Danica Patrick Pretty Intense Podcast

Denny Hamlin enters his 17th full season driving the #11 FedEx Toyota in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2022 with Joe Gibbs Racing and fourth-year crew chief Chris Gabehart. Hamlin has won 46 races in 578 career starts at stock-car racing's highest level since bursting onto the scene with two victories and “Rookie of the Year” honors in 2006. The 41-year-old Chesterfield, Va., native has scored 198 top-five and 305 top-10 finishes and contended in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs in 15 of 16 years behind the wheel of the #11 car. The FedEx Racing driver enjoyed a record-setting year in 2021, earning a career-high 25 top-10 finishes and leading a career-best 1,502 laps. He also tied his career high for top-five finishes with 19. Hamlin completed all but four of the season's 9,200 laps on the way to his first full season with no DNFs (Did Not Finish). He notched two wins on the way to making his third straight trip to the Championship 4 race, where he finished third in the standings. Hamlin kicked off the 2020 season with a Daytona 500 win, becoming only the fifth driver in NASCAR history to claim three victories in the “Great American Race.” He went on to score a total of seven wins on the season, advancing to the Championship 4 for the second consecutive year. He finished the year ranked fourth in the standings, compiling 18 top-five and 21 top-10 finishes. And, in an unusual season featuring a 10-week shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hamlin also excelled in an iRacing season from his at-home racing simulator, scoring two televised wins against his Cup Series competitors at virtual racetracks. 2019 was a statement season for Hamlin and rookie crew chief Gabehart. After registering no wins in 2018, the veteran driver rebounded in forceful fashion to score six wins on the year, including his second Daytona 500 victory. Hamlin's successful 2019 season also included 19 top-five and 24 top-10 finishes – both career season-highs – and three Busch Pole Awards. He capped off the year with a Championship 4 berth in the season-finale race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, where he drove to a fourth-place finish in the point standings. Hamlin boasts an impressive 33 career poles, the second-highest record among active Cup Series drivers. Hamlin collected 10 top-five and 17 top-10 finishes during the 2018 season that earned him an 11th-place finish in the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series standings. He added four Coors Light Pole Awards to his résumé, including a first-place starting spot for the Series' finale race at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the second-consecutive year. Hamlin jumpstarted his 2017 campaign by collecting his third career Duel victory (2008, 2014) during Daytona “Speedweeks,” eventually scoring two more regular season wins after dominating performances at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway. He also added two Coors Light Pole Awards to his season accomplishments – one at Charlotte Motor Speedway during the Playoffs and one during the season-finale race weekend at Homestead-Miami. Overall, Hamlin tied career-bests with 15 top-five and 22 top-10 finishes en route to finishing sixth in the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series standings. His 2016 season began triumphantly when he claimed the prestigious Daytona 500 win – his first-ever Daytona victory – in a historic finish, edging out Martin Truex Jr. by .01 seconds. Hamlin went on to score two more wins.

When the dust settled on the 2022 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. got to fulfill a broadcasting bucket list item: declaring that the No. 43 was the winner. On this week's episode of The Dale Jr. Download, he and co-host Mike Davis sit down with the man who helped make it possible, the Petty GMS driver of the No. 43 NASCAR Cup Series car, Erik Jones. Erik's start in racing came when his mother read in a magazine about children competing in quarter midgets. Soon after, his father, Dave, bought a car, a book on set-ups, and the Jones family racing operation was off and running. At the age of 12, he graduated into the pure stock class and explains that after his first outing he was told by tech officials not to return due to his on-track aggression.  Erik got his first big break in his racing career when he got the call to shake down Kyle Busch's late model at the Nashville Fairgrounds. The connection came through spotter Brandon Lines, and even though he had limited seat time in a super late model, he was able to produce impressive lap times at the famed oval. When Erik scored his biggest victory to date later that year in the Snowball Derby, beating out Busch to do so, a lasting impression was made. Not long after that Busch and executives at Toyota Racing were lobbying on behalf of Erik, and the efforts led to an agreement with Joe Gibbs Racing. Once he was sitting in the Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 51 truck, Erik's meteoric rise through NASCAR's national series began. He notched his first Truck Series victory in just his fifth attempt and went on to win the series championship in his rookie season. He also made waves in the Xfinity racing pool, winning six times through 2015 and ‘16. Erik explains that since he was having on-track success, he didn't apply himself as much outside of the race car as he could have. When he arrived on the Cup scene in 2017, the unprecedented grind put a magnifying glass on his lack of preparation. Erik's transition into the premiere division of stock car racing was made difficult by another factor as well: the loss of his father in 2016. As the racing season began, his father was diagnosed with stage-four melanoma. Erik would fly to and from Michigan while competing full-time in the Xfinity Series to spend as much time with his father as he could. He and Dale relate to the process of having conversations with a parent in their final stage of life and having the opportunity to be completely honest and open with them. Erik explains that competing in the Cup Series was a shared dream for him and his father, and his perception changed in the wake of his passing.  The conversation also covers Erik's release from Joe Gibbs Racing following the 2020 season. Erik gives great insight into the vulnerability and embarrassment a driver experiences when being let go from a race team. He recalls the painful ordeal of having to tell his family and friends as well as having to finish out the season with a crew that he would be leaving at the end of the year.  Erik channeled positivity through the low point and eventually became excited at the prospect of a new start. That opportunity came in 2021 when he signed on with Petty GMS to take over the famed No. 43 ride. After the challenging process of having to start over, the team has turned around in the 2022 season with Erik scoring a major victory at the Southern 500 and being in contention for wins week in and week out.  Through it all, Erik has been resilient through the ebb and flow of the racing world and it appears that his brightest days still lie ahead.  DIRTY AIR Response to the Ben Kennedy episode Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson's dust-up at Vegas Kurt Busch retiring from full-time competition Cole Custer's future with SHR ASKJR presented by Xfinity Dale's updated final fours for Cup and Xfinity Innovation fishing tournaments Repaving of Rockingham  New iRacing Championship trophy To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. This week's episode gets off to a rousing start with discussion of Erik Jones' win in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, driving the number 43 Petty GMS Racing entry. In the third and final installment of our EPIC interview with Pete Wright, Pete talks about the friction that existed between Junior Johnson's teams, the controversial suspension of Junior and crew chief Tim Brewer going into the 1991 edition of The Winston all-star race and how he and teammate Mike Hill felt like they were left holding the bag a little bit.Pete also remembers leaving Junior Johnson & Associates to re-join Terry Labonte and Billy Hagan and the neat little trick that ALMOST got them a win at North Wilkesboro. Finally, Pete discusses his long association with MB2 Motorsports.Hosts Rick Houston and Steve Waid then dig into the October 7, 1993 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Rusty Wallace wins at North Wilkesboro, but doesn't gain much ground on runnerup Dale Earnhardt in the Winston Cup standings. Terry Labonte takes seventh in that event despite developing … wink, wink … engine problems.MORE rule changes designed to slow speeds at Charlotte and Atlanta were tested … and … of course … debated. Buddy Baker announced plans to retire as a driver, with additional features on John Andretti's transition from IndyCar to NASCAR, a book of poetry on the late Alan Kulwicki and the mentor of every NASCAR historian, Greg Fielden.NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand. Please consider supporting this show via: www.patreon.com/thescenevaultpodcastwww.paypal.me/thescenevaultpodcastwww.venmo.com/thescenevaultpodcast

Welcome to episode 35 of the Lovecars On The Grid podcast! Tiff Needell and Paul Woodman bring us another roundup of motorsport events from the past week! We kick off this week with a Max Verstappen masterclass in Zandvoort in the Netherlands. We were expecting a dull race, as there were very few places for overtakes, but we were shocked by the action we saw in the Formula 1 this weekend! We had another Ferrari blunder in Carlos Sainz first pit stop, which resulted in Sergio Perez running over one of the pit crew tyre guns in his Red Bull. In his second stop, Sainz was released unsafely, resulting in a time penalty for an unsafe release. We had both Tsunoda and Bottas cars break down. Tsunoda thought his tyres were not fitted correct, and after a 2nd pit stop, was told to stop his car by his pit crew. Valtteri Bottas was forced to stop his Alfa Romeo on the start/finish straight, resulting in a safety car, that forced Lewis Hamilton to lose his lead. George Russell took a late call with Mercedes to change his tyres during the safety car, but this left Hamilton exposed, allowing Max Verstappen to overtake on the first corner following the race restart. The final result was 1st to Max Verstappen, 2nd to Charles LeClerc and 3rd to George Russell, the British driver's best ever finish with Mercedes. We also finally have an update on the Oscar Piastri fiasco. The driver has now confirmed that he will be driving for McLaren next year. Meanwhile, AlphaTauri are working to secure Indycar driver, Colton Herta. Controversially, the driver hasn't received a super license, so the team are working to secure one for him in order for him to drive for them next year. Elsewhere in F1, there's confusion between the Red Bull and Porsche deal, with questions being asked about if it's an engine deal, a chassis deal, or whether anything will happen at all! In F2, we had another safety car issue. Liam Lawson was holding up the rest of the pack, waiting as late as possible before restarting. The drivers further back in the field tried to speed up early, resulting in several drivers crashing. The feature race ended up being won by Brazilian driver, Felipe Drugovich, with Marcus Armstrong winning the sprint race. In Formula 3, we had a session ended early, following a red flag on the banked corner that was arguably not needed. We're all for safety first, but this red flag was a bit extreme! The feature race was won by Zane Maloney, whilst Caio Collet won the sprint race. The Moto GP took place at Misano in Italy, won by Ducati rider, Francesco Bagnaia. Australian rider, Jack Miller crashed in his Ducati, showing just how on the edge these riders really ride! In the USA, we had Indycar at Portland. We had a fairly dull race, however we still had safety cars! Following some new ruling, the cars restarted further back on the straight, which resulted in no crashes when it came to the chicane as the cars were more spaced out. Scott McLaughlin dominated the race and took the win, with team mate Will Power in 2nd place. 3rd place Scott Dixon went from 16th to take his podium position. The NASCAR race was fairly chaotic, which took place at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. Chase Elliot ended up spinning out. Kyle Busch blew his engine, and Kevin Harwick's car burst into flames! The win went to Erik Jones in his Chevrolet, with Denny Hamlin behind him in 2nd place. Next week, we have Formula 1, F2, F3 and the Porsche Supercup at Monza. The World Endurance Championship is back in Fuji, with some reduction in weight on the Peugeot and Toyota cars. WRC is back in Greece for a tough rally. The final round of Indycar is next week too, at Laguna Seca. We also have NASCAR! At home, British GT is taking place at Brands Hatch, whilst the British Superbikes are at Snetterton.

In the mind of Harold Brasington, Darlington Raceway was nothing more than a sketch of what his track would look like for well over a decade before ground was finally broken to get the process started. When the gates finally opened for qualifying 10 days before the green flag waved over the inaugural Southern 500 on Sept. 4, 1950, the 1.25-mile superspeedway was all the rage among the people of Darlington County, S.C. It was the one entity that would put Darlington, S.C. and Florence, S.C. on the regional and national map. Eventually, over a period of 70 years, the track "Too Tough to Tame" helped to build the careers of many NASCAR legends. Thus far,  63 checkered flags have fallen over drivers in spring and fall events at the legendary and historic track. NASCAR historians Ben White and Jerry Bonkowski look back at how the track came into existence and revisit some of the greatest victories that occurred there. They also look back at the origins and interesting milestones of the No. 62 in NASCAR history during podcast No. 62 of "A Lifetime in NASCAR."  Give "A Lifetime in NASCAR" a listen for some interesting information on this week's podcast.

Brett Griffin, T.J. Majors and Freddie Kraft return from a rain-delayed Dover Motor Speedway weekend and recap all the action. Justin Allgaier's highly anticipated No. 7 DBC car finally hit the track with a strong performance and runner-up finish. The guys share their thoughts on DBC car content and their positions as sponsors and competitors of the JR Motorsports machine. They also discuss the struggle between race start times and TV ratings after the Dover Cup race rained out. To start Spot on, Spot Off, the gang discusses Allgaier's performance during Saturday's Xfinity Series race. Hear what was going through their heads and why Freddie might have caused them to lose the race at the end. Next, NASCAR decided to not give teams an extra set of tires during the Cup Series race after cars were experiencing an excessive amount of wear. Was that the right or wrong call? Who was responsible for the excessive wear? Is added tire strategy good for the sport? The guys debate. AJ Allmendinger's loose tire caused a caution during green-flag pit stops late in the race. The spotters discuss why this was the most harrowing Next Gen tire situation yet and why it took long for NASCAR to display the yellow flag. Then, they talk about the severity of the loose tire penalty and how it should be changed. Ross Chastain's late block on Martin Truex Jr. on the final lap of the race sparked more conversation about Chastain's aggressive moves. Hear what the guys believe Chastain was thinking when he made the block and what it says about Truex for lifting. After 11 races, the guys talk about the current playoff and points standings. They decide which drivers are in must-win situations and whether or not there will be 16 winners before the playoffs. Finally, they talk about this upcoming weekend's throwback race at Darlington Raceway and NASCAR's decision to keep the car numbers slid forward. On this edition of The Dale Jr. Download, Dale Jr., co-host Mike Davis and special guests take a look back at some of the best Earnhardt stories of all-time. We reach far into the way-back machine to a couch discussion with NASCAR Hall of Famer Terry Labonte. Labonte was on the receiving end of one of the more famous shots from the front bumper of The Intimidator's No, 3 car at Bristol Motor Speedway. Just how did "Texas Terry" balance the awkwardness of being hunting buddies and fierce competitors during the peak of both of their careers. Dale Jr. and great friend Hank Parker Jr. talk about the relationship their father's had and how it helped their's blossom. It leads the table to learn of one of the funniest Dale Earnhardt hunting stories of all time! Dale Earnhardt's long-time car owner and great friend Richard Childress shares intimate details of a hunting trip that resulted in near tragedy. How did a campfire promise made on the trip keep Richard Childress racing after the death of Dale Earnhardt in 2001? Last but not least, one of the most popular guests on The Download, the legendary Ken Schrader, shares the story of all stories. Dale Jr. calls it "The Trip," and boy was it a trip! When you mix a teenage Dale Jr. with dirt track veteran Ken Schrader, and add in nudie magazines, beer, hitchhiking and a strip club, you get quite the damn story. It's a trip that drew the ire of "Dad" Earnhardt. As for Schrader? He ultimately paid the price. OPEN SEGMENT Before reminiscing on Earnhardt stories, Mike and Dale discuss something that has been on their minds leading up to the up-coming NASCAR Throwback Weekend at Darlington Raceway. The two friends share their real feelings about what has become a cherished part of the NASCAR season, what it may look like, and how the entire industry should approach it. ASKJR presented by Xfinity Hannah Newhouse brings fan questions to the table of truth. Who on the Dirty Mo Media team have habits that annoy me. It gets super-honest and hilarious.
