Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box
What happens when you combine creativity, consistency, and the courage to start before you feel ready? This week on the Launch Your Box podcast, I sat down with Kelli Blouin, founder of Minutes of Zen, to talk about her incredible journey from elementary school teacher to subscription box owner with more than 425 subscribers, all in just a few short months. But what makes Kelli's story especially powerful is how she got there. If you've ever wondered whether you're “ready” to launch your subscription box, this episode is one you need to hear. How a Cancer Diagnosis Changed Everything Kelli spent 25 years as an elementary school teacher, balancing work, family life, and all the responsibilities that come with both. But after a breast cancer diagnosis forced her to slow down and reevaluate what mattered most, she began leaning into creativity and calming activities that helped her heal and reconnect with herself. That journey eventually led her to become certified in the Zentangle Method, a meditative style of drawing designed to promote relaxation and mindfulness. Like so many people during COVID, Kelli started sharing what she loved online. She taught calming drawing sessions virtually, created YouTube videos at her audience's request, and slowly built a community of people who connected with both her creativity and her calming presence. At first, she wasn't trying to build a business. She was simply serving people. And that's exactly where so many successful subscription box businesses begin. The “Accidental” Business That Wasn't Really an Accident As Kelli's audience grew, people started asking questions. So Kelli began putting together small seasonal kits a few times a year, selling 20 or 30 at a time to her growing audience. Without realizing it, Kelli was listening to her audience and creating offers based on what they were already asking for. The Moment Everything Shifted Then Kelli discovered Launch Your Box. After listening to this podcast, reading my book, One Box at a Time, and attending Subscription Box Week, Kelli started asking herself a question she'd never seriously considered before: What if this could become more than a side hustle? Eventually, with support from her husband, she decided to take a year and truly treat Minutes of Zen like a business instead of a hobby. Why “Do It Messy” Matters One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is Kelli's honesty about how imperfect everything still is. And yet, she has over 425 subscribers. That's the reminder so many aspiring subscription box owners need. You do not have to have everything perfectly figured out before you launch. Building a Subscription Box Around Experience Kelli intentionally wanted the box to feel calming, supportive, and immersive, not just like another box of “stuff.” That experience-first mindset helped her create something subscribers genuinely connect with. It's also a great reminder that your subscription box doesn't have to be complicated to be valuable. Sometimes the simplest ideas become the most meaningful. Her First Launch Brought in 300 Subscribers Kelli originally hoped for 100 subscribers during her first launch. She ended up with 300. She focused on: Building an email list Growing a waitlist Showing up consistently Talking about the box repeatedly Serving her audience long before selling to them And perhaps most importantly, she stopped worrying about “bothering” people by talking about her offer too much. A Business That's Changing Her Life Kelli shared that her early side-hustle income paid for an Alaskan cruise for her and her husband's 30th anniversary. Now, her business is helping support her family even more. And perhaps most importantly, she's created something that gives her freedom. The Advice Every Aspiring Subscription Box Owner Needs to Hear At the end of the episode, Kelli shares the advice she would give anyone feeling stuck or afraid to start: “Show up. And then show up again.” That consistency is what changed everything for her. Not perfection, expensive tools, or having it all figured out. Just continuing to show up, serve people, and keep going. Kelli's story is proof that you don't need a perfect website, perfect branding, or perfect confidence to begin. You just need the willingness to start. What if your home is holding you back instead of moving you forward? For many homeowners, spaces are designed for who they were, not who they are becoming. Vera Blouin, founder of BLOU INK, joins Host Carol Morgan on Atlanta Real Estate Forum to explain how intentional home design rooted in spatial psychology and identity-based design can reshape not only a space but also daily habits, mindset and personal growth. Blouin challenges traditional design norms and offers a more strategic, human-centered approach to creating environments that evolve alongside the people who live in them. What Is “Spatial Dissonance” and Why Does It Matter? Blouin introduces the concept of “spatial dissonance,” a feeling many homeowners experience but struggle to define. “Spatial dissonance is the in-between space of who you were and who you're becoming, and it's actually a powerful place to be,” Blouin said. Rather than signaling a need to start over or to hold on to the past, this moment reflects personal evolution. The issue is not the belongings themselves but the mismatch between a person's current identity and their environment. “Your home is still holding on to a different season of life,” Blouin said. Identity-Based Design: Moving Beyond Aesthetics BLOU INK challenges conventional home design by shifting the focus away from finishes, furniture and visual trends. Design begins with a foundational question: who the homeowner is today, and who they are becoming next? Through identity-based design, Blouin aligns physical environments with personal evolution, transforming a home from a static backdrop into an active system that can either reinforce old habits or support new ones. This approach moves design beyond aesthetics and into behavioral and psychological territory. “When I walk into a client's home, I'm not asking, ‘What's your design style?' I can figure that out,” Blouin said. “What I'm really looking for is who are you becoming, and is your environment currently supporting that?” Blouin designs with daily life in mind, including how people move through rooms, start and end their days and experience focus, rest and intention. In this framework, design focuses less on visual harmony and more on functional alignment between environment and identity. How Spatial Psychology Shapes Daily Life Blouin's work is grounded in spatial psychology, the study of how physical environments influence human behavior. Even small design choices can affect productivity and stress levels. For example, a desk facing a wall with no natural light can create mental blocks, while repositioning it toward a window can improve clarity and focus. The Hidden Impact of Clutter and Layout “Clutter isn't physical… it's a signal of what's going on mentally,” said Blouin. What homeowners often label as “mess” is actually a visible expression of cognitive overload. When a space feels disorganized, it often reflects how information, stress and priorities are processed internally. Layout plays an equally important role in shaping daily experience. Furniture placement, traffic flow and spatial barriers all influence how easily someone moves through their home and completes routine tasks. Even small disruptions can introduce friction that accumulates over time, subtly affecting focus and energy. In this framework, organization focuses less on visual tidiness and more on removing obstacles that interfere with how people live. Blouin describes this process as eliminating unnecessary “blocks” in the environment that slow down momentum and reduce clarity. “Reincarnating” a Room: Letting Go to Move Forward In her book, The Reincarnated Room, Blouin expands on the idea of design as a tool for personal transformation. She compares the process to a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly and emphasizes the importance of embracing discomfort and uncertainty. “It isn't about making it prettier. It's about allowing it to become something entirely new,” Blouin said. Designing for Life Transitions Career changes, growing families, relocations, empty nesting or lifestyle shifts often surface the same realization: the home no longer functions the way life now demands. When identity shifts, the environment must also shift to remain supportive. Without that adjustment, homes can begin to feel misaligned, still organized around routines, priorities and emotional needs that no longer exist. Homeowners can use this transition as a diagnostic moment to decide what happens next. Instead of rushing to fix a space during moments of change, homeowners gain clarity by allowing the home to reveal what needs to evolve. Over time, this leads to environments that not only accommodate life transitions but actively support them. “Home shouldn't just hold your life, it should move you forward,” Blouin said. By integrating spatial psychology and identity-based design, BLOU INK helps homeowners and industry professionals rethink how spaces shape behavior, mindset and daily life. The firm's approach reframes home design as a tool for personal growth and long-term alignment. To learn more about BLOU INK, visit https://BLOUINK.com/. Text me your thoughts or questions on this episode!Interior designer Vera Blouin joins me to talk about her book, “The Reincarnated Room.” Vera sees the home as something that holds the history of who we've been, and through design, we can let go of those old layers and create spaces that support who we're becoming. We explore how materials, light, and texture shape our emotional experience of a room, and why staying “comfortable” can sometimes keep us stuck instead of helping us grow. It's a thoughtful conversation about how our homes evolve alongside us, and how design can become a tool for stepping into the next chapter of our lives. After our conversation, I slipped in some bonus content, a listener Q&A on what I do in terms of decorating between the holidays.Download the free guide to Define Your Signature StyleBuy the book, "Slow Style Home"Learn more at our website Want to finally define your style? This is an interview with author, anthropologist and activist Philippe Blouin speaking on the importance of the Mohawk Mother demands of McGill University and the ways that these local Indigenous demands of justice are connected to a perspective of international solidarity. Phil outlines the ways that McGill University in Montreal has blocked many attempts to halt the construction taking place on old medical grounds at McGill which are widely known and discussed, particularly in Indigenous communities, as having unmarked graves for Indigenous children. These children were lost in the system of forced adoption in Canada known as the 60s scoop where Indigenous family were stripped of their kids by force by the government, this took place at times in collaboration with psychiatric institutions who would experiment on Indigenous children in the context of programs like the CIA backed MK Ultra. In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Michael Blouin about his poetry collection, Hard Electric (Anvil Press, 2024). Hard Electric is Michael Blouin's third book of poetry, a road-tripping, bridge-burning collection of the author's hard-won and soft-edged reflections that seem to stutter-step towards resolution while tumbling down a decided slant towards disaster. “Where Does My Heart Beat Now” was Celine Dion's first North American hit and in it she asks: ‘Where do all the lonely hearts go?' In Hard Electric Blouin presents a bleakly unsettling but ultimately life-affirming treatise that hints at his fascination with the same question and perhaps shuffles into the neighbourhood of an answer. That neighbourhood is peopled with late-night bars of Key West's Duval Street, the sharp spice of BBQ joints, sunburned beach motels, and Christmas lights frozen to February trees. And Susan Sarandon's cousin. It's a book not for the faint of heart, but for the lonely-hearted, and for those who know them well. About Michael Blouin: Michael Blouin has been a finalist for the Amazon First Novel Award, the bpNichol Award, and the CBC Literary Award. He has been the recipient of the Lilian I. Found Award, the Diana Brebner Award and the Archibald Lampman Award from ARC Magazine. His novel Chase and Haven won the ReLit Award for Best Novel, an award he received again for his novel Skin House. He is an Instructor at the University of Toronto, a guest lecturer for Carleton University, and has served as an adjudicator for both the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Two of his novels are now in a permanent archive on the Moon having landed with NASA in 2024. His collected poetry “Hard Electric” is slated to land at the lunar South Pole later in 2025. About Hollay Ghadery: Hollay Ghadery is an Iranian-Canadian multi-genre writer living in Ontario on Anishinaabe land. She has her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. Fuse, her memoir of mixed-race identity and mental health, was released by Guernica Editions in 2021 and won the 2023 Canadian Bookclub Award for Nonfiction/Memoir. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 8th and final study session on the late Dr. Maya Angelou's The Heart of A Woman. The acclaimed author, poet, rape victim and Victim of White Supremacy, Dr. Angelou penned a 7-book autobiography series on her life and work. This is book number 4 in the series. Gus T. was inundated with the life and literary work of Dr. Angelou during his recent Golden State sojourn. And it took Gus seeing the documentary film Soundtrack to a Coup d'État three times to accurately write down the title The Heart of a Woman. The extraordinary film on the assassination of Patrice Lumumba is "receipt-heavy," and Andrée Blouin and Dr. Angelou's respective memoirs are just 2 of the many books in the project. Last week, Dr. Angelou describes following her husband Vus to Africa without even an address or hotel reservation once she travels across the planet with her son, Guy. She and Vus have repeated conflicts about money and are nearing a second eviction. Dr. Angelou tells us she fell out of "love" with her care mate at this point. We heard about a lot more parties, dancing and liquor drinking. Dr. Angelou took time to make a distinction between she and the black people born in the United States as opposed to black people born in Africa. She incorrectly tells readers that "black Americans" were the last large group of people enslaved on the planet. Brazil kept black people in formal slavery until 1888, and there are millions more black people in the Portuguese-speaking country than the US. #ImGoinGetMeSomeStuffTonight #SoundtrackToACoupdÉtat #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 7th study session on the late Dr. Maya Angelou's The Heart of A Woman. This is a rare "double dip" for the book club, as we read I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings in the summer of 2014 just after the transition of the famed author and Wake Forest scholar. Gus T. was inundated with the life and literary work of Dr. Angelou during his recent Golden State sojourn. The extraordinary film on the assassination of Patrice Lumumba is "receipt-heavy," and Andrée Blouin and Dr. Angelou's respective memoirs are just 2 of the many books in the project. Last week, Dr. Angelou describes her involvement in the White French convict Jean Genet's play, The Blacks: A Clown Show. This celebrated show featured a cast of renown black thespians and was shown around the world. Dr. Angelou describes how mostly White audiences devoured the play, but continued their dedication to White Supremacy - even to the negro cast as soon as they stepped off the stage. The Suspected Racist director, Sidney Bernstein, shafted Max Roach and Dr. Angelou for their musical labor on the play. This is typical White Racism and the time-honored White tradition of robbing black artists. Bernstein was not ignorant about Racism. After speculating that her husband Vus might be cheating on her, our heroine contemplates poisoning her African care-mate. #AppleEvent #SoundtrackToACoupdÉtat #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Last week, the late poet an Victim of White Supremacy told us about how she, Abbey Lincoln and other black females of the Cultural Association for Women of African Heritage helped to coordinate a rally on the New York United Nations building. This was in response to the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. Dr. Angelou grabbed a random black "thug" to help escort her into the building. NPR's Terry Gross, a Racist Suspect, interviewed Dr. Angelou in 1981 and confessed that she feared this privileged black "thug" was going to assault and "rape" our heroine in the UN stairwell. Thankfully, everyone kept their pants zipped. In fact, after everything was finished, Dr. Angelou admitted feeling pretty lousy about risking the black fellas' life for her poorly conceived effort. #AppleEvent #SoundtrackToACoupdÉtat #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

She was momentarily engaged to a black bale bondsman named Thomas. But she met a chubby African named Make and kicked worthless Thomas to the curb. She agreed to marry Make (at least her 3rd fiancé), and introduced him to her 15-year-old son Guy as her new care mate. Guy continues to insist that he's a "man." Dr. Angelou meets numerous Africans and shares with them the history of White Supremacy in the US, highlighting the counter-racist labor of Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. #ImGoinGetMeSomeStuffTonight #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The extraordinary film on the assassination of Patrice Lumumba is "receipt-heavy," and Andrée Blouin and Dr. Angelou's respective memoirs are just two of the many books in the project. Last week, Dr. Angelou described meeting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in New York. Before departing Dr. King told Dr. Angelou that there are some "good White people." Dr. Angelou wondered if he said this because a White Man was listening. She later echoes Dr. King's conclusion, citing the Russians and Fidel Castro, who allegedly never self-identified as a White Man. While Dr. Angelou is globetrotting and drinking with White Men, her son is threatened by a gang of "worthless" black males. Her son Guy seems to insist with every other sentence that he: "Is a man." Dr. Angelou writes over and over about the impotence, unnecessariness, and failure of black manhood. Like her brother, who was in greater confinement during the early 1960s. #AppleEvent #SoundtrackToACoupdÉtat #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Dr. Angelou was so touched by their words she began thinking of how she could act to support their efforts. She's strikingly candid about the widespread tendency of she and most other black people to be "uncle toms" and the necessity of telling her black son about "the power of White power." En route to offering her services to Bayard Rustin and the SCLC, Dr. Angelou encounters a phalanx of White Men who volunteer their White time and expertise to aid the niggra, and, probably, spy for COINTELPRO. #AppleEvent #SoundtrackToACoupdÉtat #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

She minimized the abuse tennis champion Althea Gibson experienced and elided US Senator J. Strom Thurmond raping a black child in South Carolina while filibustering against niggras. The young Dr. Angelou fried chicken for and entertained Billie "Lady Day" Holiday and sat while the jazz legend sang "Strange Fruit" to her 9-year-old son, Guy. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 10th and final study session on Andrée Blouin's My Country, Africa: Autobiography of the Black Pasionaria. A pivotal figure in the history of counter-racism/anti-colonialism throughout the continent of Africa, Blouin is not as well known as South Africa's Madiba and Winnie Mandela, Kenya's Maus Maus and other freedom fighters who participated in combating White Terrorism in Africa. However, Blouin was of monumental importance and, consequently, a target of CIA/White Supremacy campaigns. Gus T. was ignorant about Ms. Blouin, but she was prominently featured in the new documentary, Soundtrack to a Coup d'État - which examines the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. The film makes time to quote from Blouin's autobiography about the efforts to assassinate she, her family and Lumumba. Last week, Blouin described herself as a "militant," but made time to say: "It would be unfair to say that all the whites in the Congo were detestable (Racist)" Gus noted how cliché this remark is - especially for a "militant." She then turned to say the real enemies of Africa are Africans (non-white people). She also described the extraordinary faith Patrice Lumumba placed in her - including battling on her behalf publicly. Whites at Stanford have whole files and many, many boxes of material on she and the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. During our last study session Blouin detailed how Sékou Touré dramatically impacted her thought, speech and action. Blouin, but she was prominently featured in the new documentary, Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat - which examines the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. The film makes time to quote from Blouin's autobiography about the efforts to assassinate she, her family and Lumumba. #SoundtrackToACoupdEtat #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

This week, we're replaying a classic episode where Steve and Yvonne interview Dan Blouin and Jim Kramer of Simmons, Hanly, Conroy (https://www.simmonsfirm.com/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review View/Download Trial Documents Case Details: Accomplished mesothelioma and asbestos attorneys Dan Blouin and Jim Kramer explain how they secured justice for the family of laborer Pietro Macaluso, who died from mesothelioma after being exposed to asbestos dust while servicing and removing boilers. Despite the fact they knew it was hazardous, three boiler manufacturers used asbestos-filled insulation, cement, gaskets, tape and wire in their equipment and failed to warn workers like Pietro of potential health hazards or to offer safe handling methods. A New York City jury found the three manufacturers negligent and assigned 25 percent of the blame for Pietro's wrongful death to each company, along with smaller percentages to seven other manufacturers. The jury awarded a $60 million verdict, including 21 years of compensation to Pietro's son and daughter. Guest Bios: Dan Blouin Attorney Daniel Patrick Blouin is a shareholder at Simmons Hanly Conroy in the asbestos litigation department. Based in the firm's New York office, Daniel has secured hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of clients diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer. In his frequent role as lead trial-attorney and co-counsel, he has litigated against numerous national corporations involved in the manufacture and sale of dangerous products and equipment. He involves himself with every aspect of the litigation process, from client intake to discovery, to motion practice through trial verdict, keeping his clients' needs and rights foremost in his priorities. In 2013, Daniel obtained a $190 million verdict on behalf of two tradesmen who developed mesothelioma decades after their occupational exposure to asbestos. The verdict was the largest consolidated asbestos verdict in New York history. In addition, the $60 million the two cancer patients received ranked among the largest individual damages awarded in a New York asbestos case. In 2014 and 2015, Daniel had unprecedented successes at trial in Delaware, New York City and Upstate New York. He obtained excellent settlements for clients before and during trial and won a jury verdict in a very contentious case in Syracuse, New York. In 2018, Daniel and fellow shareholder Jim Kramer secured a $60 million verdict in New York City against boiler manufacturers A.O Smith, Burnham, LLC, and Peerless Industries, Inc. This historic verdict, secured on behalf of a former laborer, marks one of the highest verdicts for an individual with mesothelioma ever received in New York. Later that year, Daniel and Jim secured a $40.1 million verdict against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. on behalf of a United States war veteran and former naval boiler tender suffering from pleural mesothelioma. This verdict is considered one of the largest compensatory verdicts in New York State. Daniel is a recognized member of the renowned National Trial Lawyers “Top 40 under 40” for 2014 and 2015. Also in 2014 and 2015, the National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys named him a winner of its “Top Ten Under 40” award and is a member of the American Bar Association and the New York Bar Association. Read Full Bio Jim Kramer Attorney Jim Kramer is a shareholder at Simmons Hanly Conroy. He joined the firm in 2017 an accomplished trial attorney, having secured more than $35 million in verdicts for his clients. Jim focuses his practice on complex toxic tort litigation with a specialization in mesothelioma- and asbestos-related cases. His responsibilities include managing cases from inception through trial. Jim knew from a young age that he wanted to be an attorney and devote his life to fighting on behalf of those who had been wronged by others. “I have always been attracted to professions that allow people to help others in need,” he said. “Being a trial attorney allows me to do that. I truly consider myself a zealous advocate, one who genuinely enjoys fighting for those need a voice in their most difficult times.” Jim brings this passion to every case he tries. One of the most important things to him in an attorney-client relationship is the personal connection forged between the two. “I pride myself on my ability to form strong connections with my clients,” he said. “I understand that being involved in a legal case is not ideal, especially at such a rough time in their lives. It's important to me that clients know that I am there for them at any time on any day. In my opinion, being an effective advocate doesn't end with merely hearing about the facts of a client's case. Being able to relate and connect with human beings who need their stories to be told is the most fundamental part of our profession. Even when my representation ends, I find that the bond I form with clients continues.” Jim's devotion to his clients is mirrored by the attention he gives to the details of each case. “I always view every case from the perspective of a possible trial – what facts need to be brought out, where exposures might have occurred, and what legal outcomes we can anticipate and prepare for right from the start,” he said. “I genuinely enjoy the research and preparation that goes into making sure that a legal argument or trial will go as well as it can.” Read Full Bio Show Sponsors: Legal Technology Services - LegalTechService.com Digital Law Marketing - DigitalLawMarketing.com Harris Lowry Manton LLP - hlmlawfirm.com Free Resources: Stages Of A Jury Trial - Part 1 Stages Of A Jury Trial - Part 2
