Hello to you listening in Cologne, Germany!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. My baby brother, Paul, is a well-married, well-established adult whom I love dearly. It seems like only yesterday the family of 9 was camping in New Hampshire. One morning the parents parked the family station wagon in a grocery store lot taking Paul with them seated in the grocery cart. Time passed. They returned with the groceries, stowed them in the station wagon, got back in and drove away leaving Paul in the shopping cart in the parking lot. Of course us kids thought this was hilarious and we waved goodbye out the windows.Time passed. Mom looked around asking: where's Paul? We could barely speak for laughing. One brave soul pointed back in the direction we came. Ever see a station wagon pull a 180 at high speed on a country road? There he was just where the parents left him, calmly looking around at whatever was there. Paul's sense of serenity has stayed with him over the decades. As has his story. Story Prompt: Once upon a time you were too young to remember; but, there are parents, siblings, maybe family friends who are all too eager to share a story or three about what happened to you when you were too young to remember. Reach out to them and discover it. What is that story? Who shared it with you? What did it feel like to hear it? Remember to “Write that story!” and say: “Thanks for the memories.” You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer,✓ Arrange your no-sales, Complimentary Coaching Consult,✓ Opt In to my NewsAudioLetter for bonus gift, valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane on LinkedIn and SUBSTACKStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. In this episode, we delve into the spunky, bright, and warm world of Conny Goelz Schmitt, a renowned collage artist and sculptor whose work is deeply influenced by her rich multicultural experiences. Conny's journey spans continents, from her upbringing in Germany to her time in Taiwan and eventual settling in the United States. She seamlessly integrates elements of her diverse cultural background through her art, drawing inspiration from German artistry's meticulous attention to detail, the vibrant retro aesthetics of 1980s Taiwan, and the boundless creativity of the American pioneering spirit. Her profound connection with vintage books lies at the core of Conny's artistic expression. She shares her evolution from 2D collages to intricate 3D sculptures, experimenting with various levels of complexity and materials such as wallpaper and enamel. Despite exploring different mediums, Conny's unwavering dedication to books as her primary medium remains unwavering. For her, books serve as a conduit for time travel, bridging the past with the future and igniting a continuous stream of creative ideas. During our conversation, Conny reflects on her recent residency in Pouch Cove, delving into the projects she worked on and the inspiration she drew from the serene coastal surroundings. We explore the underlying reasons behind her choice of books as a medium and her profound attachment to them, prompting her to question the essence of her creative journey and the inexhaustible wellspring of ideas that fuels her passion. Finally, we discuss Conny's unique perspective on cultural similarities from her immersive experiences in Germany, Taiwan, and the United States. Through her keen observations, she unveils unexpected connections that transcend geographical boundaries, highlighting the universal language of art that resonates across diverse cultures. Conny is a joy, and I hope you enjoy this conversation! Topics discussed: • Cultural Fusion in Art: • The Timeless Medium of Vintage Books • Exploring Creativity and Collaboration. About Conny: Conny Goelz Schmitt is a collage artist and sculptor who spent her youth in Germany, moved to Taiwan in her twenties, and relocated to the US in 1996. Having been immersed in three very different cultures, she is drawn to hard edge painting influenced by the German “attention to detail”, the retro color palette reminiscent of Taiwan in the 80s, and the very often experimental and creative pioneering spirit of Americans. Her medium of choice is almost without exception the vintage book. In Germany she studied Sinology and German Literature at Eberhard Karls University in Tuebingen. She was named Sculptor of the Year by Chief Curator of Boston University, Kate McNamara in CAA's 69th Members' Prize Show. In 2016, Paul C. Ha, Director of the List Visual Art Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, selected her work for the Best Multi Media Prize in CAA's National Prize Show. This episode features researchers from the the University of Cologne (Germany) from the Faculty of Human Sciences and Faculty of Medicine, Graduate School GROW – Gerontological Research on Well-being, and also the Faculty of Medicine and University Hospital, Department of Palliative Medicine. The researchers are Helena Kukla, Angélique Herrler, Dr Julia Strupp and Professor Raymomd Voltz. Awareness of one's impending death can lead to existential distress, thus impairing psychological comfort and general well-being. Psychosocial support as an emerging need can alleviate symptoms of distress and enhance well-being. Research on behavioral and mental confrontation with one's own end of life and its effects on measures of psychological comfort is limited. Evaluated approaches of confronting the own end of life can be grouped into psychosocial interventions, meaning-enhancing interventions, educational courses and experiential learning. The effects of evaluated approaches show a clear trend toward an increase in well-being and a decrease in anxiety and depression. Low-threshold opportunities that fulfil psychosocial needs beyond medical treatment and focus on confronting end of life should be implemented. The opportunity to confront the end of life and address existential questions should become an area of greater focus within patient-centered care. The variety of approaches of confronting the end of life and their effects need to be investigated, as do the underlying mechanisms of action. In light of the scarcity of actual evidence, the focus should be particularly on individual coping strategies.

This week we are joined by the creator and host of Saint Podcast, Eric Huang, to discuss Saint Ursula, a British princess who was killed by the Huns in Cologne Germany on October 21st 383 AD, and who miraculously managed to take 11,000 virgins and one pope down with her. We also learn how Ursula inspired a very early commune of liberated women and how a convent of Ursuline nuns suffered madness and demonic possession during a quarantine lockdown in a global pandemic (something we can all relate to). Eric shares how this wild tale inspired both a book by Aldus Huxley and a nearly pornographic 1971 film called The Devils by director Ken Russell. We also revisit the earlier October feast days of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, also known as the Little Flower, whose autobiography is much maligned by our co-host Sean Kelly. And finally, we offer our support for the proposed beatification of a modern young woman who was inspired by both St. Francis and St. Thérèse, Cristina Gaztelu Vargas. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - The archbishop of Vaduz, Liechtenstein, announced this week that his archdiocese won't take part in the Synod on Synodality, saying that it would run “the risk of becoming ideological.” Vaduz is one of the smallest archdioceses in the world, with fewer than 40,000 Catholics. The archbishop said his archdiocese is small enough that, quote, “All those who wish to do so can enter into dialogue with one another, listen to one another, and maintain personal communication about suggestions, wishes, and ideas in everyday Church life.” The Synod on Synodality is a two-year, worldwide consultative process that Pope Francis launched this month, and in which all dioceses in the world have been asked to participate. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/249340/catholic-leader-says-his-archdiocese-won-t-take-part-in-synodal-process-citing-ideological-risk Pope Francis has shared a letter written by a clerical sexual abuse survivor with candidates preparing for the Catholic priesthood. The anonymous abuse victim wrote that she was sharing her story because she would like to see “loving truth” win out. The letter reads, in part, “God has called you to be his instrument among men. You have a GREAT RESPONSIBILITY! A responsibility that is not a burden, but a GIFT! Please treat it according to the example of Jesus... with HUMILITY and LOVE!” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/249339/pope-francis-wants-seminarians-to-read-this-letter-from-a-clerical-abuse-survivor A Kansas City-area Baptist megachurch has reached a $150,000 settlement with the county over coronavirus restrictions. Abundant Life Baptist Church filed a lawsuit against Jackson County, Missouri over a year ago, arguing that the county's coronavirus restrictions treated places of worship more harshly than secular institutions such as retail stores. Since the lawsuit was filed, several Supreme Court decisions related to coronavirus restrictions on worship have been handed down that make it likely that the church would have won the case. Under the terms of the settlement, Jackson County vowed that in exchange for the church dropping the lawsuit, it would ensure that future enforcement measures would not impose stricter requirements on religious organizations than their secular counterparts. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/249350/missouri-christian-church-wins-settlement-over-coronavirus-restrictions-on-worship The Bishop of Buea, Cameroon, has condemned both the Thursday shooting death of a five-year-old girl at a police checkpoint in the city, and the lynching death of the officer responsible. The girl was shot to death when the driver of the car in which she was travelling to school refused to stop at a police checkpoint. A crowd soon gathered at the site, capturing the officer and beating him to death. The Cameroonian bishop urged prayers for the dead. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/249349/bishop-in-cameroon-shocked-by-shooting-death-of-young-girl-lynching-of-policeman Today, the Church honors Saint Ursula and the Virgins of Cologne, who fled England during the fourth century Saxon invasion and were martyred on the European continent. Saint Ursula is the patroness of Catholic education, especially the education of girls; Cologne Germany, educators, holy death, schoolchildren, students, and teachers. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-ursula-and-the-virgins-of-cologne-27
Ludwig van Beethoven, (baptized December 17, 1770, Bonn, archbishopric of Cologne [Germany]—died March 26, 1827, Vienna, Austria), German composer, the predominant musical figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras.Widely regarded as the greatest composer who ever lived, Ludwig van Beethoven dominates a period of musical history as no one else before or since. Rooted in the Classical traditions of Joseph Haydn and Mozart, his art reaches out to encompass the new spirit of humanism and incipient nationalism expressed in the works of Goethe and Friedrich von Schiller, his elder contemporaries in the world of literature; the stringently redefined moral imperatives of Kant; and the ideals of the French Revolution, with its passionate concern for the freedom and dignity of the individual. He revealed more vividly than any of his predecessors the power of music to convey a philosophy of life without the aid of a spoken text; and in certain of his compositions is to be found the strongest assertion of the human will in all music, if not in all art. Though not himself a Romantic, he became the fountainhead of much that characterized the work of the Romantics who followed him, especially in his ideal of program or illustrative music, which he defined in connection with his Sixth (Pastoral) Symphony as “more an expression of emotion than painting.” In musical form he was a considerable innovator, widening the scope of sonata, symphony, concerto, and quartet, while in the Ninth Symphony he combined the worlds of vocal and instrumental music in a manner never before attempted. His personal life was marked by a heroic struggle against encroaching deafness, and some of his most important works were composed during the last 10 years of his life when he was quite unable to hear. In an age that saw the decline of court and church patronage, he not only maintained himself from the sale and publication of his works but also was the first musician to receive a salary with no duties other than to compose how and when he felt inclined.

While talking outside of the Berlin Art Fair we had a chance to discuss: Idealism, the art scene in Cologne, Germany, how their gallery chooses artists, exclusivity for artists, the need for constructive feedback, how to write an artist cv and artist statement, abstract art, conceptual art, the subjectivity of art, online art sales, the ability to translate online and social media interest into sales or career advancing opportunities, being a closer, whether a gallery or artist should put prices online, VAT and taxes, the value vs price of artwork, instalment or payment plans to purchase art, and artist managers http://www.galeriealber.com About The GALERIE ALBER aims to join the Rhenish gallery tradition and to further develop it in the spirit of today's networking culture. The challenges of the digital age are deliberately reflected and differentiated in order to promote the reach of fresh artistic positions through the use of cooperative exchange. Traditional empirical values that have proven themselves in the direct confrontation with the work in space are always continued. The conveyance of the works of art is supported by a progressive curation concept, which is individually adapted. Marco Alber has fallen for art, his gallery is the long-term product of it. Starting with volunteer work at the Friends of the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum u. of the Museum Ludwig eV, there were first experiences in the course of participation in a gallery in Cologne's Agnesviertel, which was to significantly expand its network. In addition, various exhibitions, talks, curations and meditations were carried out up to the final wish to create a place of its own, which should grow from his personal wealth of experience.
