentenvoorstelling gedaan. Nadat ik gespeeld had zijn er 30 kinderen het instrument komen proberen, waarvan drie jongens en 27 meisjes. Rolmodel, voilà. Terwijl wanneer hij dat deed, je beduidend meer jongens zag dan meisjes. Seg en Eline, als er gekandideerd wordt voor een positie in een orkest, zijn die audities dan blind? Is dat achter een gordijn? Ja. Dus daar zouden de stereotypen – als die er zijn – en de onbewuste biases tegenover vrouwelijke instrumentalisten niet mogen bestaan. Zogezegd. Want ik heb ook al veel verhalen gehoord waar dat dan uiteindelijk een vrouw gekozen werd en dan komt dat bij de dirigent. En dan zegt-ie ‘we hebben al genoeg vrouwen, pak maar iemand anders'.  Want aan het einde krijg je wel de naam en zo te zien dus dan is heel dat proces voor niets. En dat is niet bij iedereen zo maar er zijn jammer genoeg nog altijd zo van die voorvallen waaruit er dan een vrouwen uiteindelijk winnen en dan vooral koperblazers en zo ‘ik moet geen vrouw daar hebben op die positie'. En dat zijn meestal ja dirigenten die dan van landen komen die minder vrouwvriendelijk zijn waar je dat dan het meeste bij ziet. Waar droom jij van? Voor mezelf of mijn orkest? Voor uzelf. Waar ik mee bezig ben is voor mij zo belangrijk, die inclusie. Ik droom van een tijd waarin muzikanten en iedereen gewoon zichzelf mogen zijn. En dat er geen bias niet meer is. En dat je gewoon zonder blind te moeten staan, dat gij gewoon in al uw glorie, daar uzelf kunt uitleven en dat ze gewoon een keuze maken puur op uw talent en niet op u gender of u afkomst of uw voorkeuren. Dat is mijn droom. Conflict is the norm, uncertainty is the future, and Covid has wreaked havoc on every aspect of life, particularly affecting young people, for the past three years. The U.S. Surgeon General has warned of a crippling mental health crisis affecting our youth. Enter Soroptimist International, a volunteer group founded in 1921 with clubs in 121 countries that is dedicated to the advancement of women and girls. Each year, Soroptimist International hosts the Dream It, Be It, conference, where young women of high school age are offered sessions to learn about career options, career skills and planning, time management, resilience strategies, and more.  Nancy Staich, a Soroptimist volunteer, notes that it's important that young women know it's okay to reinvent themselves as life changes. Evolution is natural and it's never too late to take a new path and recreate yourself. Nancy adds that the need for resilience is never ending, and building a supportive tribe is equally essential for a young woman's current and future success. We were blessed to be able to share Brilliantly Resilient with this amazing group of young women and provide tips to Reset with Resilience, Rise and Reveal their Brilliance. The quote above was from a young lady who came to us immediately after our presentation to affirm that it's important to remind our young people of their strengths and continue to provide them with tools and mentors to grow towards success. In questa edizione ci occupiamo di disparità tra uomo e donna, e lo facciamo sulla scorta dello studio ‘PROMO Femina', curato dall'Ufficio cantonale di coordinamento per le pari opportunità in collaborazione con la Scuola universitaria professionale, secondo cui solo il 14% dei sindaci grigionesi nel 2022 erano donne. E se la presenza femminile negli Esecutivi e nei Legislativi comunali sale al 21%, è comunque inferiore alla media svizzera, pari a circa il 25%. In generale l'indagine ha dimostrato che attualmente circa la metà dei comuni grigionesi fatica a reclutare candidati e soprattutto candidate perché sono davvero poche le donne che decidono di darsi alla politica.Di qui il tour grigionese di “PROMO femina” che mira a presentare soluzioni e a rispondere alle domande delle donne che vorrebbero impegnarsi di più nell'amministrazione del bene comune.Nostra ospite è Beatrice Tognola Giudicetti, tra le fondatrici del Soroptimist international club Moesano, un club che coinvolge solo donne. Ascolteremo anche le testimonianze della consigliera nazionale bregagliotta Anna Giacometti e di Silva Semadeni.

Penny Babb is from the United States where she was raised an Illinois farm girl but has made her home in the Phoenix, Arizona area for over thirty years. She earned Bachelor's degrees in Criminal Justice Studies, Sociology, and African American Studies; and a Master of Educational Leadership. She became a Deputy Sheriff with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in Arizona where she met her husband of 34 years. Their son is also in law enforcement serving as a criminal prosecutor of gang related crimes. Penny retired in 2009 as a Deputy Sheriff Captain after twenty-five years of service in areas such as major felony investigations, patrol and detective division commander, and training commander. Three years after retiring, Penny became the Director of Law Enforcement Operations at Glendale Community College managing their police academies, advanced training for law enforcement officers, firearms classes for citizens, and dispatcher training courses. She retired again in 2020. Ten years after joining Soroptimist in 1998, Penny was elected to the Golden West Region board and became the 2016-2018 Governor overseeing 45 clubs in four states. Penny was elected to the Soroptimist International of the Americas Board of Directors for 2018-2020 and is serving on a taskforce to develop the Northern Philippines Region. She was elected as SIA President-elect for 2019-2020 and is presently the SIA President for 2020-2021 where she oversees clubs in twenty-one countries. She is passionate about Soroptimist, serving her community, volunteering at church, and experiencing different cultures. And, she is passionate about helping women achieve their dreams. Penny and her family love to travel. In the last few years, she has visited South Africa, Israel, Jordan, Japan, Germany and the Philippines.

Today, Tes talks with Bette Levy. Bette has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio University and a Masters of Arts & a Masters of Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to retiring in 2011, she worked for the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) for 38 years with primary expertise in children/ families and residential care. She was responsible for the development of a family & Youth advocacy movement. She was also responsible for developing national program guidelines for children's residential care. Her secondary expertise at OMH was Disaster Risk Reduction. On September 11th, her office was forced into action due to the terrorist attacks and she served for 10 years as the lead disaster mental health & emergency preparedness liaison for NY State OMH to NYC Office of Emergency Management, NYS Emergency Management Office and to US Department of Homeland Security. After retiring, she became an independent Management & Culture Change Consultant as well as a consultant at the US Department of Health & Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services and the Building Bridges Initiative, where she was responsible for developing and facilitating a National Youth Advisory Council. She has been the author or contributor to chapters in several books, guidelines, tip sheets and articles on working with youth and their families in residential care and Peer movements (youth & family). She also served as a consultant to the US Department of Justice, Fraud Division for Children's residential care services. Her role at the UN/NY, is as SI's Main Representative and serves as Special Advisor to the International President for Relationships & Strategic Planning. Life is process, change inherent in all we do. All is changing and we are a part of an evolving experiment, an unfolding process from birth to death and the mystery of before and after. Yet we become attached to something or someone and want to freeze frame moments. We hope to hold on to the good and yet hurry the difficult away. Joan Stanford loves the quote, “Sometimes the best thing to do when it is raining is it to let it rain.” We cannot change that about ourselves but it is helpful to remember everything is always moving. Our intentions matter and our responses to what arises as well. And it is helpful to recall that joy in process. For Joan, playing with art materials allows that. Taking their advise, today I'll be speaking with Dr. Jean Skillman about what it means to live a healthy life from the perspective of a physician.  Jean graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1971 and has been practicing as a family doctor ever since. Her career has included lead roles in long term care,  hospital settings, and chronic care,  and she has most recently specialized in providing home visits to those who are in a frail state and can’t come to the Two Rivers Family Health Team clinic in Cambridge Ontario. Jean has also been a passionate volunteer with for over 35 years - advocating to improve lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment.
