Tonight on Trackside, we talk about Josef Newgarden and his stance in the racing world. Curt and Kevin talk about the star power of IndyCar drivers, and ratings for Qualifying and how good the streaming numbers were for Sunday. They talk about how easy it is to sit and watch qualifying now as opposed to how it used to be back in the 80s and 90s. Later in the the show, Kevin and Curt talk about NASCAR giving Kyle Larson a waiver if he cannot make it to the Coca-Cola 600. There is a rule that says that all drivers have to compete, but Larson may get a pass because of the 500 and because it would damage the look of the sport if they did not give him a waiver. They talk about Simon Pagenaud helping Scott McLaughlin, and how Dario Franchitti had to stop abruptly like Pagenaud too. Should Larson forgo his ride, would the league bend the rules and get Tony Kanaan behind the wheel? Is Nolan Siegel the only driver that could sub? Malukas said himself he wasn't physically able to. Kevin and Curt end the show talking to Kaylee Bryson about her racing career in USAC. She talks about her mentors, and her first USAC feature win. She talks about coming up the ranks, and where she wants to go with her racing career. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Tonight on Trackside, Kevin and Curt are back in their regular locations, and are previewing the festivities of the upcoming Indy 500. They talk about the latest on the Kyle Larson situation, and the weather for the 500. They talk about the ratings bump that Larson brought to qualifying, and if Tony Kanaan will run test laps on Thursday. They also discuss whether Larson will get a waiver if he misses the Coca Cola 600, and where NASCAR would draw the line. They also go into detail about what would happen if Larson couldn't race, and who would take his spot. Nolan Siegel is presented as an option for an alternate. Later in the the show, Kevin and Curt head to the X box to answer some listener questions, including questions about the pace car's look, and the possibility of a Honda Pace car. Kevin talks about whether they will refer to Will Power as the points leader during the 500, and why IMS chose Ken Griffey Jr. to drive the pace car. Kevin talks about how cool it is to have Griffey driving the pace car, and Dale Coyne's team expanding if possible. Kevin and Curt end the show going over what they missed about events going on during the weekend, including 500 picks. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Tonight on Trackside, it is a rainy day! Only about 23 minutes of practice at IMS took place, and Kevin and Curt break everything down. They talk about qualifying speeds, and if there will be a new track record this year. Curt believes you may see a 2-lap average record being broken, but probably not a new track record. They break down the weather for the rest of the week. They talk about the rivalry between Santino Ferucci and Romain Grosjean, and how that will play out the rest of the month of May. Later in the the show, Kevin and Curt head to the X Box to answer some listener questions. They talk about IndyCar's TV partner for next year, they also go through driver-by-driver and talk about how each of them did during the Sonsio Grand Prix. They also delve into Pato O'Ward's performance, and the woes he has had with his team, and Colton Herta's comments about Marcus Ericsson. Kevin and Curt round out the show talking about the schedule for tomorrow, what cars didn't turn laps, and the status of Tony Kanaan on turning laps at the track in case Kyle Larson cannot compete due to a rain delay. Kevin also talks about the hybrid start date. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

They also discuss Burger Bash, and how the Pacers being in the playoffs will affect the show. Later in the the show, Kevin and Curt talk about the Sonsio Grand Prix. They both talk about how they thought Alex Palou would dominate the race, which he did. They highlight how both Will Power and Christian Lundgaard thought Power had the better car, but Palou was just that impressive. They go into depth about Newgarden's image in racing, and how the team can fix it. Kevin and Curt round out the show talking about what they missed earlier in the show, including 100 Days to Indy, and the weather for tomorrow at the track, and previews Beyond the Bricks. Stand by race fans, the countdown to the 49th Annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach is almost over. In just a couple of days the city streets of Long Beach will be shut down to everyday traffic and the sounds of roaring engines will reverberate off of the buildings around the convention center, arena, Hyatt hotel and Aquarium of the Pacific. Headlining the event this year will once again be the NTT IndyCar Series with practice and qualifying on Friday and Saturday, while a Sunday morning warm-up and main-event race will be on Sunday. Once again IMSA will be the headline race on Saturday afternoon featuring the GTP cars and GTD (GT3) cars. No GTD Pro category this year which means that some of the pro teams will drop down to the Pro/Am category to have another shot at a win. Heading into Long Beach on a roll is last year's Indy 500 champion and 2022 AGPLB winner, Josef Newgarden, who won the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona this year in a Penske Porsche and the season's first Indy car race at St. Pete. Two-time NTT IndyCar Series Champion Alex Palou is also a winner this year at the non-points Million Dollar Challenge at Thermal Club last month by romping away from his competition. Former Long Beach winner and pole-sitter Colton Herta also won the 12 Hours of Sebring while his teammate and last year's winner here, Kyle Kirkwood, also won his class at Sebring. This long-standing event is rich in the team's data books so trying to carve out an advantage over the competition is always difficult. Expect to see some scraped up race cars and white-walled tires as every driver will be pushing to the extreme limits to try and find lap time in qualifying. New for this year's schedule will be the historic Indy cars. There are numerous entries spanning decades in the sport with incredibly interesting history and pedigree. Dennis Firestone (who was 1980 CART rookie of the year) will be racing the Dan Gurney AAR Eagle that he raced at the Indy 500 back in 1982. Tony Kanaan will be racing an Offy-powered McLaren and has promised to push hard to win! SRO GT America racing will take the place of the Porsche Carrera Cup this year with a wide variety of manufacturers in the field such as Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Calloway Corvette, Lamborghini, Mercedes, and Porsche. Robby Gordon's popular high-flying trucks return along drifting. This year's Saturday night concert has country music on tap featuring country stars Gretchen Wilson, Eddie Montgomery, and David Lee Murphy. Don't forget Thunder Thursday on Pine on April18th which is Free to the public where there'll be a pit stop competition and much more. For more information, please visit: www.gplb.com. Note: Jim Michaelian is the president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. During this year's press day, we had the opportunity to hear directly from him on what to expect this year and the challenges of putting on such an event now in its 49th year. Enjoy!
