From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Somebody Say HallelujahLinda Sloan of Hopkins, Minn., is the executive director for the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage. She predicts audiences will be on their feet at the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul this weekend, moved by “The Sound of Gospel: An Anthology Depicting the Rich History and Evolution of Gospel Music.”The play is written by Rev. William H. Pierce of 2nd Chance Outreach and directed by Academy Award-nominated artist Jevetta Steele, with musical direction by Grammy Award-winning artist Billy Steele. The all-ages show will be performed Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. Linda says: I cannot say enough about this performance. It is amazing. When I went to the show a couple years ago, I was just blown away by the caliber of the talent and then the meaning of the songs. It's just a phenomenal show. You'll hear anything from spirituals to praise and worship. It is just an opportunity for individuals who maybe have never really experienced gospel to understand the roots, the roots of where it comes from and why it is spiritual music. It's so energetic. There are a couple little somber moments, because it is a history of gospel music, and there have been things in the past that maybe occur that required spiritual music. But for the most part, it's just one of those “toe-tapping, get-on-your-feet, clapping, as if you were in a Baptist church” shows. — Linda Sloan  A play about DREAMers navigating life Actor and singer Anna Hashizume of Minneapolis recommends seeing Frank Theatre's current production of the play “Sanctuary City,” about two undocumented teens growing up in Newark, N.J., post 9/11. She describes the play as a series of very short scenes performed by an outstanding three-person cast. The play runs in the intimate Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis through Feb. 23. Masks are required for the Feb. 7 and Feb. 16 performances. Frank Theatre, which mounted the play, specializes in works that spark conversation, and Anna says this show feels incredibly timely.Anna says: I know when [director] Wendy Knox first chose the play we didn't know the political climate that was going to be happening at this moment in time, but it is a very timely play for what is happening in our nation right now.  Theater has a lot of different functions. It can just be entertainment, which is also lovely at a time like this, but also being able to be educated and see different life experiences in front of your eyes in a relatively safe space can open something up in all of us. — Anna HashizumeA breath of spring Donna Winberg of Deephaven, Minn., loves to walk the trails at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska, so she's been able to pop inside the visitor center to watch preparations for the Spring Flower show. The enchanted garden displays are now open to viewers with an Arboretum ticket daily through March 16.  In addition to the Spring Flower show, Donna recommends continuing through the Synder Building to the Conservatory, which is currently packed with orchids and tropical blooms, with a stop at the Rootstock Café for a bite to eat. Additional ticketed events include an Art Fair on Feb. 15 and 16, After Hours with Flowers and Afternoon Tea events. MPR chief meteorologist Paul Huttner is also a fan; see his pictures in a recent Updraft Blog here. Donna describes the scene: You'll be amazed when you see the huge tree trunks they've brought in there, and the mosses and the lichens and the mushrooms. It's just like a breath of spring, which we all need this time of year! What I really love is the local artist work that is incorporated into the displays. There'll be different artists coming in [through the course of the show.] [This week] there are mosaic glass birds and ceramic birds and all sorts of wonderful little fairy houses, bird houses. So you have to stand there and look at things for a while to have it all revealed to you, which is fun.— Donna Winberg

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 6th study session on the late Dr. Maya Angelou's The Heart of A Woman. This is a rare "double dip" for the book club, as we read I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings in the summer of 2014 just after the transition of the famed author and Wake Forest scholar. Gus T. was inundated with the life and literary work of Dr. Angelou during his recent Golden State sojourn. And it took Gus seeing the documentary film Soundtrack to a Coup d'État three times to accurately write down the title Heart of a Woman. The extraordinary film on the assassination of Patrice Lumumba is "receipt-heavy," and Andrée Blouin and Dr. Angelou's respective memoirs are just 2 of the many books in the project. Last week, the late poet an Victim of White Supremacy told us about how she, Abbey Lincoln and other black females of the Cultural Association for Women of African Heritage helped to coordinate a rally on the New York United Nations building. This was in response to the assassination of Patrice Lumumba. Dr. Angelou grabbed a random black "thug" to help escort her into the building. NPR's Terry Gross, a Racist Suspect, interviewed Dr. Angelou in 1981 and confessed that she feared this privileged black "thug" was going to assault and "rape" our heroine in the UN stairwell. Thankfully, everyone kept their pants zipped. In fact, after everything was finished, Dr. Angelou admitted feeling pretty lousy about risking the black fellas' life for her poorly conceived effort. #AppleEvent #SoundtrackToACoupdÉtat #TheCOWS16Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Gerald Brooks, Chairman of the Board for The African Heritage Association, stopped by to speak with Nancy to talk about the St. Louis African Arts Festival. The first St. Louis African Arts Festival was held in 1991 as an outgrowth of the 34th Annual African Studies Conference hosted by Washington University.  A year prior to the conference, a group of academic, business, and community leaders came together to explore ways in which a forum could be established that would bring the  diverse community of St. Louis together for the purpose of learning and celebrating the rich and diverse cultures of African and African American  people. The mission of the festival is to increase the awareness of the global contributions of African people and people of African descent have made through art, cultural, and educational programs. The St. Louis African Arts Festival is held in beautiful Forest Park. Each year the festival attracts a diverse audience of thousands of local residents and out-of-town visitors during the Memorial Day weekend. The Festival draws the community together in celebration of the rich contributions of Africa and the African Diaspora (diaspora–people settled far from their ancestral homelands).  This year's festival happens May 25,  26, and 27 in Forest Park.

On returning from a 5-day conference Dr Omo would like to share with you what she has learned listening to peak performance coach Tony Robbins, top Life and Business Strategist, and supporting many people to overcome their reticence in facing their challenges and fears by, literally, walking through fire. Find out what Dr Omo learned from helping others through this cathartic breakthrough.  KEY TAKEAWAYS  As a conference volunteer, Dr Omo was responsible for helping 8000 people who are deciding to walk across hot coal as a symbolic leap to conquer fear and overwhelm. As we grow older the responsibility and stakes grow so the possibility of failure holds more weight.  When you want to achieve something the best way to build your momentum is to surround yourself with people who are going to champion you. We often carry false beliefs about our capabilities, even during the performance of tasks that we believe ourselves to be incapable of. Do not be afraid to ask advice from those individuals whose leadership you look up to and would like to emulate.   Be clear on your target goal and do not think you have to achieve it ruthlessly. BEST MOMENTS‘His name is Tony Robbins. He's a peak performance coach and I've started listening to him and working with him since 2015 and my life has truly been changed. I really believe that he came into my life at the right time.' ‘God surrounds you with the people around you to make it happen.' ‘As the participants were coming to the point where they had to walk on the fire, what really, really helped them was when we were all chanting with them. We were like; ‘Yes, yes, yes!''‘I was volunteering and registering about 800 people and saying hello to people with ease. Despite the fact that I was welcoming people, greeting people at the door so easily, I taught myself that I was shy.'‘Taking charge of you moving into your next leadership position is your responsibility.' Power in Diversity Podcast is also designed to equip not only individuals but, crucially, organisations who must learn to create diverse and inclusive organisations practically and not merely as a tick box exercise; especially now in this ever-changing world, everyone's diverse insight is vital to solving world issues. I hope that this podcast allows organisations to appreciate the real barriers female and ethnic minority groups face in stepping into leadership, barriers sadly I and many others have faced, and many continue to face. I'm proud to be British and proud of my African Heritage, my tribe, part of the Benin Empire. I feel blessed to be a woman. ABOUT THE HOSTDr Omo Akoje Okonkwo is a practising Cosmetic Dental Surgeon working in Private Clinics in Surrey. Her passion for empowering her patients and team led her to Transformational coaching to bring about significant change in others.  Her many skill sets and ability to motivate people quickly opened leadership roles for her, including Director of Health care Projects and Clinical Lead and Senior Tutor at the prestigious King College Dental Hospital. Along her journey, she faced numerous setbacks despite her passion, academic background and experience. Notwithstanding, her passion for excellence and growth led her to embark on an MBA at the Renowned Warwick Business School. Her desire to empower women steered her to conduct qualitative research exploring Gender, Leadership, and Identity. Her findings revealed what she had always sensed, the leadership labyrinth for female and ethnic minority leaders that exists. Biofeedback machines access a unique energy blueprint and analyse you to find your stresses. We'll be balancing their bodies and we're really helping them pursue their passions in alignment.' ‘Giving a voice to what it can be like for a brown woman and the inner turmoil that you go through that you can't really explain to those around you.'   ‘There are days of rest where I'm just nurturing, self-caring and making sure I'm looking after myself.' ‘You have the right to feel safe and comfortable.' What is holistic resistance? How can we practice it to break historical narratives and challenge oppression in the workplace? In Episode 131, Aaron Johnson, Professional Speaker at The CUT, joins Melinda in an honest conversation on the power of touch and the Black brute narrative in the workplace. They explore holistic resistance as a response to the profound impact of the Black brute narrative on African heritage men. They discuss ways this narrative shows up in the workplace, including through a lack of safe space where Black men can be vulnerable, set boundaries, and protect themselves when those boundaries are violated. They also discuss the relationship between White women and Black men and how each of us can advocate for anti-racism in the fight against oppression.About Aaron Johnson (he/him)My name is Aaron, and what lights me up right now is cultivating environments that allow black-bodied people to show up as their full tender selves. One of my goals is for black folks to be in spaces where connection to each other and the earth is accessible. Welcome to the first episode of Power in Diversity with Dr Omo Akoje Okonkwo, this podcast is a space where professional women from diverse backgrounds, eager to grow as leaders, come to be inspired and gain wisdom from other leaders. As a great introduction to the podcast we have a fantastic guest, Dr Anna Kusi on the show. Anna is a medical doctor with a background in obstetrics and gynaecology and is the founder of Black Female Doctors UK with the aim of uniting black female doctors to support each other in their careers.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Black women and women from ethnic minority groups reach menopause on average eight months earlier than other races. We also tend to have more symptoms and more severe symptoms that last longer. This can lead to more health implications and more research needs to be done.  We can get menopause ready by generally staying fit, that means eating healthily, getting regular exercise, and not smoking. When your body stops producing as much oestrogen, we need to make sure our bodies are in the best state possible to deal with that change.  Perimenopausal symptoms include Irregular periods. Hot flashes and sleep problems. Mood changes. Vaginal and bladder problems. Vaginal dryness. Decreasing fertility. Changes in sexual function. Loss of bone. And changing cholesterol levels. You may have all or none of these symptoms.  Anna has experienced a lack of diversity while studying to be a doctor in Bristol, there was a lack of black women doctors for her to look up to and gain inspiration from.  This lack of diversity did sometimes give her a feeling of being ‘other' like she didn't belong. Some people even thought she was a foreign student despite growing up in Peckham. At the time it was very isolating for Anna but now she says that she works with a much more diverse group of doctors.    BEST MOMENTS ‘We forget that the menopause can affect any woman at any age'  ‘We need to be menopause ready and do it like a real boss lady' ‘With the lack of diversity, you can feel the imposter syndrome'    EPISODE RESOURCES  Black Female Doctors UK (@blackfemaledrs.uk) • Instagram photos and videos Dr Anna Kusi on LinkedIn ABOUT THE GUEST  Dr Anna Kusi is a medical doctor with a background in obstetrics and gynaecology and is the founder of Black Female Doctors UK with the aim of uniting black female doctors to support each other in their careers. Dr Cinwe joins Dr Omo on Power in Diversity to share her story and hopefully inspire you to aim for the best.    KEY TAKEAWAYS   Resilience is important to build as a young person. Chinwe always knew she could do whatever she wanted because of her desire and drive. Even with the traumas and challenges she faced when her family moved from Nigeria to Italy and the racism they endured, Chinwe had the personality to let it build her character, rather than break it.  Growing up in an area of Italy which didn't have a black community and without many friends at school, Chinwe had to rely on her family for support. It's lucky she has a twin sister and another sister only a year different in age from her.  Chinwe has the ability to do things by herself, even at a young age she flew to London on her own for her interview at King's College and impressed them so much they broke protocol and pretty much told her she'd got in.  Chinwe's goal is to create a practice where anyone can walk in and feel like they're safe and they belong there regardless of race or age or anything that people have made them feel other for.    BEST MOMENTS   ‘These experiences build you and your resilience.'  ‘I'm not going to give up even if they laugh at me..' ‘It's hard when you see injustice and others turn away.' ‘Validation does not need to come from anywhere external.'   EPISODE RESOURCES    Dr Chinwe Akuonu on LinkedIn Dr Chinwe Akuonu (@dr.chinwe.55) • Instagram photos and videos   ABOUT THE GUEST    Dr Chinwe Akuonu graduated from King's College London with multiple awards to her name, such as London's Best Young Dentist finalist 2022. She joins Oma today on Power in Diversity to talk about her career in dentistry, the different hats she wears as a life coach and football coach, and her wonderful attitude when it comes to tackling obstacles and seeing them as opportunities to grow and give.  KEY TAKEAWAYS From a British Nigerian family, Maggie is a working mum with three young children, one of whom is a West End award winning actress, one is a busy netballer and another a youth pro footballer. Her husband is a surgeon so the get up and go attitude extends to the whole family.  Maggie overcame dyslexia to make the transition from modelling to footballing dental student in 1998. She didn't make the grades on her offer but with her drive and social skills she convinced them to let her study anyway. Maggie qualified in the top 10 in her year 2003 at age 22. There is a massive untapped potential within the brains of every human being. Maggie sees this every day when coaching youth football, if you tell them they can do it and show them how to practise, then that sponge like brain can learn to do anything.  The worst thing that will happen is nothing. If you try and it doesn't work, then the worst place you can be is right back where you started, only with a little more knowledge of what to do next time.  BEST MOMENTS ‘I remember thinking for the first time in a long time, it is possible to try'  ‘I can't handle sick children and dying people, so that ruled out medicine' ‘Sometimes you just fall into something and you know if it's right for you' ‘The world will move in a certain way when it's ready for something' EPISODE RESOURCES  Maggie on LinkedIn Mill Hill Dental Practice Maggie Data Andi (@maggietheholisticdentist) • Instagram photos and videos Dr Maggie Data Andi BDS MJDF RCSEng MFDS CGDent UK (@maggie_andi) / Twitter ABOUT THE GUEST  “I qualified from St Barts and the Royal London, Queen Mary school of medicine and dentistry in 2003, aged just 22. Episode 373: Mediterranean Wisdom for a Life Worth Savoring with Emily A. Francis EPISODE NOTES JUNETEENTH (Federal and Minnesota State Holiday)Before exploring Mediterranean Wisdom with Emily A. Francis, I acknowledge Juneteenth. This commemorates the day enslaved people of African descent were informed that they were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. From the Council For Minnesotans of African Heritage website, the earliest Juneteenth celebrations began in 1866 in local African Heritage church communities in the South. Us folks in the North, Midwest, and Western United States learned of Juneteenth during the Great Migration, where 6 million Black Americans were enticed to move north for work from about 1916-1970. In January 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill recognizing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. In January of this year, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed a bill recognizing Juneteenth as a state holiday. Here is a link to 10 ideas to commemorate and celebrate JUNETEENTH. Mediterranean Wisdom with Emily E. Francis“Try not to resist the changes that come your way. Instead, let life live through you. And do not worry that your life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come?” – Rumi, a Sufi and Persian PoetAs Rumi describes above, Emily is letting the Mediterranean life live through her and shares her wisdom to help us savor our lives. The Mediterranean lifestyle is one of the world's healthiest lifestyles and is known in the West through the famous Mediterranean Diet.Emily invites us to live simply, mindfully, and naturally to nourish our bodies and souls. I start this conversation with a quote from Emily's fifth book, The Taste of Joy: Mediterranean Wisdom for a Life Worth Savoring. Emily is in her third year of living the Mediterranean lifestyle with her family on the European Island of Malta. She is keenly aware of the stark difference between Atlanta, Georgia, where we are in our American Democracy, and where she and her family live now. This makes it easier for her to highlight what we need to bring joy into our lives to develop a life worth savoring. A bit of salt made from the sun, the wind, and the sea brings out the flavor of what we eat. Honey secrets help us adapt to new locations. Making our own dressing engages our senses, and one can never learn too much about figs and other essentials like good people to make life worth savoring. This conversation is packed with nuggets of goodness.Emily dispels the American myth about the Mediterranean Diet with a definition she has observed from the Maltese people and now lives herself. She says the Mediterranean Diet misrepresents what the Mediterranean people live for food, fun, family, and faith. And they love sunshine. Those working in offices have snorkels, swimsuits, and other items tucked in their cars to weave play and enjoyment into their workday. They jump in the sea during lunch to enjoy the sunshine and then return to the office to finish the day's work. Lots of ideas here.We learn the limitations of what Emily was taught about happiness and explore what it means to love someone unconditionally. “In Malta, people aren't climbing all over each other and trying to keep up with the Joneses. They want you to succeed,” says Emily. She uses the analogy of lighting a candle and using it to light another's candle, making the light shine brighter and more prominent as a collective. There isn't a finite amount of love, joy, and happiness. The more joy and happiness we can bring, our lives and those around us will expand. In our first conversation, we got a taste of joy as Emily talked about her move from Atlanta, Georgia, to Malta and how that experience changed her and her family's life. Unexpectedly, Emily found her soul in Malta when her husband Scott and their two daughters, Hannah, almost 11, and Ava, 9, moved. They took a mammoth leap of faith in 2020,

Today's guest on Power in Diversity is someone Dr. Omo has watched grow from strength to strength. Elaine Cunningham Walker is an award-winning educational strategist and founder of the Global Educational Consulting firm, who has also been featured in Forbes. As a mother of two highly gifted children, both of whom were endorsed by Manasa after appearing on Channel Four's Child Genius, Elaine has become a go-to consultant for parents seeking advice on how to bring out the best in their own children.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Elaine finds that many children lack the emotional intelligence and resilience to deal with the personal struggles they face on the education path. However, she lives by the code “There is Genius in every child, it just needs nurtured and developed”.  Elaine has become an advocate for building the next generation of leaders, emphasising the importance of ensuring that people who look like her and her children are represented in top positions. She believes that the reason for the underrepresentation of certain groups at the top is due to a lack of access to the right schools, friends, and networks. Networking is all about leaving a lasting impression on people's minds. It's important to be memorable for the right reasons, and unfortunately, our community often fails to achieve this. As women, we often neglect investing in ourselves. We tend to invest in others but fail to invest in ourselves by seeking out mentors, coaches, or individuals who have already achieved success and can provide positive guidance or advice on what steps we need to take to reach our goals. When we are labelled as being angry, it is because we are trying to win the argument with emotion instead of facts. If we speak from a place of facts rather than emotion, people will perceive us differently, and we will not come across as angry.   BEST MOMENTS   ‘The statistics say that if you're a black single mother, your children must end up on a particular trajectory. The amazing Fiona Campbell is with us today on Power in Diversity. Her career has been very diverse, going from air traffic control to hospitality to sales. She's a clinical hypnotherapy, an NLP trainer, an executive coach, and a corporate facilitator. As a certified NLP business trainer, Fiona is helping businesses with communication skills, leadership development, and sales training.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   One of the biggest breaks Fiona had in her career was getting into sales at Xerox without a university degree. The hiring manager said we can train you, you'll learn, you've already demonstrated how you can be organised, and the attitude you've demonstrated is what we're looking for.  If you're telling yourself that you have imposter syndrome and feel like you're not deserving of your success, then you should listen to Fiona's advice on changing how you talk to yourself. Changing the way you think about yourself changes how you feel about yourself. recognise your successes, when you do something well, write it down and then when you feel like an imposter, read it.  When a man is asked to do something in business, he'll normally say yes and do it. When a woman's asked to do something, she'll say, oh, well, I haven't done this, and I haven't done that. Women will start talking about all the things they can't do or that they haven't done before. They verbalise it to themselves, whereas the guys do it in their own heads. When you're in a leadership position, say yes and then find out how you're going to do it. Don't talk about everything you can't do. Talk about the things you can do. Something Fiona always says to leaders when succession planning is that they need to find out the people that want to be developed and grown. You pick the people that are putting their hands up. You cannot train in enthusiasm and motivation, You have to find those qualities in a person and develop the rest.    BEST MOMENTS   ‘It's lifelong learning, nothing stops, and age does not matter.' ‘Stop telling yourself you're an imposter. Stop it. Stop putting that label onto yourself.' ‘If you don't open your mouth in business and say what you've achieved, someone else is going to own it for themselves.' ‘Get me involved in something I want. How can I help? How can I do this? Say to your manager, in two years time, I would love to be in that position like you. How do I do it?' ‘If you use language in a certain way, you can influence behaviour.'   EPISODE RESOURCES    www.nlpbusinesscircle.com Fiona on LinkedIn   ABOUT THE GUEST    “I started my career in Air Traffic Control, moved into Hospitality and for many years worked  around Europe running clubs and bars. I then transitioned into Sales and had been working in Dubai as a Sales Manager for Xerox in the late 80's when I got my big NLP 'WOW' moment. This is when I knew that I had stumbled on something special. My introduction to NLP was the catalyst to major life changes. I moved back to the UK and immersed myself in learning as much as I could about the way the mind works. I qualified as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, Life Coach, Business Performance Coach, NLP Practitioner, NLP Master Practitioner, Licensed NLP Trainer and finally an NLP Business Coach Trainer. In 2001 I set up my own company focusing on helping others learn to use NLP techniques, to help them become better Business  Leaders and Coaches. I developed a range of NLP based  Corporate Communication, Presentation and Coaching courses. In 2005 I created my NLP Business Practitioner, NLP Business Master Practitioner and NLP Business Coach Programmes. I have been delivering these in the UK, UAE and India and since 2020, and I now deliver most of my training online. As we are living in a time of complete disruption, the need for business leaders to develop the mental agility that NLP skills provide, has never been greater. Having spent years refining the use of NLP for business and coaching it's now my passion to train as many people as I can to use theses amazing techniques to help others have more choices and lead the best life they can”   PODCAST DESCRIPTION   Power in Diversity Podcast is a space where professional women from diverse backgrounds, eager to grow as leaders, come to be inspired and gain wisdom from other leaders. Hoda and host Omo will be talking about how Hoda helps others back to the truth within themselves.    KEY TAKEAWAYS   Hoda's work involves healing past childhood, generational difficulties, challenges and traumas through hypnosis. This is to release the person from feeling like they are blocked from moving forward in their life and realising a dream.  True inner peace is unshakable, it cannot be robbed from you by outside factors such as money troubles, losing a job, losing a relationship, anything that can shake a person to their core. Today Dr Omo is so excited to share this platform with a close friend who has joined her on a journey to promote and spread the message of diversity and female leadership. Dr. Elizabeth is a family practitioner passionate about functional medicine and alternative approaches to improving people's health. Things are slightly different in this episode as Omo is in the interviewee seat rather than being the interviewer, and Dr Elizabeth will be asking the questions. KEY TAKEAWAYS Omo's early years in Nigeria instilled in her the belief that she could achieve anything she set her mind. When given the golden opportunity to come to the UK, she was determined not to misuse it. Omo worked tirelessly at school to achieve top grades, despite facing hurdles such as attending a convent school where few people shared her ethnicity or cultural background. As a result, Omo struggled to feel a sense of belonging and often felt lost.  When asking her career advisor at school about going into dentistry, Omo was told, “I don't think people like you do dentistry”. She knew girls in the school who were applying for medicine and hadn't done any science in their A levels, so how come they are given the opportunity to do medicine, but people like her aren't? Maybe she hadn't even seen any black woman as a dentist. For Omo, her journey in transformational coaching began with her passion for optimising patients' oral health. She couldn't understand why there was often resistance to change, even when patients expressed a desire to improve their oral health. This sparked her interest in understanding what motivates people, specifically in the context of organisational behaviour psychology.  Omo finds that many of our female leaders feel they have to become more masculine in the traits they display to be able to fall into that leadership position. If you display a masculine tendency in your leadership style, you are criticised as a woman. But if you decide to display the compassionate, warm, kind side, which lends itself to healthcare professionals, then you are then seen as a weak leader. A healthy mental state stems from knowing yourself, understanding your boundaries, identifying your non-negotiables, and finding happiness and acceptance within that framework. It is also important to have a support system of friends who genuinely know and accept you for who you are.   BEST MOMENTS ‘With traditional Nigerian parents, you can't go all the way to the UK to come out and do interior designing.' ‘That kind of put a fire in my belly. I don't know what you mean by people like me. I'm going to go for it' ‘I wanted to be able to learn how what I was doing at different seasons of my life allowed me to create the results and how can I replicate that in my team.' ‘I do think organisations need to do much better in creating an environment where they can thrive, where they are valued, respected, and we feel like a sense of belonging.' ‘You employ' people not just for the skillset. You employ them for their heart and attitude, and you can't train that.' ‘I want individuals from minority groups to know they're not alone in what they go through.'   ABOUT THE GUEST  As a healthcare practitioner, Dr Elizabeth specialises in family medicine and has recently begun working in functional medicine. Functional medicine involves understanding how the body's various organ systems function when in a healthy state and working towards restoring them to their optimal state of health. This approach takes a holistic view of disease treatment. Creatively Dr Elizabeth is interested in people's stories and does a lot of writing essays, poetry and just finds people's life stories interesting. Learn more about your ad choices.
