jarasaseasongi - muzyczne historie

Charleston w Karolinie Południowej. Tam od 1912 roku w budynku starej przędzalni bawełny, American Tobacco Company produkuje cygara. W fabryce panuje segregacja rasowa. W 1948 roku podczas kampanii prezydenckiej Henry'ego  Wallace'a wydrukował „We Will Overcome”. W 1950 jeszcze pod tytułem „We Will Overcome” piosenkę nagrał Joe Glaze. W 1957  Seegera słuchał Martin Luther King i „We Shall Overcome” utkwiła mu w pamięci. Kiedy Highlander Folk School była nękana przez naloty policji tamtejsza młodzież dodawała sobie otuchy śpiewając „We Shall Overcome”, nadając jej jednocześnie takie brzmienie jakie znamy dzisiaj. Piosenka zyskała status protestsongu. W 1963 podczas marszu na Waszyngton razem z Joan Baez „We Shall Overcome” śpiewa 300 tysięczny tłum. 2 lata później piosenkę cytuje Prezydent Lyndon Johnson w przemówieniu do uczestników słynnego marszu z Selmy do Montgomery. Sail-Ho   Audycja zawiera utwory: “We Shall Overcome” (w tle), wyk.  Charlie Haden & Hank Jones muzyka: trad. “We Shall Overcome”, wyk. Just before Hitler rose to power, Isay Rottenberg, then living in Amsterdam, made an unusual move. Rather than flee the area, he moved to Germany, buying Europe's most modern cigar factory. In a move that branded him as a sort of reverse–Oskar Schindler, he employed 670 non-Jewish workers and grew his business profitably, refusing to move until the Nazi government forced him to sell his factory and threw him in prison. Isay Rottenberg and his family survived the war, moving back to Amsterdam afterwards. But he never went public with his remarkable story. After he died, two of his granddaughters—both Dutch journalists—discovered the story and wrote a book about him. Now, the book has finally been released in English in Canada, where some of his descendents now live. Robert Rotenberg, the author of a best-selling crime novel series, and his cousin Michael Levine, one of the country's most prominent book agents, have collaborated to bring the story of their relative's cigar factory to the English-speaking world, and join The CJN Daily to talk about their journey. Nazareth punk band The Road Sodas are no strangers to controversy. The night before recording this Rooftop Session with us in October 2018, the band had an annual benefit show in their hometown shut down by the police. Simply put, the four members of the Road Sodas know how to put on a memorable show. In their interview, they describe playing live as their favorite part of being a band and they brought that enthusiasm to the Cigar Factory roof for our session. The band powered through four songs and didn’t stop before launching into a fifth. Enjoy that bonus track not heard on the on-air broadcast. Also on the show, we preview songs from the bands coming to the next event in the Tape Swap Presents concert series at Lit Roastery in Bethlehem on February 7, 2019: Philadelphia synth pop outfit Pool Radio, fellow Philly artist Lexi Campion of Grayling, and Jordan from Kutztown aka The Most Beautiful Images. We wrap up the show with Shamus’ interview with Jamie Holmes, the owner of Double Decker Records in Allentown. They discuss Double Decker’s 22 year journey from underground DIY punk meeting place in the late 90’s to the current wave of vinyl resurgence in the 2010’s. Jamie also picks out songs to listen to from some of his favorite Lehigh Valley DIY bands throughout the years.

Spread across Northeast PA and the Lehigh Valley are the four members of Under the Clothesline, a sleazy garage psych band who have begun to make an impression on the Valley’s music fans in the last couple of years. Under the Clothesline wear their music’s grime on their sleeves, sounding dirty and dingy with a disarmingly relaxed vocal style that seems to hint at something sinister lurking just beneath the surface. The band has previously performed at one of Tape Swap's shows at the Ice House in Bethlehem and our stage at Allentown ArtsFest. The band joined us on the Cigar Factory roof on a cold, windy day in April 2018. We also feature interviews and song selections from some of the young up-and-comers behind new ventures in the Valley's DIY music scene. First, Chandler Davis, Zak Gerhart, and Pat Lilly from multi-media production company Lab Two Twelve stop by. Then, later in the show, we pick up on that conversation with Chris Kennedy from DIY Easton show space Live at 13.

At 2018’s Puro Sabor festival in Estelí, Nicaragua, Carlito Fuente of Arturo Fuente cigars dropped a bomb of an announcement. The Fuente cigar family — known for its Dominican-made cigars — let the cat out of the bag about its plans to open a cigar factory in Estelí. The Fuentes don’t do anything halfway, which means that this one company is looking to change the landscape of Nicaraguan cigars. What’s more, Carlito announced that the person running the Fuentes’ Nicaraguan operations from seed to cigar would be Félix Mesa. There’s a chance you’ve heard the name. Felix is the owner of El Galán Cigars, which has a small factory in Estelí, as well as a retail store near the CIgar Snob offices. Félix isn’t a household name in the cigar world, so when people learned that the guy at the helm of what’s sure to be a massive operation would be a relative unknown, it generated even more questions. On a recent trip to the Dominican Republic, I had a chance to sit with Carlito Fuente and get deeper into the story. Why Nicaragua? Why now? Why Félix Mesa? And what should smokers expect to see coming out of this expansion and into their humidors? This interview is the first time Carlito’s gone into this level of detail with any cigar media. Cigar of the Week - 7-20-4 from KA Kendall. Kurt Kendall has been a long time cigar smoker and tobacconist with a strong sense of history. For several years he looked upon the once proud cigar factory at 175 Canal Street in Manchester, NH that housed the R.G. Sullivan 7-20-4 Cigar Factory, maker of fine $.10 cigars. The factory name of 7-20-4 was taken from the original location of the R.G. Sullivan factory at 724 Elm Street. According to Tony Hyman, the brand prospered from about 1910 until closing down in 1963. Kurt Kendal has created the new 7-20-4 cigar as a tribute to what was billed as "the finest 10 cent cigar in the world". Kendall worked for two years to recreate, as nearly as possible, the original blend. Hear more about his efforts in the interview later in the show. Available in 5 sizes, Corona, Churchill, Robusto, Torpedo and Gran Toro the line is robust and full flavored with excellent construction and a beautiful Brazilian Mata Fina wrapper, Columbian binder and fillers from several locations. Kurt is serious about the quality of this cigar insisting that is be aged an additional 120 days in the cedar boxes before being sold.
