Dr. Phillips was the first black professor at George Fox University and her kids were the first black students to enroll in Newberg's public schools, back when racism was much more prevalent than today. But despite the opposition and racism she and her family faced, Dr. Phillips decided to respond with love and forgiveness and continues to facilitate reconciliation to this day. Dr. Phillips has also written numerous books and founded Women, Men, Youth of Purpose International. In this episode, Dr. Stephen Phillips shares about his first year as Superintendent of Newberg's school district and why he believes there is hope for the district's future. In 2022, Dr. Phillips (or Steve, as he prefers to be called) joined the school district during a season of heavy controversy, turmoil, and staff turnover. While there were many challenges faced at the beginning of the school year, Steve says he and his family are happy and that he has a bright outlook for the future. Steve also addressed concerns that parents have, misconceptions about the district, ways the community can get involved, and what it will take to help our students thrive.In addition, Steve shared about the upcoming school board election and the forum event on April 15th, 2023 where the community can hear directly from the candidates.
