Jamie Holmes joins Craig to discuss life's admin tasks, her journey through holistic healing from melanoma, and insights into the world of circus arts and personal fitness showcasing her multifaceted life and philosophies. I think it was three months from when I had my first, initial consult with my surgeon, and he said, "okay I can get you in. It's going to be a bit harder because you're doing both hips at once, but I can get you in within three months." And that was horrid to me! I was like, "I have to live three more months like this!?" It wasn't just that it hurt a little bit when I walked— I couldn't move— I could not move— I was having weird panic attacks all the time, because if I dropped something and had to bend over, it was— I'm a bit of a tough cookie, but that? That broke me pretty hard." ~ Jamie Holmes, 35:15 Not your average bears, Craig and Jamie begin in left field discussing ways of managing life's "admin" tasks. Jamie professes integrating everything into her daily flow, rather than reserving them for a single day. Her approach, she explains, allows her to work at a high speed, avoiding the buildup of dreaded tasks. Her method emphasizes efficiency and the mental ease that comes from staying ahead of administrative duties, reflecting a deeper understanding of personal productivity and time management. The conversation shifts into Jamie's profound journey through holistic healing after a melanoma diagnosis. Rejecting traditional treatment paths, Jamie opts for a holistic approach, guided by her conviction in the body's healing capabilities and her passion for health and fitness. This segment of the discussion not only highlights her resilience but also serves as an inspiring testament to the power of our minds and bodies. Jamie also shares insights into the world of circus arts and her studio, The Circus Fix, illuminating the challenges and rewards of managing a fitness and arts studio. Her narrative encompasses the delicate balance of artistic passion with the pragmatism of business management, underscoring the significance of adaptability and understanding in leadership roles. Takeaways Efficiency in daily tasks—integrating administrative duties into everyday life can enhance productivity and reduce stress. Holistic healing approaches—exploring non-traditional methods for dealing with serious health issues, such as melanoma, can lead to personal insights and unexpected journeys. The importance of movement—engaging in physical activities, whether through circus arts or other forms of exercise, is vital for mental and physical health. Adapting to individual needs—understanding and accommodating the unique ways people process and work can lead to better management and teamwork. The value of outdoor activities—spending time in nature, particularly in activities like walking on the beach, can serve as a form of meditation and rejuvenation. Facing life-changing decisions—confronting severe health challenges with courage and openness to unconventional treatments can inspire others. The challenge of balancing—managing a small business, especially in the arts, requires juggling creative passion with the practicalities of administration and leadership. The role of community—creating spaces for learning and growth, such as a circus studio, contributes to the well-being and development of both instructors and students. Personal transformation through adversity—overcoming physical and mental hurdles can lead to profound personal growth and a deeper understanding of one's capacities and resilience. Diagnosed in 2012 at the age of 33, Jamie chose to treat her cancer by focusing on her entire body's health, rather than just fighting the disease. She adopted a holistic approach, utilizing nutrition and natural, non-toxic therapies. Her commitment to this less conventional path of healing was driven by her belief in treating the cancer as a symptom of her whole body being in disarray.   Ten years after her diagnosis, Jamie is now cancer-free and continues to thrive. She has shared her experience and insights in a book titled "Carrots," which details her personal journey and the alternative treatment choices she made. Jamie's story stands as a testament to the potential of holistic healing and the power of viewing and treating the body as an interconnected system References: ===================================== Click here for Dr. J's links: https://www.justinhealth.com/links ===================================== ***Click below to SUBSCRIBE for more Videos http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center... =====================================

From Brian: Two weeks ago today, I lost my job. Two days later my wife, Jamie K. Holmes, lost her job as well. We both loved our jobs, the companies we worked for, and the friendships we built with our co-workers over the years.   Life throws you a wicked curve ball at times and luckily, we have been there to support one another through this challenging time. We're both positive and optimistic our next challenge is just around the corner.   Jamie has 20+ years of experience in the banking and mortgage industries. She has also been trying to get her foot in the door to dentistry as a dental assistant. She also has her educational background and early career in the hospitality industry.   I have worked in 20+ years in IT. The early part of my career focused mainly on systems analyst roles and the latter part of my career in software development (C#). Since the pandemic, I have supported Microsoft Teams and SharePoint. The last 3.5 years, I have drove Lyft on weekend nights and discovered I am just more of an IT "social bug". Therefore, I am trying to focus my career search on more "people facing" roles. My long-term career goal is to get into leadership and management roles. I am looking for that first opportunity which has been difficult.   If you can assist Jamie and I in our job search it would greatly help and would be appreciated. A simple repost, new connection, conversation, or referral goes a long way towards both of us landing our next challenging opportunity.   Thanks for your support and happy holidays all!

Chris McChesney is a Wall Street Journal #1 National Best-Selling Author – The 4 Disciplines of Execution. In his current role of Global Practice Leader of Execution for FranklinCovey, Chris is one of the primary developers of The 4 Disciplines of Execution. Chris shares his thoughts on what it takes to focus, why you shouldn’t wait to innovate, and how to effectively lead in the midst of ambiguity.   Key Takeaways [3:25] Chris discusses whether focus is the key to execution or if there are other factors at play here. [4:35] “Be very deliberate about what is the area of focus and everything else the organization needs to sustain.” [8:00] The four disciplines of execution are: Get clear on the critical target. Leverage your metrics on a team level. Boost employee engagement by showing them the score. Hold people accountable. [14:20] When it comes to defining your target, there needs to be a combination of what’s most important and what’s most at risk. [16:25] If you want innovation, then you have to allow people to experiment, which means taking on a certain amount of team failure. [17:45] It can be so easy to lose focus when you’re trying to experiment on the latest flavor of the month.  [22:25] People aren’t afraid of change. They’re afraid of ambiguity. In every major disaster, there is a spike in divorce rates as well as marriage rates, because people don’t like being in limbo. They need certainty. [24:15] Because of the circumstance we’re in, every industry is being forced to change and switch things up. People are tapped out and being drained from all sides. [29:05] When the status quo is good, it can be hard to push yourself out of your comfort zone to innovate. It comes down to having a weekly discipline. [33:55] Emotion alone will not sustain you in achieving those non-urgent tasks. [37:55] Chris shares the story of his creative and slightly sneaky way of getting to work alongside Stephen Covey when he was a recent college grad. [42:15] Listener challenge: Do the people who work for you feel like they can win?   Quotable Quotes “It’s better to fall in love with the problem than to fall in love with the solution.” “The best strategies, the most vital strategies, don’t stand up to the day-to-day urgency of maintaining the operation.” “You can chase your tail all day long on what’s most important. Everyone’s got a good argument for that.” “If you’re going to have a breakthrough, it’s going to require innovation. And innovation requires trial and error.” “People don’t fear change. In this episode Matt Crawford speaks with Jamie Holmes about his book 12 Seconds of Silence. This is the unbelievable story about the invention of the proximity fuse, what is the fuse and what does it do? In the early days of WWII it took 20,000 shells to shoot down 1 Axis aircraft, this could not stand. The creation of the fuse and the amazing people involved is the story that Holmes recounts in this fantastic and utterly engrossing read. Another example of history at its best!

On this edition of Parallax Views, in June of 1944, shortly after D-Day, the Nazis unleashed a wave of devastation on London with a superweapon. The Allies had expected retaliation from the Axis powers, but they had not expected the death machine that was the V-1 or Vergeltungswaffe (Vengeance Weapon One). Few within the Allied powers thought that they could counteract this new obstacle to defeating the Axis forces. And yet, in a story of human ingenuity defying the odds, a rag tag band of inventors, tinkerers, and spies would ultimately bring about the invention of a fuse device would thwart this Nazi superweapon. In his new book 12 Seconds of Silence: How a Team of Inventors, Tinkerers, and Spies Took Down a Nazi Superweapon, journalist Jamie Holmes, whose work has appeared in such outlets as The New York Times, The New Republic, The Atlantic, and The Daily Beast, brings to light this heretofore overlooked bit of WWII history and, in the process, finds a parable about science, governance, leadership, and human ingenuity that may have something to tell us about how to handle the crisis we face today in the form of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It's a story that includes a Nazi spy ring operating in New York, an scientific advisor to Britain's MI6 intelligence services and the beautiful French spy who aided him, and a small band of scientist who began working with little resources on a small farm in Virginia to stop the Nazi menace. All that and more on this edition of Parallax Views.

It's an absolute honour to be joined by The Lapelles' Chris Ballantyne, Jack Anderson, Jamie Holmes and Leon Green. The Lapelles are, in my opinion, the seminal Scottish band of the 2010s. In their short time together, the boys, alongside their best friend and frontman, Gary Watson, reinvigorated the Scottish music scene with their distinctive brand of indie rock and infectious personality, paving the way for the incredible wave of successful acts that followed them. As many will know, Gary sadly passed away in August of 2016. Although the boys themselves recognise it wasn’t the album they were going to make, The Lapelles released their eponymous album in March of 2017 as a tribute to Gary, and it received universal acclaim. Gary was and remains a hero and icon to music fans across the UK. If you’re an avid listener of TELT or have even listened to the odd episode, you’ll no doubt have heard The Lapelles mentioned frequently. The influence these 5 boys have had on not only their friends and contemporaries but on a generation of aspiring musicians cannot be understated, and they have firmly cemented themselves as one of the most influential Scottish acts since the turn of the millennium. In this episode, we speak in detail about The Lapelles journey from East Kilbride teenagers to one of the most exciting artists to emerge from the UK over the past 10 years. We discuss growing up in East Kilbride & it's influence on their music, songwriting, Postcard Records & Orange Juice, famous headline shows at the 13th Note & Club Sabbath at the Priory, The Spaghetti Factory, 'Seventeen' getting played at half speed on the radio, support slots with The Last Shadow Puppets, The Kooks, Blossoms & The View, 'Grab Life By,' T in the Park, headline tours, friendship, Tenement TV Session, the album, legacy, the future of The Lapelles, what everyone's up to now and, of course, Gary Watson.

We discuss creating their own sound against the backdrop of the Glasgow music scene, favourite Scottish artists, sold out shows in Glasgow and Manchester, influences, recording at Sugar House in St Helens, keeping motivated during lineup changes, what motivates and drives their music, collaborating at 7West Studios with Jamie Holmes and Johnny Madden, train journeys through Wigan, lockdown, latest releases and so much more.

Gary is now a consultant, speaker and author of the book Stalling for Time, part of which forms the basis of a new miniseries on the Paramount Network called “Waco”. Yes, Gary was involved in negotiations with Branch Davidians in the lead up to the 1993 Waco Siege, and his efforts saved lives in the process. Gary talks about that, but this is an episode about so much more. We have a wide-ranging conversation about crisis management, negotiation, the importance of listening, and tons more. I am highly appreciative of Gary coming on to the show and in spite of cold and sore throat, Gary provided an enormous amount of insight into: The different types of hostage negotiations that can happen, including those involving ideology like the Waco siege; The importance of relationships and creating connections in negotiations; Why listening is a fundamental skill in hostage situations; Speaking truth to power; Dealing with nuance and finding common ground; How these skills can be applied to all types of situations; Much more! REFLECTION QUOTES “…sometimes, the illusion of knowing is more dangerous than not knowing at all.” ~Jamie Holmes in Nonsense: The Power of Not Knowing (2015) “Epistemology [i.e. the theory of how we know what we know] is still a central issue in philosophy, and we moderns are particularly vexed with the question of how we can come to know anything outside what we already know, that is, how we can climb out of our own culture's basic assumptions, and how we can hope to see beyond our brains' basic formation.” ~Jennifer Michael Hecht in her book Doubt: A History (2003) “My feelings are not God, God is God. My feelings do not define truth. God's word defines truth. My feelings are echoes and responses to what my mind perceives. And sometimes—many times—my feelings are out of sync with the truth. When that happens—and it happens everyday in some measure—I try not to bend the truth to justify my imperfect feelings, but rather I plead with God. Purify my perceptions of your truth and transform my feelings so that they are in sync with the truth.” ~John Piper, pastor and author “The cross alone is our theology.” “There is not a word in the Bible which is extra crucem, which can be understood without reference to the cross.” ~Martin Luther (1483-1546), famed religious reformer SERMON PASSAGE 1 Peter 1:1-12 (NASB) 1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. 10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.

Today we carry around an almost infinite amount of information in our pockets, allowing us to instantaneously search for answers to almost any question. We hardly ever feel in the dark anymore, and we naturally tend to think that is a good thing. But is it always? In his provocative new book, Nonsense: The Power of Not Knowing, Future Tense Fellow Jamie Holmes argues that our informational instant gratification isn't necessarily making us wiser. He explores the positive role of ambiguity and uncertainty in forcing us to see the world from a fresh perspective, and to think more deeply about the questions before us. Join Future Tense for the launch of Nonsense with a conversation between Jamie Holmes and Maria Konnikova, contributing writer for The New Yorker, on the downside of having the answer to every question at our fingertips. This is a Future Tense event.

Jamie Holmes is a self-made man. Jamie has been a cornerstone in the punk and indie Lehigh Valley PA scene as the owner of Double Decker Records. Double Decker started back in 96 and still going strong. Listen to how Jamie had do duck and weave his way to remain relevant for almost twenty years. There is so much to know, but it remains the same as every other story: the most important tool is flexibility. Jamie knows what he's doing. Then we are joined by his associates Ray Gurz and Chris Bickert. Ray is the leader of the band Tile as well as another called Bad American. (I shoved a Tile song in here for you somewhere...) Chris is not only the nicest guy ever, he's also Braid's tour manager (Don't believe me? Bob Nanna himself said so in Chapter 12.) Plus he brought donuts. These are the people in my neighborhood...in my neighborhood...in my neighborhood...but they're in your neighborhood now, too thanks to the magic of podcasting. Enjoy. (No donuts though...) One more thing: Nate Allen, friend of the show, has a lil' rekkid coming out with his group Nate Allen And The Pac Away Dots. The album is called "Take Out The Trash" and it is available for pre-order right now. It's coming out on Sept 18th. Tell your friends. Nate's a good egg. Buy his album...link is below.
