The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th study session on the late Dr. Maya Angelou's The Heart of A Woman. This is a rare "double dip" for the book club, as we read I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings in the summer of 2014 just after the transition of the famed author and Wake Forest scholar. Gus T. was inundated with the life and literary work of Dr. Angelou during his recent Golden State sojourn. And it took Gus seeing the documentary film Soundtrack to a Coup d'État three times to accurately write down the title Heart of a Woman. The extraordinary film on the assassination of Patrice Lumumba is "receipt-heavy," and Andrée Blouin and Dr. Angelou's respective memoirs are just 2 of the many books in the project. Last week, the late poet an Victim of White Supremacy told us about how she, Abbey Lincoln and other black females of the Cultural Association for Women of African Heritage helped to coordinate a rally on the New York United Nations building. This was in response to the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. Dr. Angelou grabbed a random black "thug" to help escort her into the building. NPR's Terry Gross, a Racist Suspect, interviewed Dr. Angelou in 1981 and confessed that she feared this privileged black "thug" was going to assault and "rape" our heroine in the UN stairwell. Thankfully, everyone kept their pants zipped. In fact, after everything was finished, Dr. Angelou admitted feeling pretty lousy about risking the black fellas' life for her poorly conceived effort. #AppleEvent #SoundtrackToACoupdÉtat #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

About Conny: Conny Goelz Schmitt is a collage artist and sculptor who spent her youth in Germany, moved to Taiwan in her twenties, and relocated to the US in 1996. Having been immersed in three very different cultures, she is drawn to hard edge painting influenced by the German “attention to detail”, the retro color palette reminiscent of Taiwan in the 80s, and the very often experimental and creative pioneering spirit of Americans. Her medium of choice is almost without exception the vintage book. In Germany she studied Sinology and German Literature at Eberhard Karls University in Tuebingen. She was named Sculptor of the Year by Chief Curator of Boston University, Kate McNamara in CAA's 69th Members' Prize Show. In 2016, Paul C. Ha, Director of the List Visual Art Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, selected her work for the Best Multi Media Prize in CAA's National Prize Show. She was awarded a fellowship to the Vermont Studio Center for 2020. An interview with Setiro Paul, former member of the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia and founder of the Chuuk Language and Cultural School on Oʻahu. The Chuuk Language and Cultural Association of Hawaiʻi, Inc.(Chuukmenessor) was founded in January 2016 by parents in the Oʻahu Chuukese community. The group sought to establish a school where their children can learn Chuukese indigenous culture and skills at the Waipahu Safe Haven Immigrant Resource Center, and built an “utteirek,” a meeting place for the community at the Hawaiʻi's Plantation Village. Project partners help to repair the utteirek's thatched roof, made of woven coconut leaves. Through this process, students learn how to build an utteirek and are immersed in the Chuukese language, values, and skills. Website: chuukmenessor.com Tags: Hawaiʻi, Hawai'i, Hawaii

Decades before Route 66 the Mojave Desert Road took travelers miles across the Mojave Desert. Dennis Casebier talks about his original intention of creating a 130 mile hiking trail across the Mojave Desert along one of America's first highway, but realizing that a 4 wheel drive trail would be more practical. Guest Dennis Casebier founded the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association, and he tells the story about converting an old school house into an area museum to promote the rich history of the Mojave area. When you think of Route 66 in the Mohave desert, most people think of Amboy and probably one of the most photographed sites in the mojave. But dennis settled in Goffs, a town about 50 miles NE of Amboy Where he bought and restored an old school house and eventually turned it into a museum to promote a better understaning of areas natural and historical history. Now, I might be a bit parital along with many of my listeners about Route 66, but dennis is a pioneer when it comes to that other road…. The Mojave Road which predates Route 66. Dennis has written many books about the region, documenting every mile of the Mojave Road and there are people out there who will drive the original road in specially equipped vehicles. I’d like to play for you a clip where dennis is talking about his passion for the Mohave Trail Road and how he wanted to preserve and document the road, which was a dirt road that crossed the Mohave way before Route 66 and still exists today in it’s original form- all 130 miles of it. Then, we’re going to jump to where dennis talks about how the area was used as a very important training site for General Patton in preparation for the African invasion during world war 2
