In this inspiring podcast episode, Soroptimist International President Siew Yong Gnanalingam shares her deep personal connection to the environment and why protecting Mother Earth is so close to her heart. She reflects on growing up surrounded by nature and how that shaped her values and commitment to sustainability. At home, she takes small but meaningful actions—like reducing plastic use and conserving energy—to live more mindfully. As SI President, she has placed climate change at the centre of her advocacy, urging Soroptimists to act locally while thinking globally. One of her key initiatives has been raising awareness about the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and girls. She now calls on Soroptimists around the world to help create a powerful legacy by submitting short video clips of the environmental work they are doing. Whether it's tree planting, recycling drives, or renewable energy projects—every contribution counts. The best clips will be featured in a special SI climate action video to be shared on 24 October, the International Day of Climate Action. Full video guidelines and submission details are available on the Soroptimist International website: www.soroptimistinternational.org. Let's unite for our planet and let the world see what Soroptimists can do!

Talking Taiwan

March is Women's History Month and in this episode of Talking Taiwan I'll be speaking with the Angela Feng, the organizer of the Empowering Women Through Education and Community Action panel, a UN CSW69 Parallel Event that's going to be held here in New York City on Friday, March 14th from 4:30pm-6:00pm. CSW69 stands for the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Also with me in this interview are the other two panelists Cindy Wu who's been a previous guest on Talking Taiwan and Dr. Remi Duyile.   There are quite a few acronyms tossed around in this conversation so I thought I'd mention them upfront here like SDG goals, which stands for Sustainable Development Goals which were adopted by United Nations Member States. There are 17 SDGs because ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.   The other acronym you'll hear is BPW which stands for Business and Professional Women.   The theme of the panel is how education and community initiatives equal empowerment. The session will dive into how education and grassroots programs can transform lives.   Angela, Cindy and Dr. Remi not only talked about the panel, and work of their respective organizations, but I ask each of the women who were their earliest role models who helped to shape who they are today, and to share about challenges that they've had to overcome in their careers thus far.   If you'd like to know how you can attend the Empowering Women Through Education and Community Action panel visit TalkingTaiwan.com where we'll share a link to register for it on Eventbrite.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: ·  Angela Feng, Cindy Wu, and Dr. Remi Duyile are the organizers and panelists for the Empowering Women Through Education and Community Action Panel. ·  The panel's theme is "How Education and Community Initiatives Equal Empowerment." ·  The session will explore how education and grassroots programs can significantly transform lives, particularly for women and girls. ·  Angela Feng is the president of Soroptimist Taipei International, Girls Power, a female non-profit organization recognized by the UN and Taiwan. ·  Cindy Wu is a trilingual financial management professional, singer-songwriter, and motivational speaker, involved with the International Federation of Business and Professional Women (BPW). ·  Dr. Remi Duyile is a Nigerian-American, a UN ambassador of peace, and the founder of Legacy Premier Foundation, a global developmental non-profit. ·  The discussion will delve into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how these goals relate to women's empowerment ·  Angela, Cindy and Dr. Remi the work that they have done with each of their respective organizations ·  Angela, Cindy and Dr. Remi talked about their early role models and the challenges they have overcome in their careers. ·  The panel aims to provide practical insights and inspire action, moving beyond abstract concepts of women's empowerment. ·  The women want to provide action steps, and resources to the audience ·  Soroptimist International of Taipei Girls Power focuses on education for young women, from elementary school through college. ·  The Legacy Premier Foundation focuses on financial literacy, and providing access to resources to underserved communities, and teaches skills that are needed in the market place. ·  The International Federation of Business and Professional Women works to create opportunities for women through promoting employment, and protecting rights.   Related Links:

Her mother called her Robin because she was like a breath of spring Although she grew up poor, she learned from her mother that you don't have to act poor; that you should always dress decently and stand up for what you believe in. From her father, she learned the value of friendships, family and loyalty and from mentor Peggy Murray, that you are special! From her special family, Glen and Helen Armitage that you don't have to be blood to be family. From all of them she learned a strong work ethic and to pay it forward. When her husband died, leaving her with two wonderful very young children, she was twenty-six. She learned how short life can be and how important it is to share your love every day. From Murray, her loving current spouse she has learned the value of sharing everything. She has always stood up for what she believed in even when it wasn't the popular thing to do. She sent her son to the first French immersion school and bore much criticism in small city Red Deer. She fought for money in Red Deer minor hockey for kids who couldn't afford to play (even to the point of crying at a meeting, much to her chagrin) and was among the initial supporters of CAWES, Soroptimist International of Central Alberta and Magdalena House. The most important things in her life are her family, her faith, friends and she has a formidable belief in “paying it forward.” www.partylite.ca/robina

Dominika Turkcan, from Mothers' Day Movement (MDM) joins Yo in this episode. The Mothers' Day Movement is an organization that grew out of a column in The New York Times by Nicholas Kristof, where he made the case for moving the apostrophe in Mother's Day so it honors not just one mother, but underserved mothers everywhere. It advocates to shift a portion of Mother's Day gift giving to a carefully selected charity each year in honor of the women or person they love.   Since 2011, the group has raised over $900,000, in women's health, education, infant and maternal mortality, clean water, and human trafficking, and has been featured in The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, and NPR.   During the episode we explored what happened in 2022 with Kenya Connect and their plans for 2023 with their beneficiary, Saving Mothers, a global non-profit dedicated to eradicating preventable maternal deaths and birth-related complications among marginalized women.   Here are the 3 Takeaways from the Episode:   1.   For the price of a bouquet of flowers, we can save a life by donating to MDM. 2.   Currently in the United States, Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to suffer a pregnancy-related death than white women. Specifically in NYC, Black mothers are 9X more likely to die giving birth. Yet, 80% of these deaths are preventable.    3.    Our donation to MDM can help achieve Saving Mothers' vision of a world where every woman – regardless of her ethnicity or socioeconomic status – has access to quality reproductive healthcare services, and receives proper medical attention for complications of pregnancy and childbirth.   We hope you'll enjoy this episode! I just wanted to say that I really needed to hear this today. I'm going through something and I really needed to hear that I can do it. Thank you. ~ Attendee from Soroptimist “Dream It, Be It” Conference for Girls  It's not easy to be a young person today. Conflict is the norm, uncertainty is the future, and Covid has wreaked havoc on every aspect of life, particularly affecting young people, for the past three years. The U.S. Surgeon General has warned of a crippling mental health crisis affecting our youth. Enter Soroptimist International, a volunteer group founded in 1921 with clubs in 121 countries that is dedicated to the advancement of women and girls. Each year, Soroptimist International hosts the Dream It, Be It, conference, where young women of high school age are offered sessions to learn about career options, career skills and planning, time management, resilience strategies, and more.  Nancy Staich, a Soroptimist volunteer, notes that it's important that young women know it's okay to reinvent themselves as life changes. Evolution is natural and it's never too late to take a new path and recreate yourself. Nancy adds that the need for resilience is never ending, and building a supportive tribe is equally essential for a young woman's current and future success. We were blessed to be able to share Brilliantly Resilient with this amazing group of young women and provide tips to Reset with Resilience, Rise and Reveal their Brilliance. The quote above was from a young lady who came to us immediately after our presentation to affirm that it's important to remind our young people of their strengths and continue to provide them with tools and mentors to grow towards success. We all have a responsibility to equip our youth with the tools and strategies needed for success. Get involved and make a difference. Tune into this episode of the Brilliantly Resilient podcast to learn more, and be sure to look out for these additional bits of brilliance: We want girls to think about what they want. What am I really passionate about? What do I care about? We want girls to remember that they're bringing their entire selves to work. They have to see themselves as whole people. It's okay to recreate yourself when you need to recreate yourself. It's never too late. We want the girls to build a tribe and talk to people who can help them learn and grow. There are mentors out there who want to help. Learn more about Soroptimist International of Indian Rock at: www.investindreams.org Let's be Brilliantly Resilient together! Mary Fran & Kristin
